The 2021 Ford Escape has been released in the market and its price starts from $24,885. It is available in a total of 4 trims - S, SE, SEL, and Titanium. There are also the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid variants, they are reviewed separately for better understanding. The 2021 Escape gets two engine options- a 181-hp 1.5L turbo inline-3 engine and a 250-hp 2.0L turbo inline-4 engine.

The 2021 Escape can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 8.9 seconds. That may not be the most exciting factor but what's really exciting is its spacious interior. The 2021 Escape offers a maximum cargo space of 65.4 cu-ft. Its competition, however, remains intact with the likes of Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V fighting it out in this straightforward bunch of compact SUV titles.

We would recommend the SEL trim if you are looking to buy the 2021 Ford Escape. This trim adds synthetic leather upholstery, a hands-free liftgate, and heated steering. It also adds the SE trim's Convenience and Cold Weather packages as standard. We also recommend you opt for the $3,300 stronger four-cylinder engine.

6.5/10

This engine makes plenty of power, allowing it to easily squirt through traffic and accelerate up to highway speeds-Edmunds

Two engines are on offer for the 2021 Ford Escape. A 1.5L turbo inline-3 engine is standard on the S, SE, and SEL trim. It makes 181 hp and 190 lb-ft. of torque. Standard on the Titanium trim and optional on the SEL trim is a 2.0L turbo inline-4 engine that churns out 250 hp and 280 lb-ft. of torque. Both these engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2021 Escape has a reputation for refined, almost sporty driving dynamics. It returns a quiet and compliant ride. The suspension is nicely damped and offers a smooth ride over rough services. The steering is really nicely weighted but its turning radius is quite long. Around the corners, the Escape feels planted with almost no body roll.

With the base engine, the 2021 Escape sprints from 0-60 MPH in 8.9 seconds while the quarter-mile test is completed in 16.6 seconds. The four-banger does the same test in 7.7 seconds. At the front, 12.8-inch rotors are fitted whereas 12-inch at the back. In the brake test, the 2021 Escape decelerates from 60-0 MPH in just 128 feet, which is quite good for its size.

The Escape's cabin is functional and pleasantly laid out- Edmunds

The interior of the 2021 Ford Escape is very stylish, spacious, and seats up to 5 people. The cloth seat upholstery is high textured and rich in vibrancy, with top trims having genuine leather upholstery adorning the cabin.  The seats are very much comfortable and provide a good all-round space with ample legroom and headroom. Power-adjustable and heated front seats are also available depending on the trim one chooses to buy.

The rear seats recline at an angle that adds to the comfort level of the Escape. This inclination helps in increasing the legroom and also makes more cargo space. Cargo capacity of 33.5 cu-ft. if offered in the 2021 Escape. Folding the rear seats expands the space to 65.4 cu-ft. The cabin does suffer from the use of cheap plastic panels in some places but overall the cabin is striking and delightful.

The Honda CR-V offers 6 cu-ft. more than the Escape. The rear legroom is quite less in the Toyota RAV4 compared to the Escape. Meanwhile, the Mazda CX-5 is the least practical SUV. The 2021 Escape features SYNC 3 infotainment system that includes an 8-inch floating screen that is very intuitive to operate. The Titanium variant gets a 12.3-inch digital cluster. Lower trims get a 6-speaker stereo system while the Titanium model comes with a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.

The system is very aptly packed with features and has a clean interface as well. However, with the finicky graphics and awful animation along with complex configuration, the digital gauge is not as effective and useful to operate as the ones available in its rivals. There are some physical knobs placed below the screen with the arm's reach for climate and audio settings. Some of the most eminent interior and infotainment features of the 2021 Ford Escape are:

  • Tilt and telescoping steering column with cruise and audio controls
  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • Power front seats with heated & ventilated functions
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

The front fascia looks like it might come from a Kia or some Euro-market crossover SUV- Kelly Blue Book

The major refreshment that the model went in last year continues for the 2021 Ford Escape as well.  The clean and shapely body lines give it a more sporty and aggressive style. The sleeker LED headlamps, DRLs, and fog lamps are only standard on the top-end Titanium trim. The 2021 Escape sits quite low to the ground compared to other rivals at 7.3 inches.

The rear end of the Escape looks very simple and humble. The curves are more oval than they used to be and just adds to the distinct styling of the Escape. The wide wheelbase of the 2021 Escape speaks for its roomy interior. Overall, the 2021 Escape looks more like a sedan than an SUV, especially when compared to its heavier and bulkier rivals.

2021 Ford Escape vs 2021 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 is nearly $1,400 costlier than the Ford Escape. It produces 21 hp more than the Escape and yet the Escape has better performance stats. Despite being powerful, it has similar MPG figures to the Escape. The Escape's interior feels a bit spacious but the RAV4 excels in terms of cargo capacity. Speaking of safety, the Escape has better safety ratings.

2021 Ford Escape vs 2021 Honda CR-V

Producing 9 hp more than the Ford Escape doesn't make much difference as the Honda CR-V loses to it in both performance tests. But, the CR-V turns out to be the most fuel-efficient SUV in this segment. The CR-V's second-row feels cramped for six-footers in contrast to the Escape but its cargo capacity is one of the best in this competition.

2021 Ford Escape vs 2021 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is the only SUV in this competition that beats the Ford Escape in both performance tests thanks to its compact dimensions. In terms of fuel economy, the Escape has better MPG figures. The CX-5's interior feels upscale with better materials. It also boasts better cargo space than the Escape. The Escape strikes back with top safety features loaded.
