The 2021 Range Rover Velar is offered as a standalone variant called the Velar S. Of course, there are Velar R-Dynamic variants on offer as well, but they are reviewed separately. The 2021 Range Rover Velar S offers 2 engine options a base 2.0L inline-4 (P250) and a more powerful 3.0L Hybrid I-6 (P340). 

The prices of the 2021 Range Rover Velar starts from $56,900 for the base P250 variant and range up to $63,900 for the P340 trim. This is excluding a $1,050 destination fee which the Velar invites.

Since the 2021 Range Rover Velar is offered in a single trim, there's no real option of getting choosy here. Although, we suggest you go the extra mile and get the optional 3.0L Hybrid Inline-6 (P340) engine as the base 2.0L engine feels stressed when made to pull the Velar's heft. Apart from that, the Velar is pretty feature-loaded and packs all the bells and whistles you'd expect from an SUV of this segment.

The 2021 Range Rover Velar offers 2 engine options - a base 2.0L Turbo-4 (P250) and an all-new turbocharged-and-supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six that's assisted by a 48-volt hybrid system (P340). The P250 engine is good for 247 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque, whereas, the P340 powertrain belts out 340 hp and 480 lb-ft of peak torque. 

Both engines are mated to a slick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission and power is delivered to all wheels via a highly capable AWD drivetrain. The base P250 engine offers a towing capacity of 5,291 pounds whereas the P340 engine can tow up to 5,512 pounds. 

Land Rover claims that the 2021 Velar with its base 2.0L engine will be able to go from 0-60 MPH in 7.1 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 135 mph, which is decent for a turbo I-4. If you want more boost with your Velar, the new P340 powertrain will go from 0-60 in an impressive 6.0 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 149 mph. It’s also equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes with 13.8” rotors at the front and 12.8” rotors at the back, so braking should be pretty well-handled too.

Speaking of rivals, if you are looking for the most power, the BMW X5 with its 335 hp 3.0L twin-turbo I6 is your best bet, however, it also is the most expensive offering here. Meanwhile, the Porsche Macan exhibits the most athletic performance. On the contrary, the GLE 350's performance, just like the Velar is focused more on comfort and linear acceleration.

The Velar’s engine isn’t too power-hungry and as a result, doesn’t sip too much fuel. The MPG figures are quite decent actually, with a city/highway/combined driving of 21/27/23. These are with the base engine; bring in the more powerful P340 engine and the city/highway/combined mpg figures drop to 20/26/22. 

The 2021 Range Rover Velar's mpg figures are impressive, however, what spoils the game is its fuel tank capacity of 16.6 gallons. The Velar gets the smallest fuel tank in comparison to its rivals, offering a range of 381 miles in mixed driving conditions which is the lowest in this segment. 

All the rivals in this comparison are more or less in the same ballpark in terms of economy.  The BMW X5's mpg figures are similar to the Velar, however, where they do differ though, is the fuel tank capacity. The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 offers 22 mpg combined, but also offers the best range owing to the cavernous 22.5-gallon fuel tank.

The 2021 Range Rover Velar’s interior is masterfully crafted to please the eye more than anything. Sublime, sleek, and stylish; the dash is pretty modern, with no signs of aging and bold and linear lines adorning it. Two beautiful floating screens serve as the infotainment system and climate adjustment screen. Rich leather, premium accents can be found all around the cabin, with the higher trims benefitting from heated and power adjusted seats, heads-up display, seat massage, etc. The room is also plenty in the new Velar, with very decent spacing at both the front and rear row. 

The infotainment screen isn’t too far from the driver and all the dials and knobs are also conveniently placed for easy access. With the available air suspension with higher trims, the ride is all the more comfortable and convenient. Visibility is also pretty good. You also get quite extensive cargo storage of about 30.9 cu ft, and with the rear seats folded, you get a cavernous 80.2 cu ft of total storage. Overall, the spacious cabin and the posh appeal of the interior is quite an asset for the whole package that is offered with the new Velar. 

The new Range Rover Velar gets a much-awaited upgrade in form of the new Pivi Pro infotainment system. The two 10” floating screens look quite slick and futuristic, with the lower touchscreen mostly being used for adjusting climate controls. There’s also a 12.3” driver display for displaying information. This new Pivi Pro offers a much more responsive experience and comes with all the modern bells and whistles:

The 2021 Range Rover Velar gets a standard 12-speaker Meridien Sound System as standard that's an absolute treat for the audiophiles. The styling of the 2021 Velar is probably the best thing about it and also a fashion statement in a lot of ways. With an extremely stylish and eye-catching design, there’ll be hardly anyone who wouldn’t lay their eyes on the new Velar. The side is completely flush, with door handles popping out only when you need them to, the roof takes a gentle turn and fades above the rear fender. The blacked-out roof, especially a lot cooler. Typical modern Land Rover design is utilized, which infuses the theme of being boxy and curvy at the same time. 

The front sees the two stylishly curved LED headlights give away to the big grille, and flanked by two fender vent-like accents on either side. A panoramic sunroof is standard and the blacked-out roof and pillar further accentuate the style and appeal. The rear sees quad-exhaust nodes with aggressive-looking tail lights sandwiching the RANGE ROVER logo. Unfortunately, neither NHTSA nor IIHS have rated the Range Rover Velar for its safety ratings, probably due to it being a bit too expensive. But if history is to be believed, the way Land Rovers are built, they’re meant to last. Thus, the chassis should be quite strong on the Velar. It’s meant to be tough and the chassis doesn’t cave in.

Besides that, the Velar offers driver-assistance technologies such as automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control as standard which makes the Velar safer and way more convenient to drive. 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Velar vs 2021 BMW X5

The BMW X5 is the only offering in this comparison that offers a 6-cylinder engine. However, it also charges a premium for it with a price starting from $61,700. The BMW X5 is more powerful than the Range Rover Velar, is faster from 0-60, and definitely handles better. Moreover, the X5 also offers a more spacious interior and cargo area. However, the Velar gets a standard AWD drivetrain and makes up for a better road presence than the Bimmer.

The 2021 Porsche Macan comes at a starting price of $52,100 which is comparatively cheaper than the Range Rover Velar's price. The Porsche Macan's specs are pretty much similar to that of the Velar and it's more of a personal choice when it comes down to choosing between these two. However, while on one side the Macan is more athletic, the Velar feels much more luxurious and also offers better interior and cargo space.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350's price is pretty competitive to the Range Rover Velar's price. Both these SUVs offer similar engine output and performance. Both these SUVs are also inclined towards providing a more comfortable and plush ride rather than strong acceleration. The GLE350 offers better tech, safety features with more range with a posh interior whereas, the Velar subjectively looks better. 

The 2021 Range Rover Velar is undoubtedly one of the hottest-looking SUVs out there with all the major bells and whistles that you would expect from it, especially from the higher trims. Enshrined in luxury with a premium and futuristic interior, decent fuel economy, and range, with respectable performance, things are getting more exciting with the introduction of new hybrid powertrains, which will certainly attract more people and make the Velar much more competitive. Overall, the Velar is a pretty beautiful Land Rover, with only reliability being a huge question mark.
