Although the S trim makes sense as a cheap work truck, the Pro-4X off-roader looks the part and has all the equipment to back it up- Kelly Blue Book
The 2021 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is available in three trims namely S, SV, and PRO-4X. The S trim has a selling price of $28,200 and it ranges up to $37,790 for the top-spec PRO-4X trim. These prices exclude a destination fee of $1,150. Except for this trim, the remaining models come in both RWD and 4WD drivetrains. The 2021 Frontier offers very limited features in its segment. Starting from the exterior, the 2021 Frontier gets only one wheel option which is 16-inch wheels.
The 2021 Frontier also receives the choice of two cargo beds a 5-foot and a 6.1-foot. Moving to the interior, the 2021 Frontier lags in the technology department, especially the S and SV trims. The V6 is responsive, and the extra power is noticeable, letting the Frontier accelerate comfortably and quickly- Autoblog
The 2021 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is powered by a 3.8L V6 engine which makes 310 hp and 281 lb-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox, which has a marked development in performance over the manual or 5-speed automatic offered in the older variant. The truck is offered in an RWD drivetrain as standard and can be upgraded to a 4WD setup if desired. A total towing capacity of 6,500 pounds is offered in the 2021 Frontier.
Nissans are known to have a rather comfortable ride and a light steering to make even larger cars seem effortless to drive. The 2021 Frontier follows the same principles but its steering has a wider turning radius, which can be challenging while parking. The 2021 Frontier offers balanced handling around the corners while the body roll is also controlled very well. On the off-road, the soft steering makes the car highly maneuverable and can isolate out shocks from the terrain.
The 2021 Frontier is not generally outfitted to show outstanding acceleration. It does however manage to accelerate pretty well, particularly considering the weight. It takes 7.2 seconds to cover the 0-60 MPH sprint and further, completes a quarter of a mile in about 15.6 seconds. The top speed can range up to 120 MPH. Talking about the brakes, the 2021 Frontier gets ventilated dis brakes on all four wheels. In the brake test, this truck took 135 feet to halt from 60-0 MPH.

The Chevy Colorado is the quicker contender to reach 60 MPH. Although housing a small engine that makes the least power, the Ford Ranger takes the same time as the Toyota Tacoma to complete the 0-60 MPH test. However, the latter loses to the Frontier in the quarter-mile run. It is also worth noting that the Ranger is the only truck here with a four-cylinder engine while the other contenders boast a six-cylinder engine.
The V6 returns respectable gas-mileage figures than the old powertrain- Carbuzz
This new V6 engine has better MPG figures than the previous engine it had. The 9-speed gearbox was expected to show better figures as compared to the older transmission, however, it has a similar efficiency. The EPA-rated figures are 18 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on a highway, and 20 MPG combined. Opting for the 4WD drops down the economy by 1 MPG.
The 2021 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab has competitive mileage, considering it has a thirsty engine. It however possesses a rather measly range which does not contribute much towards making it stand out in the competition. Owing to its 21.1-gallon fuel tank, the 2021 Frontier can drive up to 443 miles in mixed proportion and 422 miles for 4WD models.

Thanks to its large fuel tank, the Toyota Tacoma offers the best driving range in this competition. But the Ford Ranger gets all the praises for being the most fuel-efficient truck. The Chevrolet Colorado has the second-best efficiency in this competition a and despite housing a small tank, its driving range is almost similar to the Tacoma. Meanwhile, the Frontier stands in the last place.
The Frontier's interior is still the most dated in the segment and offers an old design with few creature comforts- Cars.com
The interior layout of the 2021 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab looks dated and obsolete. The quality of the materials used is also not good. Since this is a Crew Cab, it seats up to five people. All the models get cloth upholstery as standard. The front seats are alright in terms of comfort but they don't offer much adjustability like other rivals. The steering wheel is only tilt-adjustable but the seats are positioned correctly so that the driver can find a good driving position.
The front row is the best place for six-footers as it hosts enough passenger space. However, the rear seats aren't that spacious although this is a Crew Cab. The legroom is considerably less while headroom is good. Adults can be seated at the back for short drives. The Crew Cab also gets the option of a 5-foot and a 6-1 foot cargo bed. the short bed offers a cargo volume of 27.1 cu-ft. while the longer bed expands that to 33.5 cu-ft.

Without a doubt, the Chevrolet Colorado has the most spacious cabin and class-leading cargo capacity in this segment. The closest to it is the Ford Ranger with good rear-seat space. The Toyota Tacoma offers the least rear legroom in this competition. In today's generation where technology is leading in every vehicle, this concept is missing in the 2021 Frontier. The S and SV trims get a 7-inch screen that just supports Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, satellite radio, and MP3 capability through an audio jack.
The top-end PRO-4X trim gets a smaller 5.8-inch screen that comes with a navigation system with voice recognition, SiriusXM, Travel Link, and satellite radio. A 6-speaker stereo is only available on the lower trims but two more speakers can be added in the SV trim. The PRO-4X upgrades this setup to a 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system. Features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are missing in the 2021 Frontier. Although the interface is outdated, it is simple to use. Some of the other features of the Frontier's cabin are:
As the originator of the compact pickup class, Nissan knows how to build a decent-looking small pickup- Carbuzz
Nothing has really changed for the 2021 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab in terms of exterior styling. According to Nissan, this is the last model year of the second generation. It is going to get a complete redesign for the next model year. Upfront, you get only halogen headlamps, there is no option of LED headlights while the fog lamps are also available, except on the base model. The S and SV models have a ground clearance of 8.6 inches but the Pro-4X sits 10.1 inches above the ground, which is perfect for off-roading purposes.
Unlike its rivals, there are no turn signals in the mirrors or fancy door handles on the 2021 Frontier. Nissan keeps things pretty much simple. The 2021 Frontier sits on 16-wheels but they are steel on the S trim and alloys on the other two trims. The 2021 Frontier comes with a 5-foot or 6.1-foot cargo bed. When equipped with a short bed, its overall length measures 205.5 inches, making it the shortest truck in the segment. You don't get a smart or automatic tailgate like its rivals, you have to manually open or close the tailgate.

Being a capable off-roader, the Toyota Tacoma has the highest ground clearance with 0.8 inches more than the Frontier. Its wheelbase is also the longest as it is only available with a long bed. Otherwise, in normal form, the Chevy Colorado has the widest wheelbase which speaks for its spacious cabin. At 4,232 pounds, the Ford Ranger is the lightest truck here which further helps to perform well on the road. Some other exterior features are:
The 2021 Frontier is completely devoid of the driver-assistance technology common on most new vehicles- CarAndDriver
Only IIHS has rated the 2021 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab while the NHTSA neglected to conduct crash tests on the vehicle. It received a 'Good' rating in three different crash tests, a second-lowest 'Marginal' rating for the front overlap test, and a second-highest 'Acceptable' rating for its head and seat restraints. Compared to its rivals, the 2021 Frontier doesn't have the best safety ratings.
Unlike its rivals, Nissan has not loaded any of the latest driver assistance systems in the 2021 Frontier. You get only the basic safety features in this truck, which is the main downgrade area. Also, only six airbags are provided which is kind of disappointing as for a truck that misses safety technologies, at least eight airbags should be have been there. Some of the safety features available in the 2021 Frontier are:
The Toyota Tacoma Double Cab is the most expensive truck with a starting price of $32,665. It makes 32 hp less but its acceleration is quicker than the Frontier. But both trucks share the same towing capacity. In terms of fuel economy, both the trucks have similar MPG figures. Even the interior dimensions of both trucks are almost the same but when it comes to standard comfort and technological features, the Tacoma is way better. It also flaunts better safety ratings and driver-assist systems than the Frontier.
The Ford Ranger Crew Cab is slightly cheaper than the Frontier and is the only truck with a four-cylinder engine. It makes 40 hp less than the Frontier and yet, its acceleration is better. Also, its tow ratings are also better. The Ranger is also the most fuel-efficient truck in this competition. Moving to the interior, the Ranger's interior room is almost similar to the Frontier but its cargo capacity is good. Coming to safety, the Ranger is a safer option as it packs more safety features than the Frontier.
The Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab almost makes the same power as the Frontier, the Colorado has the quickest acceleration and better towing capacity. It has a smaller fuel tank than the Frontier and yet, has a better driving range thanks to its good fuel efficiency. The main highlight of this truck is its spacious cabin and class-leading cargo capacity. Moreover, the Colorado offers more comfort and tech features for its price than the Frontier. It is also ahead in terms of safety with better safety technologies and ratings.
The 2021 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab has a long-lasting punchy V6 engine made with Japanese reliability. But, it sure is outdated in terms of technology and safety in its class. Several other rivals are available in the same price range as the Frontier with better standard features, a long list of driver assistance features, and good towing capacity. Therefore, it is better if you skip this truck and look out for the Ford Ranger or the Chevy Colorado.
