About 2021 Honda Odyssey

4.0

Overall Rating

The 2021 Honda Odyssey is available for sale at a base selling price of $31,790 and goes all the way to $47,820. Coming in with five trim configurations, the 2021 Honda Odyssey gets updates to the interior and exterior design in comparison to the outgoing 2020 model. More driver-assistance features are offered with the base LX trim too. However, the 2021 Odyssey still retains the 3.5L V6 motor, putting out 280 hp. This motor can do 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds and offers a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.

The 2021 Honda Odyssey surprised us by coming out with a sharper design without compromising on the form and functionality factor. Available for sale at an MSRP of $31,790 for the base LX trim and going all the way to $47,820 for the top of the line Elite trim, the 2021 Honda Odyssey also receives an updated interior and more standard driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking (for base LX trim). However, the 2021 Honda Odyssey still retains the same 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 motor putting out 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque and comes mated to a10-speed automatic and FWD drivetrain.

This 2021 iteration also preserves the eight exterior color palettes and dimensions of the outgoing 2020 Odyssey. Available at a monthly lease price of just $355 for a 36-month tenure with a down payment of $2,157, the 2021 Honda Odyssey is also quite competitively priced if you like to lease out your ride. Competing with the likes of the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica, 2021 Kia Sedona, and the 2021 Toyota Sienna, we will find out how well the 2021 Honda Odyssey stacks up against the rivals in this in-depth review, by looking at the performance, MPG, interior, exterior, and safety.

Of the five trims on offer with the 2021 Honda Odyssey, the 2021 Honda Odyssey EX-L trim turned out to be the most value for money offering of the lot due to the excellent list of interior and exterior features on offer as standard like the leather seats, extra USB ports for the rear-seat passengers, powered liftgate, and many more. Along with that, this trim also comes with all the bells and whistles in terms of driver-assistance features like automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

2021 Honda Odyssey Review

Pros

  • Flexible cargo compartment
  • Punchy V6 engine
  • Loaded with many interior features
  • Standard Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive features

Cons

  • Trims with 19" wheels are not as comfortable as the ones with 18" wheels
  • Rear seats are hard to remove

The 2021 Honda Odyssey is available for sale at a base selling price of $31,790 and goes all the way to $47,820. Coming in with five trim configurations, the 2021 Honda Odyssey gets updates to the interior and exterior design in comparison to the outgoing 2020 model. Pricing and Features
7.5/10

Prices for the 2021 Honda Odyssey will begin at $32,910, including the $1,120 destination and handling fee. - Carbuzz

The 2021 Honda Odyssey retains the same five trim configurations, namely LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite. Available for sale at a base selling price of $31,790, the 2021 Odyssey sees no changes in the mechanical front and hence retains the same 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 motor along with the same suspension, braking, and steering hardware of the outgoing 2020 moniker. However, this 2021 iteration manages to come with a slightly tweaked interior, a revamped front and rear fascia, and more standard driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection (for the base LX trim).

The higher trims also get 19" alloy wheels wrapped in 235/55R19 all-season tires, automatic LED headlights with integrated LED DRLs, front foglights, and a powered liftgate. The top of the line Elite trim gets a full-leather upholstery with contrastive stitching and piping. Apart from that, the 2021 Odyssey retains all the interior features like ambient LED lighting, heated, powered, and ventilated seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and an 8" touchscreen infotainment. A 550-watt 11-speaker audio system is on offer too.

Buying Advice
8.8/10

Of the five trims on offer with the 2021 Honda Odyssey, the 2021 Honda Odyssey EX-L trim turned out to be the most value for money offering of the lot due to the excellent list of interior and exterior features on offer as standard like the leather seats, extra USB ports for the rear-seat passengers, powered liftgate, and many more. Along with that, this trim also comes with all the bells and whistles in terms of driver-assistance features like automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2021 Odyssey maintains a soft ride which is often appreciated by minivan passengers. - Thecarconnection

The 2021 Honda Odyssey, which is available for sale at a base MSRP of $31,790, is powered by the same 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 motor that pumps out 280 hp and 262 lb-ft. This motor comes mated to a 10-speed torque converter automatic transmission with the shift by wire and paddle shifters. Multiple transmission modes are on offer too. However, the power is put down through the FWD drivetrain layout with no option for an AWD system. This minivan also offers a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.

The 2021 Honda Odyssey retains the impressive ride and handling of the outgoing 2020 model. Coming with a moderately stiff suspension setup, the 2021 Odyssey is a joy around the survey roads with sure-footed driving dynamics and direct steering. The ride quality is impressive too, absorbing all the bumps and potholes with ease. Even during high-speed highway driving, the ride is flat and composed. However, in comparison to the lower trims like EX and EX-L which come with 18" alloy wheels, the top-of-the-line Elite trim, which gets bigger 19" alloy wheels, felt a bit more choppy, especially during the slow speeds.

The 2021 Honda Odyssey manages to do the 0-60 mph acceleration test in just 6.5 seconds and the quarter-mile in an admirable 14.5 seconds. When going flat out, the 2021 Odyssey can also do a top speed of 110 MPH. Along with impressive acceleration figures on offer, Honda has also implemented excellent braking hardware with 12.6" front rotors and 13" rear rotors. As a result, this family van can do a 60-0 mph braking test in just 125 feet. Since all the trims of the 2021 Honda Odyssey get the same mechanicals, the acceleration and braking performance remains the same throughout the lineup.

The 2021 Honda Odyssey turned out to be the second most powerful offering of the segment, just behind the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica, which comes with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 motor putting out 287 hp. Fuel Economy
6.0/10

In our real-world highway testing, our test vehicle outperformed its EPA estimate, delivering 30 mpg. - Caranddriver

As the 3.5L V6 powertrain is carried over unchanged for 2021, the new 2021 Honda Odyssey returns the same gas mileage figures of 19 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway, both of which equates to combined gas mileage of 22 MPG. The 2021 Honda Odyssey also comes with variable cylinder management, which switches between the 3 and 6 cylinders, especially during the highway runs, helping to extract more miles per gallon.

Complementing the 2021 Honda Odyssey's impressive MPG figures is a fairly sized 19.5-gallon fuel tank that helps it churn out excellent tank range. The 2021 Honda Odyssey retains the same 370.5 miles of city range and 546 miles of highway range. A combined range of 429 miles is also one of the best in the family van segment. Dialing the transmission into ECON mode will further help to extract more miles before needing a refuel.

Interior
8.5/10

The 2021 Honda Odyssey is an 8-seater family van. Available for sale at a starting price of $31,790, the 2021 Odyssey comes with the standard black and beige color combination for all the trims. However, the top-of-the-line Elite trim comes with full leather upholstery with contrastive stitching and piping with this 2021 update. The heated and ventilated front seats are exceptionally padded, which helps in providing class-leading under-thigh and lower back support. The headroom and shoulder room are some of the best in the segment too.

The 2021 Honda Odyssey's rear seats also retain the impressive space and comfort of the front row. With headroom and shoulder room of 39.5" and 40.9", the 2021 Odyssey never poses a problem for the second-row occupants. Even though the 2021 Honda Odyssey is one of the most spacious and comfortable offerings of the segment, the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica manages to come out as a slightly better offering due to superior shoulder room and headroom for all three rows. The 2021 Toyota Sienna offers marginally better headroom and the 2021 Kia Sedona offered better legroom too. However, the 2021 Toyota Sienna offered the best-in-class cargo capacity of 39.1 cu ft, which is followed by the 2021 Honda Odyssey with 38.6 cu ft. All the 2021 Odyssey trims, except the base LX trim, comes with an 8" touchscreen infotainment system. The audio duties are taken by an 11-speaker audio system.

This Display Audio 8" touchscreen infotainment system comes with many connectivity features as standard like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi hotspot, and many more as standard. Along with that, we also loved the intuitive user interface and excellent display quality on offer. Large icons and impeccable touch sensitivity make it a boon to use. Exterior
8.0/10

The 2021 Odyssey doesn’t look that much different than the Pilot or other crossover SUVs. - Thecarconnection

The 2021 Honda Odyssey comes with an updated front view due to the inclusion of a revamped automatic LED headlights with integrated LED DRLs, a revised front grille, and a macho bumper with air dams. Being one of the longest offerings of the family van segment, coming in with a length of 203.2", the 2021 Honda Odyssey turned out to be quite a spacious van of the segment too, both in terms of the interior as well as cargo space. A low ground clearance of 4.5" makes it look like a low-slung sedan rather than a van when looked from the front. Neverthless, the 2021 Honda Odyssey is still one of the best-looking vans on sale in the United States.

Available in 8 different exterior colors, the 2021 Honda Odyssey also retains the elegant body line and fender flares of the outgoing 2020 model when looked at from the sides. The massive 19" alloy wheels wrapped in 235/55R19 all-season tires not only makes it look more sporty but also offer excellent handling too. However, the rear of the 2021 Odyssey gets subtle changes, especially to the rear-powered tailgate. Minor changes are also present in the rear bumper, making the 2021 Odyssey look more macho. In comparison to the rivals, the wheelbase of 118.1" of the 2021 Honda Odyssey is the lowest of the segment.

In comparison to the rivals of the segment, the 2021 Honda Odyssey is not the biggest when it comes to dimensions. Neverthless, the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica came out with the best in class length, width, and height. The ground clearance of 6.7" of the 2021 Kia Sedona is the highest, which is 2.2" higher than the 2021 Odyssey. However, the 2021 Toyota Sienna turned out to be the heaviest of the lot, which is 60 lbs more than the 2021 Odyssey. Some of the exterior features on offer with the 2021 Honda Odyssey has been mentioned below:

Safety
9.8/10

The base LX model receives the same standard driver-assistance features as the rest of the lineup. - Caranddriver

The 2021 Honda Odyssey comes with a 5-star overall crash safety rating in the NHTSA crash test, with a 5-star rating in the frontal crash test, a 5-star rating in the side crash test, and a 4-star rating in the rollover crash test. IIHS also gave it a good rating in all the subsections of the crash test, which helped the 2021 Odyssey to come out with a top safety pick + title.

The new 2021 Honda Odyssey now gets the Honda Sensing Safety and Driver assistive technology pack standard for all five trims. It gets many safety and driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control (ACC) with low-speed follow, CabinWatch, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, pre & post-collision safety system, etc. Some of the other features on offer are:

  • ABS with EBD
  • Driveline traction control
  • Stability control
  • Backup camera
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Side impact beams
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist

Competition

2021 Honda Odyssey Vs 2021 Chrysler Pacifica

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica is without a doubt, the best-looking minivan of the lot. Additionally, the brand has also announced that the 2021 model will be getting an AWD system. That being said, the 2021 Honda Odyssey impressed us with its decent reliability, performance, and spacious interior. Along with that, the 2021 Odyssey is also cheaper than the 2021 Pacifica by more than $3,500. Hence, the 2021 Pacifica is a good option with a fresh face and loads of features on offer, but we think that the 2021 Honda Odyssey is a tad bit better.

2021 Honda Odyssey Vs 2021 Toyota Sienna

When put against the others, the 2021 Toyota Sienna is the smallest minivan of the lot. While this helps it to be quite comfortable and maneuverable around the city streets, it misses out on its original purpose, hauling people and cargo. With mediocre performance on offer coupled with a soft suspension setup that results in high vertical movement on the highways, the 2021 Toyota Sienna is not the best offering if you want a comfortable and fun-to-drive minivan. Available for a base MSRP of $31,640, the 2021 Sienna also misses out on many interior and driver-assistance features for the base trims.

2021 Honda Odyssey Vs 2021 Kia Sedona

The 2021 Kia Sedona is one of the best-looking minivans of the lot. Based on the Kia Sorento platform, it seems like an elongated version of the mid-size crossover SUV. While it comes at a cheaper base selling price of $30,400, it is not without its caveats. The performance is subpar and the cabin is cramped, both of which spoils its purpose of providing for a wholesome minivan experience. The 0-60 mph time and gas mileage on offer are slightly poorer too, in comparison to the 2021 Odyssey. Hence, the 2021 Honda Odyssey will be our pick of the lot.

Final Verdict
8.7/10

The 2021 Honda Odyssey is one of the best propositions of the minivan segment due to the punchy V6 motor under the hood that can haul your entire family with ease, along with an interior that can comfortably seat 8 passengers with utmost comfort. Many interior and driver-assistance features are also offered as standard, both of which help it to be the ideal choice for large families. Hence, if you are looking for a minivan for your family, we would highly recommend you pick up the 2021 Honda Odyssey without giving it a second thought. However, do opt for the lower trims with 18" alloy wheels, as they are much more comfortable in comparison to the 19" wheels of the Touring and Elite trims.
