The number of trims for the 2021 Toyota Prius sits at 5, namely- L-Eco, LE, XLE, 2020 Edition, and Limited. The 20th Anniversary edition is dubbed the 2020 Prius Edition that gets "2020" badging in the interior elements, blacked-out exterior elements, and 17-inch wheels for a price of $29,875. The rest of the lineup starts from $24,525 for the L-Eco trim and goes up to $32,650 for the Limited trim. 

All the trims are powered by the same 121 hp 1.8L I-4 hybrid powertrain hooked up to an FWD as standard. However, the LE and XLE trims are the unique ones that get an on-demand AWD-e for $1,400 and $1,000 extra respectively. In comparison to most of its competitors, it is the only one with the AWD setup.

Standard fitment across the entire trim lineup is the Toyota Safety Sense and Star Safety System, LED Headlamps, and Bi-LED taillamps. The Prius gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa in all the trims. This gets upgraded to an 11.6-inch system with a 10-speaker JBL sound system in the Limited trim.

Though the 2021 Toyota Prius is a value-for-money option in all avatars, the XLE trim is the best offering out there that we recommend. For a price tag of $28,575, it offers features like power-adjustable and heated front seats, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto, a heated steering wheel with SofTex upholstery, and combined gas mileage of 52 mpg, the Prius is all the more worthy.

Under the hood, the specs of the 2021 Toyota Prius remain the same as the 2020 Prius. Bringing it to life is a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine that churns out 95 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque. The engine is hooked up to an electric motor that produces 71 hp and 120 lb-ft of torque. Combined, this system generates 121 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque. It comes hooked up to a CVT transmission that directs power to the FWD drivetrain. AWD is available only on the LE and XLE trim.

The on-demand AWD adds an independent motor system to the rear which works irrespective of the main powertrain. Regardless of whichever trim you choose, the 2021 Prius drives like a well-mannered city driver- nimble, agile, and maneuverable. Flooring the pedal on the highway, you will end up getting disappointed since it's not made to be a performer. For the price, the 2021 Prius does enough to keep you happy and performs its duties diligently.

If you still want to floor it, the 2021 Toyota Prius can complete the sprint from 0-60 mph in a relaxed 9.8 seconds. Push it for the quarter-mile, and its tardiness starts to set in since that takes 17.6 seconds. Despite not being built with too much high-end tech, the ride does feature regenerative braking with 10.2-inch front rotors and 10-inch rear rotors. So when you brake, the energy produced is captured to recharge the battery pack. With these brakes, the 2021 Prius can stop from 60-0 mph in a short braking distance of 117 feet.

The AWD version reduces the combined to 49 mpg. Fret not, since it offers a fuel tank capacity of 11.3 gallons which results in an overall combined driving range of 633 miles. However, if you want an all-electric driving range of 25 miles then have a look at the 2021 Prius Prime. Compared to the competition, the Hyundai Ioniq offers a better-combined mpg and also better range thanks to a larger fuel tank.

Step into the interior of the 2021 Toyota Prius, and you will be engulfed in a world of plastic. In order to deliver on its feature-packed promises and fuel-efficient 1.8L powertrain, the interior takes a big hit. That being said, the overall build quality is still solid and sturdy, as is expected from a Toyota. The front cabin houses the digital driver display at the center of the dashboard instead of being in front of the driver. The placement of the cluster can be troublesome at times since you will have to take your eyes off the road a lot of times.

The standout feature of the 2021 Prius is the upright seating posture. So, even guys taller than 6-feet will not find it a struggle to sit in the front. With 42.2-inches of legroom in the front, it's not cramped either. That being said, the rear seats can be a bit of a struggle for the taller folks since you get 33.4-inches of legroom. It also packs a cargo capacity of 27.4 cu. ft. which is more than the Hyundai Ioniq, Honda Insight, and Kia Niro Hybrid

In terms of keeping the occupants entertained, the 2021 Prius comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard fitment in all the trims. This gets bumped to a vertical 11.6-inch screen with the flagship Limited trim. The best part about the system for this year is the addition of Android Auto functionality across the lineup except for the Limited trim. 

Other features include Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay & Amazon Alexa integration, AM/FM radio, and USB ports. The smaller infotainment setup is hooked up to a 6-speaker setup which is decent, while the bigger one gets a 10-speaker JBL sound system. One look at the 2021 Prius and it might strike you like a ninja looking back at you. Its exterior is designed to be quirky but does have a mix of the Toyota design language with the Japanese katana-shaped grille, and the wide vents at the front lip that are reminiscent of the flagship 2021 Avalon. Along with that, you also get LED headlamps with DRLs that are standard fitment all across the lineup. 

On the side, depending on the choice of trim, you get 15-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels which help in a total ground clearance of 5.1-inches. Furthermore, despite being dubbed as a hatchback, it has a Sportback-ish roofline which allows it to be longer than it actually is. Move to the back, and the color-coordinated rear spoiler and Bi-LED combination taillamps sit in full glory, completing the overall stylish package.

Compared to the others, despite its quirky design silhouette, we figure, the Prius to be the least appealing hybrid of them all. Kia's design language for the Niro seems to work, as it is easily the best-looking car in this segment. The Honda Insight on the other hand is the longest measuring 183.6-inches in length and the lightest one. Despite sharing the same wheelbase, every ride has its own body style like the Ioniq has a liftback design with the widest stance, compared to the Honda Insight.

2021 Toyota Prius vs 2021 Honda Insight

The 2021 Honda Insight is probably one of the strongest contenders for the 2021 Toyota Prius. Much more powerful with better acceleration, and offering decent MPG figures, it does tick all of the right boxes for the buyers. Furthermore, it is the only one that has a seemingly sedan-like body style which aids Insight's spacious cabin at a lower price which gives it an edge overall. The 2021 Prius finds its saving grace in its spectacular fuel efficiency, world-class reliability, easy ownership, and the biggest cargo area it has to offer. 

2021 Toyota Prius vs 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq is as close as it comes to dethroning the 2021 Prius. With a similar hatchback-inspired body, Ioniq offers the best MPG figures in the class, comparable cargo capacity, more cabin room, and a more powerful engine setup, all in a lower price tag. That being said, the 2021 Toyota Prius has better safety features and has a proven track record for reliability. Moreover, the Ioniq is better looking than the Prius any day. Overall, it boils down to brand preference here.

2021 Toyota Prius vs 2021 Kia Niro Hybrid

The 2021 Kia Niro Hybrid comes with more power and better performance. However, the Kia Niro does offer lower mpg numbers and lesser cargo space. However, it does look like the standard Kia Niro and is priced similarly to the Toyota Prius. However, as the Prius offers better mpg and more practicality for the same price, we will say the Prius is a better option.

Holding its head high, the 2021 Toyota Prius delivers all of the promises it made when it was born 2 decades ago, except for a note-worthy exterior design. An affordable price tag, an impressive fuel economy of up to 58 MPG, praise-worthy features, and a feature-rich yet quirky interior. With so many variants to choose from, the 2021 Prius has certainly nailed the definition of value for money. However, if you are looking for something similar for slightly lesser money the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid is the one to look at.
