About 2019 Toyota Camry

3.8

Overall Rating

The crossover SUV segment might be hot right now, but there is still something to be said for the tried-and-trusted midsize sedan. The 2019 Camry as its previous iterations is easy to drive and offers a comfortable ride along with nimbler handling than competitors. Inside, you get high-quality materials, big and supportive seats, and a long list of driver assistance technologies.

The 2019 Camry, entering the second year of its eighth generation, feels tighter and sharper than its predecessor, and the steering is more precise. The new 8-speed automatic transmission is slick, and the standard 203 hp 2.5L four-pot that powers the majority of Camrys will suffice for most buyers. It has a satisfying blend of performance and efficiency while the optional V6 making over 300 horsepower can easily spin the front tires.

It has always been comfortable and inexpensive to drive and maintain, but it was never this exciting to drive. With the addition of the Hybrid version, coming in as part of the all-new 2018 Camry, it has also become the most efficient sedan in the midsize segment. And now, it is a lot more compatible connectivity-wise as well, for the 2019 Toyota Camry makes Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa standard fitment on all its levels.

Toyota has not made any drastic changes for 2019 as compared to the previous generation. Still, the company adds some desirable upgrades that increase its appeal. The most notable of these is the now-standard Apple CarPlay; Android Auto remains absent. For those who enjoy driving, we recommend them to consider V6 powered Camry trims i.e. XLE and XSE, but it's hard to justify the added cost, especially when the four-cylinder is more fuel-efficient.

For those looking best of both worlds, we recommend the SE trim which comes with a four-cylinder engine and standard features that include forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel along with paddle shifters.

2019 Toyota Camry Review

Pros

  • Commendable fuel economy from the four-pot oil burner
  • Comfortable and compliant ride
  • The spacious and feature-rich interior

Cons

  • Android Auto still isn’t available
  • No manual transmission option
  • No all-wheel drive, not even as an option
  • Lots of hard plastics used in the interior

The crossover SUV segment might be hot right now, but there is still something to be said for the tried-and-trusted midsize sedan. The 2019 Camry as its previous iterations is easy to drive and offers a comfortable ride along with nimbler handling than competitors. Inside, you get high-quality materials, big and supportive seats, and a long list of driver assistance technologies.

Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2019 Toyota Camry comes in five trims: L, LE, SE, XLE, and XSE. There's also a 2019 Camry Hybrid model, which we have covered in a separate review. The base trim, i.e. L, comes well-equipped with lots of driver assistance tech and a handful of useful infotainment features like Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa (Android Auto is still not available). However, the trunk space on offer in base trim has about 1 cubic foot less than other Camry trims.

If you want a punchier engine than the base four-cylinder engine, the Camry XLE or XSE trims' 301 hp six-cylinder engine would be your choice. The XLE and XSE trim also come with infotainment upgrades, a couple of extra safety features, and several comfort amenities. Toyota has not made any drastic changes for 2019 as this is just the second year of an all-new model introduced last year.

Engine and Performance
8.8/10

"The Camry is available with a choice between two engines, both powering the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission." -MotorTrend

The Toyota Camry offers a choice of three powertrains. Most popular among them is the standard 2.5L four-cylinder putting out a decent 203 horsepower (206 in XSE models) and giving up to 41 mpg. The most powerful is the 301 horsepower V6 but it returns poor gas mileage figures. All Camrys are front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive is sorely missed here.

Rev up the four-cylinder engine and it accelerates adequately reaching 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds. It loves to be revved, but it can sometimes feel lackluster at low rpm or around town. The more expensive V6 option is a luxury, not a necessity. The eight-speed automatic transmission, which is standard on all engine options, shifts smoothly and quickly. Press onto the gas pedal at a standstill and the Camry moves off with ease, making for a pleasant driving experience.

The Camry’s latest iteration continues to be a comfortable ride as was the case with its predecessors. It soaks up the pits and bumps on the roads without protest, thanks to the car’s stiff structure, soft spring rates, and 18” wheels wrapped in all-season rubbers with reasonably tall sidewalls. Combine that with front bucket seats and a three-across rear bench with soft cushioning, reasonable support, and Camry pampers its driver and passengers alike.

The Toyota Camry is the most powerful in this comparison. It is followed by the Honda Accord with a power output of 192 hp. That Honda has a comparatively smaller engine than the other rivals, yet it manages to generate more power output due to its turbocharged nature. Both the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima generate the same power output of 185 hp, while the Ford Fusion is at the bottom of this list with a power output of 173 hp.

"Toyota finally adds Apple CarPlay compatibility for its Entune system, and since the Camry's built-in navigation isn't anything to write home about, you'll want to use it." -CNet.Com

The cabin of the Toyota Camry has big, comfortable seats and gets good climate control, which translates to a pleasant riding experience for passengers. But the Camry's NVH; noise, vibration, and harshness; isn’t good, with a prominent engine buzz when accelerating, and noticeable wind and road noise it takes away the cocooned feeling. For the ride part, the Camry is buttoned-down for the most part. Typical pavement bumps, either large or small, are gobbled up nicely without filtering much into the cabin.

With two knobs for temperature and buttons for other controls, this midsize sedan has a simple and easy-to-use layout for its climate controls. The system cools down the cabin effectively, and HVAC fans operate very quietly making it even better. The back seats get two vents as part of an optional package. Camry L and LE trim come standard with a firm, supportive seat with fabric upholstery. SE trim gets synthetic leather seats with a distinct pattern, while XLE and XSE trim are upholstered in real leather.

The base trim has a 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, but all other trims have power adjustment. Controls on the steering wheel mean you’ll rarely have to use your hands to control the audio, and the big 7” and 8” touch-screen infotainment systems are bright and easy to operate. Base models get one USB port, while more expensive versions get three. Operating Camry’s infotainment system and the stereo is a breeze, thanks to easily accessible touch-screen controls. The audio system layout is simple and effective, with chunky, well-labeled buttons and a clear display even in direct sun.

However, built-in navigation is hard to get on the Camry. Bluetooth audio is straightforward, but Toyota's Entune system requires that the user pairs Bluetooth and connect a cord to use all its features. It feels clunky at first but reconnects quickly on subsequent visits. Apple CarPlay is standard this year, but Android Auto is not available. Voice commands work well if you go through the setup process that teaches the car your speech patterns. Or you can use Siri Eyes Free on your paired smartphone by pressing and holding the voice button. It's a good alternative, and we recommend you to use it while driving.

A list of the infotainment features on offer includes:

  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Voice control
  • Siri Eyes Free
  • USB port

"The 2019 Toyota Camry's bold look may not be for everyone, but we applaud Toyota for trying something new." -TheCarConnection.Com

Toyota continues to up its game with the Camry’s exterior style, and this newest model takes its design cues from current-gen Lexus models. From front to back, the 2019 Camry aims to show off its dynamic athleticism and attitude. Its large front grille is hard to miss, and the sleek low hood has lots of creases.

The 2019 Toyota Camry flaunts a taut body line, an athletic short-deck/long-hood profile stance, and a high beltline. Its sporty-looking exterior, especially in XSE trim that adds 19” wheels, unique exterior trim, and a tasteful rear spoiler, is a total eyecatcher. The sporty XSE trim boasts four chrome exhaust tips and one of the most distinguishing style elements is the 2-tone Midnight Black Metallic roof.

The overall height gives drivers a commanding view of the road, but the sedan’s low roof and wide stance combined with the steeply sloping windshield and rear window reduces rearward visibility. Each trim above base trim gets its distinctive style cues making it easily recognizable by the keen observers out there.

Other notable exterior features include:

  • Power Side Mirrors with Manual Folding
  • Trunk Rear Cargo Access
  • Fully Automatic Projector Beam LED Low/High Beam Daytime Running Lights
  • Auto High-Beam Headlamps with Delay-Off

2019 Toyota Camry vs 2019 Ford Fusion

The Toyota Camry is one of the most sought-after mid-size sedans in the segment due to its impeccable overall performance. So it takes the crown even against the 2019 Ford Fusion here. This Japanese piece of engineering is fitted with a superior powertrain along with nimble handling. No doubt, the 2019 Ford Fusion is amongst the greatest here, but in conformity to their base trims, the Camry pulls ahead with ease.

2019 Toyota Camry vs 2019 Kia Optima

Both vehicles are very well equipped at the entry level, especially when it comes to safety features. Neither one offers all-wheel-drive, but both have a hybrid option. The Kia Optima is good-looking, has tons of standard safety equipment, and both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come as standard. The Toyota Camry has great resale, reliability, and safety equipment. We recommend the 2019 Camry over the 2019 Optima because of its reliability and resale value.

2019 Toyota Camry vs 2019 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is one of the best midsize sedans on the road today, and it gives the Camry some serious competition. Like the Camry, the Accord has a range of available powertrains that are both fuel-efficient and powerful. The Accord may be a bit pricier in comparison, but it also has a more user-friendly and plush interior.
