2020 Mclaren 600LT Review

Pros

  • Ballistic power delivery
  • Excellent feedback through the steering wheel
  • Lightning-fast shifts from the 7-speed Dual-clutch transmission
  • Exhilarating exhaust note

Cons

  • Laggy infotainment
  • Too stiff a ride for everyday use

The 570S was already a surreal supercar which could have done with a bit more power and better handling and that's exactly what McLaren did with the new 600LT.

Overview

The name Mclaren is nothing short of a true petrol head’s wet dream and that is mostly down to the fact that most cars conceptualized with the Mclaren name tag have redefined the very benchmark of a high-performance vehicle, be it the Mclaren F1 from back in the day which continues to hold the world land speed record for a naturally aspirated production vehicle, 30 years after its inception, which is an extraordinary feat. The P1 is another Mclaren masterpieces that became the benchmark of what hybrid power plants are actually capable of and it showed the world that the future of EV propulsion doesn't have to be slow or boring.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2020 McLaren 600 LT Spider is priced at $256,500 which is over $40K more than its predecessor but for your 40 grand you are treated with a bump in power and lots of space-age weight saving kit which make the 600LT Spider a faster, sharper and a more agile track tool than.

The 7-speed Seamless Shift Gearbox (SSG) as McLaren likes to call it is truly seamless in the way it makes use of the LT’s 600 horsepower. The gearbox which has been lifted off the 570s has been given a throw TLC to cope with the bump in power. The engine is ballistic in the way it manages to deliver all that power through its rear wheels courtesy the grippy Pirelli P Zero tires and the big rear wing that manages to give it more downforce than most of its arch-rivals and hence that sense of sticking to the tarmac which is unmatched in this side of supercar territory.

Acceleration

At 2.9 seconds, the 600 LT now sits at the very top of the supercar drag race table alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. But if that's not enough street cred for you then we are happy to inform our reads that the 600 LT spider is capable of sprinting to 125 mph in a mere 8.2 seconds which is getting seriously close to hypercar territory.

Braking

The huge 6 piston carbon-ceramic rotors, which are made in-house by McLaren are undeniably one of the best in the business, coupled with the super sticky Pirelli P Zero brings this agile beast to a halt in no time. Another clever bit of tech that makes its way into the 600 LT’s options list is the brake booster feature borrowed from the Senna Hypercar which primes the breaks in advance by building pressure in the vehicles hydraulic brake cylinder which allows the 600 LT Spider to come to a complete halt from a 125 miles an hour in a mind-numbing 121 meters which is just 5 meters more than the P1 Hypercar.

Fuel Economy
3.5/10

Enquiring about a supercar’s fuel economy should be made a criminal offense. But for those who are all about their numbers, it is safe to say that the 600 LT is no Prius and it manages to squeeze out a mere 20 mpg combined. The 600 LT, however, is in the same ballpark as most of its competitors which makes it a valuable proposition (in an imaginary world full of supercars and hypercars) .

Interior
9.5/10

The LT 600 spider has taken the weight saving game up a notch which has made its way even to the interiors of the vehicle. For starters, the cabin has been stripped of all kinds of leather upholstery and Alcantara has been brought in to take its place.

The seats have also received a thorough weight-saving treatment to go with the vehicle's weight-saving theme. The new seats are made entirely out of Carbon Fiber which results in massive amounts of weight reduction without compromising on comfort and functionality.

The seats are however clearly designed with the 600 LT Spider’s aggressive performance in mind hence the seat itself isn't the most comfortable on long journeys but they do offer a tremendous amount of support and are highly capable of keeping the driver and passenger in place even during high spirited driving.

The seats might be a right match to McLaren’s ballistic performance but getting yourself into the cabin and on to those seats is definitely a hustle in itself which is mostly due to the high strength carbon tub which intrudes so much into the cabin that as one opens the door they are greeted by a massive carbon fiber door sill which is a couple of inches in height and width, which forces its occupants to leap into the cabin instead of just stepping in, well its just one of those quirks that makes a supercar what it truly is.

Infotainment System

The seven-inch McLaren IRIS smartphone-style touchscreen interface might look space-age just like the rest of the vehicle but its quite the opposite in real life. The system is slow and laggy unlike the rest of the vehicle and the interface itself isn't the most intuitive and one might find themselves struggling to enter directions or addresses onto the satnav for the same reason. Good thing that this isn't a GT car that needs to have an easy to use Satnav in order to smoothly execute a cross-continental voyage on the tarmac. McLaren has however packed the IRIS infotainment with plenty of features such as:

  • Satellite navigation
  • Bluetooth telephone connection and audio streaming
  • Wi-Fi tethering
  • Voice activation
  • Integrated apps
  • DAB or SIRIUS radio
  • USB connectivity and AUX input
  • McLaren 4-speaker audio system McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT)

Cargo Capacity

The Mid-engine layout of the 600 LT Spider only allows for a ‘frunk’ which is the front-mounted trunk that is surprisingly roomy for what it is and is capable of accommodating a duffle bag or two with ease.

The seatback is storage can also be utilized in various ways, as its equipped with clever touches such as a dedicate shelf to hold small bags and a coat hook for added functionality.

All in all the cabin is sufficient to pack enough luggage for a weekend getaway.

Exterior
9.0/10

McLaren takes first and foremost priority delivering a purpose-built exterior that is designed with such accuracy and precision that it seems like the golden ratios have been implemented into designing the exteriors of the vehicle, making it extremely pleasing to the eye. The low stance and the wide body design gives it more presence than its predecessor. And other tricks that the McLaren 600 LT Spider has borrowed from the supercar book of cool are the doors that go up instead of sideways and a great big fixed-wing which is lavishly furnished with tonnes of carbon fiber.

The massive rear wing, however, is not just an aesthetic add on. The carbon wing is placed their to get rid of all the active aero trickery that was found onboard the 600 LT’s predecessor in a bid to save weight along with adding more downforce.

Talking of weight saving, the 600 LT Spider was put under a serious diet for performance gains over its predecessor. For starters, we have a carbon fiber rear wing, followed by lighter rims and breaks and even a lighter exhaust setup than the 570S. All of this weight saving space-age technology results in a car which is 100 kilograms down on weight form its predecessor and in the world of supercars, less weight equals more speed.

Safety
9.0/10

With this kind of mind-numbing performance on tap, McLaren has packed the 600 LT Spider with a whole host of safety features and equipment to make it as safe as possible.

The LT 600 Spider has not been tested by any safety regulatory authority such as Euro NCAP or NHTSA and it probably never will be due to its high cost of production and low production volumes.

Safety Features

  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Dynamic Electronic Stability Control (DESC)
  • Traction Control (TC)
  • Hill hold assist Cruise control Electronic parking brake
  • Volumetric alarm upgrade (including interior storage compartments)

Just like the 600 LT Spider, teh Evo Spider is also all new for 2020 and it is also the McLaren’s arch rival as both these vehicles proimise to offer similar kind of performance in a similar setup but they do differ in the way they deliver this performance. The Huraccan Evo is an all wheel drive monster which is the newest benchmark in agility but the McLaren manages to hold its ground by offering raw and unadultrated feedback and response courtesy its direct chassis and steering feel which is better than the Lamborghini.

McLaren 600 LT Spider vs Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet

The Porsche is any purists wet dream with the manic flat 6 powerplant which has been tuned to produce even more power in its Turbo S guise coupled with all wheel steering and direct handling it might just be better around twisties but it is no match for the McLaren in terms of outright acceleration and it fails to make its driver feel like it wants to kill you.

Final Verdict

This entry-level 600 LT Spider is just McLaren’s way of showing the world how an already perfect machine can be remastered. The 600 LT Spider is everything that the world said the 570 s Spider was and could have been. The addition of power and loosing the 100 kilos has made it a sharper vehicle all in all and it undeniably is a supercar bargain for all those who have 250 Grand to spare on a dream machine.
