About 2021 Nissan Versa

3.8

Overall Rating

The 2021 Nissan Versa is available for sale with the same specs as 2020 and a $100 increase in the price. Offered in 3 trims-S, SV, and SR, the MSRP starts from $14,930. The interior is feature-packed while the exterior offers a choice between 8 colors. Under the hood is a 122 hp fuel-efficient 1.6L I-4 that can offer up to 35 MPG with the CVT. The Nissan Versa Note from the previous generation has been discontinued the debut of the new generation in 2020.

Starting at just $14,930, the 2021 Nissan Versa is one of the most affordable new cars that you can buy in the market right now. The Versa is currently sold in 3 trims only- S, SV, and SR, all the trims get powered by a 122 hp 1.6L I-4 engine, that moves the front wheels. Nissan had introduced 8 new colors last year along with a redesign that continues for 2021.

The interior is laden with hard plastics and cloth upholstery in all trims to suit the pocket-friendly price it asks. Buying a used Versa might be a good deal for many buyers, but that would not assure the latest tech since all are mostly previous-gen models. However, leasing is a viable option where you will just have to pay $228/month for 36 months at 0% APR. As is, the 2021 Nissan Versa competes with other budget sedans like the Hyundai Accent and the Kia Rio.

Though the 2021 Nissan Versa is a pocket-friendly ride, we would recommend you to splurge and get the SR trim for $18,340. The trim is less than 2 grand pricey than the base S trim with the same tranny. Furthermore, it offers all the best features of the moniker like leather and Prima-Tex upholstery and the bigger wheels as standard fitment. However, if that seems too steep, you can always fall back on the SV trim priced at $17,740.

2021 Nissan Versa Review

Pros

  • Value for money due to long feature list
  • Spacious trunk
  • Good fuel economy
  • User-friendly technology

Cons

  • Not so fun to drive due to slow acceleration
  • Rivals offer better ride quality and comfort

The 2021 Nissan Versa is available for sale with the same specs as 2020 and a $100 increase in the price. Offered in 3 trims-S, SV, and SR, the MSRP starts from $14,930. Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The Versa’s starting price of $16,600 with an automatic transmission is one of the lowest prices of any new car available.-Cars.USNews

The 2021 Nissan Versa serves as the entry-level sedan from the automaker, and hence the prices and build reflect just that. It is offered in 3 trim levels namely, S, SV, and SR. The offer prices have been increased by $100 across the entire trim and now begin from $14,930. The S trim comes with barebones of features and is the only one that offers a manual transmission along with the 1.6L I-4 engine that is standard across all the trims.

Opt for the CVT in the S trim, and the MSRP will stand at $16,600. The SV trim takes things forward by adding more features like 16-inch alloy wheels, an 7-inch touchscreen infotainment for a sticker price of $17,740. The SR trim stands as the flagship offering at $18,340 and gets the best features like the 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, LED headlights with signature LED DRLs, among others.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

Nissan's least expensive sedan rides well, adeptly absorbing road imperfections and harsh impacts.-MotorTrend

Powering up the 2021 Nissan Versa is a 1.6L naturally aspirated inline-4 banger engine. This unit can churn out 122 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque at its best. Depending on the trim and the money you are willing to shell out the transmission changes. At the lowest price bracket of 14 grand, a 5-speed manual transmission is offered only in the S trim. However, the fuel-efficient CVT can also be had for $16,600 in the S trim. The upper trims, SV and SR, come with the CVT as standard fitment.

While it may not look like it, but the 2020 Nissan Versa was the top-selling sedan in its segment. This is because of a decent driving experience, spectacular MPG figures (with the CVT), and a very cheap price tag backed by a cost-effective ownership experience. The engine remains smooth in the city but runs out of juice if pushed too much on the highway. Even with the stick shift, revv heads will not find that adrenaline climbing up your spine. Overall, the 2021 Versa is made to be a family-friendly city driver.

Spending 14 grand on a car and expecting mind-numbing 0-60 mph figures is like a teacher letting a kid have fun in detention. Both of these things are not going to happen. The 2021 Nissan Versa can go from 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds while the quarter-mile takes 17.4 seconds. The brakes are also decent enough and are handy enough to control everything that you can throw at the 2021 Versa. When the push comes to shove, the 2021 Nissan Versa can brake from 60-0 mph in a stopping distance of 124 feet.

Asian automakers largely dominate the pocket-friendly sedan segment, and the Nissan Versa’s nemesis is the Kia Rio, and the Hyundai Accent. The Versa has the best power figures in the competition but has the worst 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times. It is the Kia Rio that boasts the highest torque numbers in the competition along with the best 0-60 mph time. The Hyundai Accent is the corporate cousin to the Rio but has lesser torque than both of the adversaries. Hence, it is slightly slower than the Kia in both the acceleration events.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

While every model in the Nissan Versa range gets the same four-cylinder engine, the transmission decides the fuel economy.-CarBuzz

Most people who would be buying cars in this segment would want a fuel-efficient car. The 2021 Nissan Versa doesn’t disappoint in this regard with its decent MPG figures. The MPG figures depend largely on the transmission choice. Pick up the stick shift manual in the base S trim, and you will get 27 MPG in the city, 35 MPG on the highway, and 30 MPG combined. For a cost-effective ride, fuel costs will surely run high with the stick.

However, this changes if you pick up the CVT that is made for optimizing gas mileage. With this unit hooked up to the powertrain, the ride offers 32 MPG in the city, 40 MPG on the highway, and 35 MPG combined. Clubbed to a 10.8-gallon fuel tank, you can get a combined overall range of 378 miles on at full capacity. While the MPG figures seem good enough, they could have been slightly better.

The Kia Rio and the Hyundai Accent both have the best fuel economy figures in the segment. The Kia and the Hyundai get a combined EPA rating of 36 mpg which is the best in the segment. The 2021 Versa is behind its competitors in terms of fuel economy numbers by the skin of its teeth with the CVT in place. Bring in the manual, and the 2021 Versa will be beaten by a mile.

Interior
8.0/10

The Versa's interior no longer looks and feels like a children's play area. It uses nice materials throughout and has soft-touch surfaces.- CarAndDriver

Jump on to the inside of the 2021 Versa and you’re welcomed by a rather spacious cabin. The cabin feels pretty plush for the price and the segment and level of quality has gone up significantly compared to the previous generation of the Versa. Upfront, you have a nice three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel that feels sporty to hold and comes wrapped in leather in the top-spec trim level. The dashboard design is neat and clean and it is not cluttered with buttons and knobs. In the center of the dash, sits the 7-inch infotainment screen and below the screen, you’ve your various different control knobs.

The amount of space available on the inside of the Versa’s biggest plus. The cabin offers a good amount of head, shoulder, and legroom on both the rows of seats and even tall passengers can accommodate themselves comfortably on the inside. The seats too are pretty decent and offer good support. The driver’s seat is positioned properly and it helps you offer a good view of the street. Overall, Nissan has done a great job of crafting the interiors of the 2021 Versa and has left us nothing to complain about. For $17,000, this is the best that you get.

The Nissan Versa has the largest cabin space and the biggest cargo space from the competition. The Kia and the Hyundai end up as the second-tier titles in terms of cabin space. Furthermore, the cargo space is also lesser in the Korean twins as compared to the Jap. In terms of infotainment, there is nothing that will blow your socks off. However, it still is enough to get the job done. You get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard fitment in all the trims. The sound system is a 4-speaker setup in the S and SV trim and gets upgraded to a 6-speaker system with the SR trim.

That being said, the functionality keeps increasing as you move up the trim levels. While Bluetooth and radio are available in the base trims, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are reserved for the top SR trim. The NissanConnect WiFi module is available in the SV trim onwards. SiriusXM and HD Radio are also reserved for the top tier SR trim only. Some of the standout features of the interior and infotainment system are:

  • Automatic Temperature Control with in-cabin microfilter
  • Power windows with driver's one-touch auto-up/down
  • Power door locks with speed-sensing auto-locking feature
  • Remote Keyless Entry with Push Button Ignition
  • Multifunction steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment
  • Manually adjustable front seats with cloth upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
  • NissanConnect 7" color touch-screen display
  • Apple CarPlay integration
  • Android Auto
  • AM/FM audio system with four speakers
  • Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System
  • Auxiliary audio input jack
  • Three USB ports

Exterior

The new Versa is better looking, as it adopts the brand's distinct style.- Motor1

If you look at the older generations of the Versa, you’ll probably think of it as a bland and boring car (which they were). However, that’s not the case with the current one. The 2021 Nissan Versa looks striking and sleeker than before and it almost looks like it is a car from a segment above it. The car has got a smart looking face with that low slung grille accompanied by those sweptback trapezoidal headlights. Looking sideways, the car has a couple of gentle lines flowing across its body.

At the rear, you have a sloping roofline which gives the car a very distinctive look and is one of the nicest and cool-looking cars for less than $20,000. The Versa is a pretty long car and spans about 177 inches in length. The large exterior dimensions of the car just help it in offering that extra bit of passenger space on the inside. Though it can be bought for fairly cheap, it doesn’t necessarily have to be boring- that’s exactly what Nissan has showcased here with the 2021 Versa.

Safety
9.1/10

The Versa promises good crash-test performance.- The Car Connection

The 2021 Nissan Versa may fall short on a lot of things like acceleration and MPG figures, but safety is not one of them. The 2021 Nissan Versa carries a perfect 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA while the IIHS hasn't tested it fully. Though there are some safety features as standard, you can pick up the Nissan Safety Shield 360 during customization as an add-on option.

Despite the pocket-friendly price tag, the brand has not left any stone unturned and equipped the 2021 Nissan Versa with some of the best safety features in this price bracket. The following are some of the noteworthy features of the safety suite of the 2021 Nissan Versa:

  • Intelligent Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • High Beam Assist
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • RearView Monitor
  • Rear Automatic Braking

Competition
8.0/10

2021 Nissan Versa vs. 2021 Kia Rio

The 2021 Kia Rio is the ride for those who prefer performance over practicality. The Kia Rio is not as powerful as the 2021 Versa, however, it is much better in terms of performing in the real world. Add to that better MPG figures, and an overall good looking package, and the scales tip in Rio's favor. Furthermore, the interior of the Kia Rio looks and feels better than the 2021 Versa. However, the 2021 Nissan Versa is more practical and cheaper to own and maintain. Overall, both have their own pros and cons and it all boils down to which one will demand the bang for the buck for your needs.

2021 Nissan Versa vs. 2021 Hyundai Accent

The 2021 Hyundai Accent is essentially the same car under the skin as the Kia Rio and hence has the same specifications. The MPG figures and acceleration figures are better than the 2021 Versa, along with an overall immersive cabin. However, Nissan offers a more reliable build along with the revered Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard with the 2021 Versa. So, spending a few bucks more on fuel is always advisable than compromising safety, and hence we would recommend you opt for the 2021 Nissan Versa over the 2021 Hyundai Accent for the same price tag they both demand.

Final Verdict
6.5/10

The 2021 Nissan Versa retains all the winning cues from its predecessor with a very negligible hike in price for the new year. In a world full of SUVs, and crossovers, the ride keeps the sedan segment alive fair and square with its feature-packed build. It is practical, and reliable to a T. So, if you want a fairly comfortable and a bang for buck ride, then the 2021 Nissan Versa is your best bet in a 15 grand budget.
