About 2021 Nissan Maxima

3.8

Overall Rating

The 2021 Nissan Maxima remains the same spec-wise but sees reshuffling in the trim levels. The S and SL trims have been dropped, and it is available for sale in 4 trims, SV, SR, Platinum, and a new 40th Anniversary edition trim. Priced between $36,990 and $44,345, it packs a feature-rich interior and an aggressive and stylish exterior. It is powered by a 300 hp 3.5L V6 that helps the 2021 Maxima to go from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Released in late 2020, it can be purchased in 8 colors.

The 2021 Nissan Maxima continues with its "four-door sports car" tag in what could be the last model of this generation. Available for sale with a starting price of $36,990, the trim lineup has been altered heavily with Nissan dropping the S and SL trims. Along with the standard SV, SR, and Platinum trims, a new 40th Anniversary Edition trim joins with an MSRP of $44,345. Mostly an aesthetic upgrade based on the Platinum trim, it is also powered by the same 300 hp 3.5L V6 as the other trims. And thanks to this powerhouse, this 36 grand "sports car" slithers from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

While the Maxima moniker has proven to be reliable over the years, buying and maintaining a new one is just not everyone's cup of tea. That is why a very viable option is buying a used Nissan Maxima on sale with deals starting as low as $3,000 on CarIndigo itself. But if you want, you can also lease it out. After a downpayment of $4,079, the lease price stands at $349/month for 36 months with a 12,000-mile limit. Being the flagship full-size sedan from Nissan, the 2021 Maxima competes against the Chrysler 300, and the Toyota Avalon.

The chances are that if you're looking at the Maxima, you want something that rides and handles like a sports car. In that case, we would suggest the SR. It comes with retuned suspension dampers, stiffer springs, and a larger front stabilizer bar to optimize the car's handling ability. It also has paddle shifters to give some control of the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) back to the driver.

2021 Nissan Maxima Review

Pros

  • A long list of features

  • Great safety score

  • Firmer than expected ride quality
  • Subpar trunk capacity

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The Maxima is a good car, but its high price tag makes it tough to recommend.- Cars.USNews

The 2021 Nissan Maxima has skimmed down the trim levels this year by dropping the S, and SL trims from last year. However, a new 40th Anniversary Edition trim joins the lineup. So, you get 4 trims now- SV, SR, Platinum, and 40th Anniversary Edition. The prices start from $36,990 from the SV trim and climb more than 7 grand at $44,345 for the new flagship 40th Anniversary Edition trim.

The SR trim priced at $42,150 and Platinum with an MSRP of $42,220 are the middle tier options. With just $70 between them, the choice dwindles between luxury and sportiness depending on your preference. All the trims come with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED Headlamps, Nissan Safety Shield 360, and the 8-inch touchscreen as standard fitment now.

Buying Advice

In the case of the 2021 Nissan Maxima, we would suggest the SR trim as the one to buy. It comes with retuned suspension dampers, stiffer springs, and a larger front stabilizer bar to optimize the car's handling ability. It also has paddle shifters to help you get that "sporty feel". But if you want some exclusivity, then the 40th Anniversary trim should be the one to pick up since it strikes the right chord with darkened accents that complement the aggressive design of the saloon.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The 2021 Maxima is great on a road trip, and the standard V-6 is smooth and powerful.- MotorTrend

The 2021 Nissan Maxima is fastened with a 3.5L Naturally Aspirated V6 as its heart. It is paired up with a quick-shifting CVT; the engine produces 300 hp and 261 pound-feet of torque. Although the CVT struggles to tap the full potential of the engine, Nissan still had done an excellent setup to direct a natural gear shifting. This ensures a steady as well as a smooth rise in pace without any significant trouble.

The CVT drops down gear very placidly, providing you enough torque even for the low speed and great fuel economy. However, this might not be the wisest transmission choice in a car that claims to be sporty. Since Nissan has marketed the Maxima as a "sport sedan", the exclusion of a manual transmission at the 40 grand price tag feels like a glaring omission considering its target audience would have appreciated a proper stick shift.

Despite all odds, and even with a CVT, the 2021 Maxima sprints from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The Maxima shows little body lean in aggressive cornering maneuvers, but never feels like it will topple over. The agility rises as the speed increases, and hence the braking also improves. When the push comes to shove, the saloon can brake from 60-0 mph in a stopping distance of 113 feet, which is respectable enough.

When compared to the rivals, the Toyota Avalon is just 1 hp more powerful than the Nissan Maxima. The Chrysler 300 is closely powered as well but is underpowered as compared to the Japs. However, that 1 hp does not hold up in the 0-60 mph run where the Nissan Maxima takes the lead over the Toyota Avalon by three-tenths of a second. The Chrysler 300 is behind both due to its obviously lower power figures.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

It’s on the low end of average, for its size.- The Car Connection

Since the 2021 Nissan Maxima comes with a naturally aspirated V6 under the hood, you might be thinking that it's an all-out gas guzzler. Though that is true to an extent, it offers decent MPG figures to make good on its promise to be a family sedan with a sporty side. For the 40 grand you spend on it, you get 20 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, which translates to 24 MPG combined.

This comes hooked up to an amply sized fuel tank of 18-gallons. So, after a full refueling stop, you get an overall combined range of 432 miles. At its best on purely the highway drive, you can get up to 540 miles on a full tank. So, even in direst circumstances, you can go from Miami to Jacksonville in just fuel stop at either terminus.

Among the competitors, the Toyota Avalon just keeps making the case as the value for money option with the best MPG figures. The Nissan Maxima is behind by 2 MPG in all regards. The Chrysler 300 is actually short 1 MPG in the city in order to dethrone the Maxima from second place. But until it becomes more fuel-efficient, the Chrysler 300 sits in third place.

Interior
7.0/10

An ergonomically friendly interior that includes large and clearly marked buttons.- Motor1

Step into the cabin of the 2021 Nissan Maxima, and you will find ample seating for 5 people. The well-executed cabin is full of soft-touch materials, simple controls, and tons of high-end features. The D-shaped steering wheel strikes a sporty edge and is supported by the digital driver display and the multifunction buttons adorning it. If you upgrade to the 40th Anniversary Edition trim, the cabin will also adorn dual-tone leather upholstery. In the lower trims, hard plastics, and cloth or leather upholstery is standard fitment.

Thanks to the Nissan zero-gravity seats, which are very well contoured with upper thigh support and equipped with large bolsters for longer rides. Front passengers get decent headroom, but intrusions in the footwells and high armrests make things feel cramped. Rear passengers endure even less legroom and headroom. And getting in and out of the Maxima, particularly for those in the rear seat, is slightly harder than usual. Another quirk is that there is lots of room in the front, while the rear is slightly on the shorter side.

With only 14.3 cu-ft. at the back, the Maxima offers the least trunk space in the segment. Be that as it may, the Maxima has enough character to make you disregard its minor weaknesses. Compared to the others, the Toyota Avalon offers the best space in the back followed by the Chrysler 300. In terms of keeping you entertained, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard across the Maxima range. Every trim beside the SV is fitted with an 11-speaker Bose Premium Surround Sound audio system.

Base-level functionalities include full smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth audio streaming with hands-free phone functionality, and voice-recognition commands. Though the system is crisp and simple, it does seem dated a lot of times. The following are the highlight features of the interior and infotainment system of the 2021 Nissan Maxima:

  • 7" Advanced Drive-Assist Display
  • Power adjustable front seats with heating
  • Memory system for front seats and steering wheel
  • Multifunction D-shaped steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment
  • Leather upholstery on seats and steering wheel
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control with rear vents

Exterior
6.9/10

The Nissan Maxima is not subtle by any means, but the bold shape works well.- The Car Connection

The 2021 Maxima is a carryover model from last year, and hence all the design cues on the standard trims remain the same. You get an aggressive LED design in the front that is supported by the quintessential Nissan V-motion grille which adds edginess. The long hood is contoured perfectly to grant that "sporty-suave" look. And the wheel arches add the missing note of spice that some might have found missing. There are 8 colors on offer, so you can get one to complement a specific attribute of the design as well.

Move to the side, and the 18-inch wheels come into perfect display. The "Floating-Roof" design is also very evident in this silhouette. At the back, the outlook remains the same with quad exhausts and the sleek and stylish LED Taillights. If you spring for the 40th Anniversary Edition, the extra cash you spend on it does get you aesthetic upgrades. With this trim, the chrome elements are replaced by blacked-out elements and 19-inch wheels are in place which takes the design from 8 to 11.5.

When pitted against rivals, the Nissan Maxima stands apart from the group with its one of a kind styling. It is also the lightest in the lineup even if by just 8 lbs. The Chrysler 300 packs the most heft, but that is understandable since it is also the longest and widest one here. The Toyota Avalon sits in the middle with its dimensions. Some of the notable features of the exterior of the 2021 Nissan Maxima are:

  • 18-inch/19-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires
  • Chrome grille, side vents, and door handles
  • LED Headlamps and LED DRLs
  • LED Taillights
  • Quad exhausts
  • Rain-sensing intermittent windshield wipers
  • Power-operated side mirrors with heating and memory
  • LED Turn indicators in side mirrors
  • Floating Roof design

Safety
9.9/10

The safety of the Maxima is largely down to loads of safety equipment fitted right from the base level SV trim.- CarBuzz

Nissan has time and again proven that it is not one to be trifled with in terms of safety and reliability. The 2021 Maxima is just another example of the same. For the 36 grand price tag it asks to get the ball rolling, you get the Nissan Intelligent Mobility and Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard. Furthermore, the NHTSA has granted the 2021 Nissan Maxima a perfect 5-star safety rating in the crash tests conducted.

The IIHS has fully assessed the 2020 Maxima, awarding it as a 2020 Top Safety Pick+ with specific optional headlights, scoring it top marks in almost every evaluation. The 2021 Maxima does not have the same award but packs the same safety tech though seeing as its a carryover model. Some of the noteworthy safety features offered with the 2021 Nissan Maxima include:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Nissan Advanced Air Bag System
  • Rollover Sensor for Airbag deployment
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with Easy-Fill Tire Alert

Competition
6.0/10

2021 Nissan Maxima vs. 2021 Toyota Avalon

The 2021 Toyota Avalon stands in the vanguard of reliable full-size family sedans. Priced perfectly, the saloon packs an expansive interior with a decently sized cargo-space. It is also the most powerful and only marginally (literally) more powerful than the Nissan. That being said, the MPG figures are better, and the overall driving experience is also the one to beat. Hence, if you want a true upgrade for the money you are spending on buying a car, then the 2021 Toyota Avalon is the one.

2021 Nissan Maxima vs. 2021 Chrysler 300

The 2021 Chrysler 300 remains the luxury and long sedan that it has been known to be. The biggest one here dimensionally, it offers a bigger cabin than the Maxima along with the most spacious cargo-space in the back. Having remained the same for a decade now, the Chrysler 300 definitely seems to be aging but still manages to give the Nissan a run for its money. That being said, besides the interior, there is nothing that works in the Chrysler 300's favor and hence the 2021 Nissan Maxima is the better one here.

A sporty car that will satiate the revv-heads among you, it is also a hard and fast family vehicle.
