About 2021 Chevrolet Equinox

3.9

Overall Rating

SUVs are highly demanded in today’s auto market. Hence, there is strong rivalry from competing brands. We’ll be pitting the Chevrolet Equinox against the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester in the SUV market.

The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox sets foot into this year with a decent powertrain, practical interior setup, and a pocket-friendly price tag. Prices for the 2021 Chevy Equinox start at an MSRP of $24,995 and go all the way up to $34,195 for the top-end Premier trim. The 2021 Equinox doesn't get many changes over the 2022 model, to an extent that the Midnight and Sport Special Edition get cloth upholstery, whereas the LT trim gets treated with Black leather upholstery to aid its plush interior styling.

With the best rating of 7.8 out of 10, use our Carindigo inventory to find some of the best local deals for Equinox. Engine to the tune of a 170 hp 1.5L turbocharged unit is the sole powertrain on offer, as the 2.0L turbo has been sidelined for 2021. Primarily, a more updated Chevy Equinox with even better specs will be unveiled in 2022 as a whole new variant. That said, the Equinox shows off its prowess against the likes of Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester.

We would recommend you going for the Premier trim of the Chevrolet Equinox. it is packed with all the necessary features including heated seats, top-rated infotainment system, and loads of safety features.

Engine and Performance
7.3/10

The Equinox pushes and plows through corners and ride quality is unimpressive - MotorTrend

The 2021 Equinox will come up with no big changes in the engine department. The sole powertrain on offer will be a 1.5-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine capable of producing 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. The base engine is standard in all of the trims and will be offered with a 6-speed automatic transmission unit that is also standard.

2022 Equinox will see the 252 hp 2.0L turbocharged unit, along with the 9-Speed AT making its way back again to the Equinox lineup, although presumably now with much more refinement. Chevy’s 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is powerful enough to reach from 0 to 60 MPH in just 8.7 seconds, all the while achieving a top speed of 124 MPH.

This safe inexpensive family SUV handles pretty decently around corners, but cannot be dubbed as a proper off-roader, despite its basic AWD system. Comfort in Equinox takes precedence over agility, which is what most of the buyers in this segment are looking for. The 2021 Equinox also has a towing capacity of 1500 lbs. In the case of its rivals, the Subaru Forester is better than the Equinox in the engine department by providing a more powerful 2.5L turbocharged engine, despite being about $500 cheaper than the Equinox.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox gives fuel economy figures of 1.5L turbocharged engine, manages to deliver about 26 mpg in the city and about 31 mpg out on the highway, and a combined 28 mpg with the FWD setup. The AWD, on the other hand, brings the fuel efficiency further down by 1 mpg to 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, and a combined 27 mpg

The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox comes with a 14.9-gallon fuel tank capacity with the FWD drivetrain. When equipped with AWD, Chevrolet equips the Equinox with a larger 15.6-gallon fuel tank, which leads the AWD variant to have a better-combined driving range of 421 miles than the FWD combined 417 miles. However, its competition the Subaru Forester comes with better mpg figures as does the Ford Escape.

Interior
7.2/10

Made from durable materials and nicely styled, the Equinox's cabin should draw broad appeal. - Car And Driver

No major changes have been introduced in the 2021 Equinox interior. The minor changes that have been brought about are that the $28,695 LT trim has most of its cabin covered with leather. Perforated leather on the dashboard and door panels further add to the ambiance. Moreover, cloth upholstery is available throughout the Midnight and Sport Special editions. The car comes with a five-seater capacity and front seats can be optioned with 8-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated seats.

The Chevrolet Equinox offers 29.9-cu.ft of cargo space, which is convenient and with the rear seats folded it has a max cargo volume of 63.9 cu.ft. The Equinox comes up with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, along with USB and Bluetooth connectivity. It comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay too. Along with this, the car comes with a 7-speaker Bose audio system and a satellite radio and navigation system. Further, it provides wireless charging for the devices and a 4.2- inch digital driver display.

Exterior
8.0/10

The Equinox looks like many other crossovers, once it's past the familiar Chevy split grille - The Car Connection

Chevrolet was supposed to bring out a new iteration of the Equinox with updated exterior and interior styling for 2021 but has been postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So for 2021 Equinox, we make do with the exterior features and design present 2020 model year. The hexagonal headlamps have LED lights at both ends between which there are grills perfectly carved in somewhat pentagonal through slim shape.

The hands-free liftgate and the panoramic sunroof are premium features that make a good addition to the 2021 Equinox lineup. Available in more than ten attractive colors, the Equinox stands out to be one of the more attractive SUVs in the segment. Overall, the new 2021 Chevrolet Equinox is a complete package with excellent dimensions and good looks.

Safety
9.7/10

The Equinox earns a place in the safety honor roll - The Car Connection

No big upgrade has been made in the 2021 version, so the safety features are also almost the same as the earlier version. But that does not mean that there has been any compromise made in terms of the safety of the vehicle. The Chevrolet Equinox is one of the safest SUVs out on the road, as is evident from its roster of driver-assistance features and one of the highest possible crashworthiness ratings.

The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox has an overall "Good" safety rating and has even been awarded the “Top Safety Pick” award by the IIHS. It has also received a perfect five-star safety rating out of a possible five stars from the NHTSA, best scores possible from the NHTSA.

Some of the safety features on offer are:

  • Intellibeam
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Automatic Emergency Braking System
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • LATCH

Competition
7.0/10

2021 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2021 Subaru Forester:

The major section where Chevy tends to best Subaru is the reliability it provides. The reliability rating of Chevrolet is much higher than the of Subaru. The section where the $24,495 Subaru Forester bested Equinox is the interior. The Subaru provides a better cabin and a larger cargo space that makes it rank higher than the Chevy.  Also, it has a better fuel economy along with much responsive handling, which gives it another additional point. But both cars have a considerable price difference which is a very important point when deciding to choose between the two.

2021 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2021 Ford Escape:

Chevy’s Equinox stands higher on the list beating Ford’s Escape in many sections. The fuel tank offered by Chevy is bigger than that of Ford. Moreover, Ford is around $3000 expensive than Chevy. Furthermore, the cargo space provided by Chevy is much higher than that by Ford. On top of which Equinox has a higher safety rating than that of the Ford Escape. So, this makes the 2021 Equinox win the battle against Ford Escape with flying colors.

Final Verdict

The revamped Chevrolet Equinox was earlier planned to launch in the year 2021 itself, but due to the prevailing pandemic circumstances, the launch has been postponed to 2022. All we can say is that the car is going to be an ideal blend of high-tech features and mind-blowing looks that will take the standards of the compact SUV market to another level. Having said that, with minimal features on point, we'd recommend you to either go for the 2020 iteration itself or wait for the 2022 Equinox.
