To accommodate the new engine Chevrolet completely reshuffled the trim structure of the 2020 Blazer. No more clothes, and buyers now get to pick from the five available trims namely L, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT and the Premier. Prices for the base ‘L’ start from $28,800 and go all the way up to $42,700 for the range topping ‘Premier’.
The L and 1LT trims come standard with a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder and can be had as front-wheel drive only. The 2LT and 3LT get the new 2.0 liter turbo inline four engine as standard and can be optioned with all-wheel drive and the available V6 unit. The top of the line Premier comes fully loaded with all the goodies on offer and gets a standard V6 engine. The Premier can be had with all-wheel drive as an option.

The engine family in the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer that has now grown up to three in number is quite effective in its operation. The base 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine makes 193 horses and 188 ft-lbs of torque that is adequate enough, if not impelling. Power delivery is smooth and crisp, but its the hesitant transmission that makes the engine feel drowsy. The 9-speed automatic is shy on downshifts and does not respond as quickly as the one in a Ford Edge or a Hyundai Santa Fe.

The Blazer is most lively when powered by the 3.6 liter V6 engine. 308 horses charging at the flick of a feet provoke confident propulsion down hushed overtakes. Those looking for a better balance between power and efficiency would be pleased by the new 2.0 liter turbo 4-cylinder. The new engine churns out 230 hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque, slotting in perfectly between the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder and the V6 powertrains.
A hazy transmission and a mediocre engine are certainly not part of the equation that evaluates spiritedness of any car. Unsurprisingly though, the front-wheel drive only Blazer with the 2.5 liter engine runs from 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds. A similarly priced Ford Edge SE stands out as the most compelling product among its rivals. The Ford’s powerful base engine along with a quicker transmission translates into a best in class 0-60 mile run of 6.8 seconds.

Get a 2020 Chevrolet Blazer paired with the V6 engine and things change pretty quickly. The extra muscle under the hood as well as enhanced throttle response adds an even stronger Camaro-esque flavor into it. The V6 powered Blazer races past the 60 mph mark from standstill in under 6.5 seconds, that is overwhelming for its class.
Take the Blazer out for a spin and in no time you realize how well it drives. Its driving dynamics very well complement its sporty and aggressive exterior appeal. It offers a comfortable ride quality with the suspension being very observant. However, when equipped with the larger set of 21 inch wheels, the ride quality does degrade by a fair extent. The steering wheel is very precise in its business making it sporty and agile handler.
The dual clutch all-wheel drive system knocks out torque steer and is capable of diverting 85% of power to a single wheel, when needed. The AWD system provides excellent traction and also enhances the overall performance. The Blazer feels planted and composed on almost all occasions except for a small hint of body roll visible around turns. However, even around twisty curves, the Blazer feels grounded and in complete control.
Braking department in the Chevy Blazer is headed by ventilated discs with ABS in all four corners. The brake pedal feels firm and strong and actively responds to driver inputs. All trims come equipped with the same braking apparatus and the base ‘L’ stopped from 60-0 in 126 feet.

The braking performance is certainly not the best in class and is on the average side. Compare those numbers with its rivals and the Hyundai Santa Fe outshines everything else in the class with a 116 ft stopping distance from 60-0.
The 2020 Chevrolet Blazer is not a thrift shop among its segment for sure. Even with the comparatively smaller 193 hp base engine, its 23 mpg combined fuel economy, just ticks the class average. What most buyers will like though is the fact that the decline in mpg figures is very minimal when upgrading to the higher engines. The 2.0 turbo delivers 20/26/23 mpg with front-wheel drive and 18/25/21 with all-wheel drive. Even with the AWD hooked onto it, the mighty V6’s output is exactly similar to the 2.0 turbo with AWD. That's definitely impressive.

Flip around the spec-sheet of its rivals and surprisingly, the most robust among the lot, the Toyota Rav4 promises the best fuel economy. The Rav4’s smallest proportions complemented by a body that is the lightest among the competition helps it top the economy test with 30 mpg combined.
Step inside the Blazer and the interior arrangement compels you to think that, is this an enlarged Camaro? The dashboard layout, circular AC vents with embedded temperature control seems that they have been straight away picked up from its sportier sibling. Build quality is solid and the higher trims do get soft touch plastic and leather treatment. However, the plastic surfaces on the upper door sills and lower portions of the central console feel very cheap, especially at an above $40k tag.
All the trims except the base get 8-way power driver's seat whereas the 3LT and Premier trims add up a 6-way power front passenger seat. 3LT trim gets heated front seats while the Premier adds in Ventilated front seats as well as heated rear seats. The seats are comfortable and offer adequate room all around. Taking advantage of the longer body, the rear seats offer generous leg room, however the lower swooping roof eats up some headroom, troubling taller occupants. Since the Blazer has the widest body among its segment, it affords the best in class shoulder room as well.

The Chevrolet Blazer is not a sturdy machine that endeavors wilderness. Instead, it focuses on sportiness and dynamic handling. Be it the way it drives, it looks or its interiors, its aspirations of wearing the Camaro’s boot is clearly visible. Because of its streamlined orientation, its interior lacks the richness and ambience of some of its rivals like the Santa Fe.Â
For those familiar with the Camaro’s infotainment should have no problem getting used to the one in the Blazer. The 8.0 inch touchscreen infotainment with a clean layout and minimal physical buttons are picked right away from the Camaro. Named as the Chevrolet Infotainment System 3, it gets Apple CarPlay, Android Auto as well as Wi-Fi capability. A simple interface, pleasing graphics and quick responses make the infotainment system clutter-free and very easy to operate.
One parameter where the Chevy Blazer falls behind all of its rivals is its meager 30.5 cu-ft of cargo space. The story is the same either with the rear seats up or down. The smaller cargo box comes even with comparatively better dimensions than most of its rivals. The cramped cargo area is an aftermath of higher concentration on more room in front of the rear seats rather than at the back.

Among its competitors, the Ford Edge takes the lead with the best in class luggage compartment of 39.2 cu-fts. Ford’s smarter design with a smaller hood, allowing for more space between the A and D pillars and extra body height gets the job done.
The Chevy Blazers biggest USP is its exterior design and needless to say, it is the best looking thing in its segment. Take a glance at this beauty and you are instantly reminded of the pony Camaro. The massive hexagonal grille up front bifurcated by a chrome strip upon which sits the proud bowtie, give it an aggressive face.
The slim LED DRLs integrated with the chrome line, adds to its fiery while the low sitting LED headlamps and LED tail lamps look fresh and modern. However, its the side profile that makes the Blazer distinct in its class. The swooping roofline along with a window line that goes upwards and integrates with the rear roof spoiler gives it a striking presence.

The other members in the segment that the Blazer competes with wear a more traditional outfit and lacks the Chevy’s youthfulness. The all new Santa Fe does carry a refreshed silhouette with similar headlamp arrangement, but it's more of a family mover. The way in which the Blazer wraps style, aggression and sportiness around its long body, no other product in the segment does. At least as of now.
The Chevrolet Blazer certainly has a striking exterior and impressive ride and handling but what it lacks is a balanced suite of tech and safety equipment. Features like Wireless smartphone charging, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist are not standard even on the above $42k Premier trim. Instead, these advanced safety features are part of an optional ‘Driver Convenience Package’ that can be bundled only with the Premier and RS trims.
With the optional packages installed, the dollars on the tag pile close to $50k. Other rivals in the segment like the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Toyota Rav4 are not only very well equipped but also save a lot of your hard earned dollars. To disappoint further the Chevrolet no longer offers free trial subscription to OnStar services that packs in features like Automatic Crash Response, Emergency services and Crisis assist. The lower priced Hyundai Santa Fe comes with three years of free subscription to emergency services similar to OnStar.
The standard safety equipment offered with the Blazer is pretty basic as per modern standards and are found even in entry level products.
The Ford Edge has always been one of the fat boys of the segment in which the Blazer competes. It might not have the charm of the Blazer or even its fresh interior vibe, but it does have some niceties in its soul. Unlike the Chevy, it has some decent off-roading skills along with powerful and peppy engine even in the base models. Though its steering is not as communicative as the Blazer, nor it handles like the Chevy, but it does offer a more silent and comfortable ride quality. The Edge is faster, more feature packed, slightly more fuel efficient as well as much better cargo capacity.
The elegant and classy Korean is one of the most value binded products in its segment. Unlike the Blazer’s sporty ambitions, the Santa Fe focuses more on comfort and convenience. It might not be as good as the Chevy in handling, but it offers a far better ride quality and comfort. Compared to the Blazer, the Santa Fe is miles ahead in terms of interior fit and finish and feature packaging. With the available three row seating, it also offers better sense of practicality and with the third bench down, it offers better cargo room too.
Chevrolet Blazer vs Nissan Murano
The Nissan Murano gets closest to the Chevrolet Blazer in terms of exterior appeal. Although the Murano is not as sleek as the Blazer but it does wear Nissan’s distinctive style cues that make it look more mature. The V6 engine offered with the Murano is not as enthusiastic and exciting as the Blazer, so is its handling. However unlike the sporty Blazer, the Murano offers a much smoother ride quality and better interior materials. The Murano is also far better equipped with a plethora of safety and tech features along with a bigger boot.
The Rav4 has been Toyota’s best selling SUV for all the right reasons. The Chevy Blazer might flash its youthful and stylish attire, but it doesn't catches up with the Rav4’s overall utility. Unlike the city dwelling Blazer, the Rav4 carries some serious off-roading skills and feels more solid and robust. The Rav4’s new engine might seem underpowered and not as intriguing as the Blazer, but it very well balances its multi-utility. The interior space is slightly more cramped than the Blazer, but the fit and finish as well as the interior layout is far better than the Chevy. The Rav4 also offers better fuel economy, more cargo room, tons of standard safety equipment and yes the incredible reliability of a Toyota.
Out in the market for a two-row mid-size crossover with sharp handling and most importantly, a very distinctive looking one ? If that's the case, your quest should certainly end with the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer. The chevy offers delightful handling, sporty interiors and an eye-catching design. However, if value is also a part of your desirability, there are products like the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Toyota Rav4 which offer more wholesome package.
