The 2021 Toyota Sequoia comes in four different trims, namely SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, and Platinum trims, all of which range between a price tag of $50,100 to $69,245. Additionally, 2021 marks the arrival of the Nightshade Edition of the Sequoia, which offers larger 20-inch alloy wheels, backed out exterior bits like the grille, door handles, and badging. The Night Edition, which comes for an MSRP of $60,120, gets a full-black interior and three exterior color options, namely Wind Chill Pearl, Magnetic Gray, and Midnight Black. 

Alon with the impressive list of the interior, exterior, and safety features that come across the trim levels like the LED headlights, 8-passenger seating capacity, automatic headlamps, three-zone climate control system, rear-view camera, and multiple interiors and exterior color options, the 2021 Toyota Sequoia also gets additional optional features and packages including Premium Package for $4,325 which adds many infotainments and interior features to the Sequoia. Optional exterior features like front skid plates, TRD cast aluminum running boards, and TRD skid plates are also available for an additional $425, $799, and $499, respectively.

The base SR5 trim of the 2021 Toyota Sequoia turned out to be the most value for money trim of the lot due to the presence of many interiors, exterior, and safety features as standard like LED headlights, rear cross-traffic alert system, front and rear parking sensors, powered sunroof, blindspot monitoring, and many more enticing features. All of this also comes at a lower MSRP of $50,100 for the RWD trim and $53,325 for the 4WD trim. In comparison to the likes of 2021 Ford Expedition, 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2021 Land Rover Discovery, the Toyota Sequoia turned out to be the most powerful too.

2021 Toyota Sequoia comes with a single engine and transmission option, a 5.7L Naturally Aspirated V8 mated to a 6-Speed Automatic. The engine doesn't see any changes from the previous version and offers the same performance rating of 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. Even the more off-road worthy TRD PRO trim, which comes for an MSRP of $64,225 also come with the same powertrain as the rest of the trims.

The 6-Speed Automatic is decently quick and works in a very smooth and subtle manner. The very fact that the Sequoia can tow around 7,000 pounds easily should give you a good idea about the capability of this powertrain and transmission on offer. This 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission also gets selectable drive modes, sequential shift control, and an oil cooler. For an additional $3,200 you can also opt for a full-time 4WD variant too.

Toyota Sequoia easily leads the pack with a power output of 381bhp and offers the highest power to dollar ratio. Sequoia is followed closely by the Ford Expedition with a 375hp engine on offer. With a higher curb weight, the 2021 Toyota Sequoia is slower when compared to most of the competition and comes out with a 0-60MPH time of 7.1 seconds. The best acceleration times were posted by the Ford Expedition with 6.2 seconds and 14.8 seconds to do 0-60 MPH and the quarter-mile, followed by the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe with 6.7 seconds to reach 60 MPH.

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia is based on the pickup truck chassis, and hence it feels every bit like one. There is always a constant vertical movement due to the hard suspension on offer. The Sequoia is also not the best in terms of handling too, due to heavy curb weight and high center of gravity. The more than average body roll and unimpressive handling will put off many buyers for sure. However, the towing capacity and braking performance is quite impressive and can easily be termed as one of the best in the segment.

Like the outgoing 2020 model of the Toyota Sequoia, the 2021 version is no different either when it comes to the gas mileage on offer. This full-size SUV offers an abysmal city gas mileage of 13 MPG, a highway rating of 17 MPG, both of which equates to a combined rating of 15 MPG. With the RWD configuration, the 2021 Toyota Sequoia offers 22.8 gallons of fuel tank capacity, which helps to provide a combined range of 342 miles.

Since all the trims of the Toyota Sequoia come with the same powertrain, the fuel efficiency is not going to get any better. However, if you opt for the 4WD version, the combined gas mileage will go down by 1 mile to 14MPG. One of the biggest reasons for the poor performance in fuel efficiency front is due to the massive 5.7L naturally aspirated V8 motor that is mated to an old-school 6-speed torque converter unit. 

In comparison to the likes of 2021 Land Rover Discovery, 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2021 Ford Expedition, the Toyota Sequoia turned out to be the worst performer in the fuel efficiency front due to combined gas mileage of 15 MPG as opposed to a marginally better rating of 18MPG provided by Tahoe and Discovery and 20 MPG provided by the Expedition. The combined range of 468 miles provided by the Tahoe was also the best of the lot, which is closely followed by Expedition with 466 miles.

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia comes with the exact interior of the outgoing 2020 model and offers four interior color combinations for the trims like SR5, Platinum, and Limited. However, the TRD PRO and Nightshade Edition, which comes for an MSRP of $64,225 and $63,345, gets a full black color combination, which makes it quite sporty and elegant. The 2021 Toyota Sequoia also comes as standard with all the bells and whistles like a sunroof, leather upholstery, electrically adjustable front seats, power-folding rear seats, three-zone climate control air conditioning, and many more. The TRD PRO trim also comes with many subtle TRD specific trim pieces too.

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia offers an underwhelming interior space, with below-average headroom and legroom in comparison to the rivals. The Chevrolet Tahoe came out with the most spacious interior, which is followed by the 2021 Ford Expedition. The cargo capacity of 41.2 cubic feet put out by the Land Rover Discovery was also the best of the segment in comparison to the 18.9 cubic feet on offer from Sequoia. However, the 2021 Sequoia offered third-row seats which the Discovery lacked.

The 7-inch infotainment system looks small on the dashboard, but it works admirably well. It has Android Auto as well as Apple car play to keep you entertained. The infotainment system is operated through touch as well as with the help of buttons and knobs. There’s a USB input, and the system is paired up with a 14-speaker JBL system which gave out an impressive audio experience. The rear end also gets more infotainment options in higher Platinum trim, such as Blu-Ray players and wireless earphones.

We were mighty impressed with the road presence on offer from the Nightshade Edition of the 2021 Sequoia with the full black exterior. The 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 275 section tires is also quite impressive for a full-size SUV. You also get multiple optional exterior features like front skid plates, TRD cast aluminum running boards, and TRD skid plates for an additional $425, $799, and $499, respectively.

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia is truly mesmerizing to look at due to the best-in-class 2021 ground clearance of 9.9-inch coupled with a wheelbase of 122-inch. The height of 77-inch is also the highest of the segment and dwarfs the competitors like the 2021 Discovery and 2021 Tahoe, both of which come with a height of 73-inch and 74.4-inch. The Sequoia is also the heaviest of the lot with a curb weight of 5,730 lbs, which is closely followed by Expedition and Tahoe with 5,443 lbs and 5,355 lbs.

2021 Toyota Sequoia Vs 2021 Land Rover Discovery

The Sequoia does better in terms of acceleration and outright performance, whereas the British SUV lags slightly behind on both fronts. Along with that, the 2021 Land Rover Discovery is also more expensive than the 2021 Sequoia, coming in at $53,295 for the base SE trim. However, the Discovery offers a more up-to-date interior and charming exterior in comparison to the Sequoia. It is also quite a bit more opulent too. The 2021 Discovery trumps the segment in terms of fuel efficiency as well.

2021 Toyota Sequoia Vs 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe managed to put out better acceleration times in comparison to the Toyota Sequoia, despite its lower power output. This is largely due to its slightly lower cur weight on offer. But this performance comes at a price, that is terrible ride quality, which is even poorer than the already choppy ride quality on offer with the Sequoia. Along with that, the Sequoia will be more reliable in the long run and offers even better standard interior and safety features too. However, the Tahoe managed to undercut the Sequoia in terms of price, coming in at an MSRP of $49,195.   

2021 Toyota Sequoia Vs 2021 Ford Expedition

The 2021 Ford Expedition has to be the best offering of the full-size SUV segment due to the excellent turbocharged powertrain on offer which can haul huge cargos with ease and still manage to offer the best in class gas mileage too. It is also more spacious than the Sequoia and turned out to be a more capable handler too. Though the Expedition is priced slightly higher than the Sequoia coming in at $53,425, it is a more value for money package too.

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia has a lot of things going for it. This full-size SUV gets a bulletproof V8 motor that is quite synonymous with its longevity as well as low-end and mid-range performance. The car comes filled with all the necessary infotainment, interior, and safety features as standard too, making it one of the best choices for families. Sure, it is not the most spacious interior of the segment. The Sequoia is also a let down in terms of gas mileage and ride quality too. However, if you could overlook these issues, the 2021 Toyota Sequoia is an impressive SUV that comes at a base price of $50,100.
