Overall Rating
BMW X4 is a fastback derivative of BMW X3.
The X4 is a fastback derivative of BMW X3. But there is more than that meets the eye. BMW has tweaked the suspension and added a host of performance options to go fast as well. It has a stiffened chassis for better body control.
The BMW X4 is a feature-rich vehicle which comes in only one trim. The flexibility of add on packages is that it allows us to customize as per our needs.
We recommend you to go for three specific packages which enhances the character of the car without compromising on the cost. With the addition of Dynamic handling and M-Sport Package 2, the X4 handles and sprints sharper and faster. The parking assistant plus package helps in maneuvering the vehicle easily in challenging environments.
These three packages help in boosting the X4 with features which come in close with its higher M- model, but at a fraction of the cost.

Which trim should you go for?
The BMW X4 is a feature-rich vehicle which comes in only one trim. The flexibility of add on packages is that it allows us to customize as per our needs.
We recommend you to go for three specific packages which enhances the character of the car without compromising on the cost. With the addition of Dynamic handling and M-Sport Package 2, the X4 handles and sprints sharper and faster. The parking assistant plus package helps in manoeuvring the vehicle easily in challenging environments. These three packages help in boosting the X4 with features which come in close with its higher M- model, but at a fraction of the cost.
The BMW X4 is powered by a 2.0L twin-turbocharged inline four-pot which chucks out a generous 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It carries forward the same power plant from last year but with certain tweaks to keep it energetic.
The power produced from the X4 is moderate when compared to its competition. The smooth 8-speed transmission does the job of transferring the power with minimal lag.
The twin-turbo setup helps the beemer pack a serious punch. The all-wheel-drive system improves the handling of the crossover which makes it a lot of fun around corners.

The Audi SQ5 is the clear triumphant of the lot with a whopping 349 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque from a 3.0L V6. The X4, Macan and GLC 300 come near each other with similar performance figures.
The all-wheel-drive system of the X4 helps it propel to 60 MPH in 6 seconds. This figure is impressive given the sheer size and curb weight of the beemer.
The emission figures are a minimum of 7.1 tons per year which is high because of the twin-turbo setup.

The Audi SQ5 once again slaughters the competition with a 0-60 MPH time of 5.1 seconds. It is a whole one second faster than the closest competitor. The Quattro system is the ace card of Audi’s performance.
The smooth power delivery of X4 is soothing as it makes the ride much more comfortable and relaxed. The 8-speed transmission helps in propelling the vehicle without any hiccups. The handling is good on the beemer bu8t with the addition if the Dynamic Handling and M-Sport package it takes the handling a notch up. It is precise around corners and has almost minimal body roll. The cabin is well insulated from road and wind noise.
There are four distinct driving modes available. They are EcoPro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ which alters the driving dynamics.
Braking on the X4 is composed and linear. The pedal is compact and the pressure linear. The adaptive dampers take care of excessive leans while braking in corners.
An optional M-brakes package is available in the dynamic handling package which has a larger master cylinder and eye-catchy blue-painted calipers.

The front and rear rotors are a moderate 13 inch in diameter which is the least of the lot. This doesn’t necessarily translate to poor braking. All the competitors have similar brake dimensions but the low curb weight of the GLC 300 makes it a surer footed stopper.
The BMW X4 returns an impressive combined 25 MPG. It is fuel-efficient for the power it produces. The active xDrive system manages the power sent to all four wheels for better efficiency.

The beemer is the most fuel-efficient of the lot. The Mercedes Benz GLC 300 follows closely with a combined 23 MPG. The Porsche Macan and Audi SQ5 are the least efficient. The Audi justifies its lower numbers with a much more powerful 3.0L V6 engine.
The X4 has nil quality issues with leatherette and trims layered with dark oak wood on the dashboard. The fit and finish is top-notch and typical BMW. The dashboard is well laid out with the infotainment system occupying the central area with an array of buttons and knobs flush with the dashboard. The center is driver-focused which is good attention to detail.
The seating in the X4 is comfortable, at least for the front row passengers. The raked roof makes head bumps common in the second row. All round, the seats are well contoured with good under-thigh support and wrapped in exclusive materials. The legroom is abundant in both rows.

In spite of the restricted rear headroom, X4 manages to provide commendable space as compared to its competitors. The Audi SQ5 still has the edge with marginally more space.
The center of the dashboard is laid out with a 10.25-inch iDrive Infotainment system which is super easy to use. The driver-centric design makes accessing it comfortable. The X4 has gesture control which helps in doing various functions with hand gestures.
Infotainment Features
BMW X4 has a cargo volume of 18.5 cubic feet which is moderate. It is enough for the family weekend getaways. It loses out on volume due to the body structure. But fold down the rear seats and you get 50 cubic feet.

The highlighting feature of the beemer is the swooping rear quarter which differentiates it from the X3. It has the stance of an SUV with a coupe-like roofline. The X4 is technically an X3 with a coupe structure past the B-Pillar.
The beemer is designed minimally. It has flowing lines and a coupes rear quarter design differentiating it from the X3. It flaunts a 19-inch wheels which goes on well with the form factor. The dominating front grille along with the LED headlights and fog lamps makes its presence felt on the road. The X4 has the largest footprint of the lot. The ground clearance of 8 inches is off-road worthy.

A host of critical active safety features are standard on the X4. But passive features like a surround-view camera, active lane control, etc. come in as extra add ons.
The GLC 300 is Mercedes’s answer for the X4. It is a fully-fledged crossover. But in spite of having more power, it lags in acceleration. The seating is not as comfortable as the beemer and the cargo is cramped. It has a lesser MPG than the X4. As an overall package, it fails to topple the BMW X4.
The Macan is the crossover from Porsche which shares the same downside as the Beemer. Its rear headroom is restricted by roofline. It also has the least cargo space among the lot. It is not as engaging to drive as the beemer. Porsche is notorious with optional features that can shoot up the retail price. The Macan drinks a lot due to its inefficient turbo. All of the aspects point out the beemer to be a better car.
The SQ5 has shocked us with its aggressive pricing. A V6 producing way more power than its competition and a tag of $52900, it is one hell of a deal. It is the most powerful and has an equal amount of handling character to back it up. It has a well laid out interior which is cleaner than the beemers. The extreme value for money and top-notch quality makes it a better choice any day!
The BMW X4 has a potent engine, a well-balanced chassis, and great looks. If you can live with a slightly cramped second row, then it is a good choice. It is an all-rounder until the Audi SQ5 comes in. With a much more powerful engine and better interior space than the beemer, it doesn’t have much against it. With a price tag of $52900, there is no going back now.
The Audi SQ5 is the better overall package with better interiors, driving dynamics and 100 more horses for literally the same price!
