About 2019 Nissan Murano

3.8

Overall Rating

First introduced way back in 2003, the Nissan Murano created a segment of sorts and paved way for Compact Utility Vehicles. Nissan publicized the Murano's its Car like driving attributes, despite it being an SUV and wanted to do away with the Truck like attribute, usually given to SUV's at the time.

First introduced way back in 2003, the Nissan Murano created a segment of sorts and paved the way for Compact Utility Vehicles. Nissan publicized the Murano with its hatchback-like driving attributes, despite it being an SUV. The 2019 Nissan Murano deploys the same 3.5L V6 engine that's paired to a CVT transmission. Prices start from $31,270 for the base FWD 'S' trim and go over $45,130 for the top-of-the-line AWD-equipped 'Platinum' trim. It competes with the likes of the Chevrolet Blazer, Honda Passport Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Ford Edge.

The SL trim adds a lot of value to the SV and convenience features, which is why we think it is the trim to go for.

2019 Nissan Murano Review

Pros

  • Powerful V6 Engine
  • Roomy Interiors
  • Good Fuel Efficiency

Cons

  • Dated Interior Layout
  • Low Cargo Storage Capacity
  • Only CVT Transmission

First introduced way back in 2003, the Nissan Murano created a segment of sorts and paved way for Compact Utility Vehicles. Nissan publicized the Murano's its Car like driving attributes, despite it being an SUV and wanted to do away with the Truck like attribute, usually given to SUV's at the time.

Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The Nissan Murano comes in four trims, and we can have all those trims in either FWD Configuration or an AWD. The base S trim is available at a price of $31,270 and gets decent standard features which include an 8' Touchscreen System, LED Headlights, and Taillights. The top of the line Platinum trim can go up to $45,130 for the AWD variant.

We Recommend

The SL trim adds a lot of value to the SV and convenience features, which is why we think it is the trim to go for. It is available at an MSRP of  around $40,000 and thus provides the best value for the money spent.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2019 Nissan Murano is equipped with a massive 3.5-liter engine that provides a maximum power output of 260 hp along with 240 lb.ft. of torque. The engine is mated with continuously variable transmission and delivers the power to the front wheels as standard. There is an option to opt for the AWD variant as well.

The CVT takes time to transfer power from standstill courtesy of the rubber band effect but gets the engine past its mid-range and that is when the Murano truly shines. Talking of the CVT, the Murano's CVT is the closest to any conventional manual transmission that we have seen in the segment and has a shift point throughout the rev range. The CVT also helps Nissan to rake in good mileage figures irrespective of the drivetrain you are in.

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer LT is the most powerful in this comparison with a power output of 305 hp, while it is followed by the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe with 290 hp. The Honda Passport generates 20 hp more than the Murano, while the Ford Edge is the least powerful at 245 hp.

Acceleration

The Murano imitates most other V6-powered rivals in the class, and it's no different. It's not the quickest but is punchy enough to unite into expressway traffic with ease. It is one of the slowest in acceleration with 0-60 mph reached in 7.5 seconds. Along with that, the quarter-mile distance is covered in 1.5.6 seconds.

The CVT's rubber band effect however is the major downer as it provides outright acceleration from a dead stop.

The 2019 Honda Passport is the quickest in acceleration with 0-60 mph reached in 6.1 seconds, while the Chevrolet Blazer follows it at 6.3 seconds. The Hyundai Santa Fe and the Ford Edge are almost as slow as the Nissan Murano.

Braking

The big and bulky brake rotors of the 2019 Nissan Murano, coupled with several braking aids and a sharp ABS allows the Nissan to rank as one of the best performing SUV in this comparison in terms of braking performance. The 119 ft stopping distance is a commendable feat considering the big and bulky size of the SUV and its power.

Speaking of competition, the Hyundai Santa Fe is the best of the lot with a 60-0 MPH braking distance of 116 feet, while the Ford Edge is at the bottom of the table at 129 feet. The Honda Passport comes in the middle of the table and below the Nissan in terms of braking performance.

Ride and Handling

The suspension tuning of the Nissan Murano is mostly towards the softer side and hence, the ride quality is one of the best in the segment in terms of the comfort offered to the passengers in the SUV. While this soft suspension makes the Murano thump over bumps and potholes, the body roll makes the SUV feel a lot less sporty than the rivals in the segment. It limits the road noise inside the cabin and thus the passengers won't feel disturbed by the noise from outside.

In terms of handling, Murano isn't as different from its rivals. The handling isn't exactly reassuring, but then, it's not unnerving either. The steering feels relatively lethargic in response, as there is not much connectivity between the driver input and what it translates on the road. The brake pedals aren't soft and offer a decent bite, but we would have appreciated a little more from those units.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

Nissan's engineers have ensured that the Murano offers a good mix of power and efficiency. The 2019 Nissan Murano clocks in at a super impressive overall combined mileage of 23 MPG and makes for a minimum driving range of 380 miles with its 19-gallon fuel tank.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2019 Nissan Murano seats 5 passengers rather comfortably because of its SUV-like dimensions. The seats are the best in class in terms of comfort and offer tireless rides while munching down miles down the freeway. The Cabin is well isolated from the outside and is the best in the segment in terms of isolation from the outside world.

In terms of Ingress/Egress, the Murano is the easiest one of the lot to get in and out of. The door opens to around 90 degrees, making for a wide opening for passengers to get in and the low height of the Murano adds to the ease. There is enough room inside the cabin, and that leaves no room for claustrophobic vibes to creep in the same.

Nissan Murano vs Santa Fe XL

Taking in view, the low starting MSRP of the 2019 Santa Fe XL and powerful 290hp, the Santa Fe XL address the needs of the power-hungry consumer. The Santa Fe also rewards the customer with plenty of features starting from the base trim. The Murano likewise has a superior infotainment framework and, despite the higher cost, gives better inside and outside highlights and a better Gas average as well.

Nissan Murano vs Ford Edge

The 2019 Ford Edge is one of the best handling SUVs that are available on the market today, specifically in the mid-size SUV segment. The Edge offers a higher cargo capacity and a better infotainment system. On the other hand, the Murano offers a plush and quiet ride and has fit and finish levels that seem taken from a segment above.

So if's sportiness is what you are after, the ford edge is the one to go for while if you are going for a comfortable and premium mile muncher, the Murano is the one

Nissan Murano vs Honda Passport

The 2019 Honda Passport is the newest entry in the segment and has started making waves already. The Passport offers enormous room on the inside and in the cargo area and is light on the pocket as well with a great MPG figure. Performance-wise as well, the Passport is way ahead of the Murano and a bit more fun to drive.

The Nissan on the other hand screams luxury from the inside and the way it drives. It isn't wobbly on the roads to drive and does everything that Honda does.

Final Verdict
8.4/10

With the 2019 Murano, Nissan has tried to give the customers a sense of both luxury, performance, and utility in one single package. With its updated exteriors, interior styling, and an ultra-plush and quiet ride, the Nissan Murano leaves nothing to be desired from an SUV meant for doing a lot of mile-munching. The addition of safety features makes the Murano is a lot safer to drive than before as well. Overall, if you aren't much concerned with Power and rely more on the luxury of the ride, a ride in the 2019 Nissan Murano is the one that you should be looking for.
