2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Review

Pros

  • Mighty aesthetics
  • Gorgeous road dynamics
  • Aptly priced

Cons

  • Exhaust notes lack adrenaline
  • Handling could be tacky at times

Shortly after the C8 reveal, GM showcased the new Stingray convertible to attendees at the California event. With the big unveiling finally complete, GM is planning a nationwide tour with its new supercar, visiting dealerships across the country.

Overview

We have found the icing while the cake is still fresh” and that’s how we feel about the launch of new mid-engine 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8. Breaking most of the stereotypes, the new Corvette is agile, funky, pushy and above all, affordable. Available in both Coupe and Convertible versions, the 2020 Corvette will only be available with an automatic transmission.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

Top or no top, the new 2020 Corvette is one hell of an addition to the Stingray family. The much-anticipated mid-engine setup of the Corvette is on the verge of perfection with features and specs outshining the competitors in almost every aspect. These features include obviously a dual boot setup because the engine is now placed in the center, a carbon fiber steering wheel, supersport summer tires, and a heads up display.

It’s ironic to understand that the 2020 Stingray is not just a style statement but a performance machine with numerous capabilities. Priced significantly lower than its competitors in the segment, the Corvette C8 seems to be an all-rounder on the pitch.

Which trim to go for?

It's a no brainer to realize that all 3 trim levels of the Corvette are well equipped in most of the domains. We would choose the 1LT coupe of the 2020 Corvette Stingray just for its price and feature-rich folio. Couple it with the Z51 package and you will have a well-equipped speed monster at your disposal.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

A 6.2-liter V8 charges the 2020 Corvette Stingray while keeping it on top of the speedster hierarchy. Promising both thrill and adrenaline, the Stingray is designed to outsmart the darkest of sharks in the school of fishes. Matted to the V8 is an 8-speed automatic transmission that performs its duties like a battalion.

Witnessing a dual-clutch automatic transmission for the first time, the eighth generation of Corvette is a keeper in all its senses.

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette makes 490 horsepower at 6450 rpm and makes 465 lbs./ft. of torque at 5150 rpm. Adding the Z51 package to the system will fetch another 5 hp from the V8 making a total of 495 hp produced. While the competition is fierce, the 2020 Audi R8 coupe produces a tremendous power figure of 562 hp but lacks in terms of torque produced. The 2020 911 Carrera is the least power-producing vehicle of them all mentioned here.

How fast is the C8 Corvette Stingray?

‘Lightning fast’ is not just an expression but reality for the new mid-engine Corvette C8. The new setup not only opens up more space to keep your luggage but makes the sports mobile much more subtle and equiweighted all throughout.

Rear-wheel drive train keeps the car functional in both road and track conditions while giving the initial straight line push to the punchiness of C8.

Accelerating like a mad wolf on steroids, the 2020 Corvette Stingray C8 Coupe can go 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds and cover quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds. It is quite evident that the C8 is the fastest accelerating machine out of the 3-speed monsters listed here. The 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S does 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4 seconds and has a quarter-mile time of about 11.3 seconds. Audi R8, on the other hand, clocks 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds while covers a quarter of a mile in 10.6 seconds.

How has the mid-engine setup affected the Ride and handling of the C8 Corvette?

‘Buttery smooth’ is not an expression we will use for metal carcasses on four wheels but this beauty of a Sportster is meaner on the road then it looks. Sitting closer to the ground than its predecessors, the 2020 Corvette Stingray rides smooth and agile on straight lines while curves test its limits. Proving its worth, the C8 performs jumble-humble dance of the jungle in its super designed suspension mechanics.

A well-designed steering sits in perfect proportion to the driving with super command over the wheels. Trust, or no trust, the steering keeps the wheels as close to the ground and command with precision. City driving can be tricky because of admirers waving at you on intersections but other than that, it just pops and crackles all the way.

How does it fare on the braking fare?

If you look closer, the 2020 Corvette Stingray C8 comes with the smallest brakes of them all but still performs adequately well. Stopping a 3362 lbs. car cruising on triple-digit speeds is no child's play and this isn’t a lego car as well.

In terms of the overall feel, the brakes inspire a tremendous amount of confidence at all moments. The Corvette maintains a linear path under heavy brake application and doesn't let the tail sway away.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

With new generations, we as humans are growing more and more efficient and so is the case with cars. The 2020 Corvette Stingray has one of the highest fuel economy among its competitors and is definitely not a fuel guzzler. For the prize the C8 is placed at, its economy is at par with standards.

The 2020 Corvette Stingray C8 has a fuel economy of 18.1 miles per gallon on the city roads while 26 miles per gallon on the highway. This gives the Corvette a combined fuel mileage of about 22 miles per gallon. The Carrera S goes for 18 miles in a gallon of fuel within the city while R8 clocks just 13 miles per gallon. On the highway, Carrera S goes for 24 miles while R8 runs for 20 miles per gallon.

Interior
7.5/10

The new Corvette interiors define itself as 2 people set up with most of the driving consoles scattered around the driver. The overall space is shifted towards the front to accommodate the mid-engine setup of the sports mobile while headspace is lowered keeping dynamics in mind. Real metal, leather, and suede fill the spaces all around while a prominent center armrest takes up most of the space. An infotainment screen facing towards the driver with a squarish steering wheel in the front makes the cockpit look engaging and interesting.

What about the Interiors of the C8 Corvette?

For 2 people who can find space in the all-new mid-engine 2020 Corvette Stingray C8, the seating is above standards and beyond comfort. These specially designed buckets are not just easy on the ergonomics but also soothes the senses with a sense of plush and luxury.

Built with leather or optional suede, the seating on the Corvette is functional in all sense. While it's difficult to find flaws at this price point, there are some cost cuttings that are evident in the cabin. Specifically, in the door panels and the dashboard and the switches which will remind you of other Chevrolet cars.

Adding to the comfort is more than enough leg room which is the highlight of the interiors in the 2020 Corvette Stingray C8. The headroom may prove to be a bit cramped but that’s just because of the shape of the car and will not take much time to get used to.

How does the Infotainment setup fare??

With the 7th generation of the Corvette, Chevrolet nailed it with the infotainment setup onboard. With the 8th gen Corvette, Chevrolet engineers have nailed it out of the park. The touchscreen unit on offer is the best that has been ever put in a Corvette. The sunlight legibility is decent and all the text and the numbers are readable, even on the brightest of days. Connectivity options on offer may put to shame, some of the most utilitarian cars even that cost a fraction of the Corvette.

The infotainment features of 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Coupe includes the following features:

  • SiriusXM AM/FM/HD/Satellite with seek-scan
  • Speed sensitive volume
  • 8" touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto
  • Bose performance 14 speaker audio system
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot capable internet access
  • Steering wheel mounted audio controls
  • Key-in-ignition warning

How big is the trunk of the Corvette?

Automakers today know, the sales of a car depends not just on its performance but on numerous things such as how many bags you can fit in the cargo. Now, the 2020 Corvette Stingray C8 is not a cargo machine but it still can carry the highest volume of luggage among all its competitors. And with features such as foot function boot lid open and low trunk height, carrying airport transfers will not be an issue here.

What features to expect on the inside?

The interior features of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Coupe are:

  • Heated and ventilated 8-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Rear window defroster
  • Steering wheel mounted control

Exterior
8.5/10

If Michel Buble’s ‘Sway with me’, had an expression, this sport coupe can do justice to it. Entering the eighth year of its production, the 2020 Corvette Stingray C8 exteriors are mesmerizing and sharp under the spell of charm and fury. Front face form is developed keeping the Corvette badge in mind with its edgy and sharp ‘V’ structure.

Following the lines, the V marks the front engraved endurance while a rock structure follows the suite. Smart LED in the front shining the mighty history of this iconic Sportback, the Corvette looks like a humble son of a privileged family.

One of the most iconic features of the Corvette exterior is the extra intake vents located on the B pillar making the car look wider and more planted. Walk to the rear and you may witness what we call ‘looking through the body’. A glass mirror provides an opportunity to see the big V8 sitting right behind the cabin. A brilliantly sparkling LED tail lamps and a well-designed lip spoiler gives the 2020 Corvette an interesting appeal.

What are the most notable features on the outside?

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Coupe comes with exterior features such as:

  • Composite body material
  • Black grille
  • Rear wing spoiler
  • Metallic paint
  • Rocker panel extensions
  • Power remote heated manual folding side-view door mirrors with turn signal indicator

Safety
7.5/10

While safety isn't the most talked-about thing on sportscars, Chevrolet has that ground covered as well. Chevrolet offers a plethora of features onboard all their cars, currently on sale. With features like Teen driver assist and advanced blind spot monitoring system as standard, the C8 Corvette, isn't just fast but safe as well Here are a few notable highlights of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Coupe comes fitted with features such as:

  • Front and rear ventilated disc brakes
  • Fixed front head restraints
  • Side-impact bars
  • Electronic stability
  • Occupant sensing airbags
  • Traction control
  • ABS and driveline traction control
  • Front seatbelt pretensioners
  • Tracker system

Competition
7.0/10

2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Coupe VS 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe

Chevrolet seems to be painting itself in red and cheering the spirit of Christmas with the launch of the all-new mid-engine Corvette. Costing lowest among all its competitors, the Corvette stands head to head with the 911 Carrera S coupe and stands tall with more power and torque figures. Better engines and brilliant designs keep the Stingray over the 911. Also, when compared on the grounds of track performances, Corvette takes the center stage due to its more aero dynamism. Great fuel economy sweetens the deal and makes the coupe relevant for almost all benchmarks.

2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Coupe VS 2020 Audi R8 Quattro Coupe

The R8 has been a flagship of speed for a long time now and to compete well with it is the eighth generation Corvette with the mid-engine setup. A brilliant price point makes the Corvette one hell of an option in the segment. On one hand, where R8 is more of a track car, the Corvette serves wider grounds to be used as a daily driver. Choose the Stingray for its design and heart while get the R8 for that nimble, raw torque figures because of its low power to weight ratio.

Final Verdict
8.6/10

Both coupe and Convertible Corvettes are like those skilled twin brothers who end up studying the geekiest of subjects but perform well in quirky job roles. Mutating to a new engine setup with better handling and dynamics, the 2020 Corvette Stingray C8 is as good on the roads as on the tracks. And guess what?

It only costs about $60,000, that’s half the price of what you can get among its competitors. Go the Corvette way and not a single drop of distrust will cross your heart.
