2020 Audi TT RS Review

Pros

  • Impeccable handling
  • Variety of packages to choose from
  • Impressive gas mileage
  • Futuristic instrument cluster

Cons

  • Cramped rear seats
  • Lacks advanced safety features
  • No dual zone automatic climate control

The New 2020 Audi TT RS Coupe is now priced at $67,500 with just $600 bump over the previous year's offering.

Overview

For an automotive giant like Audi, every refresh is as crucial as a new car launch. Speaking of refreshes, this Ingoldstadt based automotive giant has launched the 2020 Audi TT RS Coupe, a high performance-focused sports coupe car. The TT RS is the most hardcore and sportiest coupe of the entire TT range and has gathered a loyal fan following throughout its years of existence.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2020 Audi TT RS Coupe, comes in just one trim- TT RS. However, Audi offers a number of packages to customize your RS. In terms of standard features, your car is equipped with future proof features that include a futuristic digital instrument cluster, Premium audio, MMI touch, Audi phonebox, driver assistance systems and a lot more.

Which trim to go for?

The standalone TT RS comes with adequate essential features as standard that will satisfy most buyers' cravings. However, opting for the Technology package adds navigation, connectivity, safety and infotainment upgrades to the TT RS, which we strongly recommend. It may set you back by $3250 but you get Bang and Olufsen sound system and Audi side assist added to your build, making it a better daily driver. If you can squeeze in some more cash, then opt for the Audi Sport Carbon Fiber inlays, Design Selection Interior Red accents to match your Red Brake calipers. Don't forget to add the no-cost Adaptive Rear spoilers too. Your ideal build should cost you around 74grand which is justified for you get to take home a cultured classic with RS DNA.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The RS series of cars from Audi has always been different from their other siblings and such is the case, with the TT RS coupe as well. Unlike the Turbocharged 4 Pot motor in the standard TT and the TTS, you get a 2.5L 5 Pot Turbocharged motor as standard in the TT RS. What changes does it make? Well, you get a bump, a massive bump in power and torque figures. This motor feels a lot eager to rev up to its redline and doesn’t feel strained when it is put under pressure.

While the 7 Speed Dual Clutch Transmission remains the same as the other TT models, Audi engineers have tuned this unit specifically to match it to the upgraded engine. The Gear Shifts continue to remain slick and precise and you won’t find a lot of room for any complaints against this unit. This gearbox transfers power to all 4 wheels of the Audi via Audi’s superb Quattro AWD system and you won’t have many reasons to complain about the handling front as well.

Comparing the Audi with its adversaries, you will find that the TT RS doesn’t fare badly against them in terms of performance stats. In fact, it’s the 2nd most powerful Coupe in this comparison, after the BMW M2 Competition. Despite having a smaller engine than the M2, it churns out impressive power thanks to its legendary inline 5 engine that powered the Audi Quattro race cars to championship titles. Moreover, the engine has a distinctive firing order 1-2-4-5-3 that produces a unique exhaust note putting songbirds like wren to shame. Among the competition, TT RS is the only vehicle to sport a Quattro AWD system that can redirect 100% power to its rear wheels. This peculiar feature gives it an advantage over its rivals in the initial launch which only sport an RWD drivetrain.

How fast is the Audi TT RS?

With a healthy 5 Pot Motor under the hood of the 2020 Audi TT RS, one would expect great acceleration figures from the same. The TT RS takes no time to gather pace and doesn’t lose out on breath at any moment. You have enough power and torque on hand at all instances and overtaking other vehicles is a piece of cake, for this sporty coupe. This is due to Audi’s well-tuned Quattro AWD system and the compact weight proportions that makes it a bit easier in propelling the Coupe ahead.

Comparing the Audi’s rivals side by side and you will find that the comparatively underpowered Supra, betters most it’s adversaries other than the Audi in the 0-60 and the quarter-mile run, owing to its superb weight distribution and decent levels of torque on offer. The BMW and the Porsche are nearly at par with each other and both lag behind the other 2 coupes, discussed previously.

Is it exhilarating to drive?

Audi’s ‘RS’ lineup of cars has been famed for their handling and driving dynamics and the 2020 TT RS, maintains that legacy. The TT RS Coupe feels sporty at large when compared against the standard TT. However, the ride is stiffer than the other TT cars in the lineup and comes in handy, while taking the corners hard. There is minimal body roll at all times and you won’t get a feeling of the Coupe toppling down or rolling over at high speeds.

The Quattro AWD system allows for no loss of traction when the surface gets wet or snowy. The Steering feels direct and precise and points exactly, where you want the TT RS to go. Out on the highway, the RS remains planted to the tarmac and the superb weight distribution and the magnetic ride control allow for superior high-speed stability.

How well do the Brakes perform?

For a Coupe with the performance of the TT RS, you’d expect Audi to spec it with similarly potent brakes. Happily, this is the case with the 2020 TT RS. With big 14.6-inch discs on the front and 12.2 on the rear, the 2020 Audi TT RS’ braking performance is at par, with the best in the segment. With just 3296 lbs behind its back and a superb Quattro AWD setup, the braking performance of the 2020 Audi TT RS Coupe, is no short of breathtaking.

The Brakes feel sure-footed and inspire a lot of confidence in all instances. Nosedive is well contained and the coupe maintains a linear path under heavy braking. The rotors take little time to cool down and don’t lose out on feedback, even under heavy braking situations.

On the braking front, Audi has done well to keep the immense horsepower from causing havoc under heavy braking conditions. The newly launched Toyota Supra manages to beat most of the cars in this comparison, owing to its well-optimized brakes and lightweight body. The Porsche comes out on top, owing to its impeccable handling manners and top-notch brakes. The Bimmer manages to maintain its repute as well, owing to its well-optimized brakes and good dynamics.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The Audi TT RS may be one of the most powerful coupes on the block. However, with an impressive 23 MPG of mileage overall and a 14.5-gallon tank, the 2020 Audi TT RS Coupe, can do a minimum of 290 miles on a full tank and 406 miles at best. This is impressive, considering that the Audi has a standard AWD setup while the others come with an RWD setup.

When you take the MPG of all the coupes into account, you will be impressed by the fact that the Audi returns a decent mileage when you take into account the performance on offer. The GR Supra bells out the most mileage of all the coupes here and despite the small fuel tank manages to deliver a good range overall. The Porsche Cayman isn't the most fuel-efficient of the lot but owing to its massive fuel tank, the Cayman can go a long way.

Interior
8.0/10

The Audi TT RS coupe has comfortable and supportive seats but nowhere near the level that the coupes like the 718 and BMW have reached. The cabin feels spacious enough until the moment you try to pack in some luggage. With premium materials on most of the console, you can ignore the plastic bits that spoils a bit of the fun.

As with all German cars, the build quality is impeccable and you will find it hard, to spot any major panel gaps or inconsistencies. The overall design of the dash is focused on the driver. The buttons for the various controls are easily accessible and are easy to operate as well. Finishing off the Seats deserves a mention as the stitching is hard to find faults with and adds to the overall premium feel of the Cabin.

Comparing the Audi with its rivals and you will find that the German counterparts of the Audi, have a lot to offer, as far as Interior Space goes. The BMW, like the Audi, is the only other coupe here that can accommodate 4 passengers and we must say, the occupants of the Bimmer, will have a lot less to complain in terms of the space on offer. The Supra offers a spacious cabin than the Audi but sadly, can seat only 2 people in it.

What to expect on the inside?

Audi ensures that all of its cars come loaded with the best it has to offer in terms of the features and the 2020 Audi T RS, boasts of a pretty loaded list as well. Talking of the interior features on offer, here goes the highlights of the same:

  • Nappa leather seats with front S sport seats
  • Heated, 12-Way power front seats with 4-way lumbar adjustments and pneumatic side bolsters
  • Automatic climate control
  • Tilt and telescopic adjust 3 Spoke flat-bottom steering with shift paddles, satellite buttons
  • One-Touch up/down power windows with pinch protection
  • Ambient LED Interior lighting
  • Auto-dimming interior RVM with digital compass
  • Stainless steel pedal caps
  • Aluminum door sill inlays with RS badging

What does the Infotainment system feel like?

Audi has been constantly updating it’s MMI Infotainment system every year and for 2020, Audi has made improvements to the same as well. The TT RS’ infotainment system gets a bit more intuitive than last year and feels a tad more responsive than the same. You can also get the MMI Plus system with Android Auto, Apple Car Play by upgrading to the Technology package. The Highlights include

  • MMI touch with Handwriting-recognition technology
  • Audi Virtual Cockpit
  • Audi Sound System with 9 Speakers and Single CD Player with MP3 playback capability and dual SD card slots
  • SiriusXM/HD Radio
  • Bluetooth Telephony and Audio
  • Homelink powered Garage door opener
  • Rearview Camera

Is the Cargo space practical?

While Cargo Capacity may not be the primary reason why a Customer would want to buy a TT RS, the 12.0 cu.ft. Of Cargo space on offer is a decent amount of space. You can easily pack in a Suitcase and 2 Handbags for a short weekend getaway or groceries from the Supermarket. We would have loved some more cubby holes or storage spaces inside the Cabin of the TT RS as they fall short of what the rivals offer.

12.0 cu.ft.

10.2 cu.ft.

The Porsche Cayman S offers the most the Cargo Capacity among all the Coupes mentioned here courtesy of it’s front and rear trunk. The Bimmer comes in second in this respect and is followed by the Audi and the Toyota.

Exterior
9.0/10

Modern-day Audi’s are known to be sleek and sharp in terms of their design and the 2020 Audi TT RS Coupe is no exception either. With sharp LED Headlights at the front with seamlessly blended LED DRL’s, the TT RS looks menacing and sharp from the front. There are sharp lines and creases, all throughout the TT RS’ body and you will find it menacing, irrespective of the angle you look at it. The RS is just 165-inches long, much shorter than even the Porsche 718. However, it sits taller than the Porsche and loses out on the advantage of having a low center of gravity.

The compact proportions of the Audi make for a sporty ride irrespective of where you take it. It also allows for ease of parking in crowded parking spaces and maneuvering through tight spaces in the city as well. The flip side is the fact that the Audi isn’t the most spacious on the inside and feels kinda compact.

In terms of dimensions, the M2 Competition feels like the Monster in the room, courtesy of its massive size when compared to the others here. The Supra and the Porsche are tied at the second spot as far as dimensions go and are less cumbersome to live within the City. The Audi TT RS, is by far, the most compact coupe in this comparison and thus, the easiest one to live within the city.

Audi TT RS Coupe vs. Porsche 718 Cayman

Porsche makes one of the best handling cars in the world and the baby Porsche is no exception either. With a laser-sharp steering, great suspension damping and a superb ride setup, the Audi can’t simply match the handling of the same, despite coming close. The infotainment on the TT RS is, however, a different story. With the Virtual cockpit, it is far superior to the Porsche's infotainment. Although the TT RS's rear seats are quite unusable for seating, they make it easy to carry some luggage, which isn't possible in the 2-seater 718.

Audi TT RS Coupe vs. Toyota GR Supra

The Toyota GR Supra was revealed with much fanfare last year and hits our shores this year. The Supra combines the Handling precision of BMW with Toyota’s impermeable build. In terms of performance and handling, the Supra is no slouch wither and will impress most people out there. However, the Audi feels a step better in terms of handling and performance and courtesy of its 4 seater configuration, which is the practical one of the duo as well.

Audi TT RS Coupe vs. BMW M2 Competition

The BMW M2 Competition, in all ways, is one of the biggest rivals to the TT RS coupe. The M2 Competition, offers the tail sliding fun that we associate RWD cars with and comes with a Surgeon’s Knife like Handling and precision. The M2 can seat 4 people as well and is cheaper than the Audi by quite some margin. The Audi comes with a better infotainment system and has AWD as standard, making it the coupe more suited for Wet/Snowy surfaces. Hence, if you are a person, who resides in an area dominated by wet and snowy conditions, the Audi TT RS Coupe will be your best bet. But otherwise, it’s the BMW that’s the best overall.

Final Verdict
9.0/10

With the 2020 Audi TT RS, Audi has pulled out all stops in presenting a Coupe that can satisfy the needs of the performance hungry driving enthusiast. With a Punchy Motor underneath, standard AWD system and superb brakes, there isn’t much to complain about the handling and driving dynamics of the Audi. Add to that, sporty seats, an intuitive infotainment system and seating for 4 and you have on your hands, a sporty little coupe that can make your daily commutes fun while allowing you to post blisteringly quick lap times, on a race track near you.
