2021 Lexus LX 570 Review

Pros

  • Truly capable off the road
  • Upstate and Spacious cabin
  • Tremendous repute for reliability

Cons

  • Tacky and dated infotainment system
  • High fuel consumption cost

The Lexus 570 has come a long way and rightfully so. With one of the most instantly gratifying grille to feature in any car (aside from the tropical topic, BMW X7) and an interior that has all the bells and whistles to never want to leave. Toyota’s luxurious division, Lexus has perfected the Land Cruiser on which the LX 570 sits on. This further gives this luxury SUV that structure to trade and find a way out from any terrain in this world.

Overview

The 2021 Lexus LX 570 gets a handful of updates for the new model year. The most prominent change comes in the form of a new limited-production LX Inspiration Series that adds a blacked-out exterior, black badging, 21-inch black alloy wheels, and semi-aniline leather upholstery with Rioja Red accents. The 2021 LX 570 Sport Package also gets updates like 3 unique color options and distinguished exterior styling. To end with, the infotainment system gains Amazon Alexa compatibility to improve connectivity.

This full-size SUV from Lexus continues to be offered in 2 styles - two-row and three-row. Both the styles are identical to each other and only differ on the basis of seating capacity. Speaking of prices, the 2021 Lexus LX 570 starts from $86,830 for the two-row variant and ranges up to $91,830 for the three-row variant. The limited-run 2021 LX Inspiration Series, of which only 500 units will be sold exclusively in the three-row configuration, comes at a price of $99,310. These are excluding a $1,295 destination fee which all models of the LX invite. The average lease payment for a Lexus LX 570 is $1,303/month, for 36 months, with a down payment of $2,000.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The two-row and three-row styles of the LX 570 full-size SUV are identical to each other in every aspect, except for the seating capacity. Buyers get the same features and package options on both, with no discrimination whatsoever. Furthermore, a limited-edition 2021 Lexus LX Inspiration Series variant is also available for 2021.

It is based on the three-row variant and adds Black Onyx or White Pearl exterior paint, semi-aniline leather upholstery with Roja Red accents, and 21-inch blacked-out alloy wheels, etc. The two-row 2021 Lexus LX 570 starts from an MSRP of $86,830 while the LX Inspiration Series costs over $100,000 with the destination charges. If that kind of price tag is not enough, Lexus offers a number of additional packages for the LX that further pimp up the ride.

Buying Advice

The only choice you have to make is between the two and three-row variants. We would recommend the three-row variant. Having a couple of extra seats is never a bad idea, as the features and comfort of both variants are similar. Also, the cargo space is not compromised for the extra seats, thanks to the foldable rear seats. However, if budget is not a constraint, you can also consider the LX Inspiration Series as it adds some serious on-road presence and interior features to your full-size Lexus SUV.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

Get the LX up to speed on the highway and the lack of steering feel creates a busy drive; small corrections to keep the vehicle on a straight path are frequent. - Car And Driver

The LX 570 carries on with the same 5.7L naturally aspirated V8 engine that belts out 383 hp and 403 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission that puts down the power through a standard 4WD drivetrain.

For its size, the SUV possesses supreme off-roading prowess but lacks the same in on-road manners. The SUV is tall and bulky and exhibits extreme body roll when pushed around a corner at higher speeds. The steering is hefty and the huge dimensions make tip-toeing through the traffic a task.

Speaking of capabilities, the Lexus LX can go from 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 137 mph. Considering the hefty weight of the LX, the acceleration figures are decent enough. Further, the full-size SUV also offers a maximum towing capacity of 7000 lbs. For braking, there are 13.9-inch brake rotors, along with 4-wheel power-assisted discs having sensors to provide more power to the brakes when required.

Speaking of rivals, when it comes to brute power, the Lincoln Navigator's 450 hp 3.5L twin-turbo V6 leads all rivals. The Navigator is also the fastest SUV here, with a 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 157 mph. The Infiniti QX80 slots in the second spot with 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. The Toyota Land Cruiser's power figures slot it in the lower half with just 381 hp and 401 lb-ft torque.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The LX 570 is many things but definitely not an economical ride. The 5.7L naturally aspirated V8 mill is a serious fuel-chugger. This allows the full-size SUV to roll for 12 miles in the city or 16 miles on the highway for every gallon of gas. Sum it up, and the 2021 Lexus LX 570 is good for a combined 14 mpg.

Thankfully, there's a cavernous 24.6-gallon fuel tank. But even then, due to the extremely low mpg figures, the SUV does not return a favorable range that most families would prefer. The SUV is capable of offering a maximum range of 344 miles in mixed driving conditions.

All the rivals in this class are more or less in the same ballpark in terms of economy. The 2021 Navigator's mpg figures lead the chart, credits to its smaller 3.5L engine. The Infiniti QX80 slots in the second spot with 16 mpg combined. The Land Cruiser is slightly more efficient than the Lexus LX 570, thereby offering slightly better city/highway mpg ratings.

Interior
7.0/10

The ride is truck-like. Lexus' suspension takes the sharp edges off bumps big and small, but you still feel every road imperfection. - Edmunds

The interior of the 2021 Lexus LX 570  is one of the best in its segments and quite often compared to that of a Land Rover. Having the most spacious and luxury cabins, this is a perfect SUV for a big family. As mentioned before, the LX 570 is available in two-row and three-row variants. So the maximum passenger capacity is 8, but more children could be seated due to the massive size of the rear seats.

Most of the interior is made of high-quality leather, and the build quality gives a luxurious feel to the cabin. The driver's seat gets 14-way power adjusting while the front passengers would be happy with 12-way. Features like heated wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel, ambient lighting, four-zone climate control, Lexus memory system, cool box, and many more are standard for all the buyers. There is so much luxury and comfort that’ll make you dream about this SUV. More leather and additional features could be added through the Luxury package.

Speaking of practicality, the LX 570 SUV offers a cargo capacity of 16.3 cubic feet behind its third row. However, the area can be expanded up to a maximum of 79.7 cubic feet on folding down the second-row seats. A power-operated liftgate is available for easy loading of cargo as well. With the second-row folded down, the LX 570 can easily stow up to 29 cases.

The infotainment setup of the Lexus LX 570, however, is not everyone’s choice. Though having all the connectivity and entertainment features like Sirius XM, Radio, Bluetooth, etc., the user interface seems to be quite impractical due to the joystick and remote controller placed alongside the gear shifter. It seems to be sluggish and quite difficult to control for some users.

Thankfully, Lexus's Enform interface is well-designed and seen through the 12.3-inch infotainment screen along with a split-screen. But again, the LX does not offer Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or Wi-Fi Hotspot, which is weird considering it is one of Lexus's flagship models. Hence, Amazon Alexa compatibility has been added to improve connectivity for now.

Some of the most prominent interior and infotainment features of the 2021 LX 570 are:

  • 14-way driver and 12-way front passenger power-adjustable seats
  • Perforated leather interiors
  • Leather-wrapped seats
  • 28 Air vents inside the cabin
  • Four Zone climate control with air filtration
  • Heated wood and leather steering wheel
  • Power open-close rear door
  • Dark mocha and linear espresso wood interior
  • Memory seats, mirror, and steering settings
  • Lexus Enform interface
  • 12.3-inch infotainment screen
  • Split-screen operation
  • Joystick and remote operated Infotainment

Exterior
6.0/10

By most measures, no, the LX 570 is not particularly distinguished. It’s a really-big-box SUV, relatively unchanged for a decade or more. But it’s bold in its details. - The Car Connection

The Lexus LX 570's size is the first thing that people notice, but the metallic color, chrome usage, and clever styling give it an even more aggressive look. It surely does not look like a typical SUV and tries to show off its power and luxury through its exterior.

Up front, Lexus's trademark light-bold headlights extend to the spindle-shaped front grille having a chrome finish while the sides are designed cleverly to improve the aerodynamics. Its design follows the conventional big and boxy character of an SUV. Though the SUV has remained mostly unchanged for the last decade, it still commands a serious road presence due to its bold stature and fine details.

Further, the all-new 2021 LX Inspiration Series further ups the ante with a blacked-out exterior treatment, smoked lenses for exterior lights, black badging, and 21-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels finished in black. Among rivals, the extra 10-inch length of the Lincoln Navigator explains its bigger truck-like size. The Lexus LX 570 and Land Cruiser's dimensions are identical as both these SUVs share the same body-on-frame chassis.

Some of the most notable exterior features of the 2021 Lexus LX 570 are:

  • Illuminated running boards.
  • Projector door lamps
  • Electrochromic outside mirrors with auto tilt down on reverse function.
  • Power-operated rear door with keyless access.
  • Roof rails

Safety
8.0/10

The 2021 Lexus LX 570 has not yet been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS. That being said, being the last body-on-frame style construction SUV with a live axle, it is built like a tank to withstand even the roughest of situations with ease. It gets a wide array of standard safety and driver-assist features as standard.

Some of the most prominent safety features of the 2021 Lexus LX 570 are:

  • Lexus Enform safety connect.
  • Crawl control with turn assist
  • Triple beam Intelligent headlamps
  • Hill-start assist control
  • Trailer sway control
  • 4 wheel drive with active traction control
  • Intelligent 10-airbag system
  • Vehicle stability control

Competition
6.0/10

2021 Lexus LX 570 vs 2021 Lincoln Navigator

Lincoln Navigator is the toughest rival for the Lexus LX due to its high-performance figures, colossal cabin and cargo space, and ground clearance for a better off-roading experience. Even the mileage of the Navigator is best amongst its rivals and has the lowest price tag. On the other hand, Lexus offers one of the most luxurious cabins in this class, with a performance close to that of the Navigator and the highest reliability ratings.

2021 Lexus LX 570 vs. 2021 Infiniti QX 80

The performance of the Infiniti QX80 is quite close to the Lexus, but the miles per dollar cost is slightly higher for the Infiniti’s SUV. The mileage of both the rivals is also comparable, but the QX80 offers a better range. In spite of this, the Lexus LX would be a better choice as it offers better performance figures, world-class interiors and the few extra dollars spent on it would be certainly justified.

Final Verdict

The Lexus LX 570 is an orthodox SUV that offers extreme levels of spaciousness, practicality, and features. However, there are also some trade-offs, which include the poor fuel economy and just decent performance. Though there are rivals that offer a lot more than the LX 570, and that too at a lesser price, but what sets this SUV from Lexus apart is its tank-like build quality and bullet-proof reliability.
