About 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric

3.9

Overall Rating

Jointly developed with LG Corporation, the Chevrolet Bolt EV hatchback is the only fully-electric vehicle from the American automaker as of now. An affordable fast-charging option and an innovative regenerative-braking paddle also enhance the user experience.

The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is currently on sale in the US at a price that starts at just $36,500. Only two trims are on offer for 2021, with the top-spec Premier trim priced at $41,700. The Premier trim also gets the DC fast charger as part of the standard equipment, as the only significant change for 2021. Chevrolet has also launched the all-new and much upgraded 2022 Bolt EV and Bolt EUV in the market.

This hatchback features a 200-horsepower electric motor paired with a 60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a single-speed transmission. It takes about 10 hours to charge the Bolt's 66-kWh battery pack using a 240-volt outlet. With DC Fast Charging, you can get roughly 100 miles of range in just 30 minutes. Blind Spot detection and other driver assistance features come in as part of the package in the 2021 Bolt EV.

The base LT trim is well equipped, and the extra money for the upgrade doesn’t look that reasonable. Moreover, you could spec the base LT trim the way you want with the optional safety and infotainment packages available according to the requirements and budget.

2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric Review

Pros

  • Superior ride comfort
  • Good response from motor
  • Long driving range
  • Plenty of standard features

Cons

  • Subpar cabin materials
  • Seat cushions aren't very supportive
  • Pricey compared to some rivals

Jointly developed with LG Corporation, the Chevrolet Bolt EV hatchback is the only fully-electric vehicle from the American automaker as of now. An affordable fast-charging option and an innovative regenerative-braking paddle also enhance the user experience.

Overview

The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is currently on sale in the US at a price that starts at just $36,500. Only two trims are on offer for 2021, with the top-spec Premier trim priced at $41,700. The Premier trim also gets the DC fast charger as part of the standard equipment, as the only significant change for 2021.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The all-electric Chevrolet Bolt boasts a long driving range and swift acceleration, but it's let down by some cheap cabin materials and a low safety score for the segment- Cars.USNews

The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is available in just the two trims- LT and Premier. Both feature the same 200-horsepower electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack, and single-speed transmission. However, DC fast charging is now available as standard on the Premier trim.

The entry-level Bolt comes standard with a rearview camera and the Teen Driver system, which lets you do things like set speed and audio volume limits for secondary drivers. Available safety features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, a surround-view parking camera system, a rearview camera mirror, and forward-collision warning.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

Very perky performance in city driving is a hallmark of most electric vehicles, and the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt delivers that- The Car Connection

Although the Chevy Bolt has gotten a refresh both inside and out for the 2022 model year, the engines on both year models remain the same. The 2021 Bolt comes powered by the 66 kWh battery sending power to a single electric motor producing 200 HP and 266 lb-ft of torque via a single-speed transmission.

The Bolt can reach 60 mph in a really quick time as well. The power figures of the Chevrolet Bolt EV are up on the same allay as its direct competitors. However, Tesla Model 3 comes out as the most potent vehicle of the segment with a rated power of 258 hp. The Nissan leaf ranks last with meek power figures.

The brake pedal in the Bolt is quite firm and provides above-average stopping power. Still, the regenerative braking system that recharges the battery when you lift off the accelerator means you can drive in most scenarios without ever touching the brake pedal.

The 2021 Bolt boasts an EPA range of 259 miles on a full charge, which is competitive with other similarly priced electric vehicles such as the Hyundai Kona Electric- Car and Driver

The 2020 Chevy Bolt received significant upgrades, increasing its range by 21 miles with an EPA estimate of 259 miles, and the 2021 model, continues to showcase the same trend. What's really encouraging is the fact that a DC fast charger now comes in as standard in the Bolt without a price hike. This would mean lower range anxiety and lesser charging times.

With electric cars getting better and better every year, the anxiety of range has been a thing of the past. In standard conditions, the Chevy Bolt is the clear winner with the highest figures in terms of total range. But in terms of efficiency and mileage, Tesla is ahead of the competition, and also, there are other variants of the Model 3 with the extended range.

While the Bolt EV has a minimalist cabin with good build quality, it also has too many low-grade plastics for an electric vehicle sporting a $36,000 starting price- Cars.USNews

The interiors of the 2021 Chevy Bolt EV are quite minimalistic, and for this reason, it might look bland for some people. Nonetheless, the interior is well thought without many buttons to fiddle around with the controls being ergonomically placed. Moreover, the tall roofline makes the car feel way spacious than some of its competitors.

That being said, the 2021 Bolt EV seats have got an update with softer materials and more beautiful stitching with electronic adjustability, at least for the driver’s seat and lumbar support. The dashboard is also getting a design update. The shifter is gone, and there are now RND buttons where the shifter was. The Bolt offers 16.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 56.6 cubic feet when the seats are folded flat.

Like the 2020 model, the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt should also be equipped with a 10.2” color touchscreen display for the infotainment system. Although Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come as standard, it doesn’t come with an in-built navigation system. Although the touchscreen display is nice and big and easy to use, its slow response could be frustrating. Moreover, two USB ports come standard at the front.

As for audiophiles, both the trims are equipped with a 6-speaker sound system as standard with the option to upgrade to a more premium 7-speaker Bose audio system on the range-topping Premier trim.

The Bolt EV is no head-turner, and how you see this vehicle plays with your sense of proportion- The Car Connection

Like all first-generation units of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, the 2021 Bolt continues riding on a variant of the GM Gamma 2 platform called the GM BEV2 platform. Since the 2022 model has been launched, GM decided to not fiddle with the styling of the 2021 model and let it carry forward from 2020.

Coming to the looks of the new and larger Bolt EUV, it will be a stretched Bolt with similar looks. It will be 3-inches longer on the wheelbase and 3-inches longer on the trunk space with roughly the same height. The 2021 Bolt EV gets Projector headlights in the front which are encompassed by LED daytime running lamps. The rear also comes with an all-LED lighting setup as well.

Although the Chevy Bolt EV and most of its competitors are more or less in the same ballpark when it comes to exterior dimensions, the Tesla Model 3 is the clear winner with its overall larger dimensions and a longer wheelbase.

Safety
9.0/10

Even if you dismiss the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV as being a small car riding on a big battery pack, safety should be one of your priorities; and in this respect, the Bolt EV performs reasonably well in crash-test results- The Car Connection

The 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV managed to score a perfect 5 out of 5 stars in NHTSA’s overall crash test rating, with 5 stars in most of the individual tests including the rollover test where it managed to get a rollover risk of 9.70%, which is quite low for a tall car like the Bolt. But it wasn't named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. That being said, the 2021 model should be equally as safe, if not better.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is equipped with a host of safety features and driver aids to keep its occupants safe. Some of the key standard safety features of the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV either as standard or as an option should include:

  • 10 airbags
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Forward collision alert
  • Front pedestrian braking
  • HD Rear Vision Camera / HD Surround vision
  • Lane change alert with side blind zone alert
  • Lane keep assisting with lane departure warning
  • Pedestrian safety signal
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV Vs. 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric

Both cars are pretty comparable in terms of price, performance, and range. But the Kona feels even more premium on the inside along with solidly put together on the outside. The Kona also feels much stable and composed at a higher speed than the Bolt.

2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV Vs 2021 Nissan Leaf

Although the Nissan Leaf might not be as good as the Chevy in most things, including its range, the Nissan Leaf is significantly less expensive than the Bolt. It is a solid starting point for someone to own and experience an EV. It is a good option for someone on a budget to own an EV.

2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV Vs 2021 Tesla Model 3

With a similar starting base price for both cars, the Tesla Model 3 gives the Chevy Bolt a run for its money. With a bigger exterior, more premium interior, more power and performance, and a similar range (which could be extended by opting for an extended range variant), the Tesla Model 3 seems better in every way than the Chevy Bolt, which explains its tremendous success and the slow decline in popularity of the Bolt.

Final Verdict

Chevrolet tried to bring an affordable and easy to maintain the fully-electric vehicle to the masses with the Bolt, and the car does a pretty good job. It is decently powerful with good performance figures. Anyway, if you still want one, you can go for the facelifted 2022 Bolt EV, which brings some welcoming changes to the car, including a renewed look. But, in any case, if you want a tired and tested EV that will be easy on your pocket, the Bolt EV is surely one of those vehicles that you can consider buying.
