Overall Rating
This year what makes a return is a 6-cylinder engine in the M340i that can generate a humongous 382 hp, along with 369 lb.-ft. Of torque.
After witnessing a major facelift last year, the BMW 3-series is a name on the list of every driving enthusiast who wants a ride that can do both - deliver a flaming performance, and yet carry the sophistication of a family sedan.
The company offers the M340i in just one trim so no scope of getting choose over there. However, you can choose between an RWD configuration or an AWD (xDrive) configuration and we’d recommend you go for the RWD since it provides you with a more engaging drive. Another major reason to go for the RWD is that it comes as a complete savings bundle since it is less costly to procure and maintain while its greater MPG figures reduce your fuel pump spins.

Under that aesthetic hood of the BMW M340i, what rests is a capable is 3.0L twin-turbo inline 6 engine. This powerhouse pumps out a handsome figure of 382 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. Of the twisting force. This torque figure is present through a large rev range slab between 1600 and 4500 rpm. What comes as a disappointment is the absence of a manual transmission option. What slots in is a ZF sourced 8-speed shiftable automatic gearbox, which just does a spectacular job of diverting power to the rear wheels in the stock M340i and to all the wheels in the M340i xDrive.
The BMW M340i’s thurst feels robust throughout the rev-band and the transmission setup is always up for delivering precise and sharp transitions. In order to enhance the driving engagement, the M340i also gives you the option to take things in your own hands and use the steering-wheel-mounted paddles.

The BMW M340i is the only ride in this league that sans the V6 for an inline-6 formation and delivers respectable power figures. The Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 tucks the most number of steeds underneath its hood. The Mercedes-AMG C43 rakes in the second position with 385 horsepower, followed up closely by the BMW M340i at 382 hp and finally the Audi S4.
The BMW M340i is a hard off-the-mark puller, owing to its powerful inline-6 and the sharp ZF sourced 8-speed shiftable automatic gearbox. The Bimmer can pull off the 0-60 dash in 4.4 seconds on the stock RWD variant. However, add the xDrive factor to this mix, and the acceleration time comes down to 4.2 seconds.

The Mercedes-AMG C43 is the fastest of this lot to attain the 60 mph figure on its speedometer with a required time of just 4.1 seconds. The Audi S4 comes out as the second-fastest with a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds. The BMW M340i rakes in the third position with 4.4 seconds, and finally, the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 that kind of underutilizes its best-in-class power.
The BMW M340i may seem like an underdog in the 0-60 game, but one look at the quarter-mile figures and the Bimmer emerges as the ultimate champion with the best in class time of 12.3 seconds.
The BMW M340i comes fitted with standard M Sport brakes, in iconic M blue shade, that installs refined control to the M340i’s inflatable power. The ride offers 13.7-inch discs with four-piston calipers in the front, while 13.6-inch discs with single-piston caliper adorn the rear wheels.
The brake pedal of the BMW M340i is effortless and easy to modulate during calm drives but becomes stable when you are in a mood of some heated spins around the town. Though the M340i is always at par with the braking performance and feels firm and athletic in all modes.

The 60-0 data is not yet available for the BMW M340i. However, considering the fact that this ride gets M sport brakes as standard equipment, we can assure you that the braking performance is definitely not going to be any kind of a disappointment for the M340i.
The Bavarians lay great emphasis on the driving dynamics of their offerings, and the M340i is just another classic example of that. The M340i further pushes these dynamics up the notch, with the addition of a refreshed suspension on the standard 3-series platform. The M340i gets solidified springs, chunkier anti-roll bars, and trimmed ride height. The ride rolls upon 19-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber tires.
The M340i rolls over most of the pavement irregularities with ease, however, some harsh bumps transmit to the cabin. The Bimmer nails it around the corners as well, providing the driver a fun experience, spinning the ride around some sharp bends. M340i’s steering is one of the greatest places to get your hands-on. Steering effort feels light at low speeds and weights up relevantly when pinning that pedal. The feedback from the steering wheel is every bit great and feels right most of the time.
The M340i can be driven in three modes, namely: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. The Comfort mode makes up for a well-mannered, laid back driving with softer suspension settings and dialed-back throttle response. While the Sport and the Sport+ modes crisp up the steering and the dampers, enhancing the ride’s cornering capabilities.
We mean it when we say that the BMW M340i is an all-rounder machine. From blazing performance to a great fuel economy, the ride ticks all the boxes. The BMW M340i is rated to return an estimated combined mpg figure of 26 (22 city/ 30 highway). The BMW M340i gets a fuel tank that can contain up to 15.6 gallons of gasoline. Though it’s not the greatest of fuel tank capacity for a ride of this segment, yet seems decent.

The BMW M340i offers the best in class fuel economy figures, followed up by the Audi S4 with a combined mpg number of 24. The Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 and the Mercedes Benz AMG C43 stand alike with both of them offering combined mpg of 22.
The BMW M340i’s interior is an apt bundle of comfort and design. Speaking of the roominess of the M240i’s cabin, the front seats are impressive, with ample headroom and legroom, sufficient for taller occupants as well. The doorway head clearance is more than sufficient to facilitate getting in and out of the car. The M340i gets sport seats that are supportive and hold you in place while attacking the corners.
The material used inside the M340i though disappoints us a bit, as it’s only able to earn the acceptable tag, which could have been “great” otherwise. The rear seats of the M340i are also spacious enough to easily seat 2 adults. Though the ride is rated for a passenger capacity of 5 people, but with the center tunnel eating up most of the leg space, the case really does not seems so.

The BMW M340i’s interior is agreeable, but it just fails to match up the extravagance offered inside the Audi S4, or the Mercedes Benz AMG C43. A look inside the BMW M340i’s cabin and you’ll realize the downside of it, as compared to the C43 or the S4.
The M340i employs BMW’s iDrive 7 unit for its infotainment duties, that beams the data on a 10.2-inch touchscreen, which can be operated via a rotary knob, mounted on the center console. Both the control options are appealing to use and are great at feedbacks.
The iDrive arrangement manages all the features quite effectively but the interface may take a bit of time to get used to. The 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound takes it upon itself to amplify your driving experience with clean, rich, and polished sound.
Apple CarPlay is free to use for a year, after which BMW charges a fee of $80 a year for the subscription. Android Auto has not yet been welcomed on-board by the company though.
Some of the most prominent features of the M340i’s iDrive infotainment system are:
The utility is just another aspect of the M340i that increases our fondness towards this car even more. The BMW M340i does not bash upon the utility aspect just for the sake of performance. The trunk offers you a space of 17 cubic feet to store your belongings into. The rear seats can do a 40/20/20 front flip and lay flat down, increasing the storage space by a big margin. The M340i’s cabin further adds up a number of slots to store your personal belongings into.

The Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 follows up the Bimmer with 13.5 cubic feet, followed up the Audi S4 at 13.0 cubic feet. The Mercedes Benz AMG C43 ranks last, making a panting chase with just 12.6 cubic feet in the name of trunk space.
When you buy a Bimmer, you expect every ride to be a leisure ride and the M340i offers a number of features, in order to keep your expectations upright. Some of these features are:
The M340i sets itself apart from the 330i with the help of certain minor cosmetic tweaks. Elements such as large air damps, gray highlights on the grille, carbon fiber mirror caps, and rear veils, help you distinguish an M340i from a 330i while enhancing the sporty vibe for the ride.
Just like every damn BMW car in the world, the front of the M340i is ornamented by the iconic kidney-grille and LED headlights. On top of that sloping roof, a shark fin antenna rests as a cherry on the cake. Dip down that slanting back glass and that athletic lip spoiler and mono sport exhaust pipe on either side, warn the chasing cars to stay away.

The BMW M340i strikes an ideal balance of athleticism and utility with its body dimensions. The ride boasts just the right length, width, and height to pull off the plush family ferry profile, without compromising upon performance.
The M340i is a handsome vehicle and some of the most prominent features of its profile include:
The BMW M340i hosts a suite of standard safety features that ensure the safety of not just the driver but the passengers as well. Some of the most noteworthy safety features of the M340i include:
The Mercedes Benz AMG C43 Sedan has always been a solid contender of this segment. With a price tag of $55,250, the C43 comes fitted with a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 that can churn out a massive 385 horses along with 384 lb.-ft. Of torque, which can take this car from 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, which is the fastest sprinting time in this class. The C43 offers you a better-designed interior than the BMW M340i, thus scoring high on the plush factor. However, this opulence takes its fee as the Mercedes Benz AMG C43 is the highest priced and one of the least fuel-efficient rides of this segment.
Introduce yourself to the most reasonable offering of the segment, the Audi S4. Priced at a humble (comparatively) $50,200, the Audi S4 is a great set of wheels that has made its impression as an executive sedan. The S4 houses an Intercooled Turbo 3.0L V6 engine that fabricates 349 horses, which just happens to be the least power figure in this comparison. The S4 though with a fuel economy of 24, a luxurious cabin, and smooth driven capabilities, earns the tag of an ultimate fancy family ride which prioritizes comfort over performance.
The BMW M340i is the closest you can get to a 3-series as of now. With a mighty inline-6 engine paired with great drive dynamics, the M340i stands upon performance expectations you keep from a Bimmer. While the best in class fuel efficiency and cargo space, it does not let you down upon the sedan feel as well.
