About 2020 Ford Fusion

3.8

Overall Rating

The 2020 Ford Fusion looks like it hasn’t aged at all.

The 2020 Ford Fusion looks like it hasn’t aged at all. Ford has managed to gracefully modernize the Fusion with minimal modifications and still make it worthy of 2020. The 2020 Ford Fusion is a clean mixture of practicality, fun, and comfort. Over the years, its competition has caught up with more features and performance.

We would recommend you to click right in the middle. With the SE trim, you get a much more robust and powerful 1.5L EcoBoost engine which makes it a bit more lively. It also gets an upgraded 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard with a six-speaker setup. For an additional $665 you will be able to have features like Adaptive cruise control and voice-activated navigation system.

All-wheel drive and safety features like forward collision mitigation system and blind-spot monitoring can be had for an incremental add on upgrade within $3000. Even after all these upgrades, the final price would not cross $2800.

The 2020 Ford Fusion looks like it hasn’t aged at all.

Overview

The 2020 Ford Fusion looks like it hasn’t aged at all. Ford has managed to gracefully modernize the Fusion with minimal modifications and still make it worthy of 2020. The 2020 Ford Fusion is a clean mixture of practicality, fun, and comfort. Over the years, its competition has caught up with more features and performance.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Ford Fusion is available for 2020 in four exclusive trims and two configurations. The SE and Titanium trims have an All Wheel Drive variant. Three varying engines with different characteristics power trims. The new 6-speed automatic transmission is standard in all.

The base S variant is powered by a rather uninspiring 2.5L naturally aspirated inline 4 pot which produces 173 horses and 174 pound-feet of torque. The SE and SEL trims are powered by a more robust 1.5L EcoBoost engine which pumps out 181 horses and 185-pound feet of torque. The most powerful is Titanium with a 2.0L turbocharged inline 4 engine producing 245 horses and 275 pound-feet of torque.

All the variants are adequately filled with features that mimic their value.

Which Fusion should you go for?

We would recommend you to click right in the middle. With the SE trim, you get a much more robust and powerful 1.5L EcoBoost engine which makes it a bit more lively. It also gets an upgraded 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard with a six-speaker setup. Engine and Performance
7.5/10

With the withdrawal of the brawny V6 which made the Fusion a sleeper, the only engine options available are the 2.5L in the base, 1.5L EcoBoost for the two mid trims and the 2.0L turbo for the Titanium trim. The base engine is barely surviving with 173 horses and 174-pound feet of torque.

What's under the hood of the 2020 Ford Fusion?

The engine is lethargic and does not provide the much-needed zeal. But the potent 6-speed automatic transmission helps in extracting the maximum power out of the puny engine. The peak power comes in at a steep 4500 rpm which means it needs to be revved hard for good acceleration. The easy knob controller for transmission is easy to use.

The torque maxes out at about the mid-rpm range which makes it perfect for cruising. Long rides are smooth without any fuss. It sounds the part too! Ford makes up for poor performance in excellent driving dynamics and body control.

Honda Accord tops the list with a topping 192 horses and 192 pound-feet of torque. The CVT transmission muffles the power. The chevy comes in second followed by the Altima.

How quickly can it pull off the line?

The Fusion is not ahead snapper but is tuned for everyday comfort. It makes sure the transmission is linear and you feel none of the jerks from the shifting of gears. The power does not induce breathtaking acceleration nor is it enough for sudden overtakes but enough to do the work efficiently without any hiccups.

How well does it take on the roads?

This is Fusion’s triumph car against its rivals. The steering is sharp and responds quickly and precisely to driver inputs. With minimal body roll thanks to anti-roll bars, it is one of the most fun-loving sedans out there. Corners are a breeze in this. The rigid body structure gives it exceptional stability at high speeds as well. The suspension is well-tuned for a comfortable extended trip. Bumps and vibrations are smoothly muffled by the dampers.

This amazing driving experience makes it one of the very few well-rounded dynamic sedans out there.

How's the braking?

The stopping power of Fusion is moderate. The car takes some time to halt as it is heavy. The braking is linear and doesn’t feel abrupt thus providing comfort all round. Stop and go traffic doesn’t feel fidgety. But even with the added mass, it manages to stop in a shorter distance than its competitors.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

Fuel economy is not the Fusion’s strong point even in the nonturbo 2.5L inline 4 pot. Surprisingly the higher trims with more powerful engines also return similar EPA rated estimates.

Interior
8.0/10

The interior is well laid out with a sensible amount of switches. It’s plain, simple and functional. It is a comfortable place to be in with comfortable seats. The rotary gear shifter takes a bit of time getting used to for newbies. The material quality is not up to mark on the base trim but as we go up, it improves. That said, it surely has improved from the last iteration with chrome laden gauges and tactile switches for better feedback. Ford should have put in a little more effort for the base trim as it feels out of place. Soft-touch materials and leather trims upgrade the dull interior in the upper trims.

How comfortable is the Fusion on the Inside?

The front seats are the most comfortable ones on the inside. It is supportive and well-bolstered to hold you firmly with comfort. There is ample headroom and legroom in the front. The tall and wide doors make entry and exit easy and comfortable. The wide front windshield and narrow A-pillars provide excellent forward visibility. The driver's seat is higher placed which also helps in outward visibility. The rear seats and cramped for a car this size. The sloping roofline gives it a shorter headroom which taller occupants might find uneasy. The seats come with cloth seats in light stone color. More customizations would require you to go up the ladder.

Looking at the statistics, the japs manage to outrun the Americans with a more comfortable and spacious interior. The better space management gives them the edge. Honda Accord provides the most interior space with the Altima following it.

What is the Infotainment system like?

The infotainment system on the base trim is barebone with a stereo AM/FM compatible CD player. It has the more basic version of the SYNC interface with voice-activation and a 4.2 inch LCD screen.

It feels a bit outdated and the optional SYNC 3 infotainment system with a larger screen would be a sensible upgrade for this trim.

Infotainment Features

  • AM/FM Stereo with CD Player
  • MP3 compatible
  • Four speakers
  • Bluetooth compatible

How much cargo can it take?

The cargo space is impressive with 16 cubic feet of space to play around. The 60/40 rear split seats fold to give you a lot of cargo space when needed. As this is not a hybrid like its brothers, it doesn’t eat up any space in the trunk and it is a blessing in a world when hybrids are taking over!

Exterior
7.0/10

Ford has managed to age the fusion well. Over the years not much has changed but the subtle changes do keep it in the grid. The design is sleek and simple. The now-standard LED taillights and halogen headlamps makes its presence felt. The 16- inch steel wheels do look a bit bland on the car. Nevertheless, higher trims have more attractive wheels available.

How does the Ford Fusion look on the road?

Ford Fusion is a long car that takes it to the full-sized sedan category. The design is simple but has aged well over the years. Ford has offered eight attractive color options to mask its age. The slanting roofline and Aston martin-like front grille makes it stand out from the crowd. The five-bar grille introduced last year has been carried over.

Safety
9.1/10

A FORD PASS connect app allows us to use multiple features like start/stop, lock/unlock, vehicle location and even fuel level. Ford has been interactive with providing reward points for using the application in your Fusion. These points can be used for discounts on vehicle servicing at any Ford Dealership. Well played Ford!

Competition
6.0/10

Honda Accord

The Japanese are neck-deep in here with more cargo space, a spacious interior, a punchier engine with smooth power delivery and great handling. It manages to surpass the Ford in all aspects except for the handling where it ties in with the Jap. But most importantly the Accord is high of features when the similarly priced Ford Fusion is dry and stripped of features of interest. So Jap is the clear winner here.

Nissan Altima

Ford is a poor car in terms of feature lists. But the feature list on the Altima makes the Fusion a winner! It has a very scarce and uninspiring list of features. The vehicle has poor outward visibility as well due to thick A-pillars. The driving is soulless and steering is very slow in response. Apart from the slight power gain than the Ford, there isn’t any pitching point for the Altima. The Fusion would be a sensible choice here.

Chevrolet Malibu

Malibu is the cheapest of the lot. It is cheaper than the Ford Fusion which raises eyebrows. But the Malibu is a lackluster car with poor acceleration. The interior is dated and the base engine is boring. Ford Fusion is a better performer both in terms of performance and features. Ford Malibu is surely not our choice of car here.

Final Verdict

The Ford Fusion is a practical, spacious and very nimble car. The seating is comfortable and we dare say one of the best among the lot. The powertrain is potent but the engine attached to it doesn’t impress at all. The 2.5L pot is just not enough to push the sedan when needed. When we compare it with the competition, it fails miserably. We would choose the much more compelling Honda Accord over the base Fusion anyday. But if you can shell out some extra bucks then Ford has some bone tickling higher trims in store.
