About 2019 Toyota Sequoia

3.9

Overall Rating

The Sequoia comes fitted with a robust 5.7-liter V8 engine which is enough to serve all your needs. The powertrain is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission and rear wheel drive is standard.

Tall, muscular, powerful and a bit on the old-school side. Perhaps, you can't describe the 2019 Toyota Sequoia SUV in any better way. It's big, offers plenty of space and practicality to comfortably take you to Cape Verde. No fancy stuff and the Toyota Sequoia sticks to the basics like no other SUV does today. However, loyalists very well know that this large Toyota SUV has a resistance towards change since its second generation update back in 2008 and things are no different for 2019 as well.

The SR5 is the affordable base model, but when equipped with the available Premium Package, this SUV is a well-equipped eight-passenger family hauler. the Premium Package brings in sevral niceties like 8-passenger leather-trimmed seats, heated and powered front seats as well as power-reclining second-row seats.

2019 Toyota Sequoia Review

Pros

  • High on Practicality
  • Capable Off-Roader
  • Comfortable and disciplined owing to its size.

Cons

  • Dated interior layout
  • Gas-Guzzling Engine
  • Lethargic Infotainment System

The Sequoia comes fitted with a robust 5.7-liter V8 engine which is enough to serve all your needs. The powertrain is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission and rear wheel drive is standard.

Overview

Tall, muscular, powerful and a bit on the old-school side. Perhaps, you can't describe the 2019 Toyota Sequoia SUV in any better way. It's big, offers plenty of space and practicality to comfortably take you to Cape Verde. No fancy stuff and the Toyota Sequoia sticks to the basics like no other SUV does today. However, loyalists very well know that this large Toyota SUV has a resistance towards change since its second generation update back in 2008 and things are no different for 2019 as well.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Toyota Sequoia is offered in 4 trims, the base SR5, the TRD Sport, the Limited which blends luxury and functionality and the fully loaded Platinummodel. All of the variants are powered by a 5.7-liter V8 (381 horsepower, 401 pound-foot of torque) and a six-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is optional.

The 2019 Toyota Sequoia starts at $49,050 and prices increase over $64,000 for the Platinum trim.

We Recommend

The SR5 is the affordable base model, but when equipped with the available Premium Package, this SUV is a well-equipped eight-passenger family hauler. the Premium Package brings in sevral niceties like 8-passenger leather-trimmed seats, heated and powered front seats as well as power-reclining second-row seats.

Engine and Performance
7.7/10

The Toyota Sequoia is powered by a robust 3.5 liter V8 which generates 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. All that power is routed to the rear wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is optional. The V-8 feels powerful and there is plenty of torque which helps this bulky SUV to move quickly from a stop.

With such enormous power under your feet, you never really crave for more power throughout the ravv-range. Power comes in smooth and linear in the lower rpm band while you are rewarded with a sturdy torque-delivery in the mid-range for quick passings. Although the 6-speed automatic transmission is dated and needs an update, it is fairly quick and efficient in its duties.

Among the rivals here, things are as intensely contested as the segment itself. The Toyota Sequoia produces a similar amount of horsepower as the rivals but the six-speed transmission feels smooth. However, the transmission hardly helps the Sequoia in improving the fuel efficiency, especially when compared to 10-speed units found in Chevrolet Tahoe or the Ford Expedition.

Acceleration

While large full-blown SUVs are not ideally known to be quick sprinters unlike something like a BMW X5M, the Toyota Sequoia does bring a surprise in this regard. Floor it harder nad the behemoth 2019 Toyota sequoia charges from 0-60 MPH in just 7.1 seconds which is pretty decent for its size. The engine of Toyota Sequoia can never feel strained when passing slower traffic.

Throttle-response is very lively and power from the naturally-aspirated V8 comes in really quick. If Toyota updates the old transmission in the future models of the Sequoia, this beastly SUV can even post better figures on the acceleration table.

While the Toyoat Sequoia is certainly quick for its size and class but is not the quickest for sure. The Toyota Sequoia runs neck to neck with Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition in 0 to 60 runs while the Discovery stands last because of the lower displacement. However, among the rivals here, the Ford Expedition turns out to be the quickest with a 6.2-second run from 0-60.

Ride and Handling

The Toyota Sequoia can make mountains look like molehills with its rugged physique, robust chassis and its powerful V8 engine. It weighs nearly three tons and measures over 205 inches in length, despite its size the Sequoia is easy to maneuver and park. The cabin is well insulated and suppresses wind noise effectively.

The steering is vague and feels less connected to the tarmac. Although the handling is precise it feels a bit heavy at lower speeds where quick cornering will make the tires squeal. The overall ride is compliant though and the suspension absorbs smaller bumps quite well but there is plenty of clutter when driving over big potholes. It is composed on winding roads as well. The TRD models has a firmer ride with its stiffer suspension but that barely makes it any sportier.

The top-end Platinum models offer the best ride thanks to an air-suspension setup that can adapt instantly to road conditions. The 4-wheel-drive Sequoia models even have 2-speed transfer cases with low-range gearing, meaning it's more capable off-road than its competitors. This is no Jeep Wrangler or Land-Rover Defender for sure, but the Sequoia is a competent off-roader.

Braking

The Brake pedal feels in the Sequoia is soft and easy to modulate around town. The Sequoia's advanced Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) uses the brakes to help reduce wheel spin and enhance traction performance on unpredictable road surfaces like sand or mud.

The steering moves from side to side in an emergency braking situation and the average stopping distance is also good for this segment. Despite its 5730 lbs weight, a 2019 Toyota Sequoia stops from 60-0 MPh in 130 feet. Its fairly larger set of discs and 4-wheel ABS play a very significant part of its stopping prowess.

No surprise and however efficient the braking mechanism in a car be, the braking performance is always proportional to its overall proportions and weight. These are the exact attributes which take a toll on the Sequoia when compared to its rivals. The Toyota Sequoia has the worst braking distance because of its higher curb weight and stops at longish 130 feet.

Towing capacity

With a potent under its hood, a 2019 Toyota Sequoia can tow up to 7400 lbs which is less than most of the rivals. It is well suited for small trailers and boats. Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) is designed to apply brake pressure at individual wheels and manage engine torque to help the driver maintain control of the trailer.

Surprisingly, even with a contrasting power figure in the competition here, towing capacity of all the cars here is very very close. Interestingly, despite a lesser powerful engine than the Sequoia, the Land Rover Discovery has the same towing capacity as the mighty Toyota.

Among the segment though, the Ford Expedition shines again with its best in class towing capacity of 9300 lbs. Thanks to the generous 470 lb-ft of torque output from its peppy and refined 3.5-liter turbo V6 engine. Even the Ford's 10-speed automatic transmission is more refined and smooth in channelling power than its Toyota counterpart here.

Fuel Economy
6.1/10

The Toyota Sequoia can burn a hole in your pocket with monthly fuel bills as it is least efficient among rivals. With the fuel economy figures of 13 MPG city and 17 MPG on the highway, don't expect a greener environment. Most of the rivals are way more fuel efficient than the Sequoia.

You'll save more than $400 per year on gas driving the Tahoe compared to the Sequoia . With the 2WD model, the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe return 20 and 19 mpg combined economy respectively which is better than the Sequoia. Well, ruggedness comes at a heavy price though.

Interior
6.9/10

As said the Sequoia is the biggest SUV Toyota builds and it has the most spacious cabin in its class. The upright dashboard is truck-like and comes with massive dials and above them is a center screen for infotainment. The Sequoia can seat 8 people comfortably with a standard third row, and also offers variety of seating configurations to handle any combination of passengers and payload.

The front seats are wide and comfortable separated by a big old armrest.  While premium cloth upholstery comes as standard, the higher models also offer soft leather upholstery alongside heated front seats. The top "Limited" model also gets ventilated fornt and heated rear captain chairs. The 40/20/40-split second-row seat has plenty of room for adults, and its sides and reclines for different individuals. Alternatively, you can elect to have 2nd-row captain's chairs, which reduce total seat count to seven .

The extended rear door aids passenger entry in the third row which also reclines to offer a good amount of headroom and legroom. Sadly though, because of its tall height and uncomfortable seating position, the Sequoia offers the least headroom in the first and second row among its rivals. Even in terms of legroom, it's not the very best either. Furthermore, the wide A-pillars and large mirrors hamper the view through turns but side visibility is good for lane changes.

The infotainment screen in the 2019 Sequoia certainly looks dated now and has started to look dated. The screen is small comparred to its rivals and also misses out on Apple Carplay and Android Auto. However, you do get a 14-speaker JBL audio and a rear-seat entertainment package as optional.

With all the three-rows up, the 2019 Sequoia gets a 18.9 cu-fts of storage but when needed, folding down the second and third row in the Sequoia opens up a massive 120.1 cu-fts of cargo area.

The only contender in the competition here which aces past every other rival is the Land Rover Discovery with a mammoth 41.2 cu-fts of space, However, noteworthy is the fact that the Discovery gets this practicality in its tw-row configuration. Apart from its generous cargo bay, the Sqquoia also offers a power liftgate helps to load your belongings easily while the loading height is also relatoively lower for its size.

Exterior
7.5/10

With no changes on the outside, the 2019 Toyota Sequoia remains very familiar on the inside. You still get a tall and wide hood highlighted by a wide chrome-laden front grille flanked by LED headlamps and LED DRLs alongside deeply-sculpted air-scoops on the hood. No visual delight at the side and the large wheel-arches and those massive window-glasses speak for Sequoia's caricature. At the rear, the Sequoia stays as minimal as ever with its age-old tail lamps, chrome-badging and a roof-spoiler.

The Toyota Sequoia hasn’t been updated in recent years. The grille has been slightly reshaped in the year 2018 and it features different inserts depending on trim level. Based on the Tundra, the Sequoia has the largest dimensions and outdoes the $85,000 Landcruiser in terms of size. The short front and rear overhangs allow you to climb steep angles with ease and long wheelbase accounts for a spacious interior.

Among the competition here, the Sequoia is shorter in length only to the larger Ford-Expedition. However, the Sequoia's wide body and higher ground-clearance than the rest makes it look rather proportionate. Unlike the more sporty Land-Rover Discovery, the Sequoia proudly flashes its old-school yet very capable muscles on the outside. While the Chevrolet Tahoe also wears a sleeve similar to the Sequoia, the former looks more bolder and aggressive in its stance and also has a better road presence.

Exterior Features

  • LED low- and high-beam headlights with auto on/off feature
  • Lower bumper opening with dark-silver surround
  • Color-keyed heated power outside mirrors

Safety
9.9/10

While its overall packaging may be a bit old-school, the 2019 Toyota Sequoia ticks teh safety box very accurately. No surprise, being a Toyota, the Sequoia gets a host of advanced safety and driver-assistance features. Even on the base model of the 2019 Sequoia, you get features like forward-collision warning with auto-emergency braking, lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitor.

As standard, you also get front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, rear-cross traffic alert and traffic-adapting cruise control. While the 2019 Toyota Sequoia hasn't been crash-tested by federal agencies, considering its rich standard safety suite and Toyota's promising peace of mind, safety shouldn't be a concern for its prospective buyers. Safety Features:

  • Forward-collision warning
  • Auto-emergency braking

Competition
8.0/10

Ford Expedition

The Ford Expedition offers a far more efficient powertrain than the Sequoia. It is also available in an extended-wheelbase EL model. The Expedition also offers a smooth ride and higher towing capabilities. Even on the inside, the 2019 Ford Expedition offers more space and a more inviting layout. The Sequoia's main benefit lies in its lower price and Toyota's reputation for reliability.

Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevrolet Tahoe with its highly efficient V8 engine and high quality interior earns merit. It/s compromised third row and high load height are some of its negatives on the other hand. The Tahoe comes with more standard features including Apple Car Play, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hot spot which are missing in the Sequoia. The Chevrolet is also more modern and upscale and is a clear winner here.

Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery is undoubtedly the most capable off-roaders present in the market today. The Land Rover is spacious inside and tech features are user friendly. It you move around town for your work than Discovery is suited for you otherwise go with the Sequoia. However, the Sequoia has higher predicted reliability than the Discovery and also looks more muscular and rugged.

Final Verdict

While the overall presentation, styling and interior room may not be as impressive in the 2019 Toyota Sequoia but there's not everything wrong with this big SUV at all. For its class and size, the Sequoia offers good practicality with seating for up to eight passengers alongside tons of cargo space. It's also backed by a very strong and capable V8 block and is also surprisingly comfortable and obedient on the move. Above all, it has all the off-roading capabilities that you would really attribute to an ideal SUV in your mind. Overall, the Sequoia is a good strong “SUV” for ist class and price. However, if you need some style and enhanced features and willing to compromise on practicality, the Land Rover Discovery should get your job done pretty easily as well.
