About 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3.9

Overall Rating

Grand Cherokee is a well-respected name in the automotive world. Since its debut in 1992, the SUV had fought off legends such as GMC Yukon and Ford Bronco to earn that status.

The can-do anything, go-anywhere attitude is what the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee seems to be full of. This year, the available diesel engine is discontinued while some features are shuffled between trims. The 2020 Grand Cherokee is available in 11 trims and its price ranges between $32,150 and $55,495. A 293-hp 3.6L V6 is the standard engine in the Grand Cherokee while a 360-hp 5.7L V8 is optional.

When properly equipped, the Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7,200 pounds, which is the best in its class. Inside, the SUV amazes with its spacious cabin and luxury touches, though its practicality factor is on the lower side. Most of the safety features are optional, which is not a good sign. It competes against other 5-seater midsize SUVs like the Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Chevy Blazer.

According to us, Limited is a great choice. It offers plenty of kits for its sub $40K price tag. This trim gets some luxury touches like leather seating, heated front seats, and steering wheel, sunroof, a power liftgate, and many more. This trim can also be equipped with the optional V8 engine.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review

Pros

  • Abundance of technology and luxury features
  • Majestic off-road capability with V8 engine
  • Impressive towing capacity
  • Spacious cabin

Cons

  • Ride quality might feel firm at times
  • Most safety features are optional

Grand Cherokee is a well-respected name in the automotive world. Since its debut in 1992, the SUV had fought off legends such as GMC Yukon and Ford Bronco to earn that status.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

Jeep is known to be generous when it comes to standard features- Carbuzz

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is sold in 11 trims which makes it a tad bit confusing when choosing which one to buy. The base Laredo trim is priced at $32,150 while the top-end Summit trim has an MSRP of $55,495. These prices exclude the $1,495 destination charge. All trims except the North Edition and Trailhawk models come standard with an RWD drivetrain while the 4WD system is optional.

All the trims use the same 3.6L V6. So, what makes them different are the features onboard. The Laredo trim can now be equipped with the Jeep Active Safety Group as it lacks enough standard safety features. HID headlamps and LED fog lamps bundled under the Premium Lighting Group are now available on the Laredo, Trailhawk, and Limited trims.

Buying Advice

According to us, Limited is a great choice. It offers plenty of kits for its sub $40K price tag. This trim gets some luxury touches like leather seating, heated front seats, and steering wheel, sunroof, a power liftgate, and many more. This trim can also be equipped with the optional V8 engine.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Owners who end up with a middle-grade Grand Cherokee are likely to be happy with its driving dynamics- Autoblog

Jeep seems to have felt no need to refresh the standard engine of Grand Cherokee, and rightly so. Its 3.6L V6 is capable of thrusting 293 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Upgrade to the optional 5.7L V8 if you want a better towing capacity of 7,200 pounds. This engine puts out 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. of torque. Both RWD and 4WD configurations are available.

The suspension is tuned optimally for comfort hence you are in the lap of luxury even in the mud and wilderness. But at no point does it feel too cushy or wallowed as a result it manages to stay plated even at high speeds. The steering is firm which affects the handling. But take it off the tarmac and into the land where no car-based vehicle dares it comes to life and performs beautifully.

Although its base engine is powerful, its acceleration feels underwhelming due to its hefty curb weight. It takes 7.6 seconds to reach the 60 MPH mark on the dash while the quarter-mile run is covered in 15.9 seconds. The optional V8 offers gratifying power and it takes 6.5 seconds for the same test. As for the brakes, they are sturdy and responsive. It decelerates from 60 MPH in 125 feet.

The Ford Edge's performance is really worth praising all thanks to its low curb weight. The Chevy Blazer and the Hyundai Santa Fe give a tight competition to each other in both performance tests. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee rests at the last spot but ranks first in terms of towing capacity and raw power outputs.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

With a high curb weight and two old-school engines, the Grand Cherokee never delivered stellar gas mileage figures- Carbuzz

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a perfect example of a gas-guzzler SUV. Although it comes with fuel-saving technologies like an engine start-stop feature, its fuel economy is not good. It returns 19 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG combined. Choosing a 4WD system dips economy by 1 MPG.

The optional V8 engine further decreases the fuel economy to 14 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on the highway, and 17 MPG combined. These ratings are not healthy for the class. The Grand Cherokee is fitted to a large 24.6-gallon fuel tank that offers a driving range between 418 and 517 miles, depending on the engine configuration.

The Chevy Blazer has the best fuel estimates in this competition while the Ford Edge is more efficient than the Blazer, considering it makes more power. The Hyundai Santa Fe's fueled economy is less than these two rivals but still, it is better than the Grand Cherokee.

Interior
8.0/10

Build quality is top-notch in the Grand Cherokee- Edmunds

The interior of the Jeep Grand Cherokee changes depending on the trim you go with. As you move up the trim ladder, the SUV becomes plusher, and 'Grand'. The use of leather can be found in the lower variants too but only where it matters and other than that use of hard plastic persists. So, it can be luxurious and rugged, depending on the money spent.

All five seats are comfortable and supportive in nature. There is plenty of room both in the front and the back. The cabin is also feature-rich as you are higher on the trim table. The driver's view is plentiful, but the thick A-pillars sometimes obstruct the view while turning. The cabin is generally quiet with the exception of engine noise, although, it sounds good. Tire noise is minimal.

Cargo Capacity (cu-ft.)

The Grand Cherokee’s cargo space may not be class-leading but it is plentiful. A 36.3 cubic feet space with a power liftgate makes it a sensible choice for any long trip. Plus there are rear foldable seats present as well which almost doubles the cargo space to 68.3 cu-ft. Jeep has one of the best infotainment systems, called Uconnect. It is easy to use and the touch-screen is snappy.

The base variant gets a 7-inch touchscreen which is not enough. Jeep offers an 8.4-inch touchscreen that gets the job done. Smartphone connectivity features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, etc. are standard. A 6-speaker stereo is standard but audiophiles can choose a 19-speaker setup tuned by Harman Kardon. It definitely feels like a home theatre. Some other interior features are:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power tailgate
  • Cloth, leatherette & leather seats
  • Heated front & rear seats
  • Ventilated front seats
  • 7/8.4-inch touchscreen w/ smartphone integration
  • 6/9 stereo speakers
  • Rear-seat entertainment system

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV has a familiar look that has worn well- Kelly Blue Book

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is big and bold. It has a character like no other which makes it one in a crowd. Unlike other SUVs, it looks aggressive and merciless right from the front. This sporty look appeals to a specific kind of crowd that wants their vehicle to introduce them before they themselves have to.

The angular cuts, the low aggressive bumper, and the iconic seven-slot front grille mark the identity of any Jeep. The U-shaped wheel arches and attractive wheels give a stylish look when viewed from the side. The wheels range from 17 to 20 inches. It has a high ground clearance so that any terrain won't stop you.

Comparatively, the Grand Cherokee weighs a lot more than its contenders. The Ford Edge's peppy performance is due to its low weight. The short wheelbase of the Hyundai Santa Fe assists in quick acceleration. The lengthy proportion of the Chevy Blazer can be a challenge while maneuvering at tight turns or parking lots. Some other exterior features are:

  • 17-20-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Black grille w/ chrome accents
  • Black window trim
  • LED DRLs & taillights
  • Fog lamps
  • Fully automatic projector-beam headlights

Safety
8.5/10

Unfortunately the only active safety feature that comes standard is blind-spot monitoring- CarAndDriver

NHTSA gave an overall safety rating of four stars for the RWD models while the 4WD models get a perfect 5-star rating for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. On the other hand, IIHS gave mixed ratings to this vehicle. It received Good ratings for some crash tests while the driver and passenger-side crash tests received Marginal and Poor ratings.

Standard driver-assist features are very limited in the Grand Cherokee which is one of its main drawbacks. Most of the advanced safety features are optional. The Grand Cherokee is further completed by a set of seven airbags as part of the passive safety features. Some of the highlighted safety features are:-

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Hands-free park assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2020 Chevrolet Blazer

Now in its sophomore, the Chevy Blazer is available with a wide choice of engines but only the Grand Cherokee offers a sonority of a V8. On the bright side, the Blazer's fuel economy is way better than the Grand Cherokee. The Blazer's cabin feels cheap but its infotainment system is user-friendly. However, it suffers from tight rear headroom and less cargo room.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2020 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is a good contender in terms of on-road performance as it offers peppy acceleration. Its MPG figures are also respectable. But, the Grand Cherokee is an obvious choice for off-road adventures and raw V8 power. The Edge is spacious on the inside and comes standard with Ford's Co-Pilot360 but it cannot match the upscale and technology offered by the Grand Cherokee

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe ranks much better than the Grand Cherokee due to its spacious interior, lots of tech features, and good fuel economy. Its interior quality is good like the Grand Cherokee while its cargo space exceeds the latter. When it comes to performance and driving dynamics, the Grand Cherokee is a clear winner while its towing capacity is also excellent.

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a legend in the American SUV market. It's a name, synonymous with performance and off-roading. It stays true to the 'Sport' in Sport Utility Vehicle. The Grand Cherokee has maintained the flair it was introduced with. It may have been modernized over the years, but it still remains true to its roots at its core.
