Overall Rating
The 2021 Tesla Model S has gone through a strict diet and lost some weight to improve the driving dynamics. It is also now more efficient, thanks to the upgraded regenerative braking. The prices for the 2021 Tesla Model S have been reduced and it now starts at about $72,990 for the Long Range. A new and more aggressive 1,020 HP Plaid version has also been introduced and will be available by 10th of June 2021!
The Tesla Model S marches into the model year 2021 with major changes. For starters, it gets an updated interior layout with a horizontally laid-out infotainment screen and a yoke-style steering wheel. Apart from this, Tesla is also rolling out a high-performance trim of the Model S in 2021, going by the name Plaid. The prices for the new Model S have increased from $72,990 to $89,990 for the well-equipped Long Range which does 0-60 in 3.1 seconds and achieves a top speed of 155 mph. There is also the performance-focused Model S Plaid is priced at $129,990.
The 2021 Model S was also supposed to get a Plaid+ variant offering a 520-mile range and about 1100 hp. However, Elon Musk in a recent tweet stated that the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid+ will not see the light of day as it has been canceled. Also, the 2021 Model S' exterior now includes aggressive haunches and a sleeker hood for improved aerodynamics. Buyers must note that the Model S is eligible for the $1,500 California Clean Fuel Reward and gas savings of $5,500.
We recommend to opt for the Performance trim. Now we know that the base Long Range trim has most of all the features and costs less, but in our opinion, the bump in performance you get with the Performance trim makes the higher price worth it. Along with a higher top speed and quicker acceleration, the Performance trim also offers slight interior updates and a carbon fiber spoiler.

The 2021 Tesla Model S comes loaded with a long list of features, wrapped inside a very minimalistic and modern interior layout. You still get all the modern luxury tech like heated seats, heated steering wheel, and Tesla's all-famous AutoPilot is also offered as standard.
Available in a well-equipped single trim, the 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range will set you back by about $89,990, but there is also the Plaid model. This new Model S has some improved aerodynamic wheels along with reduced weight, maximizing the range and regenerative braking efficiency.

Despite having almost similar features, the main difference between the three trims is highlighted in their names. The Long Range, which starts at $72,990, has a higher 405-mile range but lags in terms of performance, this is only when it is compared to the Plaid. Whereas, the Model S Plaid is more tilted towards better performance.

We recommend opting for the base Long Range trim itself, as it's the only available option. A 0-60 time of 3.1 seconds is not any less nor is a top speed of 155 mph, incase you were thinking its performance is less but is lesser than the Plaid which costs $40,000 more. However, We do recommend getting the Deep Blue Metallic paint, 21' Arachnid wheels, and the Black and White interior.

"The standard Model S has proven itself an agile sports sedan with well-controlled body motions and direct steering" - Car And Driver
The incredible performance of the 2021 Tesla Model S is all based on its 2 motors, which can be found on each axle. The rear motor is the same old induction motor, however, the front motor is a new permanent magnet motor. A single-speed direct-drive transmission means all that power goes directly to all the wheels. The 2021 Tesla Model S does the 0-60 mph sprint in a mere 3.1 seconds. The Model S 'Plaid', can do the same in 1.9 seconds.
The new 2021 Tesla Model S also goes on a diet and gets some new lightweight and aerodynamic wheels, and an improved regenerative braking system, which in turn increases the efficiency of the powertrain. A low center of gravity coupled with sharp steering and excellent suspensions makes the Model S have a driving experience that is smooth and reliable. It stays planted in a quick turn as well as on a straight.

Even while the Porsche Taycan 4S costs almost $14,000 more than the Model S, it substantially makes lesser power. Although that power difference might not translate into any real-world difference, it sure does hurt Taycan's reputation as a Porsche. Unlike the Model S however, the Taycan 4S is equipped with a 2-speed transmission in the rear, which helps it modulate the power and hereby boosts its performance.

The cabin's atmosphere is nice enough, but it's not nearly as plush as those of our favorites - Car And Driver.
The 2021 Tesla Model S gets an updated interior that features a new landscape-oriented touchscreen and an aircraft-style Yoke steering wheel also found on the refreshed Model X. The center stage is held by the 17-inch touchscreen at the center console which is used to control almost all the functions of the Model S. Moreover, the 2021 Tesla Model S also gets an entertainment system for the rear seats.
Teslas never had any problems with visibility. With wide viewing angles along with its plethora of autonomous features of the 2021 Tesla Model S is one of the easiest cars to drive. As there is no combustion engine present in the front or the rear, the Model S gets two different trunks, one in the front popularly known as "frunk" and one in the rear, taking the total cargo storage to a class-leading 26 cubic feet.
Also, the 2021 Model S boasts a tiny screen in the center console for the rear passengers to fulfill all their infotainment needs. Tesla also offers an App that can be linked with your car to control its features. Even the trunk and frunk are accessed via the screen. Opening the doors or the trunks, starting the car, or even summoning the car to find you in a parking lot!

The interior of the 2021 Taycan 4S feels more like a Sports car, but with a few more screens. While the Model S has taken a more simplistic route, the Taycan 4S chooses to have a more clustered look. The 2021 Tesla Model S also retains the same dimensions as its predecessor, which means that it is as practical as always.

"The Model S's sloped roofline cleverly hides a rear liftgate that opens up to reveal a huge 26-cubic-foot trunk." - CarAndDriver.com
The 2021 Tesla Model S looks just as charismatic on the outside as it is impressive on the inside. The curvy yet angular front, the LED DRLs, and the sharp contour lines make the Model S look quite attractive. The 2021 Tesla Model S gets subtle exterior upgrades with more aggressive haunches and a sleeker-looking hood. The new Model S also went through a weight reduction while still maintaining the same aesthetics.
The addition of a Carbon fiber spoiler on the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid variant is subtle enough to blend into the design but will catch everyone’s eye. With its distinctive hatchback design and a set of new lightweight and aerodynamic wheels, the new Model S looks even more intriguing.

The lack of a conventional combustion engine also gives the Model S a practical edge as well. The Model S's dimensions are much more proportionate and attractive than the Taycan's dimensions. It's lighter while having more length and a longer wheelbase. The Taycan is however substantially narrower than the Model S.

With the launch of the Taycan in 2020, the Model S finally has a worthy competitor. However, even when the Model S was in the market without any real competition, it never slacked off. Even after Taycan’s launch, the comparison shows the clear advantage the Model S has.
It is lighter, faster, quicker, and has more range, all for over $30,000 less. This Porsche, however, will nudge Tesla to step up its interior game. Taycan’s majestic interiors look spectacular compared to the Model S’s, which some people have chosen to call a little too simplified.
The new 2021 Tesla Model S is the epitome of electric cars. While cars like the Taycan 4S are much more expensive at an MSRP of $103,800, the Model S provides breathtaking performance, looks, and features at a lesser price. Tesla’s success over the years was only possible with the Model S setting such a good example, which it will continue to do in 2021, with its updated interior and exterior styling and better range with Plaid model.
