2020 Lexus RC F Review

Pros

  • Unadulterated Performance
  • Plush Ride Quality
  • Comfort Laden Seats
  • Aggressive Starting price against Rivals
  • Impeccable Build
  • Sonorous V8 Exhaust Note

Cons

  • Lack of Standard Tech Features
  • Compromises on Handling for comfort

For 2020, Lexus has also introduced a Hardcore, Track Focused version of the RC F called the RC F Track Edition and will be limited to only 500 units.

Overview

With most luxury car makers taking the turbo charging route for their luxury performance cars, few car makers are still persisting with the old school route. One of those Car makers following that approach today, is Lexus. For 2020, Lexus is sticking with this funda and marketing it as a USP for its Luxury Sports Coupe, the RC F. The 2020 Lexus RC F gets Lexus’ biggest V8 and slight changes in Engine tune and differentials, helps it muster more power and torque than the 2019 Model.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The RC F comes in just 1 trim but people wanting a track-focused RC F can get their hands on the RC F Track Edition. The RC F Track Edition is limited to just 500 units and has been priced at over $90,000. The Standard RC F comes bundled with Lexus Safety System+ as standard and gets a feature loaded interior.

What do we recommend?

While the 2020 Lexus RC F comes loaded to the brim with a list of creature comforts, customers can opt for multiple packages, depending on their choices and preferences.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The Engineers at Lexus wanted to extract the maximum out of the already existing 5.0L naturally aspirated motor. The 2020 Lexus RC F’s motor generates 5 more horses and 6 more lbs.-ft. Of torque courtesy of changes made to the intake and some programming in the motor as well. What is impressive though is the 7300rpm redline that makes you wanna step hard on the gas and hear the might V8 in all its glory.

Transmission duties are still performed by a Super Quick 8 Speed Unit that allows manual control via the paddles behind the steering shift. The gearshifts are seamless and gear changes are completed in a fraction of seconds. In the Automatic mode, the transmission's AI Shift Control features a G-sensor that detects when the RC F enters a curve and holds the lower gear throughout for optimal response when accelerating out.

*2019 Figures used for reference purposes only

Speaking of rivals, the Mercedes AMG C 63 manages to edge out the Lexus in terms of power figures and Torque. The Audi comes in next to the Lexus and is then followed by the M4.

How fast is the Lexus RC F?

Like the Motor, the Engineers at Lexus have updated the throttle response of the RC F and made small changes to the differential gear ratio. Courtesy of a smaller final gear ratio of 3.13:1 as compared to the 2.97:1, along with the weight reduction and motor updates for 2019, the RC F sees its performance figures improve by 0.2 seconds.

For people who would want to win their coffee table discussions on the top speed of the Lexus, well, the top speed of the RC F is somewhere close to 168MPH.

Speaking of the rivals, the Audi RS 5 manages to beat the other cars in the segment due to its standard AWD configuration as compared to the RWD configurations in the rest. The Merc is the fastest among all RWD coupes here and is followed by the BMW M4. The Lexus improves on its last year’s performance but still falls marginally short of its other rivals.

What about the braking performance?

The braking power is accompanied by 15.0-inch slotted front brake rotors and 13.6 inches in the rear clamped by massive six-piston Brembo calipers. In case of emergency braking, it comes to a complete halt in 105 feet which is an average distance. Its heavy curb weight significantly affects the agility of the car.

When we come to the competition, the Audi RS 5 leads the rest of the pack with its braking performance and is nearly matched by the Mercedes-AMG C 63. The M4 falls just shy of the Merc’s mark and the Lexus follows the Bimmer, closely behind.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

The 2020 RC F comes with a naturally aspirated motor and is one of the last of its kind. That has its own set of perks and quirks. One of the main quirks of a Naturally aspirated Motor comes in the form of their MPG figures and the RC F testifies this fact. The RC F offers the least overall MPG figures against its rivals and can best deliver a mileage of 24MPG on the highway.

The Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Motor of the Audi is both frugal and powerful. It’s the best performer here in terms of MPG figures and is closely followed by the C 63 AMG. The M$ manages to better the figures of the Lexus by a decent margin and takes the 3rd spot here.

Interior
7.0/10

The snug cockpit swaddles the driver with data and controls in what seems like the ideal techno-cutting-edge, Tokyo-through-night time design scheme. A high center console features a non-compulsory touchpad that is part of the $2840 navigation and an upgraded stereo package deal, and the units showcase a morphing LCD middle tachometer, similar to the LFA’s. Nearly the entirety within the car can be adjusted with the haptic infotainment manipulate pad, but there are also redundant buttons with knobs for extent and tuning, simply as within the modern-day IS.

Like those competitors, the RC F lavishes its to be had space on the front passengers. The seats themselves are stitched to remind us of human muscle tissues, and they’re formed and sized to carry large adults. Their supple, huge cushions can aid huge bodies and small ones, too, and the adjustable guidance makes certain all will find a true using position.

In terms of rivals, the BMW offers the most space for the front passengers and the rear as well. The Audi offers slightly lesser space than the Bimmer but edges out the Merc on the same front. The Lexus is the smallest in terms of dimensions on the inside but clever use of space has ensured that passengers aren’t left wanting a bit more space.

Creature comforts on offer?

Lexus is offering a lot on the inside of the RC F, to cater to the needs of its passengers. These features, not only add to the form of the RC F but also make the cabin, a bit more practical like the other Lexus'.

  • Multipower Adjustable Front Seats
  • 12V Front power outlet
  • Lever actuated Rear Seat Access
  • Sport Steering with Paddle Shifters
  • High Back Sport Seats
  • Dual Zone Climate Control with SMOG Sensor
  • Aluminum Pedals
  • Interior Day/Night Electrochromic Rearview Mirror
  • Adaptive Cruise Control

How good is the infotainment system?

Despite being touted as a sportscar by its maker, the RC F features an intuitive infotainment system equipped with all the major bells and whistles. The system is very responsive to touches and sunlight legibility is quite decent as well.

  • LCD Instrument Cluster with MID
  • Amazon Alexa Connectivity with Apple Car Play, Android Auto
  • SiriusXM Satellite/HD Radio with Homelink
  • Scout GPS with Subscription-Free Traffic and Weather
  • Steering Wheel mounted Audio, Cruise, MID and Voice controls
  • Lexus Enform App Suite 2.0
  • 4G LTE with Wi-Fi support

How good is the cargo capacity?

With 10.1 cubic feet of cargo space on offer, the 2020 RC F is not only a sports car but a practical one as well. Taking a note from the Legendary LFA, Lexus has incorporated plenty of cubby holes and storage spaces inside the RC F’s cabin, in order to add to the practicality quotient.

Speaking of Rivals, most of them are on the same page as the Lexus as far as Cargo capacities are concerned. The BMW edges out most of its rivals by a very small margin while the Merc comes the closest to it.

Exterior
7.0/10

Lexus has started getting recognition for its striking design language. The 2020 RC F builds on this and adds more style to the same. Lexus improves the RC coupe’s look with slits, vents, and mesh grille. The final product is an interesting design that may be difficult to understand for some people. Lexus mixed the front clip of the GS sedan, the middle phase of the antique IS C convertible, and the rear stop of the IS sedan hence creating a design that’s striking to look at.

Talking about weights, Lexus has shaved off nearly 55 pounds of the 2019 RC F and introduced a lighter version of the same. This has been made possible by the use of a lighter intake manifold, smaller ac compressor, extensive use of aluminum instead of steel, composite rear bumper support and hollow axles.

The 2020 RC F stretches 185 inches in length and 72 inches in width. All the other dimensions are similar to the rivals and Lexus has got the highest ground clearance. The wheelbase is shorter at 107 inches and is a bit smaller than the competitors. Rivals have similar dimensions in length and breadth while the Mercedes is the heaviest among all.

What are the most noteworthy features on the outside?

Lexus is bundling plenty of features on the outside of the RC F. There are plenty of features on the outside but the standout features include the following

  • Triple Beam LED Headlights with LED DRL’s
  • Electrochromic Door Mirrors
  • LED Taillights
  • Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers
  • Windshield Wiper De-Icer
  • Heated and Powered Exterior RVM with Turn Indicators
  • Rear Spoiler and Quad Exhausts
  • Universal Garage Door Opener
  • Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Tires
  • Illuminated Door Handles
  • Cooling Ducts in the front bumper

Safety
9.9/10

With Safety becoming a top priority for a lot of Car Buyers around the world, Lexus has started to ramp up the number of safety features on offer on their Cars. From 2020 onwards, all Lexus’ will come standard with the Safety System+ Package across the range. The RC F also comes with a rigid body structure that has multiple crumple zones to absorb impacts in case of an unwanted accident. Other than that, the RC F gets a whole host of safety features that includes the following

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Auto Leveling High/Low Beams
  • 8 Airbags that include driver’s and front passenger’s advanced airbag systems, driver’s and front passenger’s knee airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags and front seat-mounted side airbags
  • Backup camera with Dynamic Guidelines
  • Lexus Enform Safety Connect
  • Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management with Sport Mode

Competition
9.0/10

Lexus RC F vs. BMW M4 Coupe

Get inside of the mighty M4 and set together for explosive acceleration and razor-sharp handling. It oversteers on corners and always longing for the wheel spin. It is a legendary car with 425 hp twin-turbo inline-six which comes mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Its rear-wheel-drive setup burns up the rubber fast and smokes instantly.

However, the more conventional and traditional Lexus will depreciate way better than the Bimmer and will fetch a better resale value as well. Modern-day Bimmers tend to be money pits while the Lexus will continue to remain a dependable workhorse for many more years to come.

Lexus RC F vs. Audi RS 5

The Audi RS 5 comes in as one the best all rounders of the segment. It offers good power and torque, comes loaded with features and tech and is practical as well. It also has a well-built cabin and employs the use of premium quality materials. The Lexus may not be as frugal as the Audi and may not be as rich in features as well but it does everything else that the Audi does at a far lower starting price. Also, if you are a true Motorhead, you will enjoy the hustle and bustle of the naturally aspirated V8 motor of the Lexus more than the Turbocharged unit in the Audi.

Lexus RC F vs. Mercedes-Benz AMG C63

AMG C63 is the compact V8 own family supercar for all purposes. Not just in power outputs, but a full four body styles. The AMG twins are the sharpest, strongest, most interesting engine in its class with an absurdly pleasant agile chassis, fun drive and now, it is tech laden even in the lowest trim. AMG is an icon for performance and chassis is much agile than Lexus. Steering input is also commendable. The brash styling of RC F is less appealing against the Merc. But despite all this, a modern-day Lexus will fetch you a far better value than any modern German, owing to its no-nonsense build and a traditional approach overall.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Lexus RC F is the last of its kind in the luxury car space by being the only car in the segment to come with a naturally aspirated motor. While all of its rivals have taken the turbocharged route, the Lexus is still going forward with the Naturally aspirated motor. Other than producing a great exhaust note, the RC F feels a bit more direct in driving feel. Adds to that, the precision of Japanese Engineering on the exterior and on the inside and what you have on your hands is a comfortable sports cruiser that can eat up miles while making your ride enjoyable. You sure don’t get the brand value of a Mercedes or a BMW with the Lexus but with Lexus having made Legends like the LFA, you might not mind the Lexus badging as well.
