Overall Rating
Thrusting the new X1 ahead of its competition will be the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine we are so used from the previous year models. So we know that this X1 is going to be fast.
Part of the second generation X1 lineup introduced in 2016, the 2020 BMW X1 is here in a relatively new avatar. Several design elements have been refreshed for the upcoming year. The changes were much needed in the X1 lineup as the crossover SUV segment is getting extremely competitive.
Of both the choices from the X1 lineup, the xDrive28i makes most sense. It’s the quicker of the lot. Also the all-wheel drive system can varyingly send all the power to either the front wheels or the rear wheels depending on the need of the hour. It is only about $2,000 more expensive than the base variant, and even with the price tag of $37,200, the xDrive28i is competitively priced as compared to the other cars in this segment.

For the year 2020, the refreshed BMW X1 will be available in two different trims. The first is the base sDrive28i variant. This variant will cost you a touch over $35,000. It’s a very well-rounded package and sets a benchmark for crossover SUVs.
The other variant is the xDrive28i which is about $2,000 more expensive than the base variant. Both the variants will derive power from the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, and will send all 228 hp and 258 lb.-ft. torque to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The difference between the two trims is their drivetrain options. The sDrive28i is a front-wheel driven SUV. The second xDrive28i version features an all-wheel drivetrain.
We recommend:

The 2020 BMW X1 which is a part of the second generation X1 introduced to us in 2016, uses the same time-tested turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine for both its variants, the sDrive28i and the xDrive28i.

The engine makes 228 hp and 258 lb.-ft. torque, and when mated to the smoothly shifting 8-speed automatic, all that power can either be sent to the front wheels or all the wheels of the X1. The sDrive28i is the front wheel drive variant, while the xDrive28i features an all-wheel drivetrain.
Standard on the 2020 BMW X1 is a front-wheel drive system. The other optional all-wheel drive system also focuses on the front wheels most of the time. However, in certain scenarios, the all-wheel drivetrain can put almost 100 percent of the engine’s power to the wheels in the back.
Consequently, with the all wheel drive system, the 2020 X1 manages to fly past the 60 miles per hour mark in just 6.3 seconds. The base front-wheel drivetrain is slightly slower. It takes the sDrive28i variant 6.6 seconds to attain the speed of 60 miles per hour taking off from a standstill.

Not much is known about the brakes on the 2020 BMW X1. It is only after the car is officially launched in the market that experts will be able to come up with a complete take on this Beamer’s stopping capabilities.

But this X1 will get automatic emergency braking as standard. So rest assured the new X1 will be adequately safe for all its occupants.
The 2020 BMW X1 might be an SUV but it a lot like a sports car. It’s ride quality is more firm than an average SUV. So the X1 makes getting in and out of corners seem pretty easy as compared to other tall-riding crossovers.
On the flipside, this Beamer can literally be a throbbing pain in your hind haunches. It prefers crashing into bumps rather than gliding over them. Making things all the more bumpy can be the X1’s larger 19-inch wheels. So sticking to the 18-inch rollers will be a much wiser choice.
On the other hand, the steering on the 2020 X1 is prompt to say the least. It is electrically assisted, and responds well enough to make driving this X1 a total joy.
The BMW X1 has the most versatile engine of all crossover SUVs in this comparison. It is the quickest of the lot, and at the same time, even the most fuel efficient. At a combined MPG rating of 27 miles per gallon, the sDrive28i is more economical than the Evoque, and at par with the Q3 and even the GLA 250.

But it really manages to shine through in the cities and on the highways with an MPG rating of 23 and 32 miles per gallon respectively. The all-wheel drive variant xDrive28i is slightly less economical in this aspect though. It returns an estimated MPG rating of 25 miles per gallon combined.
The inside of the 2020 BMW X1 looks and feels a lot more premium now. Thanks to the new 8.8-inch touchscreen which BMW has made a standard offering for all X1s. Leather upholstery is also standard.
However, certain elements do feel flimsy and plasticy. Even the standard seats aren’t very comfortable. It is recommended that you swap those with more sculpted sport seats that are a part of the M Sport package. Otherwise, this Beamer offers best in class headroom and legroom in the front as well as the second row.

The cockpit has been laid out in a way to make things easier for the driver. The instrument cluster looks significantly elegant and is very comprehensive. The steering wheel has an adjustable feature, but both angle and reach feel slightly restricted. Also, getting in and out of this SUV is pretty easy. A result of its tall ride height.
The new 8.8-inch iDrive touchscreen infotainment system is now standard on all X1 variants and feels very intuitive to use. The infotainment is loaded with tech like:
A rotary knob beneath the driver’s right hand commands all of the above.
Probably the best part about the new X1’s interior is its trunk. It is big, carpeted and features a chrome trim. But it’s not just the layout that makes the boot so special. At 27.1 cubic feet, the 2020 X1 boasts a bigger boot than all of its competitors.

Several features ensure that the new X1 is as comfortable as an SUV is expected to be. These comfort features include:
When BMW launched their X7 SUV, all everyone ever seemed to talk about was its large imposing grille. So BMW let all its other SUVs follow in the same footsteps. The new X1 is no exception.
At the front, the large X7 inspired kidney-grille are joined at the center with the help of a chrome piece. The bumper is also more chiseled and features more chrome accents than before. The LED fog lights replace the round ones, and the lip below is bolder and more highlighted. Overall, the refreshed X1 looks quite desirable from the front.
However, the “facelifted” 2020 X1 limits its refreshed design mostly to its face. At the back things are more or less the same. The tinted LED taillights have been slightly redesigned and the tailpipes are 0.8 inch larger than the outgoing model. The rear bumper is also new and the X1 logo has been moved from over the right taillight to the bottom left corner.

Other than that, BMW hasn’t fixed anything that did not need any fixing. The new X1 looks a lot more aggressive and after being around for quite a while, a redesign was desperately needed.
The most noteworthy design elements of the 2020 BMW X1 include:
The 2020 BMW X1 is going to be equipped with all the necessary safety features to match its performance and practicality. These features include:
Some might argue that the Q3 is a great crossover SUV. To them, we say think again. If its performance you’re looking for, the X1 is quicker than the Q3. Talking about fuel efficiency, the X1 is again the one with better MPG rating. Eventually, if practicality is your key concern, the X1’s boot is so big, it can carry around the Q3’s now fading reputation all around town and still have some spare space left.
Both these SUVs will be hitting the market in 2020 with some serious upgrades on the inside and outside. However, what sets them apart is the fact that the X1 is bit more track focused with its stiff suspension setup. While the Evoque offers off-roading prowess like on other SUV. The only downside to the Evoque is its price. It is about $7,000 more expensive than the X1.
With much needed changes, the all new BMW X1 will hit the markets this coming winter. So brace yourself. The X1 definitely excites more than ever in its latest iteration. It’s powerful, practical and adequately efficient. If only BMW manages to make it just a touch more comfortable on the inside, the X1 will turn out to be an even harder to beat package.
