2021 BMW X2 Review

Design-wise the X2 is definitely better looking than the X1. With no third window, the 2021 BMW X2 ends up having a large C-pillar which is punctuated by the BMW. It harks back to 3.0 CSL days, so as far as a retro touch is concerned, the X2 is aptly designed. With a starting price of $36,600, the 2021 BMW X2 is offered with a choice of 11 colors and optional Front-Wheel-Drive and All-Wheel-Drive drivetrains.

Pecked comfortably in between the X1 and the X3, the 2021 BMW X2 is more stylish than the X1 without any compromises. With a playful chassis and an eager engine, this crossover can easily give you all the thrills that you can find from a compact and sporty SUV. Available in two trims, the 2021 BMW X2 has a base price of $36,600 for the FWD and $38,600 for the AWD configurations respectively.

There’s also an M-version available. The M35i produces 301-hp while both core X2 models produce 228-hp. Both feature the same 2.0L TwinPower Turbo inline-4 engines. The new X2 gets 2 core trims, sDrive28i, which is an FWD, and xDrive28i which has an AWD configuration. The 2021 BMW X2 goes head-to-head with the 2021 Audi Q3, 2021 Volvo XC40, and the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

"The X2's fun-loving chassis puts it near the top of the subcompact-crossover class." - Car and Driver

The core models of the 2021 BMW X2 include the sDrive28i and the xDrive28i. Both vehicles feature the same 2.0L TwinPower Turbocharged inline-4 engine. The sDrive28i has a starting price of $36,600 and the xDrive28i will set you back at $38,600. Both trims are fairly equipped with most of the luxury that is available in the markets.

However, it does miss out on a bigger infotainment screen, a digital cluster, and some touch buttons that can be found in expensive BMW models. The interior of the BMW X2 is old-school yet contemporary and that makes Sports Activity Coupe stay relevant in the market.

Buying Advice

The BMW X2, like its older sibling, the X1, offers best-in-class technology, spotlight-stealing aesthetic appeal, and effective fuel efficiency. Both the engines are enjoyable and stylish accessories make the X2 an attractive package as a subcompact crossover. However, when it comes down to choosing the right X2, we would recommend going for either the xDrive28. it gets a luxurious cabin and the xDrive28i with its mid-price ends up offering the most value for money, at a price of $38,600.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

" Base models come with the same 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder that sits under the X1's hood, but we favor the M35i's more powerful 302-hp engine. " - Car and Driver

Both the sDrive28i and xDrive28i of the 2021 BMW X2 get the same engine 2.0L TwinPower Turbocharged Inline-4 engine under the hood, which pushes out 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain options are extended with a front-wheel drive and an all-wheel-drive option for the BMW coupe. Regardless of the drivetrain, the 2021 BMW X2 gets an 8-Speed Steptronic Automatic transmission as standard.

The 2021 BMW X2 launches the SAV from zero to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds. The all-wheel-drive powertrain advances the same block to be faster by 0.3 seconds. Fit in the more powerful M35i engine, and the same block pushes the X2 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. The X2 tops a 137 mph speed in the front-wheel-drive configuration.

Displacement-wise, every rival gets a similar engine under the hood.  While the Bimmer and the 2021 Audi Q3 get similar power figures, the Volvo XC40 on the other hand is the least powerful. However, in terms of the torques, all the Germans have similar torque figures as well. But how well do these new compact SUVs perform in terms of braking and handling is a question of our concern.

While 4-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes with Dynamic Brake Control halts the 2021 BMW X2 in just 122 ft when braked at 60 mph. Along with the big ventilated discs all around the 4 corners, the 2021 BMW X2 is also getting a 3 stage DSC, which gives it pull-away assistance, braking readiness, dry braking, and at the same time also compensates for brake fading.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

"The 2021 BMW X2 is somewhat frugal given the amount of power underhood." - The Car Connection

The 2021 BMW X2 equips a similar engine to the previous year's coupe and hence delivers an impressive 24 and 32 mpg on city traffic and highway runs. The SAV also gets a decent 16.1-gallon fuel tank that can stretch the X2 to 434 combined miles with ease without getting thirsty.

Compared to the rivals, the BMW and the Merc deliver similar mpg figures, while the BMW grabs the trophy with a bigger fuel tank. The bigger fuel appetite allows the 2021 BMW X2 to attain a better range in all traffic conditions. The Audi Q3 turns out to be the least efficient rival on the list.

Interior
7.0/10

"While the X2's interior design isn't as expressive as its exterior, the cabin is nicely outfitted and well built." - Car and Driver

Despite being a subcompact crossover, the 2021 BMW X2 has ample space for five people. The front row gets fitted with the two-way power-adjustable seat bolsters and eight-way power-adjustable front seats with memory, while the rear seats compromise a little on the legroom and headroom fronts, owing to X2's sloping roofline. Automatic climate control with micro-filter and air recirculation make the cabin a refreshing space.

While the 2021 BMW X2 M35i trim gets genuine leather upholstery along with racing-inspired M Sport front seats. Front seats are heated and have 12-way power-adjustable including 4-way power lumbar support. An available standard power liftgate and a lower loading lip make loading and unloading heavy baggage easy.

Safety
9.5/10

"The BMW X2 hasn’t been fully crash tested, but it has done well so far." - The Car Connection

BMW is a German automotive leader and keeps the safety of its loyal customers as the main priority. The 2021 BMW X2 also comes packed with a long list of safety as well as driving assistance features as standard, to protect the occupants in all and any worst scenarios. The IIHS titled the 2019 BMW X2 with Top Safety Pick.

The exuberant list of safety features of the 2021 BMW X2 includes a few of the industry's best tech and gadgets. However, some of the main and noticeable features of the 2021 BMW X2 include:

  • Rear Door Child Safety Locks
  • Pre-Collision Safety System
  • Lane Departure Warning Accident Avoidance System
  • Emergency Braking Preparation
  • Traction Control
  • Rear View Camera
  • Road-sign recognition

2021 BMW X2 vs. 2021 Audi Q3

The peppy engine block in both German rivals gives a sporty driving feel. The 2021 Audi Q3 light-to-touch steering feels a bit more agile than the 2021 BMW X2 crossover. On the other hand, the hard push to the pedal shows a slight turbo lag in the Four Rings SUV, which makes it slower than the latter one. Both the German crossovers feature refined and premium cabins with soft and high-quality material and the latest tech support. However, the Audi Q3 is a lesser efficient choice when compared to the BMW.

2021 BMW X2 vs. 2021 Volvo XC40

The 2021 Volvo XC40 is a very worthy opponent, which offers a less dynamic driving style compared to the 2021 BMW X2. The intuitive iDrive system makes the BMW more advanced as compared to the Volvo yet a bigger screen is fitted in the latter. Both vehicles turn out to be luxurious when chosen for their top trim attire. The Volvo isn't as quick and agile as the 2021 BMW X2 even with the bigger engine choice for the Volvo crossover.

2021 BMW X2 vs. 2021 Mercedes Benz GLA-250

The Mercedes Benz GLA-250 is the German automaker's smallest SUV and feels underpowered when compared to the 2021 BMW X2, yet is the quickest choice on the list. While hard cornering body rolls scare the driver to go further on the taco while the BMW X2 is an absolute charm and sporty in driving. The Merc crossover doesn't inherit the brands classy and premium cabin comfort and use of cheaper material are easily noticeable.

Final Verdict

The 2021 BMW X2 is an attractive compact crossover with a desirable sloping roofline, at a fine price of $36,600. The power outputs come out high and the indulging driving dynamics make it a sporty vehicle. The premium and luxury attires are attractive and the M badge brings out the sportiness both inside out. Overall, the X2 is an outstanding choice as a subcompact crossover, with decent space, good cargo spacing, attractive looks, and best-in-class driving quality.
