2020 Polestar Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid Review

Pros

  • Beautiful design
  • Impressive performance on offer
  • Good fuel efficiency and electric range

Cons

  • More expensive than all the other competitors
  • Poor rear-seat space
  • Huge waiting period
  • Mediocre trunk capacity

The 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid has been launched to reinvigorate the hybrid luxury coupe segment with a tinge of performance. This Swedish automotive marque has been in the limelight lately for the launch of the all-new 2020 Polestar 1, which is a performance-centric hybrid luxury coupe, coming with a vicious 2.0L twin-turbo inline-4 motor coupled with 3-electric motors and a 34 kWh battery pack, all of which put out an impressive 619 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.

Overview

2020 is a year that saw the arrival of many hybrid and fully electric models, and due to the rising fuel prices and lower emissions on offer from these hybrid and electric motors, many of these cars have been highly successful too. 2020 also marks the arrival of the Polestar brand to the United States, and the first car to see the light in the American market is the mighty 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid, which is a hybrid luxury coupe. With its unmatched interior quality and features along with a fire breathing hybrid motor that is tuned both for relaxed cruising as well as for outright grunt, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid sure will make the American car buyers go weak in the knees.

This all-new model from Polestar takes the performance and luxury game a notch further with the inclusion of a wide list of features that could even shame the best from Europe and Japan, and also due to the presence of one of the most powerful hybrid powertrains available in a production car today. A distinctive exterior design, as well as one of the highest electric motor range, further adds to the resume of this hybrid coupe.

However, with such an exorbitant price tag and a few quirks that are likely to be a deal-breaker to many, can the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid compete with the more established and inexpensive rivals like the Tesla Model S Performance, Lexus LS 500h Hybrid, and Porsche Taycan Turbo? Find out more in this in-depth review of the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is only available in a single trim and comes at a hefty price tag of $156,500. However, the car gets all the features that you could expect from a luxury coupe. The features like a 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, a head-up display, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated seats, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate control, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, and many more are present as standard in the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid. Along with these features, there is also an impressive list of many advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and semi-autonomous driving modes for a safe and secure traveling experience.

Though the car comes loaded with many standard features, there are also a few features like ventilated and massaging functionality for the seats missing from the list. Another thing to note is the lack of any of these missing features even as an option extra, which is a glaring omission.

Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Polestar is a relatively new brand, both in the United States as well as to the rest of the world, and hence the reliability of the brand is largely unknown. Going by the reputation of Volvo in the United States, which is average as reported by the RepairPal and JD Power for the year 2020, the Polestar is most likely to be quite similar too. However, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid hasn’t been reported by JD Power yet, and hence we are unable to present the reliability ratings of this brand new moniker.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

Even though the reliability is an unknown area for the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid due to the unavailability of JD Power and RepairPal report for the same, we are pretty sure that the score would be in line with the other luxury offerings of Volvo. Since the luxury hybrid cars never go hand in hand with reliability, as showcased by the other competitors from Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes, the same is also likely to happen with the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid too. Nevertheless, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid got zero recalls and user complaints according to the NHTSA, which is great to know.

If you loved the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid due to its impressive design and great performance on offer, and are planning to go forward with the decision of buying this luxury coupe, we would recommend you to look for deals from California, New York, and Florida, as these are the states which sell the most number of hybrid vehicles in the United States. However, do not expect much of a discount from any of these states since this is an all-new car with limited production. The best we could find was close to $500 off on a brand new 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid in California. You could also check out the states like New Hampshire, Delaware, and Oregon, since these states do not have any automotive sales tax, which would equate to a better deal. Even then, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid would most likely need to be ordered from the factory and wouldn’t be available to purchase off the dealership lot.

Another thing to keep in mind is the exorbitant cost of ownership these luxury cars would often end up with, mainly due to high insurance cost, maintenance cost, repair cost, and eye-watering depreciation. That is also the reason why you could easily spot these luxury cars gathering dust in service centers and car parking since the people couldn't afford to keep up with the exorbitant cost of ownership. The 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid would also be quite expensive to run for 5-years due to these factors. Expect anywhere between $180,000 to $190,000 to keep the car ticking in top-notch condition for the first 5-years. However, do keep in mind that this cost includes a lot of factors like financing cost, insurance cost, depreciation cost, and taxes & fees, which are all uber high in the initial years of ownership and would likely come down as the years go.

Polestar Warranty

To safeguard the buyers from the exorbitant cost of repairs that might pop in the initial years of ownership, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid comes with an impressive warranty package. It gets a limited and powertrain warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, which is quite good for the luxury hybrid coupe segment. Along with that, there is also a hybrid-component warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles and 24-hour roadside assistance, all of which do increase the confidence the owners have for this newly established brand.

Criteria

Period

Limited warranty

4 years or 50,000 miles

Powertrain warranty

4 years or 50,000 miles

Hybrid-component warranty

8 years or 100,000 miles

24-Hour Roadside Assistance

4 years

Even with impressive warranty coverage on offer with the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid, we were quite disappointed with the lack of any complimentary scheduled maintenance coverage. On the other hand, many of the competitors do offer 1-year complimentary maintenance, which would be a great boon for the owners.

Miles Per Dollar

The miles per dollar ratio tells about the miles that can be driven with a dollar. This is calculated based on the average number of miles that is driven by an American in a year, which is 15,000miles and is divided by the total cost incurred for the car, which includes factors like fuel cost, insurance cost, maintenance & repair cost, finance cost, and taxes & fees. Even though the miles per dollar ratio of the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is not known yet, we are pretty sure that the cost would be quite high due to the higher than average costs incurred for the upkeep of the car.

Buying Advice

Since there is only one trim that is available in the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid, which fortunately comes with most of the interior, exterior, and safety features as standard, that is the only option you have got. The car can also be had with different alloy wheels and a whole lot of exterior and interior colors, all of which look quite good. The cost is also on the lower side for these optional extras considering this is an expensive coupe. We especially liked the 21-inch Matt black diamond cut alloys that come as an option.

Is buying a used Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid a good idea?

The 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is a brand new offering from a brand that has just set its foot in the United States, and hence it is almost impossible to get a used Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid at this moment. However, if you find one, you could get an impressive deal due to the more than average depreciation that these luxury coupes are often catered to.

If you are interested in buying a pre-owned luxury coupe, do check out our used car section since we have a wide variety of cars from all over the United States. We also maintain a healthy list of certified pre-owned cars offering extra peace of mind.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is a car with pure wizardry when it comes to the powertrain. This is one of the most modern and technologically advanced powertrains we have ever laid our hands-on. The 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid gets 4-different motors to drive both the front and rear wheels. There is a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0L 4-cylinder gasoline direct injection motor along with an electric motor stuck onto the front axle, both of which together contribute a combined power output of 375 hp. These motors solely drive the front wheels.

There are also dual electric motors at the rear axle producing close to 114 hp and will propel the rear of the car. Combining all 4-motors, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid gives out an impressive 619 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. The power is put down by the AWD system, however, when the gasoline motor is only working the power is directed through the front wheels. With the electric motor alone, the car works in rear-wheel-drive mode. The handling and braking are also impeccable due to adjustable Ohlins dampers and a 4-wheel independent suspension setup. The braking is done by Akebono sourced hardware shedding the speed with minimal effort.

The 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is one of the most powerful hybrids on sale in the United States currently, and the closest hybrid competitor, the Lexus LS500h Hybrid, gets a much lower 354 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. However, the fully electric Tesla Model S Performance and Porsche Taycan Turbo puts out more impressive figures of 824 hp and 671 hp, respectively.

2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid Acceleration And Braking Performance

The multiple motors and a fast-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission makes sure that the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is unmatched in the world of hybrid luxury coupes when it comes to the speed and thrill on offer. Put your foot down from a standstill, and you will be surprised with the insane torque on offer from this car. The 738 lb-ft of torque helps you to catapult this luxury hybrid coupe with no lag. The low-end and mid-range performance is up there with the best of offerings from the segment. What makes this coupe a joy to use is the 8-speed automatic transmission, which offers smooth gearshifts when moving around the city streets. However, drive like a maniac, and the transmission is always ready to put the roads on fire with the lightning-quick shifts. The top-end performance is impeccable too, and never really gets coarse as you expect from a typical forced induction motor.

Having a great performance and handling doesn’t always mean that the car is going to be fun. What is equally important is the braking performance on offer. When it comes to the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid, we are happy to report that the car offers impeccable braking through its Akebono sourced brakes. The initial bite is sharp, along with great progression as you stomp more on the pedal. The regenerative braking is brilliantly tuned as well and hence doesn’t feel very intrusive like some of the other competitors.

Though the 0-60 MPH and a quarter-mile time of 3.8 seconds and 12.7 seconds posted by the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is impressive for the segment in comparison to the Lexus LS500h Hybrid, which took a higher time of 5.1 seconds and 13.5 seconds. However, the fully electric Tesla Model S Performance and Porsche Tycan Turbo gave out a much better 0-60 MPH time of 2.3 and 2.4 seconds, respectively.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The fuel efficiency offered by the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is one area which impressed us the most in comparison to the rivals. Polestar offers a combined 58 MPGe, along with an electric-only range of close to 60 miles on a full charge. With the gas and electric motors working in harmony, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid will return an impressive 343 miles of range with a fuel tank capacity of 13.2 gallons.

The fuel efficiency on offer from the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is quite great for the segment, with the 60 miles of the fully electric range being one of the highest in the hybrid luxury coupe segment. The underpowered engine of the Lexus LS500h Hybrid also helps in extracting a great combined range of 621 miles. Both the Tesla Model S Performance and the Porsche Taycan Turbo also offer a fabulous range of 370 miles and 225 miles, respectively.

Interior
8.0/10

If we had to describe the interior of the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid in one word, it has to be classy. Step into the wide cabin of the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid to understand the level of opulence and plushness offered by this Swedish marque. The interior is taken from the other luxurious offerings like the S90 and V90 and hence looks quite beautiful. What makes the Polestar 1 stand out from the sea of boring German coupes is the modern yet contemporary design language that Volvo is quite synonymous with. The interior of Polestar 1 is quintessentially Volvo with the finest quality leather draped all over the interior along with carbon fiber and aluminum inserts to uplift the cabin to an even superior level.

The seats are covered in leather as well and get a host of features like the heated functionality and electronic adjustability. However, the seats don’t have massaging and ventilated functionality, which should have been available at such a price tag. We also didn’t like the lower than adequate cushioning on offer in the seats, and hence the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid isn't as comfortable as the Lexus LS500 H or the Porsche Taycan Turbo for long-distance cruising. The rear seats and trunk space on offer are appalling too.

Even though the interior of the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid offers a high-quality level and opulence, the space on offer is quite poor in comparison to the likes of the competition. The front row of the Polestar 1 offers great headroom, legroom, and shoulder room, quite similar to that of the Lexus LS500h Hybrid. However, the rear seat space is mediocre, and even the kids would find it claustrophobic in here. In comparison, we found out that the Lexus offers the best in class rear-seat space. The cargo capacity of 4.4 cubic feet offered by Polestar is also the lowest of the segment, which is led by the Tesla Model S Performance.

How’s the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid's infotainment system?

The 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid comes with a large touchscreen infotainment system getting all the regular features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM radio, and many more. This is a full touchscreen unit, and there are only a few buttons and knobs for using the system manually. Because of that, the driver would find it a bit difficult since he would have to take the eyes off the road to use the system. However, barring a few inherent issues with the usability, the level of features that are stuffed into this system is quite brilliant. We also loved the fluid experience showcased by the touchscreen with almost zero lags and stutters. The display quality was top notch too. However, like any other Volvos, this infotainment unit would have a huge learning curve and hence would take some time to fully understand all the functionalities offered.

The audio is taken care of by the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, which gets a 16-speaker setup along with a subwoofer. The audio quality showcased by the speakers is one of the best we have experienced from a production car and can easily outperform the likes of Lexas, Tesla, and Porsche. The low-end, as well as high-frequency output, is phenomenal, with impressive volume levels and almost nonexistent distortion. Some of the important features that are present in this infotainment system of the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid are mentioned below:

  • Touchscreen HD infotainment system
  • Bowers & Wilkins 16-speaker audio system
  • 12.3” digital gauge cluster
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM radio
  • Polestar Connect app support
  • USB ports
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Voice recognition
  • Steering mounted audio controls

Exterior
9.9/10

The first thing that you notice when you see the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is how majestic it looks from all the angles. Though the car is unmistakably Volvo, the design of the Polestar 1 is unlike any other luxury coupes you see on the road. The front silhouette posts a minimalistic design with a classy looking grille, along with large air dams and character lines on the hood. The Thor hammer-like LED DRL incorporated into the full-LED headlights offers an impressive presence too.

The Polestar 1 is carved out beautifully and hence looks very well proportioned from the sides as well. The multiple character lines and large 21-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels that completely get covered in the wheel wells along with subtle fender flares make it even more desirable. The car looks the best, especially when viewed from the rear quarter. The well-integrated C-shaped LED taillights, a sloping roofline, and a bulky rear bumper, which houses dual exhausts make it one of the sexiest designs to come in recent times.

With one of the lowest wheelbase, height, and length of the luxury hybrid coupe segment, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is surely going to turn heads not just due to its compact proportions but also due to the classy styling offered by the Polestar. However, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid does need to go on a diet as the curb weight of 5,170 lbs is quite high for the segment.

Safety
9.9/10

Safety has always been of paramount importance to Volvo, and the same legacy continues with the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid as well. The number of safety features that come as standard with the Polestar 1 is one of the best we have seen in a long time, and all of this does help to provide the highest safety potential. The Polestar 1 gets the advanced driver assistance feature called the Pilot Assist as standard, which comes with many safety-enhancing features like blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist. Some of these advanced safety features are mentioned below:

  • Blindspot detection
  • Front and rear parking assist
  • 360-degree camera
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Airbags
  • Side impact beams
  • Lane keep assist
  • Lane centering technology
  • Forward collision warning
  • Forward collision mitigation

Along with all these advanced active and passive safety features, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid also impressed us with its solid build quality. The materials used for the construction is top-notch and does feel like a tank. This luxury coupe could easily withstand the minor fender benders and accidents which are likely to happen in the crowded city streets. Because of all these, we are pretty sure that the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid will come out with the highest rating in both the NHTSA and IIHS crash tests.

2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid Vs 2020 Tesla Model S Performance

The fully electric Tesla Model S Performance is one of the best offerings of the segment that showcase unmatched performance, clean styling, and impeccable range. It is much lower-priced too in comparison to that of Polestar. However, Tesla does fall short on the luxury and opulence on offer and overall feels cheaper too.

The Model S Performance is also a mass-market product making it less unique than the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid.

2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid Vs 2020 Lexus LS 500h Hybrid

The Lexus LS500h Hybrid ticks all the boxes for being a well-specced grand touring sedan, which not only drives well but also has the unmatched reliability and dependability of Lexus. But where it falls short is with the clunky infotainment system and an average looking interior which doesn’t have the same finesse of Polestar.

However, due to a much lower price, the 2020 Lexus LS 500h Hybrid is a great proposition, if you could compromise a bit on individuality and luxury.

2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid Vs 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo

The Porsche Taycan Turbo Electric is the car that matches closely with the Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid mainly due to its similar price tag and the sheer performance under the hood. Sure, both of them are entirely different on the powertrain front, with one being an all-electric coupe and the other being a hybrid, nevertheless, the Porsche Taycan with its explosive performance, unmatched handling, and an interior that could easily be considered the best in class, it is a must look if you are contemplating on buying a luxury coupe.

Final Verdict

The Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid turned out to be one of the most surprising offerings of the year 2020. This all-new product from a relatively new brand showcases the true essence of what a luxury hybrid coupe should be. With the incorporation of explosive performance backed by fine handling and driving dynamics, the car will impress the enthusiasts in every way. We also loved the luxurious interior that is quite feature-packed too, along with unmatched safety features on offer as well. Sure, the exorbitant price tag and poor interior space are some of the deal-breakers. However, if you are alright with these cons, the 2020 Polestar 1 Plug-In Hybrid is one of the best the segment has to offer and hence should be checked out if you are looking for a luxury hybrid coupe.
