About 2020 Toyota Sienna

3.5

Overall Rating

2020 Sienna remains unchanged from its previous iteration, except for the addition of the Nightshade Edition Package which is available with the SE trim and gives this Toyota black cosmetic touches on the exterior.

The glory days of minivans are long gone. Dodge Caravan was the first minivan in the US. The pop culture loved these vans and it soon became the mainstay of the US car market. However, since the turn of the 21st century, minivans have lost their mojo.

We suggest you buy the SE trim as it strikes the perfect balance between price and features. You can also add the new Nightshade Edition Package that will give your Sienna a black cosmetic touch.

2020 Toyota Sienna Review

Pros

  • Availability of AWD drivetrain
  • Comfortable Cabin
  • Composed Ride Quality

Cons

  • Dated Design
  • Lackluster Central Console
  • Poor Acosutic Insulation

2020 Sienna remains unchanged from its previous iteration, except for the addition of the Nightshade Edition Package which is available with the SE trim and gives this Toyota black cosmetic touches on the exterior.

Overview

The glory days of minivans are long gone. Dodge Caravan was the first minivan in the US. The pop culture loved these vans and it soon became the mainstay of the US car market. However, since the turn of the 21st century, minivans have lost their mojo.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

2020 Toyota Sienna is segregated into 5 trim levels like it’s predecessor. All trims are powered by the same 3.5L naturally-aspirated V6 unit. Sienna is also the only minivan in the US that offers the option for an AWD drivetrain.

All trims of the 2020 Sienna comes with a wide range of standard convenience and safety features. The list only gets more and more impressive as you climb up the trim ladder. However, the highlight of the features table must be the addition of an Auto Acess seat in the LE and XLE trims which is specially designed for differently-abled persons. None of its rivals offer the same.

Which trim do we recommend?

We suggest you buy the SE trim as it strikes the perfect balance between price and features. You can also add the new Nightshade Edition Package that will give your Sienna a black cosmetic touch.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The familiar 3.5 L naturally-aspirated V6 unit powers the 2020 Toyota Sienna. This motor also powered its predecessor and churns out 296 horses and 263 lb/ft of peak torque. Transmission duties are taken care of by an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Power is transferred to the front or all four wheels. This is a smart move to boost the sales of this minivan as Sienna is the only minivan in the US that offers an AWD drivetrain.

Power delivery is linear and the transmission does its job well. However, at lower revs, the engine is very dull. Only after crossing the 4.5k mark does this minivan feel lively. Also, be prepared for a ride that lacks engagement on the highway. Yes, you have the power of almost 300 horses, but there is no excitement at all. It settles down after a certain speed and just cruises along the highway. Then again, it’s a minivan and not an SUV, and that’s how minivans are supposed to behave, right?

How fast is it?

With the power of almost 300 horses at its disposal, it is not surprising that the 2020 Toyota Sienna is the fastest accelerating car in the segment. It can race to 60 from naught in 6.9 seconds, easily outrunning all of its competitors. It can also complete the quarter-mile run in 15.3 seconds, again the fastest in the segment. Having an AWD drivetrain also aids in the quick acceleration.

Talking about the competition, this Toyota is followed by The Pacifica with the 0-60 run taking 7.4 seconds and the quarter-mile run clocking in at 15.6 seconds. Kia Sedona and Honda Odyssey with identical acceleration performance.

How well does it stop?

The Sienna ships out of the factory with ventilated disk brakes and ABS on all the four wheels. The rotor size on the front wheels has a diameter of 12.9 inches while the rear ones have 12.2-inch rotors.

Stopping this mammoth takes some serious effort and the braking system onboard does a great job at it. The application of the pedal is fairly easy and the bite kicks in instantaneously. There is no noticeable nosedive under the regular application. However, when applied under emergency situations, the nosedive is fairly prominent.

What about the driving dynamics?

The overall ride quality of the Sienna is fairly smooth and composed. However, it not as smooth as that of the Pacifica or the Odyssey. Minor road imperfections are well masked, however, bigger bumps will make its way into the cabin. Also, the acoustic insulation of the Sienna is far from best in the segment. Noise will creep into the cabin at high speeds.

The steering is neither very hard nor feather-light. It’s perfectly weighted and maneuvering it through the city streets will not be an issue. However, the body roll is very evident and cornering at high speeds will definitely make you nervous.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The fuel-economy of this Toyota is good, considerating the fact that it churns out almost 300 horses and weighs almost 4500lbs. If you opt for the FWD drivetrain, the Sienna will run 19 miles in a gallon of gas and on the highway, this car will run 26 miles on the same amount of gas.

Interior
7.5/10

There is no shortage of space in the cabin of the 2020 Sienna. The front seats are extremely spacious and well adjustable for the perfect seating position. The support is sufficient and you won’t be much fatigued over the course of a long drive. Higher trims also come with the heating capability of that extra bit of comfort and luxury.

Moving on to the 2nd row of seats, it comes in 2 variations. If you choose the base L trim or the top Limited trim or choose to go with AWD, you’ll have a pair of captains chair. For all the other trims, you’ll get the standard 3 seaters 2nd-row seats. The seats are surprisingly spacious and comfortable. The top trims also have lounge-type recliner seats that are also equipped with foot support.

The 3rd-row seats are comfortable, but they are more suited for kids. Fitting in 3 fully grown adults is only advisable during shorter drives. When it comes to color and upholstery, there are quite a few options to choose from.

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment is taken care of by a 7’’ touch screen that comes with Toyota’s Entune 3.0. The screen is vibrant and the touch is very responsive. However, like all other Honda cars, the UI is very unintuitive and dated.

Apple CarPlay is present but there’s no Android Auto. There is also Dynamic Navigation to ensure hassle-free travel wherever you go. Then is WiFi connect powered by Verizon which can be accessed by anyone on board the Sienna.

How much cargo can it store?

You can fit in anything you want in this car, literally. The cargo space behind the 3rd row of seats is 39.1 cubic feet, which is huge. But the story does not end there. Fold the 3rd row of seats and space instantly increases to 87.1 cubic feet. Slide the 2nd row of seats and now you have a massive cargo space of 150 cubic feet. Yep! That's right, 150. That is more space than a single room apartment in New York City.

What are the creature comforts on offer?

The latest iteration of the Toyota Sienna does come with an impressive list of features. Some of them are

  • Three-zone automatic climate control with air filter, individual temperature settings for driver, front passenger and rear-seat passengers, and separate rear digital control panel
  • Fabric-trimmed front seats; 6-way adjustable driver’s seat; 4-way adjustable front passenger seat
  • 7-passenger seating with removable perforated fabric-trimmed second-row captain’s chairs and tip-up and long-slide feature
  • Fabric-trimmed 60/40 Split & Stow 3rd Row seat with one-motion stow
  • Speedometer, tachometer, coolant temperature and fuel gauges; 4.2-in. color TFT Multi-Information Display (MID) screen
  • Remote keyless entry system with lock, two-stage unlock and panic functions
  • Power windows with auto up/down, jam protection in all positions and manual rear quarter windows

Exterior
3.0/10

The styling of the Toyota Sienna is unlike any other minivan. When compared to its rivals such as the Pacifica and the Odyssey, the exterior styling does look dated. And rightly so, the exterior shell has mostly remained unchanged for the last 5 years. The front fascia borrows certain cues from other Toyota cars, such as the signature grille and the angular headlamps.

The rear end is very minimal and apart from the large tail lamps, there are no defining design characteristics. The side profile is sleek. There are no prominent body lines. The roof rails apart from adding to its look also add to the utility of this minivan. However, there is no denying that Sienna is in desperate need of a styling refresh.

Toyota Sienna vs Kia Sedona

With the Sienna, you get the reliability of Toyota. The Sienna is also powered by one of the most powerful engines in the segment. Otherwise, there’s very little separating the two. The design can be a deciding factor here. Sienna adheres to the recent design language of Toyota, which is most evident in its front grille. The Sedona, on the other hand, sticks with a boxy design, which you’ll either love or hate.

Toyota Sienna vs Honda Odyssey

Sienna and Odyssey are very similar to each other. Both of the Japanese minivans offer spacious cabins, comfortable seats, and great utility. Moving on to the differences, the Honda is question has a better fuel economy than the Toyota. Also, the Odyssey is the more fun to drive car among the two. Thus, it will be a wiser option to spend your money on the Odyssey.

Toyota Sienna vs Chrysler Pacifica

The Pacifica is one of the top-selling minivans in the States. Now you have to be doing something right if you’re selling well in a segment that’s fast fading out. The contemporary design of the Pacifica along with its upscale interiors and great ride quality are some of the reasons behind its sales figures. However, the Sienna has its own bells and whistles. Thus, choosing a car between the two ultimately boils down to your likes and dislikes.

Final Verdict

Sienna is dated, both in the exterior as well as the interior; but it has aged gracefully. Sienna has also loaded it with a few nifty features in the attempt to attract customers. The V6 motor under the hood of the 2020 Sienna is also one of the best in the segment and perfectly balances performance with efficiency. With one of the most spacious cabins, AWD drivetrain, and competitive pricing Toyota might just get away for another year without an overhaul with the Sienna.
