Overall Rating
BMW's mid-sized saloon is considered one of the best all-round cars you can buy, and the latest seventh-generation model delivers the talents of its predecessors with a healthy dose of hi-tech kit and construction in the mix. At this price range, it faces steep competition from some of the other performance executive sedans in the market like the Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53, Audi S6, the Jaguar XF S.
The 2021 BMW M550i xDrive comes in one well-equipped trim, priced at an MSRPÂ $76,800. For this price the specs are impressive, you get a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 which makes 523 hp which does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds with power going to the xDrive AWD system.
Even with the M badge, the M550i comes with a luxurious interior featuring power-adjustable seats and leather upholstery with the 12.3-inch touchscreen running on iDrive 7.0. That said, the 2021 M550i xDrive comes into direct competition with the Mercedes-AMG E 53 and the Audi S6.Â
To be honest, there’s nothing much to think about here. If you want the most potent and best-performing BMW 5-Series but do not want to spend top dollar on the full-fledged M5, you have to go with the M550i trim instead. Although it is not as powerful as the M5, it is more than enough for your everyday drive, even having some fun as well, having all the luxury features and creature comfort of the typical 5-Series executive sedan.

In terms of dimensions, the 2021 BMW M550i is the same as the 2020 model, and there is less than an inch in difference in dimension with the Mercedes-AMG E53 and the Audi S6.
The 2021 BWM M550i has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS. However, the IIHS has crash-tested the regular 5-series sedan, which the M550i shares a structure with, and the 5-series has scored an overall "Good" safety rating.
Nonetheless, the 2021 BMW M550i xDrive comes with a host of standard safety features and driver-aids at your disposal which includes Forward collision warning with collision mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and a few more. There is also the driving assistance plus package (optional - $1,700) which adds active driving assistant pro and traffic jam assistant.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 comes with lesser power and performance, less cargo space but offers some of the fanciest interiors in the automotive industry. However, with the performance and more space for the same price as the AMG, we will pick the BMW M550i xDrive.
2021 BMW M550i Vs. 2021 Audi S6
For $76,800, one will hardly find any car that matches the performance capabilities and the luxury quotient of the BMW M550i. Although there are similar cars with similar performance capabilities, they tend to cost way more than the M550i. Considering all these, the BMW M550i seems to be a bargain.
