About 2021 Ford Edge

4.0

Overall Rating

With crossovers and SUVs leading the sales figures, Ford has been capitalizing on the demand with its perfectly positioned midsize crossover, the Ford Edge. It ticks all the boxes when it comes to style, comfort, and luxury at a reasonable base MSRP of $32,495. The performance is also taken care of by a competent 2L 4-cylinder turbocharged motor producing 250 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 Ford Edge is here to compete with the likes of Mazda CX-9, Nissan Murano, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Ford Edge is back in the 2021 avatar to redeem itself as one of the most competent midsize SUVs by taking forward its unmatched exterior styling along with comfort and space that is truly in a league of its own. Coming in at a base MSRP of $31,250 for the lowest SE trim and goes all the way to $40,435 for the top-of-the-line ST-Line and Titanium trim with AWD. However, the Edge remains identical under the hood and retains the competent 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor producing 250 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque.

Along with the regular Ford Edge, the 2021 Edge ST has also made a presence in 2021, which gets an even more 2.7L twin-turbo V6 punching out 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. With the MSRP quite in line with the outgoing model, Ford has managed to keep the price under check as well. Amidst the rising competition from the likes of 2021 Mazda CX-9, 2021 Nissan Murano, and 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, can the 2021 Ford Edge still enthrall the American midsize SUV market like it used to do? Find out more in this in-depth review of the 2021 Ford Edge.

Of all the trims available with the 2021 Ford  Edge, we found out that the SEL is the aptest trim to go for since it showcases a perfect balance between all the required interior and safety features. The SEL trim is also quite economical since it comes for an MSRP of just $35,935, which is much lower than the Titanium trim coming in at a selling price of $39,685 for the FWD version.

2021 Ford Edge Review

Pros

  • Punchy motor
  • Spacious cabin
  • Loaded with features
  • Supple ride quality

Cons

  • Uneven fit and finish
  • Not the best handler

Find out more in this in-depth review of the 2021 Ford Edge.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2021 Ford Edge comes with 4 different trims, namely SE, SEL, ST-Line, and Titanium. The price starts from $31,250 for the SE trim and goes to $40,345 for the Titanium and ST-Line trims with AWD. All the trims do come with the same 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor mated to an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission as standard. However, the 2021 Ford Edge is available in both FWD and AWD disguise. Along with that, there is also an Edge ST version, which is supposed to be more hardcore in terms of performance on offer in comparison to the regular Edge.

The 2021 Ford Edge also comes with many optional packages and features like a cold-weather package for $495, Ford Co-Pilot 360 assist package for $795, Convenience package for $93, and Class II Trailer Tow package for $435. Along with that, the top-spec Titanium and ST-Line trims, which come for $41,680 also get a host of features like a moonroof, 20-inch alloy wheels, wireless charging, active park assist, ambient lighting, and many more.

Buying Advice

Of all the trims available with the 2021 Ford  Edge, we found out that the SEL is the aptest trim to go for since it showcases a perfect balance between all the required interior and safety features. The SEL trim is also quite economical since it comes for an MSRP of just $35,935, which is much lower than the Titanium trim coming in at a selling price of $39,685 for the FWD version. In comparison to the equivalently priced trims of 2021 CX-9 and 2021 Murano, the 2021 Edge manages to come out with more features and tech for a slightly lesser base price too.

"Overall, the turbo four-cylinder engine is up to the task of moving the Edge. However, at freeway speeds, the acceleration could be better."-Edmunds.com

The 2021 Ford Edge borrows its powertrain from the 2020 model and offers two engine options. For people that crave power, Ford offers a power-packed twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine with 335 horsepower, which is only available in the sporty ST trim. However, the 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor, which showcases an impressive 250 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, is available as standard with all the other trims of the 2021 Ford Edge.

The 8-speed automatic transmission with multiple driving modes does a decent job to keep the 2021 Edge on its toes by providing smooth gear shifting operation. However, it is not as fast as the one in the Mazda CX-9, which felt a bit more enthusiastic. Along with a decent automatic transmission, the 2021 Ford Edge also comes in both FWD and AWD disguise, where the AWD is a $2,000 option for all five trims including the ST trim.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee swiftly accelerates from a standstill leaving all its rivals in the rearview mirror, making it the fastest on our list. The Grand Cherokee is followed closely by the 2021 Mazda CX-9 in terms of acceleration, to grab second place on the podium.  The 2021 Ford Edge came in the third position due to a slightly higher 0-60 MPH time of 7.6 seconds, which is followed by the 2021 Nissan Murano with 8.2 seconds.

The soft suspension setup equates to a great ride quality for the 2021 Ford Edge. The car glides over all the undulations and potholes that are thrown at you at low city speeds with ease. Even as the speeds climb, the SUV remains composed with very little vertical movement. This suspension setup also helps the SUV to remain calm and composed while tackling a corner too, providing minimal body roll and sure-footed handling. The braking and steering performance was also excellent. However, we found the steering to be a bit low on feel and feedback.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The Twin-Scroll 2.0L EcoBoost motor in the 2021 Edge gave out a fuel economy of about 22 MPG and 29 MPG in the city and highway respectively, with a 25 MPG of combined fuel efficiency, which is the same as the 2020 model year. With a fuel tank capacity of 18.5-gallons, the 2021 Ford Edge managed to give out an excellent combined range of 462 miles before needing a fill-up.

The higher-powered 2021 Ford Edge ST returned a lower 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway, which equated to a lower 21 MPG combined. With a fuel tank capacity of 18.5-gallons on offer, the 2021 Ford Edge ST returned a combined range of 388 miles, which is quite respectable for a performance-centric SUV.

The 2021 Ford Edge showcases best in class gas mileage in comparison to the arch-rivals like the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which managed to churn out the lowest combined gas mileage of 21 MPG. Even the 2021 Nissan Murano and 2021 Mazda CX-9 gave out a slightly combined gas mileage of 23 MPG and 24 MPG, respectively. However, when it comes to the range on offer, the Jeep Grand Cherokee gave out the class-leading combined range of 516 miles.

Interior
7.5/10

"Plenty spacious for four adults, the Edge's cabin is a comfortable place for a commute or a road trip."-Caranddriver.com

2021 Ford Edge comes with an almost similar interior as that of the 2020 model. However, there has been an increase in the number of cabin features. The interior of the 2021 Ford Edge comes with the same dashboard and door card design, with a subtle black and beige color combination along with chrome, silver, and gloss black treatment, making it quite beautiful to look at. The top of the line trims like ST-Line and Titanium, which comes for $40,435, gets features like a premium 9-speaker audio system, wireless charging, moonroof, ambient lighting, and many more too.

In midsize SUVs, Ford Edge is quite synonymous with the class-leading cabin space on offer and the same continues with the 2021 iteration as well. This SUV comes with an unmatched headroom, legroom, and shoulder room, in comparison to all the other rivals like the 2021 Nissan Murano, 2021 Mazda CX-9, and 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, the Mazda CX-9 is the only 7-seater SUV in the segment. The cargo capacity of 39.2 cubic feet offered by the 2021 Ford Edge is class-leading too.

Ford Edge’s infotainment duties are handled by a 12-inch touchscreen SYNC 4A infotainment system as a standard system across all the trims. This SYNC 4A infotainment system is in a league of its own not only in terms of how intuitive it is to use with large icons and excellent touch sensitivity but also due to the number of features that are available onboard. It gets all the standard features like wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM radio support, navigation support, and many more, making it the best infotainment system which comes with any midsize SUV.

The audio duties are handled by the standard 9-speaker audio system, which is quite good with decent bass output on offer without muffling the high-frequencies notes. However, we were quite awestruck by the 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system, putting out the best audio experience we have heard, even from a segment above.

Some of the highlights of the infotainment and audio system features of the 2021 Ford Edge are mentioned below:

  • 12-inch touchscreen SYNC 4A infotainment system
  • Standard Premium 9 speaker audio system
  • Optional Bang and Olufsen audio system
  • FordPass Connect with 4G Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • Voice-activated navigation system
  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Wireless Charging Pad
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Two USB ports

Exterior
7.5/10

"It’s a sharp-looking rig, too, but it faces heady competition from the even more enticing competitors from Japan and America"-Caranddriver.com

The 2021 Ford Edge has retained the exterior styling from the 2020 model and doesn't get any major changes, apart from two new colors, namely Carbonized Gray and Lithium Gray, and an updated alloy wheel design, all of which makes the Edge look quite elegant. The ST-Line trim, which comes for an MSRP of $39,685 for the FWD version and $41,680 for the AWD version, comes with all the bells and whistles in terms of exterior design like ST-Line badging, 20-inch gloss black wheels, moonroof, and a blacked-out front grille and air dams. The LED light comes as a standard option across all the trims too.

Apart from the features that come as standard with the trims, there are also multiple optional extras like a panoramic sunroof for $1,595, 18-inch bright -machined aluminum wheels with premium black-painted pockets for $895, and three optional colors namely Rapid Red, Star White, and Burgundy Velvet, all of which are retailed for $395. Along with that, the 2021 Ford Edge also gets two new gray colors too.

Even with one of the lowest width and height in the segment, which comes in at 75.9" and 68.3", the 2021 Ford Edge does manage to stand out due to its classy and traditional design language, which even after many years of being in production, still looks fresh to our eyes. However, we still think that the Mazda CX-9 is the best looker of the segment due to its youthful design language. It is also the lightest of the lot with 3,923 lbs.

Some of the exterior features of the 2021 Ford Edge are:

  • 20-inch machined aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Chrome Side Window Trim and Front Windshield Trim
  • Speed Sensitive Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers
  • Lip Spoiler
  • Fully Galvanized Steel Panels

Safety
9.6/10

Though the 2021 Ford Edge hasn't been crash-tested by the NHTSA yet, this SUV managed to get a good rating in all the subsections of the IIHS crash test. The 2020 moniker received an impressive 5-star rating in the NHTSA crash test too. All these help in solidifying the fact that the Ford Edge is quite excellent when it comes to safety. The 2021 Ford Edge managed to impress us with its tough as nail built quality and panel strength, which were found to be missing from some of the rivals in the segment.

One of the other reasons why the 2021 Ford Edge succeeded to come out with top-notch crash safety ratings is due to the presence of many advanced active and passive safety features like automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, post-collision braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and many more.

2021 Ford Edge Vs 2021 Mazda CX-9

2021 Mazda CX-9 is known for its excellent all-around performance among midsize SUVs. The 2021 Mazda CX-9 came out as a more driver's car with excellent driving dynamics and performance on tap, all of which equated to more smiles to the driver. However, the infotainment system on offer with the CX-9 is nowhere close to what Ford has provided with the 2021 Edge. The CX-9 is also more expensive than the Edge, coming in at an MSRP of $33,960.

2021 Ford Edge Vs 2021 Nissan Murano

Ford Edge is going to be better in almost every factor such as fuel economy, performance, and cabin space in comparison to the Murano. However, one area where Nissan strikes a point is in the styling, due to its cheeky and futuristic design appealing to the masses quite easily. With the 2021 Nissan Murano coming in for a base price of $31,530, it does manage to undercut the 2021 Ford Edge in terms of price. However, the all-new Nissan Murano is expected to launch in 2021, and hence it is better not to take the plunge with this third-generation Nissan Murano.

2021 Ford Edge Vs 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Though the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee came out as the most powerful SUV of the lot, it couldn't match the space and versatility offered by the 2021 Ford Edge. Along with that, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee also feels a bit long in the tooth, due to it being in production for close to 10 years. The all-new fifth generation of the Grand Cherokee is expected to hit the market sometime in late 2021 as well. Even when considering all the performance and kit you get as standard with the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee for an even lower MSRP of $31,990 in comparison to the Edge, we still wouldn't recommend you to buy a car that is at the end of its life cycle.

Final Verdict

The 2021 Ford Edge turned out to be an excellent proposition in the midsize SUV segment due to its spacious and feature-rich cabin, excellent ride quality, top-notch safety potential, and an infotainment system that could easily shame cars from a segment above. Along with that, the 2021 Edge also managed to redeem itself as a decent performer without compromising one bit on the fuel efficiency front. Hence, if you are looking for a midsize family SUV, the 2021 Ford Edge should be high up on your watchlist.
