2020 Subaru Forester Review

Pros

  • Standard All-Wheel-Drive system
  • Plethora of standard Driver-Assistance features
  • Impressive ride and handling
  • Spacious cabin

Cons

  • Underpowered engine
  • Rivals offer better tow-rating
  • Not the most feature-rich SUV of the segment

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2020 Subaru Forester comes in five different trims - Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring. The 2020 Forester receives minor upgrades like a standard adaptive cruise control system for all the trims along with lane centering, LED license plate illuminator, tire pressure monitoring system, rear-seat reminder alert system, and All-Weather package with the Premium trim. However, the car doesn't get any mechanical changes in comparison to the 2019 Forester.

Along with the standard list of features, the 2020 Subaru Forester also gets a decent list of optional features and packages. The Base trim gets an Alloy wheel package, which offers the same 17-inch wheels that is offered with the higher trims. Other features like Rockford Fosgate audio upgrade, auto-dimming mirror with compass, trailer hitch system, crossbar set, STARLINK 8-inch navigation system with reverse automatic braking and heated steering wheel, etc are also offered as an option with all the trim levels.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

"Acceleration of the Subaru Forester is sluggish, whether from a stop or pulling ahead of slower cars on the freeway."-Edmunds.com

The 2020 Subaru Forester comes with a 2.5L naturally aspirated flat-four motor producing 182 hp at 5,800 RPM and 176 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 RPM. This motor feels quite lethargic due to its poor low-end performance on offer. The mid-range performance is also nothing remarkable and hence merging the freeway and overtaking fast-moving traffic will not be very easy.

The 2020 Subaru forester comes with the same Lineartronic CVT transmission and is mated to the full-time AWD system for all five trims. As a result, the 2020 Forester is capable of towing 1,500 lbs. This CVT automatic transmission gets many features like 7-speed manual shift mode, hill descent control, and X-Mode dual-mode system. Paddle shifters are also on offer with all the trims.

The 2.5L naturally aspirated flat-four motor under the hood of the 2020 Subaru Forester propels it from 0-60 MPH in 8.5 seconds. It also manages to do the quarter-mile run in 16.7 seconds. When pitched against the competition, the 2020 Forester clearly overpowers the segment as far as 0-60 MPH is concerned. The 2020 CR-V comes close with a 0-60 MPH time of 8.8 seconds, followed by the 2020 Rogue with 8.9 seconds. The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan comes to the last position with 9.4 seconds of 0-60 MPH time.

Though the 2020 Subaru Forester turned out to be the fastest accelerating car, the motor on offer is not as refined and punchy as that of the 2020 Honda CR-V. However, the 2020 Forester came out with impressive handling, ride quality, and braking performance, making it more fun to drive and dynamically superior to the competitors. The 2020 Forester did a 60-0 MPH braking test in 118 feet, which is one of the highest in the segment.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2020 Subaru Forester offers a gas mileage of 26 MPG within the city limits. Take it out on the highway and this figure will escalate to 33 MPG, equating to a combined mileage of 29 MPG. In comparison to the rivals of the compact crossover SUV segment, this combined gas mileage of 29 MPG is one of the best.

Since the 2020 Forester comes with a single engine and gearbox combination, it returns the same 432 miles of tank range inside the city and 548 miles of tank range on the freeways. A combined range of 481 miles is also class-leading. However, a major reason for the impeccable fuel efficiency on offer is the 16.6-gallon fuel tank and the low curb weight of 3,449 lbs.

In comparison, the 2020 Tiguan emerges out to be the least fuel-efficient contender here, despite having the smallest engine in the segment. The 2020 Honda CR-V grabs the first position in terms of gas mileage on offer, returning a respectable 30 MPG combined. Both the 2020 Nissan Rogue and the 2020 Subaru Forester gave out an identical 29 MPG of combined gas mileage.

Interior
8.5/10

"The Forester's cabin is a straight-forward, frill-free affair with a good driving position and great outward visibility."-Caranddriver.com

The 2020 Subaru Forester series comes with caramel and black-colored interior for all the trims. The seats of the 2020 Forester come wrapped in leather on the top of the line Limited and Touring trims while the lower Base, Premium, and Sport trims feature premium cloth upholstery. Along with that, the 2020 Forester also gets many other standard features like a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats, Harmon Kardon audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control air conditioning system, and many more as standard. However, the Base trim misses out on some of these features.

The 2020 Subaru Forester offers the best in class headroom, legroom, and shoulder room for the rear seat passengers. Even the front seat space is impressive for the 2020 Forester and is second to none. The 2020 Honda CR-V comes to a close second position, followed by the 2020 Nissan Rogue. However, the 2020 Tiguan gave a lower front and middle row space since it is the only offering with a third row. The cargo capacity of 35.4 cubic feet present in the 2020 Forester is quite decent too. However, both the 2020 Nissan Rogue and the 2020 Honda CR-V offers a better space of 39.3 cubic feet and 39.2 cubic feet, respectively.

The Sport trim can also be upgraded with this system for some extra money. The top of the line Touring trim also features the same unit. However, it is equipped with complimentary navigation services. It comes mated to a more premium 9-speaker audio setup from Harman Kardon which gave out an excellent audio experience.

Exterior
6.0/10

"Simplistic exterior design will speak to the sensible car buyers looking for something that's well-made but not particularly flashy."-Caranddriver.com

Last refreshed in 2019 and carried over exactly to 2020, the Subaru Forester has let go of its curvy and sleek appearance altogether and is now accentuated with bold creases especially around the headlamps that impart an “eye-brow” effect to them. Even then, the 2020 Subaru Forester retains all the exterior features of the outgoing 2019 Forester like the LED headlights with integrated LED DRL, 17-inch alloy wheels for all the trims except the Base trim, All-Weather package including heated exterior mirrors and windshield de-icer, and chrome accents on the front and side silhouette, giving it an upmarket appeal.

The 2020 Subaru Forester is also offered with the optional 5-spoke machined 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels along with LED steering responsive headlights, roof spoiler, panoramic sunroof, raised roof rails, and chrome finished exhaust outlet. The Limited, Sport, and Touring trim get body-colored folding side mirrors with integrated turn signals as well.

The 2020 Forester is not the best in terms of dimensions here. It just barely manages to defeat the 2020 Honda CR-V in terms of wheelbase and is overpowered by the 2020 Nissan Rogue and the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan offering 106.5-inch and 109.8-inch, respectively. However, the 2020 Forester leads in terms of ground clearance with 8.7-inches. Some of the exterior features on offer with the 2020 Subaru Forester are:

  • LED steering responsive headlights
  • Rear spoiler
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Windshield wiper de-icer with heated external mirrors
  • Satin chrome exterior mirrors with integrated indicators
  • Roof Rails

Safety
9.9/10

The 2020 Subaru Forester got a 5-star overall crash safety rating in the NHTSA crash-test. The 2020 Forester also got a good rating in almost all the subsections of the IIHS crash test. Along with that, it received the top safety pick from the IIHS, making it one of the safest compact crossover SUVs in the segment.

Apart from the excellent build quality on offer, the 2020 Subaru Forester offers many advanced driver-assistance and safety features like automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring system, Subaru Starlink safety and security services, and rear cross-traffic alert system as standard too.

Competition
9.0/10

2020 Subaru Forester vs 2020 Nissan Rogue

The 2020 Subaru Forester is faster, more spacious, and also costs lesser than the 2020 Nissan Rogue. Apart from its slightly better looks and more cargo space on offer, the 2020 Rogue is completely overshadowed by the 2020 Subaru Forester. The Forester’s standard feature list is also bigger than the Rogue’s. Hence, if you can compromise on these, then it’s the 2020 Subaru Forester that wins this battle hands down.

2020 Subaru Forester vs 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is slightly more powerful and economical than the Subaru Forester. It is also the only offering here with a third row. In terms of build quality on offer, the 2020 Tiguan feels slightly better put together in comparison to the 2020 Forester. They both are equally matched in terms of performance and driving experience front too, even though the 2020 Forester edges out in terms of acceleration. However, since the 2020 Forester gets more interior and driver-assistance features as standard, we would recommend you to get the 2020 Subaru Forester.

2020 Subaru Forester vs 2020 Honda CR-V

The 2020 Honda CR-V ticks most of the boxes for a well-rounded compact crossover SUV. It has a spacious interior and a smooth and decently fast powertrain. The gas mileage on offer is the best-in-class as well. Both of these vehicles have been awarded maximum points in the crash test which is why it is no harm in choosing either of the two. Due to the more simple and better-appointed cabin and better reliability factor, we believe that the 2020 Honda CR-V offers a better deal out of the two.

Final Verdict

The Subaru Forester has always been well-received by American car buyers for its excellent versatility, legendary all-wheel-drive system, and impressive gas mileage on offer. With the 2020 Subaru Forester, all these pros are still retained by the marque. Along with that, the cabin is quite spacious coupled with a decently powerful 2.5L naturally aspirated flat-four motor and top-notch safety potential makes the 2020 Forester a proposition that cannot be overlooked. Hence, if you are on the lookout for a compact crossover SUV, the 2020 Subaru Forester should be on top of your list.
