About 2019 Toyota Corolla

3.7

Overall Rating

Currently in its twelfth generation, the 2019 Toyota Corolla remains unchanged this year and is available for sale at an MSRP of $19,655. It is powered by the same 1.8L 132 hp inline-4 engine that returns 32 MPG as per the EPA. The interior remains unchanged and Toyota now offers the Safety Sense suite as standard across the lineup. The 2019 Corolla is available for sale in 5 different trims, L, LE, SE, XSE, XLE alongside the 2019 Corolla hatchback.

The Toyota Corolla is one of the longest-running nameplates in history and the 2019 Toyota Corolla offers the same simplicity, reliability, and affordability. Toyota also offers a suite of standard safety tech this year and remains unchanged otherwise. Powered by a dreary 1.8L inline-4 that produces 136 hp mated to a clunky CVT or a 6-speed manual transmission, which gets an EPA-rated fuel efficiency of 32 MPG .

Available in both hatchback and sedan variants, the Corolla Sedan is available for sale in 5 different trim configurations alongside the LE Eco model that gets aerodynamic enhancements. The interior remains unchanged from last year with the base L trim offering limited features and only the higher XLE and XSE trim getting most creature comforts.

This dependable compact sedan nameplate is ranked 18 in our CarIndigo test, which faces against better-known rivals like the Honda Civic, Mazda 3, and Hyundai Elantra.

Also Read:

As long as you are not in the lookout for a lot of features, the base L trim should do the job well for you and which is why, it is the trim that we recommend.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2019 Toyota Corolla sedan is the Toyota's compact sedan which is placed above the subcompact Yaris and the more premium Camry and the Avalon. For Corolla, the brand is offering five main trims the L, LE, SE, XLE, and the XSE, with the price for the base L model starting at $19,655 and going up to $23,835 for the top XSE trim. The 1.8L engine is standard while the SE trim can be had with a manual for a $22,820 price tag.

Toyota offers quite a handsome list of features starting from the base L trim. As long as you are not on the lookout for a lot of features, the base L trim should do the job but for the once who need more opting for higher trims makes more sense. Toyota has been generous enough to offer some really premium features such as paddle-shifters and an 8-way power-adjustable driver seat in its top-end XSE trim.

The majority of the creature comforts and technology are only available in the top two trims. The SE trim gets an option for a sunroof, keyless entry & ignition, and the upgraded infotainment system with navigation. The higher XLE and XSE models can also be had with the same infotainment system which also offers the Entune App suite and smartphone integration.

Buying Advice

Since the lower trims do not get many features and higher trim gets expensive, the Corolla SE is the one to go for.

At an MSRP of $21,600, it gets a sporty ride, has an option for manual transmission, and gets upgraded leatherette upholstery with a leather steering wheel. Also, for an added price, one can get a sunroof, upgraded infotainment system with navigation, and keyless entry as well.

Engine and Performance
5.5/10

Even with a lower than average power output, the powertrain of the 2019 Toyota Corolla is capable of handling everyday runabout. The Corolla's 1.8 liters inline-4 produces 132 hp and 128 lb.-ft of torque, which lacks the much needed grunt. The power is routed to front wheels through a CVT which has improved a lot over previous generations and an optional 6-speed manual transmission for a more engaging drive.

The manual transmission is slightly quicker than the automatic and accounts for better driving dynamics. The aging four-cylinder engine of Toyota introduced in 2009, delivers sluggish acceleration. Being an entry-level sedan, it is not meant for performance and makes an unpleasant whine on higher RPMs. Also, the brake feel isn't impressive either and the Corolla needed 125 feet to stop from 60 MPH.

It takes a long 9.9 seconds to reach 60 mph from standstill and a painstaking 17.5 seconds to reach the quarter-mile mark. It has a top speed of 105 MPH which puts it behind most of its rivals. The manual transmission is quicker by around half a second but will be cumbersome to drive in city traffic.

The Mazda 3 is the quickest of the lot but is considerably more expensive while the Elantra is the most affordable one here and yet is quicker than Corolla.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

The little inline-4 motor under the hood of the 2019 Toyota Corolla manages to return a good fuel economy and stays lighter on the pocket. The standard Corolla gets 28 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highway, and 32 MPG combined. Buyers concerned with fuel economy should consider the LE Eco, its boosted horsepower (140), and aerodynamic exterior features to improve fuel efficiency versus other versions.

Even when it comes to range, the 2019 Corolla outperforms most its rivals. The Hyundai Elantra gets a marginally higher MPG rating and it employs a larger gas tank which aids it in offering the class-leading driving range. The Civic and Mazda 3 consume a lot more fuel and since Honda utilizes a smaller gas tank, it struggles in terms of range as well.

Interior
7.5/10

Inside, the 2019 Toyota Corolla is basic and straightforward, which is great in every case. Toyota's upstanding dashboard is not as off-putting, yet it makes for an uncommon driving position. The most recent model of the Corolla may set a benchmark but rather it has embraced an appealing structure highlighting quality plastics and soft-touch materials. The Base-model Corollas have a basic cabin layout with apt comfort or convenience features.

Regardless of the vehicle's low roofline, there is a lot of inside space, front, and back, and in addition loads of space for payload. The interior is available in 3 upholstery color options but most most of the creature comforts are available only on higher trims. The front seats are quite supportive yet comfortable over a long distance. The trunk has a fairly wide opening and a broad floor ahead of the rear wheel arches with a 13.0 cubic feet of cargo volume.

The 2019 Corolla offers a very spacious seating even for the rear seat passengers and is the best in the segment. The Civic is next in line while both the Mazda 3 and Elantra offer similar interior space. The Civic has the largest trunk and while both Corolla and Mazda 3 have least cargo volume to offer.

The Toyota Corolla offers a 6.1-inch touchscreen as standard with Bluetooth connectivity and voice command.

A standard 6.1-inch touchscreen for infotainment can be upgraded to a 7.0-inch unit on higher trims. The infotainment screen is surrounded by touch-sensitive buttons, and there are knobs for volume and tuning; additional infotainment controls are on the steering wheel. In the XSE, the integrated navigation worked well, and turn-by-turn directions also appeared in the gauge cluster.

Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior styling of the 2019 Toyota Corolla is meant to be assertive. The latest version of Toyota has adopted a much more handsome exterior shape, moving away from its bland, utilitarian roots. Its front end is expanding, with restless lines encompassing a wide dark swath under its grille. From the side and back, the Corolla is not as striking, however, that is likely something worth being thankful for.

With a glossy-black mesh grille that is meant to look sporty, the side and rear panels look conventional as in the previous variants. The LE is accompanied by 16-inch steel wheels, but the XLE bundle included aluminum rims. Higher trims gets 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels while Toyota offers the Corolla 2019 in 8 different colors.

The longer dimensions of the Corolla helps open up more interior space, while the 6.7-inch ground clearance aids in going over bumps and curbs. The Mazda 3 is similar in terms of dimensions and has a low sporty ride height. In terms of design, the Mazda and Elantra look the most appealing on the streets.
