About 2020 Nissan Kicks

3.5

Overall Rating

The 2020 Nissan Kicks presents more than practical subcompact crossover with an affordable price tag. Don’t be fooled by the tiny dimension of it, it is much more. With style everywhere.

The 2020 Nissan Kicks is essentially a carryforward model which brings around only minute changes for this model year. Well justified enough, as the 2021 Nissan Kicks gets a fair share of updates including revamped exterior and interiors, newly available options, and reworked infotainment system. Coming back to the 2020 Nissan Kicks, the SUV gets Nissan's SafetyShield 360 as standard, while the previously standard roof rails have been made optional.

Coming to the prices, the 2020 Nissan Kicks is available in a total of 3 variants - S, SV, and SR. The prices of the 2020 Nissan Kicks start from $18,870 for the base S trim and ranges up to $21,120 for the top-of-the-line SR trim. This is excluding the $1150 destination fee that the Kicks invite. For leasing, consider the 2020 Nissan Kicks to cost you around $261 per month with $2249 due at signing.

Skip the base for a brighter mid-level SV model which for $20,500 offers a better kit for the price. The most intriguing and desirable ones are Apple Carplay, Android Auto, enhanced instrument cluster, bigger 17-inch wheels, and more driver-assistance technology.

2020 Nissan Kicks Review

Pros

  • Affordable Pricing
  • Exceptional Fuel-Economy
  • Large Cargo Capacity

Cons

  • Unperceptive acceleration
  • No all-wheel drive

The 2020 Nissan Kicks presents more than practical subcompact crossover with an affordable price tag. Don’t be fooled by the tiny dimension of it, it is much more. With style everywhere.

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

Nissan Kicks offers three trims for the 2020 model year: S, SV, and SR with many options scattered between. The base S starts at $18,870 and rides atop 16-inch wheels beholding active safety features, adequate connectivity options for a 7.0-inch touchscreen. Also, cloth upholstery comes standard with hard plastic interiors.

Moving up the ladder adds 17-inch wheels, Apple Carplay, and Android Auto with automatic climate control and remote-start feature. The 2020 Kicks SV costs $20,500 (MSRP).

Further, the table topper Kicks SR flaunts a leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lights, and a surround-view camera. No all-wheel drive is available and a single powertrain option is available across the lineup. One available package is the SR Premium package with Bose audio system, premium seats with heated front seats, and a security system. Though it will cost you an additional $1000.

Buying Advice

Skip the base for a brighter mid-level SV model which for $20,500 offers better content. The most intriguing and desirable ones are Apple Carplay, Android Auto, enhanced instrument cluster, bigger 17-inch wheels, and more driver-assistance technology.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

"The Kicks does have a couple of things going for it in this category. It's fun to drive on a twisty road. The suspension is responsive and keeps the car balanced. We also like how the Kicks' transmission shifts smoothly and delivers adequate response in routine driving." - Edmunds

Nissan has surely considered the monotonous urban scenarios while equipping the 2020 kicks with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine to mill out 122 hp and 114 lb-ft torque. Nissan kicks is adequately powered but misses out on the occasional driving thrill to set the mood on a high.

The shifting duties are fulfilled by the standard continuously variable transmission, also referred to as Xtronic transmission by the automaker. The transmission is quiet, unlike other CVT’s and drives the front wheel. No all-wheel-drive is offered, though you may not miss this part if you ain’t a frequent all-weather road runner and it will also help you save on fuel.

However, under the hood, the 2020 Kicks provide a sustainable solution but some extra power may be needed for making it a thriving car in the segment. You've gotta push the pedal tight to get the engine revving across the passes or up-hill. The others in the lineup also offer similar power figures, except for the Toyota C-HR which with its 2.0L engine belts out the class-leading 144 hp.

The Nissan Kicks powertrain lacks vigor. Definitely, the engine is not high-revving but being disciplined is a positive trait, isn’t it? The 1.6-liter mill is quiet, efficient, and can help propel the 2020 Kicks from 0 to 60 mph in under ten seconds. The time isn’t exceptional but adequate for city use.

The transmission makes for a perfect partner for city drives and relaxed highway runs. The timely-shifts and quiet character suffice the purpose. The engine is potent to perform if you wish to push the limits but that limit is short reached.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

Showing phenomenal fuel-economy ratings, Nissan Kicks behaves more like an economy car than an SUV. The front-wheel-drive and the CVT help attain such milestones. The 1.6L workhorse sips through the fuel in the city as well as on the highway and proves to be super-efficient.

The 2020 Nissan Kicks returns a city/highway/combined mpg of 31/36/33 respectively. Though the smaller fuel tank of 10.8 liters limits the cruising range, still the exceptional efficiency manages 335/389 miles through city and highway respectively.

The Nissan Kicks can be called the most fuel-efficient car of this segment as all competitors rate lower, mostly.  The Ford Ecosport's fuel economy and Toyota C-HR's mpg figures trail behind being the two heavy-weight contenders of the lot. The Hyundai Venue with its manual transmission lags behind in terms of outright efficiency.

Interior
7.0/10

"Interior styling is less trendy than the exterior design of the Kicks, but it is well-built, looks grown-up, and has a user-friendly interior." - Car and Driver

The 2020 Nissan Kicks's interior reflects on its low-budget character. The interior material used is not exciting by any means and falls flat. The hard plastics and cheap carpeting reconfirm that 2020 Nissan Kicks is built to a budget. However, the hatch-looking Kicks is more than what the facts confirm.

The interior comfort closes down on any doubts with ample room both in front and rear. With excellent head and shoulder room, Kicks allows for all-adult seating both in front and rear. However, seating three adults at the back would be more optimistic.

Getting in or out is easy thanks to large door openings. A high seat bottom for both front and rear passengers further equates to easy entry and exit. The seats sit high than the cars of yesteryear and adjust to recline, tilt and can be moved fore-aft for the most comfort. The outward visibility remains excellent, thanks to a large windshield upfront. The rear visibility is a bit more challenging due to the thick C-pillar.

Behind the rear-seats, Nissan Kicks offers 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space which is the best in this class. The opening is squared out and the loading lip is set low which makes the loading and unloading of cargo fairly easy. The 60/40-folding seats expand the space to 53.1 cubes, useful for loading tall or bulky items. Though the rear seats do not fold completely flat.

Lately, technology for entertainment and convenience to keep the drive engaging has become unavoidable. The 2020 Nissan Kicks has everything in-store to keep the journey fulfilled. Nissan Connect may not be among the most appealing infotainment system on the market today, but it is intuitive and user-friendly. A 7.0-inch touchscreen comes standard on all models. The display is big and crisp and falls in the eye-line of the driver.

Standard on all models is a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and front/rear USB ports. Available technology upgrades will add a Wi-fi hotspot, Google and Apple mirroring technology and a premium audio system. Except for the base, Kicks features Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatibility which also comes in handy for your navigation needs.

"What’s on the outside of the 2020 Kicks is more impressive than the inside. The Kicks follows sneakers, which may or may not be a coincidence" - TheCarConnection

From the outside, the 2020 Nissan Kicks presents a stylish first impression and sustains the appeal. The unique grille, available LED headlights and sloping roofline presents an expressive sense of style and substance. Further complementing the bold design are the wheel arch fenders and the rising character line on the bodysides.

In addition, dark lower body trim magnifies the height, highlighting the high ground clearance. The 2020 Kicks comes in a spectrum of seven body colors along with optional two-tone paint schemes. So there is something to be happy about, is it?

The Long Wheelbase of the Kicks helps it gain an advantage over the competition in terms of the generous Cargo Space and Interior Space on offer. In terms of the exterior looks and design, we must say that the designers at Nissan have done a commendable job of making the Kicks look both stylish and compact.

Nissan Kicks is equipped with some contrasting colors that add a lot of sport to its look. The tail of this car also adds to the character and style of a compact SUV. Some of the other Exterior features include:

  • Auto On/Off LED Headlamps with LED Accents
  • LED Fog Lamps
  • Contrasting Roof Color Scheme
  • 17" Aluminum Alloy wheels
  • Body-Colored Heated ORVM
  • Roof Rails on all variants
  • Front Parking Sensors
  • External Front and Rear Windshield Wipers

Safety
9.3/10

For 2020, Nissan has made Nissan Safety Shield 360 standard across all trims for better safety, security, and driver convenience. It packs myriad technologies like Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Warning to name a few. In addition, Rear Door Alert is now standard on Kicks SV and SR grades, while Kicks SR includes standard Intelligent Around View Monitor.

The 2020 Nissan Kicks gets a mixed scorecard with quite many highs than lows. The NHTSA rated the 2020 Kicks with four stars, while Kicks sailed through the IIHS crash tests. Being the Top Safety Pick, SR managed a good crash-test score. The Kicks S and SV models due to headlights misses out to qualify for the same.

Key Safety Features of the 2020 Nissan Kicks include:

  • Airbags
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • LATCH System
  • Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System
  • Side door guard beams
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Front Seat Belts Pre tensioners with Load Limiters
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control

Competition
8.0/10

Nissan Kicks Vs Ford Ecosport

The 2020 Nissan Kicks stacks up against the Ford Ecosport. In terms of comfort, passengers in the backseat will prefer Ford Ecosport for better legroom but in front, it's a different story altogether.

For some, if bigger is better, Nissan Kicks wins here with a slightly longer dimension. Also, Kicks turn out to be a better financial choice but in terms of power, it is lesser than Ford.

Nissan Kicks Vs Hyundai Venue

The 2020 Hyundai Venue seems to be an identical twin of the 2020 Nissan Kicks in terms of utility and behavior. The two share a lot of similarities including power and performance. But Nissan Kicks surpasses the 2020 Venue with better cargo capacity, roomier interiors, and unmatchable fuel economy.

However, Kicks lack some desirable features which allow Hyundai to score better. Though both cars are equally potent, it will be a difficult choice. P.S.- Hyundai offers an unmatchable warranty.

Nissan Kicks Vs Toyota C-HR

The Toyota C-HR features a long list of standard features and above-average reliability ratings but still couldn’t make it to a good SUV list. The cramped interiors and drab styling along with lack of practicality are to be blamed.

The powerful engine of C-HR doesn’t result in any better acceleration and drones throughout. Additionally, the Nissan Kicks cost way less than the Toyota C-HR for everything better.

Final Verdict
5.2/10

The 2020 Nissan Kicks comes with slightest of changes and we were not disenchanted with what is on offer at such an affordable price. For youthful drivers or others on budget when things look black and white, Kicks brings expressive styling, plenty of room and technology in abundance. However, shoppers looking for neck-snapping acceleration or a spirited driving experience may have to look for other options.
