About 2020 Audi e-tron electric

3.8

Overall Rating

The Audi E-Tron, by its design, falls somewhere between the Audi Q5 and the Audi Q7. One might not notice that it is Audi’s all-electric luxury SUV at first glance due to all the similarities it carries. The design language is very conservative on the outside but obsessively detailed on the inside.

It is a fact that crossovers are the cash cows of car companies. With manufacturers rolling out greener and more eco-friendly options, we are now witnessing an evolution in the segment with fully electric crossovers. Tesla was an early entrant in this market with its Model X, followed by Jaguar I-Pace. Seeing this, Audi launched its E-Tron for the US market in 2019. The 2020 Audi E-Tron is a carried forward model with absolutely no changes from the 2019 E-Tron model. Audi has kept the design similar to its other cars so that it resembles the Audi pedigree, whilst providing a very futureproof experience to the drivers.

The ride is quiet because of well-insulated interiors and also due to the absence of an internal combustion engine.

Seeing what the trims offer, we’d recommend spending some extra cash ($1,450 over the Premium Plus + Driver Assistance Package) and opting for the Prestige because it makes the Driver Assistance Package standard and offers many features on top of that. Throw in the tow package to utilize the 4000-pound maximum capacity that the E-Tron offers. If you are in the colder areas, the Cold Weather Package is a no-brainer! Since there are no changes to the 2020 model from the previous year, you can get a good deal while buying a used Audi E-Tron Electric SUV.

2020 Audi e-tron electric Review

Pros

  • Spacious and premium interior
  • Extraordinary driving dynamics
  • Tons of advanced safety features

Cons

  • Short driving range
  • Average touchscreen interface
  • Quite expensive compared to rivals

The Audi E-Tron, by its design, falls somewhere between the Audi Q5 and the Audi Q7. Engine and Performance
7.8/10

Beneath the heavily creased body of the E-Tron lies a 95.3-kWh lithium-ion battery that sends powers to two electric motors: one at the front axle and another at the second axle. These motors together provide the AWD capability to the E-Tron but this AWD is more biased towards the rear axle, which is a good thing.

These motors give out a power output of 355 horsepower and 414 lb-ft of torque. If you select the Sport mode, you can unlock 402 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque, albeit for a brief time. There’s no gearbox, which helps in the snappy acceleration.

The Tesla belts put the most power and torque, even in its less powerful iteration. AWD is the standard powertrain available on all cars. The rpm figures for power output are not available but we expect them to be on the lower rpm band. All that matters, the torque, is available from zero. Typical of EVs. All of them have a single-speed automatic, so no shifting gears.

2020 Audi E-Tron Acceleration

The E-Tron is a very swift car and with the electric power, you get all the torque at 0 rpm. The acceleration is very snappy, which is expected of electric vehicles. The throttle response isn’t as sharp as the other EVs in the market but it is good for accelerating when it’s on the move. But you see that as strong the acceleration is, the top end takes a hit. Typical of EVs.

Times? How about a 0-60 mph sprint in 5.5 seconds? And a quarter-mile of 13.9 seconds? It is quick, again. And the numbers justify the same. But the Tesla Model X obliterates the Audi with its 2.6 seconds, making it the quickest electric SUV in the segment. Let’s see for ourselves how the Audi stacks up to the Jaguar.

The Tesla Model X is in supercar acceleration territory boys! Following the Tesla is the Jaguar I-Pace with a 0-60 sprint of 4.5 seconds. The Audi trails behind with a 5.74 seconds sprint but looking at it simultaneously with the IC competitors of similar size, it is still stupidly quick. The quarter-mile times are also in the same order: Tesla, Jaguar, and Audi respectively. Both the Audi E-Tron and the Jaguar I-Pace have a top speed which is limited to 124 mph.

Ride and Handling

It is quick! The dual electric motor setup on the E-Tron makes it very quick off the line. As it is electric power, you get 100% of the torque from 0, unlike internal combustion engine cars. You can feel a sense of disconnection due to the 700-kilo battery pack. The E-Tron feels like a midsize SUV but weighs more than the larger ones. The wheels do pick up some imperfections on the road, but these are never too intrusive to be heard. In the dynamic mode, the ride becomes a little stiff and there’s an increase in the road noise. Despite being a big boy, the E-Tron handles all the twisty roads and corners well. The wide tires provide ample grip and confidence and the steering is responsive.

In the city, the instant torque on demand makes going about the roundabouts easier. What it also helps in is quick overtakes. Just press the accelerator and watch the E-Tron go – whoosh. It is seamless! Even on the rougher roads, the E-Tron is very composed and gives a planted ride regardless of the drive mode you are on. The efficiency mode adds some dead travel at the top but as soon as you flick it into sports, the accelerator is precise and the response is brilliant.

2020 Audi E-Tron Braking

The Audi E-Tron is a heavy car, and stopping it isn’t easy. Audi has integrated intelligent recuperation into the E-Tron for up to 30% of the range. The internally ventilated brakes come into play when the driver decelerates with more than 0.3g of force. The brake feels very solid, and they offer good bites and feedback without jolting.

The Jaguar I-Pace stops the best in the least distance. This is aided by the fact that it is the lightest car in the group weighing at under 5,000 pounds. The Audi E-Tron, weighing in close to 6,000 pounds, beats the lighter Tesla Model X in the braking department. Also, the E-Tron has big rotors that further assist in braking. The Tesla Model X takes the longest distance to stop.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

All the cars are purely run on electricity with the power sent to the wheels by a battery. One concern that EV owners have is what range they will get. This is also referred to as ‘Range Anxiety’ in electric vehicle owners but Audi seems to have addressed this issue on the E-Tron by providing a 95.3-kWh battery which has a claimed range of 204 miles.

The Tesla Model X provides the most MPGe and also has the highest range of all the EVs on the list. The Jaguar I-Pace follows suit with a range of 234 miles with the Audi E-Tron slotting in at the bottom of the list with a 204-mile range. The good news is that Audi is updating the E-Tron so that it can extract more juice out of the battery pack. We believe the figure is up to 16 miles more than the 2019 model year. Take note that the range of all the cars above are EPA estimates and the actual range might vary depending on driving conditions and driver’s style of driving.

The E-Tron is compatible with 150 kW DC fast chargers that charge it up to gain 50 miles in a 10-minute charge. This means that a charge of 30 minutes will let you drive the E-Tron for 160 miles more. A conventional and more commonly found 240-volt outlet will fully charge the E-Tron in roughly 9 hours.

The Tesla Model X, on the other hand, has an estimated driving range of 305 miles. If you want to charge your Model X, you can go to the nearest Tesla Superchargers which are located all across the States. The Superchargers will fully charge the Model X in 1.5 hours. A typical 240-volt outlet will charge the Model X in 10.5 hours.

The Jaguar I-Pace can be charged to 80% in 45 minutes with a rapid 100kW charger. A Rapid 50kW charger will take 1.5 hours. A slow 3kW charger takes 30 hours for a 100% charge! A domestic outlet gets you 30 miles worth of juice in 12 hours and will fully charge the I-Pace in 39 hours.

Interior
7.9/10

The interior of the E-Tron is classic Audi. It is minimalist, nicely laid out, and technologically advanced without being try-hard. The materials used on the dashboard and the doors are very soft touch and opulent. You can upgrade these materials to be of leather. Audi lets you customize the interior trims on the dash as well. You see some chrome treatment on the door panels and the window switches. But then the center console has hard plastic which makes the 2020 E-Tron feel not-so-luxurious.

There are five screens in total that you get: 2 for the center console, 2 for the rear-view cameras, and one for the lovely Audi Virtual Cockpit. All the seats are covered in leather. The front seats provide you with a lot of support in the corners with their cushioning. They also get heating and cooling functionality. They come with memory functions too to keep your preferred seating position every time someone messes with them. You can also opt-out of massaging seats for the front by spending some extra $. The rear seats are positioned a bit high and the floor is flat, making carrying 3 people in the back an easy task. There are loads of headroom in the rear, so much so that even 6-footers are comfortable.

Speaking of the cabin space and storage, there’s a lot. You get two cupholders in the center console which are good enough for two large cups of coffee. The area doesn’t have a cover and might feel a bit odd. There’s a wireless charger available with a 12V socket above it. You get all the connectivity features like USB points in the center console through which you can charge your phone in the storage of the center armrest.

The E-Tron has a massive boot. It has a scuff plate so that you don’t scratch the paintwork while loading or unloading. You get tethering points and hooks for added convenience. There’s a lot of underfloor storage as well. There’s a 60/40 split in the rear seats. You get a cubby near the driver’s right knee. The glove box can carry adequate amounts of stuff too. The door bins are huge and can fit a 2-liter bottle easily.

Infotainment System

The dual screens of E-Tron, just like all the latest Audi cars, have been housed smartly within the dashboard fascia, angled towards the driver. It makes use of Audi’s latest MMI Navigation Plus with MMI Touch hardware. This is a 10.1-inch touchscreen which is complemented by an 8.6-inch screen below. The software is very intuitive and easy to learn and there is a high level of graphical sophistication involved. These screens control all the features of the E-Tron and can prove to be tricky while on the go. There is haptic feedback that lets you know that you have touched something.

Then, there’s Audi’s Virtual Cockpit which is an impressive piece of hardware. As intuitive as the infotainment screens, the Virtual Cockpit shows a lot of information about the E-Tron’s vehicle status, navigation, trip information, etc. You get B&O’s premium sound system as standard to enhance the audio in the E-Tron. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available as standard. Some of the other features are:

  • Audi Connect with Online Services and Wireless Charging
  • Audi Pre Sense City and Rear
  • Front and Rear USB outlets
  • Heads Up Display with Integrated e-Toll collection system
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with Top View Camera
  • Charging Cables with Industrial Connector NEMA 14-50

Exterior
7.0/10

The Audi E-Tron sits on Volkswagen’s MLB Evo platform. The styling of the E-Tron is very balanced and cohesive. The overall styling isn’t daring, which is a good thing because the E-Tron blends in with the other Audi's well. The front fascia is dominated by a large hexagonal grille and a huge light strip in the end. You have charging ports on both sides of the E-Tron to make it easier for people.

With its exterior dimensions, the E-Tron looks like a low-slung Q7 or a taller A6 wagon. It depends on the way you see it. You get a distinct wheel design and a yellow badge along with the front fenders. The overall design is very mature, and there’s nothing too showy about the exterior as such.

The Audi E-Tron tips the scales as the heaviest contender here and has the shortest wheelbase. The Tesla Model X is the biggest SUV by dimension and also has the lowest ground clearance. The Jaguar I-Pace has the highest ground clearance of all.

Safety
6.0/10

As the 2020 Audi E-Tron is similar to the 2019 model year structurally, we expect to see the same performance by the 2020 E-Tron. The 2019 Audi E-Tron has been crash-tested by both the NHTSA and the IIHS and needless to say, it has come out with flying colors. It has earned a rating of 5 stars overall from the NHTSA. It has earned a ‘Good’ in every parameter of the IIHS test. To add more to these achievements, the IIHS has crowned the Audi E-Tron as the 2019 Top Safety Pick+ for the ‘LARGE SUV / 4-DOOR SUV’ segment.

Audi has equipped the E-Tron to the brim with driver assistance features. The Driver Assistance Package is a must if you are opting for the Premium Plus trim. The assistance package, which is standard with the Prestige, adds a lot to the table like:

  • Adaptive cruise control with turn and maneuver assist
  • Efficiency assistant which helps in governing the powertrain and chassis
  • Lane departure prevention
  • Intersection assistant
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Traffic jam assist

Competition

Audi E-Tron vs. Tesla Model X

The Model X rides well and has a bonkers performance (2.6 seconds 0-60!). The infotainment screen controls everything and is a very fluid system. The touch interface is very intuitive and feels like you are operating a smartphone. But, the Falcon doors at the rear are a gimmick and can be a pain to use in tight spaces.

The base price is expensive and the top end can cost well above $130,000. The Audi’s Virtual Cockpit and Infotainment screens look very well laid out but can be distracting while driving. And, it seems very affordable when compared to the Model X.

Audi E-Tron vs. Jaguar I-Pace

The Jaguar provides an excellent ride with a spacious and luxurious interior and good performance. But the design is very unconventional and a little weird. What pains the most is the slow charging times which might also hinder the buying decision of some people. The Audi E-Tron has very fast charging times and doesn’t look as unconventional as an I-Pace.

Final Verdict

The Audi E-Tron is the best all-around all-electric package that has the best comfort and luxury. The performance is good, and the battery pack provides a decent range. The interior looks nice and comes loaded to the brim with technology. The Virtual Cockpit adds a lot of utility to the tech inside. Although a heavy car, the Audi E-Tron drives well and has stupendous handling. The brakes work like a charm and halt the E-Tron good! Overall, if you are looking for a luxurious EV SUV to buy, the Audi E-Tron is for you!
