2020 Ford F-450 SuperDuty diesel Review

Pros

  • Upper trim levels offer good options
  • Fair starting price
  • Powerful turbo diesel V8 engine
  • Spacious interior
  • Absolute towing prowess

Cons

  • Interior features are outdated
  • Price maxes in the $100k area
  • Large 19.5-inch tires are expensive to replace

The handling of the F-450 is much more sensitive than an actual truck thanks to its adaptive steering system. The F-450 is the biggest star of attraction for its mountainous towing capacity. When fixed with a gooseneck trailer, this truck can tow as much as 35,000 pounds.

Overview

Since the 1940s, Ford has been in the business of producing trucks and have gained a substantial hold over the pickup truck market. Currently, the F-series are the best-selling trucks in America stomping both FCA and GM below. The Ford F-450 was first unveiled in 1999 and immediately saw the demand and rise in sales due to its heavy towing capacity.

This heavy-duty truck is regarded differently from its smaller siblings since it was radically built on a different platform. In 2017, the newest F-series trucks were introduced and several design improvements have taken place for these new versions such as replacing the steel body with a lighter aluminum structure. This major change enabled the F-450 to grow light in weight and also caused a rise in fuel economy.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Ford markets the F-450 Super Duty in various trim levels according to the buyer’s choice. Ford offers a lot of options in trim models and all the features are segregated in ascending order. The 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty is available in six trims. They include XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. Though many features differ in different trims, all the models get a standard 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine. Except for Limited trim, all other models are available in the rear-wheel-drive configuration. Check out the table below to understand the distribution of exclusive features in various trim models.

Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Ford has always been the pride of America for consistently creating affordable and reliable vehicles in the industry. J.D. Power didn’t rate the Ford F-450 for its reliability but the blue oval has a great reputation as a brand. According to Consumer Reports, Ford was ranked in the top ten brands producing the most reliable vehicles. As for ownership costs, it costs around $2,000 considering the annual average maintenance and repair costs. Compared to its competitors, the figure is significantly less. But get ready to face the heavy fuel costs of the F-450 which can go up to $16,000 for a period of five years.

Warranty

There is nothing special about the warranty packages of the 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty as it is the same as other F-Series trucks. The basic bumper-to-bumper warranty is available for three years and 36,000 miles while both the powertrain and 24-hour roadside assistance stays in effect for a period of five years or 60,000 miles.

Criteria

Period

Limited Warranty

3 years or 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain Warranty

5 years or 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-Hour Roadside Assistance

5 years or 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Corrosion

5 years/ Unlimited Warranty

Ford clearly stated that only the diesel powertrain users will be accessible to an extended warranty. The warranty can be claimed within 5 years or mileage not more than 100,000. This is a much-needed option since diesel engines are more prone to repairs.

Miles Per Dollar

Miles Per Dollar ratio is calculated by considering the annual distance covered to annual fuel costs. The fuel costs can go up to $3,200 per year. The average annual distance is taken as 15,000 miles assuming that the vehicle will be used for everyday driving. Hence, the ratio comes out to be 4.6 miles per dollar. To be precise, it costs 0.21 cents per mile.

Buying Advice

Obviously, the Ford F-450 Super Duty is perfect for towing heavy loads. But it might be quite confusing for you to find the right model that fits all your requirements. If towing is your only concern, then the base XL model would be a perfect choice since it has good towing capacity and hosts basic interior and safety features. If that’s not the case, we recommend you to buy the 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty Lariat trim which is a mid-range model in the line-up. This model has a price tag of $66,860 for a rear-wheel-drive configuration and it rises to $69,749 with a four-wheel-drive setup. It also packs some good interior features and hosts Ford’s Co-Pilot suite of safety systems. The Crew Cab style adds a good amount of comfort and space in the cabin.

Is buying the used Ford F-450 Super Duty Crew Cab a good idea?

Yes, buying a used 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty has a lot of benefits. The main factor is its price. While the price of a new F-450 may startle some of you, a used F-450 costs almost 60 percent lesser than the original sticker price. We recommend you to look for 2020, 2019, and 2018 model years in our used car listings as they belong to the latest generation and don’t differ much in features.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Ford offers only one powertrain option for the 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty. It gets a 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine that generates 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. The old six-speed automatic has been replaced by an efficient ten-speed automatic transmission and the power is routed to the rear wheels or all four wheels depending on the selected drivetrain. The top-end Limited trim is the only model that is available with a four-wheel-drive as standard. Getting an 8587-pound truck to move is not a joke and this engine does it without a fuss.

The power delivery is much better than expected and the transmission is quick and smooth.

The Ford F-450 is easily the most powerful pickup-truck in the above table with unmatchable power inputs. The GM brothers may have enough power to dominate over the RAM 3500HD but are low in the torque department. Also, the RAM 3500HD is still stuck with a six-speed automatic while its other rivals have better ten-speed automatic gearboxes.

2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty Crew Cab Acceleration and Braking Performance

The Ford F-450 Super Duty is purely engineered for towing some serious heft and not for street racing. Hence, acceleration in this truck is not athletic due to its heavy curb weight. Still, the powerful 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 is strong enough to haul the heavy body of the truck. Slam the pedal hard and you already feel like you are ruling the road due to its ride height.

In the acceleration test, the 2020 F-450 Super Duty reaches 60 mph from a standstill in 8 seconds and maxes out at 96 mph. The 16.1-second quarter-mile run is really a good figure considering the 8587 pounds of curb weight. Even when the truck is fully loaded, it doesn’t affect the acceleration factor much. It is almost impossible to break the F-450 when it gains pace. To take care of that, extra strong brakes are fitted to withstand the power and halt the truck quickly.

The RAM 3500HD outperforms all the rivals with its great performance figures in all the sections followed by the GM siblings with just a few seconds away. The Ford F-450, on the other hand, is way slower than the other competitors. The sole reason being its curb weight still, it gives a good ring with a top speed of 96 mph.

2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty Crew Cab Towing and Payload Capacities

The 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty has a conventional towing capacity of 24,200 pounds and a payload capacity of 6,210 pounds. With a gooseneck hitch setup, the towing capacity of the F-450 can go up to a humongous 35,000 pounds. The F-450 has the highest towing capacity in a crew cab configuration than any other competitors.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Since this is a heavy-duty truck, it requires a lot of juice in order to do the heavy hauling stuff. EPA has not rated the 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty due to its rare utilization in the market. However, according to a few sources, the F-450 is able to return 10.5 mpg in mixed conditions. Its 48-gallon fuel tank is big enough to offer a good range of mileage. In fact, this fuel tank is the largest among other crew cab rivals.

RAM continues to outperform all the competitors in this segment as well with its excellent fuel economy although housing the smallest fuel tank among its rivals. The GM brothers, as usual, stick to each other with low fuel-efficiency ratings. Although the fuel estimates of the Ford F-450 are not available, its large fuel tank should offer decent fuel economy.

Interior
9.0/10

If you're familiar with the F-series interior, then the 2020 Ford F-450 should not amaze you as it retains a fair bit of interior designs from its smaller siblings. On the lower trims, the dashboard is finished in soft-touch plastics which changes to faux wood trim on the higher trim levels. Features are highly reliant on the trim model you choose as there are six different trims on offer. The seats are comfortable and provide a good amount of under-thigh support which is helpful during long-distance travels.

On the lower trims, cloth or vinyl upholstery is standard but it can be upgraded to leather trim. On trims like King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited, leather seating is standard. The Crew Cab configuration has the best amount of head and legroom for tall passengers. The rear seats can be folded to give an additional storage volume of 52.1 cubic feet. Only one bed is available for the F-450 which is the longer 8-foot bed and stores about 78.5 cubic feet.

The Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra have the best-in-class head and legroom in this segment while the Ford F-450 and the RAM 3500HD offer similar levels of the room. Compared to the long bed storage volume of other competitors, the Ford F-450 offers the best volume in the segment followed by the GM siblings and the RAM 3500HD.

How’s the 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty Crew Cab infotainment system?

Just because it’s a heavy-duty truck, that doesn’t imply that there is no presence of tech. The base XL model gets a 4.2-inch infotainment display that features only Bluetooth connectivity while the other trim levels get access to a larger 8-inch touchscreen. Functions like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, SiriusXM, and 4G Wi-Fi are included. The King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited come with additional features like a wireless charging pad, HD radio, and navigation system. Speaking of music, the XL and XLT trim get a four-speaker stereo while a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system is standard on Lariat and other higher models. Some of the infotainment features in this Ford pickup truck are:

  • Navigation system (optional)
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • 5-speaker audio system
  • plug/power points
  • 4G Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • FordPass Connect (mobile application)

Exterior
8.0/10

Upfront, the design of the 2020 Ford F-450 is definitely big and bold due to its enormous grille. On either side, you get C-shaped quad halogen headlights and the overall setup looks attractive. The grille on the base XL trim is blacked out whereas the upper trim models get chrome accents on the grille. The Platinum and Limited trims replace the standard halogen headlamps with LED including fog lamps. The F-450 sits high on 19.5-inch polished alloy wheels.

The rear of the F-450 has the traditional pick-up look with a blue oval badge on the center. Two hooks are fitted on the lower front and rear fascia. Overall, the 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty looks like a big daddy of pick-up trucks. The Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks have the longest wheelbase but the Ford beats all three when it comes to the overall length of the truck.

Safety
7.0/10

Safety is another factor where Ford excels. Six airbags are installed in the 2020 Ford F-450 to protect the passengers from a severe injury. They include dual front, front side, and side curtain airbags. Due to its limited production, both NHTSA and IIHS haven’t crash-tested the 2020 Ford F-450. But Ford has taken enough measures to keep safety as their top priority. Ford’s CoPilot360 driver-assist features are only available on the top trims while the base trims get the basic standard features. Some of them include:

  • Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Rearview Camera
  • Lane-Keep Assist
  • Rear Parking Assistance
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance
  • Automatic High Beam Assist
  • Surround-view Camera
  • SOS Post Crash Alert System

2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty Crew Cab Vs the RAM 3500HD Crew Cab

The RAM 3500HD is available with a sticker price of $38,800 which is almost $15,000 less than the Ford F-450 Super Duty but is unmatchable to the latter’s powerful engine that makes 475 horsepower and 1050 pound-feet of torque. Since the RAM 3500HD has low curb weight in contrast with the other, it has the best acceleration performance in this segment and best fuel economy. But towing heavy loads is what you’re looking for then look no further than the Ford F-450 Super Duty

2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty Crew Cab Vs the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab

The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is the second go-to option if you do not wish for the Ford F-450 because it gives a tough competition in every section. Ford’s interior quality may be good but the Silverado is more spacious with better head and legroom. Final Verdict
8.4/10

The 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty is the ‘King of Pick-up trucks’. The credit goes to its powerful V8 diesel engine that allows incredible towing and payload capacities. The interior quality isn’t as luxurious as its rivals but it is a home for tech-savvy people. The heavy curb weight integrates its handling nicely and ensures a smooth ride. The 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty should be on your wishlist if you want to tow crazy amounts of loads. On the note, there are other affordable competitors but they really cannot sustain the abilities of the F-450.
