2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Review

Pros

  • Built like a tank
  • Feature rich interior
  • Well Disciplined for an SUV

Cons

  • Lacks Apple Play and Android Auto
  • Poor Fuel Economy
  • Limited third row seating

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is the last model of the moniker. It is available for sale in 2 trims Standard and Heritage Edition with a starting price of $85,665. Powered by a 381 hp 5.7L V8 engine, it has a towing capacity of 8,100 lbs. The interior forms the perfect cross between practicality, luxury, and comfort. However, with the interior design leaks of the 300 Series doing the rounds, the Land Cruiser may have one special edition coming out soon.

Overview

All set for its last outing, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is going all guns blazing with a starting MSRP of $85,665 which excludes the $1,365 destination fee. To up the ante, the 1200 unit limited-production Heritage Edition switches back to the OG Land Cruiser days with an offer price of $87,995. Available for sale with the same specs as before, the 2021 Land Cruiser is powered by a 381 hp 5.7L V8 engine that imparts a towing capacity of 8,100 lbs and offers a combined gas mileage of 14 MPG. The interior has always been the highlight for the moniker and this time is no different as the ride retains the same charisma as before.

With the standard 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser, you get a spacious seating capacity of 7-seats. However, for the extra price, the Heritage Edition deletes the third-row of seating and adds more cargo space and updates the overall interior features. To own the 2021 Land Cruiser, you can either pay the price in full, finance it for $1,400/month for 72 months, or lease it for $1,350/month for 36 months with an annual mileage limit of 12,000 miles. With finance, the downpayment stands at $2,000 while leasing it will demand a $4,000 signing amount. Owing to its humongous dimensions, it competes against the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and the Lexus LX 570.

Toyota to axe the Land Cruiser after 2021 model year

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is a full-time four-wheel-drive icon with a handful of luxury touches.- The Car Connection

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser can be had in 2 trims, namely- Standard and Heritage Edition. The Standard trim starts from an MSRP of $85,665 while the Heritage Edition is priced at $87,995. Both of the trims demand an additional $1,365 as a destination fee, which is non-negotiable. Under the hood, both the trims are powered by a 381 hp 5.7L V8 engine hooked up to a 4WD drivetrain. This allows the 2021 Land Cruiser to possess a towing capacity of 8,100 lbs. The real difference between the trims lies in the interior layout and the exterior aesthetics.

While the 2021 Land Cruiser Standard offers a total seating capacity of 8 people with 3-rows of seating, the Heritage Edition drops the seating capacity to 5 by removing the third row. This makes way for slightly more seating space in the second row, and an expansive 41.4 cu-ft of cargo space at the back. On the exterior, the Heritage Edition gets the Yakima MegaWarrior roof rack, and exclusive "Toyota Land Cruiser" badging on the D-Pillars, and front fenders.

Buying Advice

Though both the trims are going to be well worth the investment, we would recommend the Heritage Edition of the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser. For a marginally increased price, you are getting a more exclusive build that is reminiscent of the OG Land Cruiser, more interior features, and much larger cargo space. However, if three rows of seating is a must, then you can either revert to the Standard trim or spend $1,420 extra on top of the MSRP and pick up the Heritage Edition-3 Row Seating Package.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

The Land Cruiser is among the last old-school, live-axle, body-on-frame 4x4 SUVs still on the market, and for that, we love the thing. - Motor Trend

Pop the massive hood of the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser, and you will reveal the big-block 5.7L naturally aspirated V8 engine housed comfortably. This motor unit is ruggedly powerful and quite torquey as it produces 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. An "intelligent" 8-speed automatic transmission dubbed as Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission (ECT-i) is hooked up to the engine unit. This transmission is capable enough to put the power from the engine to the wheels via the 4WD drivetrain. Thanks to this, despite being a luxury SUV, the 2021 Land Cruiser has no troubles treading off-roads.

Built with a body-on-frame design like the pickup trucks, the ride comes with a live axle that is quite enjoyable to control. Add to that the capability to tow 8,100 lbs at its best, and the 2021 Land Cruiser looks like a luxurious hauler as well. Be it on the roads, or out in the wilderness, body roll is imminent, however, the suspension system performs a great job at minimizing it. Furthermore, with Multi-Terrain Control, you can also adjust the dynamic characteristics of the ride as per the terrain you are on. With the Heritage Edition add-ons, the 2021 Land Cruiser even looks the part.

For a ride that costs $85,665 to start with, and also weighs close to almost 6,000 lbs, it's easy to assume that it won't sprint that fast. However, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser packs a punch and can go from 0-60 mph in just 6.6 seconds. The quarter-mile takes 15.1 seconds to be completed. To keep up with this sprinting spree, the brakes are also quite beefy. You get 14-inch brake rotors in the front and 13.6-inch brake rotors in the back. Owing to these, the ride can stop from 60-0 mph at a stopping distance of 138 feet.

Compared to the rest, the Land Cruiser seems like the costlier option owing to the low power figures it has. The Lincoln Navigator is the closest competitor in terms of price and is the most powerful, and also the fastest one in the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile sprints. The Lexus LX 570 is the corporate cousin to the 2021 Land Cruiser, and for the $600 extra, offers marginally more power and torque. However, it is laden with features from top to bottom. The Cadillac Escalade has just undergone a generational change. The cheapest option of this lot, it is adequately powerful and a decent performer in acceleration as well.

Fuel Economy
5.5/10

At a time when many automakers are adopting hybrid powertrains, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser retains the age-old big-block V8 approach. Hence, the MPG figures are far from satisfactory. The ride offers 13 MPG in the city, 17 MPG on the highway, and 14 MPG combined. One of the biggest costs associated with owning the 2021 Land Cruiser is the fuel costs, touching almost 14 grand in 5 years.

To make up for the low MPG figures, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser offers a fuel tank capacity of 24.6 gallons. At full capacity, you can get an overall combined driving range of 344 miles. At its best, you can get 418 miles on the highway as well. Despite being a Toyota, the 2021 Land Cruiser is a white elephant in terms of fuel efficiency and will take a lot of getting used to.

Compared to the others, the Navigator is the most fuel-efficient, despite being a gas guzzler. The Escalade is also a gas guzzler but is more fuel frugal compared to the Jap twins. The Land Cruiser is a thirsty ride as is, but its soul cousin, the LX 570 is even thirstier with lower MPG figures.

Interior
7.0/10

The large door openings and multiple chunky grab handles help people climb in and out, and first- and second-row passengers will find lots of space once they're inside. - Edmunds

Step into the interior of the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser and you will find the old-world charm in a fairly modern package. The ride lives up to the tag of bigger is better with the spacious front rows that have power-adjustable seats with perforated leather upholstery. These seats have ample room to allow even the taller guys to sit comfortably with reclining, folding, and sliding capability. The dashboard is wrapped in leather with the infotainment system placed conveniently in the center. There is also a 4-zone automatic climate control system that keeps the cabin comfortable even in the scorching California sun.

The second row is equally spacious and comfortable for passengers of all shapes and sizes. Overall, there is a seating capacity enough for 8 people which is more than enough for even a large family. Furthermore, in its pursuit of size, the ride also packs practicality in volumes with its amply sized 16.1 cu-ft of cargo space behind the third row. Fold down the third row of seats and the room will open up to 41.4 cu-ft. With the Heritage Edition, the third row of seating is deleted to make room for the bigger cargo space.

Compared to the adversaries, the third row of the LX 570 is cramped like the 2021 Land Cruiser as they are pretty much the same car with different badging. The Lincoln Navigator is the most amply spaced in all three rows with the Cadillac Escalade following suit in second place. In-car entertainment is a big deal now, and the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser does not leave that facet behind with a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard fitment. This is hooked up to a 14-speaker JBL Sound System as standard fitment. For the price it demands, functionalities like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still not part of the standard mix of features.

And unfortunately, they are not available as add-on features either. However, for a couple extra thousand bucks, the Standard trim can get a rear-seat entertainment system. This will add two 11.6-inch display screens and individual headphones for second-row passengers. That being said, the standard infotainment system offers a decent UI that is not hard to get used to and packs all the other connectivity tech like Bluetooth, WiFi, and USB. Some of the notable features of the interior and infotainment system of the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser are:

  • 10-way power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation
  • Leather upholstery on the seats, steering wheel, door panels, and dashboard
  • 4-zone automatic climate control with separate controls for front passenger and driver
  • 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 14-speaker JBL sound system
  • Bluetooth, WiFi, and USB connectivity
  • Multifunction steering wheel with Power-adjustable tilt and telescopic adjustment
  • LED accent lighting and LED map lights for the second row

Safety
6.0/10

Toyotas are usually crash-tested for their safety standards, but the Land Cruiser seems to be the exception. The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser has not been crash-tested by either the NHTSA or IIHS and hence does not have any safety ratings yet. That being said, being the last body-on-frame style construction SUV with a live axle, it is built like a tank to withstand even the roughest of situations with ease.

To make up for the fact that the 2021 Land Cruiser does not have safety ratings, Toyota has provided a plethora of safety features as standard. Ranging from active safety tech to driver assistance tech, and secondary safety features, it truly goes the extra mile to justify the 90 grand it asks from the buyers with the tech it has. Some of the notable safety features of the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser are:

  • 10 airbags
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)
  • Lane Departure Alert (LDA)
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
  • Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC)
  • Crawl Control (CRAWL) with Off-road Turn Assist
  • Brake Assist with Smart Stop Technology (SST)
  • Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS)
  • Emergency and Roadside Assistance
  • Stolen Vehicle Locator
  • Automatic Collision Notification
  • Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)
  • Bird's Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan

2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Vs 2021 Lexus LX 570

The 2021 Lexus LX 570 is the corporate cousin to the 2021 Land Cruiser. Comparing each other directly, the LX 570 is more luxurious, more stylish, and overall more technologically forward. Furthermore, with the same engine, the LX 570 offers marginally more power. However, this additional power causes a hit on the MPG figures that are behind the Land Cruiser. When it boils down to it, for $600 extra, the 2021 Lexus LX 570 does strike a better bargain.

2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Vs 2021 Cadillac Escalade

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade takes forward the legacy of the ride with a generational change this year. All set in a new avatar, the interior luxury grows to new levels and even sets the precedent with its unique 38-inch curved OLED dashboard with overlapping screens. Compared to the 2021 Land Cruiser, the 2021 Escalade is more powerful, more fuel-efficient, and more spacious in all three rows of seating. Furthermore, it is technologically more sound. However, the 2021 Land Cruiser is better equipped for handling the outdoors. Overall, for the price point, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade strikes a better bargain and hence is our pick.

2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Vs 2021 Lincoln Navigator

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator is the hot favorite in the segment when it comes to overall consideration. Easily the most powerful, most fuel-efficient, and better-equipped interior features-wise, the 2021 Lincoln Navigator lives every bit to the hype and price it demands. The 2021 Land Cruiser seems like a remnant of a time long past with its big-block V8. However, compared to all three, the Land Cruiser is the most well equipped to handle the outdoors, and also the most reliable one, owing to its factor of being a Toyota.

Final Verdict

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser may be the last model of the moniker, but it surely does not leave any stone unturned for the buyers to keep them happy. The interior might lack connectivity features, but the luxury and comfort factor more than makes up for it. For the 90 grand it demands to join your garage, the 2021 Land Cruiser is a perfect mix of a stately daily driver and a monstrous off-roader. While the competitors like Cadillac Escalade have become better equipped, the 2021 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition is ready to handle those threats with ease. Hence, we would definitely recommend buying the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser.
