About 2020 BMW M240i

3.6

Overall Rating

The BMW M240i carries a compact structure, that lets you punch those corners with full force, as well as park this baby shark in tight parking spots.

Just as what AMG is to Mercedes and RS is to Audi, admit it, you wouldn't have really admired BMW if not for the endeavors achieved by its M-division. The Bavarian manufacturer wasn't really the paragon of luxury when it first came out. Every bit of its admiration and the chores sung among the fanboys were mostly the result of what its M-christened vehicles achieved. The youngest of these M vehicles - the BMW M240i, is a perfect example of how lethal can a wolf in sheep's clothing be. Now in its 2020 iteration, the M240i looks just like an ordinary 2 Series with a few bits and pieces screaming sportiness here and there.

The 2020 avatar of the M240i might not really intrigue you as there are minuscule changes over the previous model. Get inside the car though, and the story changes. The M240i, being the titan of the 2 Series lineup, already comes packed with a plethora of bells and whistles that set it head-to-head with the segment, if not ahead. The price-tag might not be the highlight in the M240i's portfolio, but if you want a compact coupe with stupendous handling dynamics, there's nothing better than this mini-M2 to rip off the tarmac!

The Bavarian, in this case, does not give the option of being choosy to its buyers. The M240i is the company’s sole offering here. However, this offering compiles some of the best features in its standard equipment list. Though you get an option to choose between an RWD and an AWD setup, we’d recommend you go for the former, since it provides you with a more engaging drive. The added benefit of low maintenance costs and better fuel economy further improve the RWD version's scorecard.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The BMW M240i may be perceived as a toothless tiger, eyeing its compact size and humble body design, but this is where such perceptions can prove fatal. Behind those legendary Bimmer kidney grilles, rests a fire-spitting 3.0L, turbocharged, 6-cylinder engine, which is potent enough to churn out a buzzard 335 hp, along with 369 lb.-ft. of torque.

The 8-speed automatic transmission acts as a perfect acquaintance to this powerhouse, providing effortless, and braced downshifts. The M240i feels refined throughout the rev-range and sounds simple hypnotic at the top of it. The optional Manual transmission on offer earns the final brownie points to give the purists a chance to challenge the slick-shifting automatics.

The M240i is an ideal city car that can cruise-easy around the town with supreme ease. However, when the aficionado within you demands a feast, the M240i’s 3.0L cannon is always on call. The engine responds rapidly to the slightest of the throttle tap, with a minimal hint of turbo lag. In fact, the M240i is so prone to losing its rear end on flat-footing the accelerator, that every time you hit a twist, we bet you cannot resist going sideways.

The BMW 240i is the heavyweight champion of this league here. The ride generates a whopping 335 hp, along with 369 ft.-lbs. of torque, leading the segment by a big-big margin. The M240i also hosts the biggest engine in here with a 3.0L, 6-cylinder motor, while all the other contenders get a 2.0L 4-pot motor. Also, the Jaguar XE remains the least powerful here, and add that to its heft, you've got a slow-legger in your hands.

How fast is the BMW M240i?

The BMW 240i is one hell of a rager and loves to flash its taillights to all its competitors. The turbocharged 3.0L, i6 gives a taste of dust to all other rides of this segment. Be it highway cruising, or going through the town, the eight-speed automatic transmission does a tremendous job in inflicting the M240i with eye-popping acceleration capabilities.

The BMW M240i zips from 0-60 MPH in just 4.4 seconds while covering the quarter-mile distance in just 12.7 seconds. In case you're still not taking it to be a fast Bavarian, let us tell you, this Bimmer is just half a second slower than the legendary Toyota GR Supra! Yes, it's that fast!

The BMW M240i is the fastest car in the segment, with the 3.0L i6 catapulting the ride from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. Mercedes CLA250 4-Matic ranks second last, taking 6.2 seconds to attain the speed of 60 mph, closely behind the Audi A5. The Jaguar XE makes a gasping chase with 6.3 seconds under its belt.

What about the braking performance of the BMW M240i?

The M240i exhibits its unmatched aura in the braking performance too. The M240i incorporates an M-tuned braking setup that takes a splendidly quick 103ft. to grind to a halt from 60 mph. Its brake feel is poise and remains steady. The ride remains composed and collected under hard braking situations as well, and there is not the slightest hint of any nosedive.

The standard 18-inch wheels do a fine job in planting firm feet on stomping the brake pedal. However, when tested, we found a minor issue with the M240i's brakes. If you're up for the track sessions, we recommend you get the brake rotors upgraded as these tend to overheat quickly. Infact, you can feel the braking efficiency deteriorating over prolonged use. Other than this hiccup, we found the M240i's brake setup to be one of the best in the segment.

The BMW M240i boasts the biggest brake rotors in this segment. Adorned with M-tuned 13.4-inch rotors at the front, and 13.6-inch towards the rear, the M240i pulls off a far better halting performance than all its rivals. That said, we were really impressed with the Mercedes-Benz CLA's braking performance as well, considering its slightly bigger size and weight.

What about the M240i's driving dynamics?

The BMW M240i handles itself with utmost grace. Throw the ride in a cornering spree, or some uneven pavement chase, the M240i, defying all odds, comes out unrivaled out of every situation. The biggest factors behind this feat of this ride are compact size, ultra-responsive steering, and proficient chassis setup.

The M240i does not let the irregularities get in its way of delivering a breathtaking performance since the firmly controlled suspension swallows most of the bumps out there. The Bimmer nails it around the corners as well, providing the driver a fun experience, spinning the ride around some sharp bends. M240i’s steering is one of the greatest places to get your hands-on. Steering effort feels light at low speeds and weights up relevantly when pinning that pedal. The feedback is lacking a bit, but it feels right most of the time.

The M240i offers three driving modes, namely: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. The Comfort mode accounts for a well-mannered, laid back driving with softer suspension settings and dialed-back throttle response. While on the other hand, Sport and Sport+ modes take care of your simulation needs with stiff suspension settings and stability controls.

Fuel Economy
5.2/10

Contemplating its performance, the BMW M240i may be considered a fuel-guzzler, but that’s just not the case here. Despite fabricating such humongous power, the M240i maintains a friendly relation with your monthly fuel budget. The M240i gives fuel-economy figures of 21 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, accounting for a combined MPG stat of 24.

The M240i posts some impressive MPG figures yet stands last when placed against the competitors. Though, the rivals are not that distant ahead with most of them giving out 2-3 miles extra on each gallon. However, considering the fact that the BMW M240i's got the biggest and the most powerful motor under the hood than that of the competitors, these extra miles should not pinch that much.

Interior
5.5/10

Open the door of the BMW 240i, and that wide grin on your face may just turn to a mere smile. The cabin is the part where the greatness, converts to bare good. The dashboard is adorned with no-nonsense straightforward gauges and a simple instrument panel, which further adds to the ride’s sporty vibe, well, in a way. To some, the M240i's cabin might be the biggest turn-off considering the minimalistic approach taken by the folks at BMW. However, you wouldn't really miss any essential feature here though.

Speaking of the roominess of M240i’s cabin, the front seats are impressive, with ample headroom and legroom, sufficient for taller occupants as well. However, the rear seats lack both roominess and practicality, deeming it unfit and cramped for adults.

The M240i employs high-class material across the panel, but there are some rough patches in there, where some of these materials feel uninspiring for a car in this price range. However, black leather sports seats, leather-wrapped M steering wheel, and premium upholstery complete the interiors for this Bimmer. Another major perk of sitting inside an M240i is, you’d barely hear what the outside world is going through, all thanks to its well-muffled engine.

Though we do not have the details for the British Comrade here, in real life, the Jaguar XE feels much roomier than the M240i, especially at the back. Disappointingly, Mercedes-Benz - a brand famous for its unmatched opulence and hospitality, stands at the last here. The Mercedes-Benz CLA seems to be the most cramped up car here in the comparison.

Does the BMW M240i comes loaded with tech inside?

The BMW M240i employs a 6.5-inch iDrive system, as its focal infotainment panel. One of the greatest salient features of this setup is its sensible menu system and an easy-to-use rotary knob that simplifies most of its operations. The interface does take a bit of time to get used to, but the iDrive is better, simpler, and much easier to use than most of its competitors in this class segment. Infact, that's the major USP of the iDrive as opposed to Audi A5's MMI.

Some of the most prominent features of the M240i’s iDrive infotainment system are:

  • BMW ConnectedDrive Services
  • 7-speaker sound system with CD Player
  • Onboard Hands-Free Communications System
  • AM/FM Radio
  • Bluetooth
  • Sat Navigation
  • USB Input

Creature comforts on offer in the BMW M240i

When you buy a Bimmer, you expect every ride to be a leisure ride and the M240i offers a number of features inside the cabin, in order to keep your expectations uplifted. Some of these features are:

  • 10-way power front sport seats; including 2-way power side bolsters, 1-way manual headrests and thigh support; driver memory for exterior mirror and seat positions
  • 60/40 split fold-down through-load rear seats
  • High-gloss Black interior trim with Pearl Gloss Chrome highlight
  • SensaTec upholstery
  • Folding rear-seat headrests

How much cargo can the BMW M240i carry?

The Bavarian manufacturer along with the rear seat space also chops down the boot space for the M240i. Moreover, the ride’s small back-seat area doesn't leave much room for additional cargo when the rear backseat is folded up.

Clearly not the M240i's forte, the cargo space is minimal and loading/unloading factor isn't very user-friendly either. The tailgate lifts pretty high up but owing to its low-slung stance, it doesn't really work wonders to improve the loading factor. The boot lip is also a bit high and you will have to lift the luggage up to some height before you can load it into the bay.

The M240i lags almost behind all of its competitors except the Mercedes-Benz CLA. The Audi A5, carrying it’s utilitarian character forward, provides the best-in-class cargo space of 21.8 cubic feet. The Jaguar XE makes a chase and ranks second with 16.1 cubic feet at the back, followed up by the BMW M240i, and finally the CLA 250 4Matic.

Compact, narrow, and short, these are the words that exquisitely define the BMW M240i coupe’s body character. Elements such as the kidney-grille, LED headlights, and the hard-lines running across it, help the M240i uplift the spirit of those old BMWs while providing all of today's innovations.

The M240i strives to create an ideal mix of simple aesthetics and a sporty aerodynamic body. The ride’s ground clearance is the greatest in the segment, which muscles the fact that the M240i can ravel across the uneven tarmac, with much more ease as compared to the rivals.

The front of the M240i gets decorated by the iconic kidney-grille and all-LED headlights. On top of that sloping roof, sits a shark fin antenna like a cherry on the cake. Dip down that slanting back glass and that athletic spoiler and mono sport exhaust pipe on either side, scream havoc.

The BMW M240i comes out as the shortest and the narrowest set of wheels in this segment, thus bolstering the fact that it’s more of a performance-focused beast than a plush family ferry. If you're looking for extravagance in terms of size, the Audi A5 is what you're eyeing for. It is the biggest Coupe in the discussion here, and certainly feels like it.

What are the highlights of the BMW M240i's exterior?

The M240i is a handsome vehicle and some of the most prominent features of its profile include:

  • Aerodynamic body kit
  • Rear spoiler
  • Chrome-line exterior trim
  • 18” alloy wheels
  • LED fog lights
  • LED headlights
  • Sport kidney-grille

BMW M240i vs. Audi A5 Sportback

The Audi A5 finds a place in the stack against the BMW M240i, but this “four-ringed” offering is an extreme opposite of the Bimmer. Moreover, where the M240i prioritizes performance, the A5 carries a tunnel vision towards comfort. The M240i triumphs in terms of power and performance, but the A5 hammers on the aspects where the M240i lacks - comfort and utility. The choice depends on your priority here.

BMW M240i vs. Mercedes-Benz CLA250 4Matic

The Mercedes CLA250 is one hell of a binding ride with extraordinary driving dynamics and is heavily armed with features. The CLA250 houses a proficient powertrain, rich seating and upscale cabin quality. Like the Audi A5, the Mercedes tilts towards extravagance and a lavish ride, and yet the silver bolt has enough grasp to please the speed knack inside you. One of the biggest unique selling proportion of CLA250 4Matic, which gives it a major plus over the M240i. In terms of reliability, however, we think its the BMW M240i you can count on.

Final Verdict

The BMW M240i is worth every buck if you are looking forward to procuring a hot, performance-focused set of wheels. The havoc-wreaking 3.0L 6 cylinder engine, along with those incredible driving dynamics, and compact size, can catapult the M240i on track. All of that while remaining tamed under city driving conditions.

However, the ride lacks upon the utilitarian aspect, with below-par boot and rear-seat space, but that’s just not the character of the M240i. You wouldn’t buy the M240i for its practicality or the rear seats. So, clearly the car is designed for fun and pragmatic.
