The crowded segment of performance plug-in hybrid coupe got its new addition with the Polestar 1. A product of collaboration between Volvo and its giant Chinese auto-manufacturing parent, Geely. Polestar 1 is set to head the new engineering shift going on in the electric luxury vehicle sector, without letting go of its Swedish roots. The upcoming Polestar 1 is going to be a carryover of its 2020 version. However, there will be a new Special Edition on offer that will be limited to 25 units worldwide and will come in an exclusive matte gold paint job.
The 2021 Polestar 1 is offered as a standalone variant and its starting price of $155,000 helps maintain its exclusivity. This is excluding a $1,500 destination charge which the Polestar 1 invites. There are not a lot of customization options available for the 1, and the buyers just get to have a say in picking up the choice of wheels and exterior and interior colors. For leasing, consider the 2021 Polestar 1 to cost you $2,489 per month, for 36 months, with a down payment of $9,999
2021 Polestar 1 is a luxury premium vehicle with limited production so it is available in just a single trim level with few customization options. The main attraction of this vehicle is in its engineering. The Polestar 1 is an impressive blend of modern engineering, detail-oriented design with a hunger for innovation.
The Polestar 1 is priced at $156,500 and comes equipped with Nappa leather sports seats, heated and power-adjustable seats, and all the impeccable safety features offered in a typical Volvo. The Polestar 1's production will be limited to just 1500 units.

"When we drove the 1, its performance attributes were on full display, the car espousing agility without a hint of understeer." - Car and Driver

The Polestar 1 cruises smoothly along the road and goes from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, which is an impressive feat for a vehicle as heavy as the 1. The suspension delivers immense body control and agility, while the 21 inch Pirelli P summer tires offer a firm grip. The hybrid brakes are at times a little difficult to tune and come with energy regeneration. The vehicle has five driving modes: Hybrid, Pure Electric, AWD, Performance, and Individual.
When it comes to sheer power, the Polestar 1 dominates the charts. The 2021 Acura NSX slots in the second spot with its 573 hp 3.5L Hybrid V6 engine. However, the NSX's 0-60 time is far better than that of the Polestar 1, owing to its lightweight build. The BMW I8, which has now been discontinued sits at the bottom with 369 hp.

The 2021 Polestar 1 offers 26 MPG combined when running on hybrid mode and offers a range of 52 miles when running in the EV mode. It also has a combined 64 MPGe when both electric motors and gas engines are used. The city and highway estimates are not yet available for the Polestar 1.
The 34kWh battery takes about 3.5 hours to charge when charged at its maximum of 11kW of AC power. The battery can also be charged using DC power and gets one 80% of charge in just less than an hour. The 15.9-gallon fuel tank capacity of the Polestar is average and the electric motors do give good range and efficiency.

Since there is not ample data, comparing the rivals becomes a really hard task. The BMW I8's combined mpg of 27 leads the charts, however, the Polestar 1's electric-only range of 52 miles is miles ahead of the 22 miles EV range of the I8. The Acura NSX's mpg slots in the bottom with 21 mpg combined. However, that's obvious as unlike the other two rivals, the NSX's battery setup help enhance its performance rather than efficiency.

"The Polestar 1's wide and low body beltline doesn't just look good. It also makes for excellent visibility of the road in all directions and creates a sense of spaciousness for front occupants." - Edmunds
The interior of the 2021 Polestar 1 gives off a lovely and elegant vibe which is very different from the extra and demanding aesthetic that German cars give off. There’s a very distinct Volvo touch to the overall layout of the interior design of the Polestar. All materials inside are of premium quality with Nappa Leather and leather-clad rims. The vehicle has a 2+2 seater, with heated front seats providing excellent lumbar support. There are Brogue pattern strips forming the border of seats and headrests.
The usage of carbon fiber and metal adds an exceptional richness to the whole experience. The front seats are generous and comfortable but at the same time, the rear seats are compromised. With marred legroom and a plunging roofline eating into the headroom, there’s much space to claim so. The lack of space extends to the trunk area too as the Polestar 1's cargo capacity of 4.3 cubic feet will make you rethink what to pack and whatnot.

The Swedish influence in Polestar 1’s tech and the infotainment system is pretty evident as the whole system feels very clean and minimalistic compared to the flamboyance and extraness of other luxury performance vehicles. The vertical infotainment screen of the Polestar 1 is slightly tilted towards the driver for enhanced ease of use. There are only a few buttons and knobs for using the system manually. The touchscreen's operation is absolutely fluidic with almost zero lags and stutters, and top-notch graphic resolution.
The audio is taken care of by the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, which gets a 16-speaker setup along with a subwoofer. The Polestar 1 also gets a 12.3-inch digital driver's display and a head-up display. Some of the most prominent interior and infotainment features in 2021 Polestar 1 are:-

"With a unique and clean design, it's easy to tell that the Polestar 1 is something special." - Carbuzz
The looks of the Polestar 1 are strikingly elegant with a minimalistic body design. The front fascia will remind you of Volvo XC 90. A number of Swedish styling cues are visible on the Polestar 1. The vehicle has a perfect profile of a teardrop sliced in half which is largely due to the presence of a sloping roofline. The whole bodywork is done in carbon fiber which makes the car lighter and sturdier too.
The coupe has 21-inch alloy wheels that suit its elegant styling really well. Sleek LED DRLs and taillights properly complement the vehicle and help garner gain attention too. All in all, the polestar 1 can be categorized as an attractive, expensive package, and rightfully it deserves so!

The Polestar 1's dimensions make it the heaviest of the segment and take the most space out of all the vehicles in the segment. BMW also has very striking and eye-pleasing features while the Acura commands your attention and praise with its low height and sporty look. Polestar 1 is a Volvo product which means its high on safety and driver support systems. Volvo has made a commitment to bring fatal accidents involving its vehicles to zero by the year 2025 and in testament to that, all the safety features come standard with the 2021 Polestar 1.
The Polestar 1 gets the advanced driver assistance feature called the Pilot Assist as standard, which comes with many safety-enhancing features like blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist. Some other advanced safety features of the 2021 Polestar 1 are mentioned below:

The Acura NSX is one of the few rivals that go head-on against the Polestar 1. The NSX has been around for quite a while now, and is popularly referred to as the "everyday sportscar". Priced at $157,500, the NSX is driven by a 3.5L twin-turbo Hybrid V6 engine that helps the NSX propel from 0-60 mph in a blistering 2.7 seconds. While the Polestar 1's PHEV setup is to aid with performance as well as efficiency, the NSX's hybrid system's duties are limited to making it go fast and faster. The Polestar 1's limited production also lends it a sense of exclusivity over the NSX.
The BMW i8 has appealing looks and a personality that is synonymous with a BMW. It is also very fast and offers intense smooth acceleration despite having an underpowered engine. The vehicle is comfortable and fun, and even fuel-efficient but with its smaller fuel tank and cargo, and a very hefty price tag it is not liked by many. The Polestar even though being an infant in the segment performs better.
Polestar 1 is a very remarkable car but it’s hard to say if it’s a great car at a great price. It offers a number of positives in the form of breathtaking elegance and styling, a powerful PHEV powertrain, and rarity with its limited production. Some of its major drawbacks include a compact interior, visibly non-existent cabin space, and a very artificial feel to the driving experience. The lofty price tag also does not help the Polestar but if one could go on a 1 PHEV Coupe, they will surely be the talk of the town.
