The 2022 Audi R8 sports car this year gets a slight adjustment to the specs and features. For starters, the standard 5.2L V10 engine in the base model gets a 30 hp bump over the 2021 MY. All set for release in the fall of 2021, this practical sports car is priced at $148,700. The R8's big on performance, and its minimalistic interior has everything one expects on such a premium offering, from heated seats, power-adjustable steering wheel, to a large Virtual Cockpit display that looks very appealing.
The 2022 Audi R8 is a carryover model from the 2021 R8, with a few tweaks on the feature front, and is probably one of the last production years for this legendary moniker. The car is available in a coupe and convertible body style, and there are two trims on each body style. The Audi R8 is a striking sports car with its mid-engine layout and aerodynamic styling, but the car is a lot more practical for everyday use than some of its rivals. The 2022 R8 comes with RWD as standard for an MSRP of $146,500. An AWD model is also on offer for a price of $197,600
This German car has a fine recipe that helps offer a comfortable race-car interior along with track performance from its 562hp 5.2L V10. The car boasts a 0-60 MPH time of 3.6 seconds, with a claimed top speed of 204 MPH. With such performance and comfort on offer, the Audi R8 finds similar competition in the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Mercedes-AMG GT, and the BMW M8.
"The Audi R8 is equipped with a healthy dose of comfort and performance goodies." - The Car Connection
The Audi R8 Coupe is available in two trims - Base and Performance, with the prices being $148,700 for the Base and $199,800 for the Performance. Interior features on the base and Performance variants are nearly the same, with the top trim getting a host of additional performance parts to support its 602 hp engine. Standard features across both trims include front and rear parking sensors, 20-inch wheels, automatic high beams, power-folding and heated mirrors with auto-dimming, and auto-deploying rear spoiler.
As optional packages, the 2022 R8 gets a Sports Exhaust system ($3,600) that adds a sport exhaust system, sport steering wheel, and Audi drive select with performance mode. The all-new Dynamic package ($12,900) adds 15-inch front and 14-inch rear ceramic disc brakes with 6-piston and 4-piston calipers respectively, 20.5-inch double-spoke rims, and power-adjustable racing shell seats. Last year's packages have been carried over as well.

At $148,700, the standard RWD version of the 2022 Audi R8 is the one we recommend. Its 562 hp V10 engine will suit most buyers. On the inside, the R8 is well-equipped with creature comforts such as heated leather seats, automatic climate control, a digital instrument panel, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a suite of safety features. Among the optional packages, we recommend the Premium package that packs in an upgraded Bang & Olufsen premium audio system and extended leather upholstery with faux suede interior treatments for optimum luxury. The Sport exhaust package is also recommended, for that extra grunt.
"The R8's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic isn't the smoothest gearbox." - Car and Driver
The 2022 Audi R8 is powered by the same engine seen in the 2021 model year - a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10, which gets a bump of 30 hp increasing the output to 562 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Further, there is also an R8 V10 Performance trim available, which gets the same engine but is tuned to deliver 602 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. The car comes mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and RWD, with the Performance model getting Audi's Quattro setup.
The 7-speed S-Tronic automatic transmission system flawlessly delivers power and torque to the rear wheels of the coupe. It is sometimes clunky to operate, and downshifts are hard followed by sudden upshifts. The Base model gets an adaptive suspension setup which offers an excellent ride quality. The Performance model gets a stiffer fixed-damper suspension setup. The handling is slightly off in corners, and one will be surprised as to how civilized this car is in the city.
The steering response is decent, and there's enough feedback from the chassis. The car also gets optional dynamic steering ($1,400) that adds a speed-dependent variable-speed ratio for more feedback and control. The optional carbon-fiber front sway bar ($1,100) reduces weight by 4.4 kgs, to make the car lighter and quicker. The 2022 Audi R8 Base completes the 0-60 MPH sprint in just 3.6 seconds, whereas the Performance model takes only 3.2 seconds. The top speed is rated at 204 MPH.

The 2021 BMW M8 is the most powerful car here, making well over 600 horses, unlike the rivals that range in the 500 hp mark. The GT coupe has the least power output at 523 hp. The 911 and the R8 have a difference of 10 hp between them. Peak torque kicks in the earliest on the M8, as low as 1,800 rpm. The 911 sprints from 0-60 MPH in just 2.7 seconds, followed by the Bimmer at 3.0 seconds. This performance advantage on the Porsche comes at an additional expense of nearly $26,000.
"An old-school supercar with a naturally-aspirated V-10, the Audi R8 guzzles gas." - The Car Connection
The 2022 R8 is a practical sports car in every sense apart from fuel economy. With a slight bump in its power output over the 2021 model, fuel economy for the 2022 Audi R8 will reduce slightly than last year. There are no EPA estimates for the 2022 R8 as of now. The 2021 model delivered fuel economy numbers of 14 MPG in the city, 23 MPG out on the highway, and 17 mpg combined.
On the other hand, the Performace trim of the car will return the same fuel efficiency as last year, at 13 MPG city, 20 MPG highway, and 16 MPG combined. Fuel costs for the Base R8 come around $3,400 on an average per year for a driving range of 15,000 miles. The car comes with a 21.9-gallon tank and uses only premium fuel. The 2021 R8 Base had a combined range of 373 miles.

The 2022 M8 is seriously efficient, with a combined mileage of 22 MPG, and gets an adequately sized 20.1-gallon tank. It returns close to 20 MPG in the city (that's the highway mileage of the other two cars). The Porsche 911 Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GT both offer the same fuel economy numbers but the AMG GT offers a better range due to the larger 19.8-gallon fuel tank. Nonetheless, the R8 is equipped with the highest fuel capacity of 21.9 gallons.
"Audi builds the R8 around the driver without much consideration for the passenger." - The Car Connection
Minimalistic, but useful. The 2022 Audi R8 coupe has race-car-like interiors that emanate comfort and luxury everywhere. Dressed in leather which is available in several color combinations that provide a sporty contrast to the interior ambiance of the car add to the experience. Further, the dashboard, doors, and roofline have metallic inserts that provide a lustrous finish to the opulent interiors. The seats are not very comfortable.
Dual-zone climate control and leather upholstery are standard and the leather upholstery comes in many colors too. This luxury coupe is well-integrated with technology that helps to customize and comfort the passenger's drive experience. Further changes introduced in 2022, is the new Dynamic Package, which includes new upgraded racing seats with Nappa leather upholstery. The Audi R8 coupe comes with a cargo capacity of 8.0 cu.ft.

Compared to the competition, the Porsche 911 Turbo and the M8 can seat 4 occupants as compared to the Mercedes-AMG GT and the Audi R8 which only offer 2. The Mercedes offers the most headroom in the front, whereas the M8 has the frontest legroom. The BMW also comes with the most cargo capacity of 14.8 cu-ft. Coming to the infotainment system, the 2022 Audi R8 is equipped differently and has a very futuristic design.
A 12.3-inch touchscreen virtual cockpit gauge cluster doubles up as the common screen for the instrumentation and the infotainment system. The driver controls both these aspects using the buttons that are embedded on the steering wheel. The unit is easy to use and responses to touch inputs are quick. Smartphone integration is seamless and navigation is crisp. The other infotainment features available are mentioned below:
"Though understated, the Audi R8's silhoutte still looks the super part." - KBB
The 2022 Audi R8 gets no changes to its exterior design and retains the sharp design language. Like most supercars, the R8 is elegant, but at the same time has the typical mean look thanks to its low profile and the mid-engine layout. At the front, the car features a trapezoidal honeycomb grille, flanked with large air ducts on either side with the sharp and long LED headlights with DRLs. The front also gets an aluminum lip spoiler. The hood is short and angles down at the front.
Along the side, the car features 20-inch Evo design bi-color anthracite wheels that sit in front of large air intakes that direct cold air to the engine. The roof tapers down well at the rear to end up just before the spoiler. The glass panel shows the meaty V10 engine, and this section can be lit up with LED lights to do some more showoff at night. At the rear, theR8 features a honeycomb mesh with sleek LED taillights and a fixed/electronically-controlled spoiler. Two huge exhaust outlets complete the sporty look of the R8.
The 2022 Audi R8 gets a Carbon exterior package ($5,600) that adds carbon sigma sideblades and carbon-fiber trim for the engine compartment. Also, LED headlights with Audi laser light are an optional extra for $3,500. The R8's curb weight has not been disclosed as of yet, but there are no changes to the car's other dimensions. The 2022 R8 is 174 inches long, with a wheelbase of 104.3 inches. A total of 9 color options are available, apart from Audi's exclusive gloss and matte paint color.

In terms of dimensions, the M8 has the longest wheelbase of the above measuring 111.3 inches. That's 7 inches more than that on the R8. The M8 is also the longer car here, with a length that's at least 11.5 inches longer than the rivals. The Audi R8 is the shortest of them in terms of height. In terms of curb weight, the BMW weights the most, at 4,295 lbs. That's nearly 550 lbs more than the 911 and the GT. Some exterior features on the R8 include:
The 2022 Audi R8 has not been crash-tested yet by either the NHTSA or the IIHS. The R8 is a carryover model, but safety ratings for the 2021 model are not available as well. The Audi R8 uses the Modular Sports System platform which it shares with the Huracan.
The 2022 Audi R8 uses a multi-material Audi Space Frame that uses aluminum with sections made from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers. Audi offers just enough in the R8 in terms of basic safety needs, but there are limited driver-assistance features that are available. Some safety features include:
The 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo is the most direct competitor to the Audi R8. The 911 Turbo S makes slightly more power and a lot more torque, which converts into a quicker 0-60 mph time on the Porsche. Like the R8, the 911 is also a good city car, and its handling dynamics are slightly more sporty than the R8. Unlike the 911's long list of customizable options, the R8 has limited trims and options available to choose from. For $26,000 more, the 911 comes with performance, brand value, luxury, and more standard options; and we surely recommend that.
The 2022 BMW M8 is now available in only two trims, and it makes a ton more power than the R8. Despite being the heavier car, the M8 has better performance runtimes and its driving dynamics are far more engaging than the Audi's. The M8 also makes up for an excellent city car with its high fuel efficiency. The BMW offers more standard and optional features than the Audi R8, and it also has a long list of safety features. All this combined with the car's more affordable pricing makes the M8 an excellent choice over the R8.
The R8's engine is powerful and refined, whereas its interiors are minimalistic in nature but loaded with the craftsmanship and innovative technology. Priced at $148,700 and set to release in the fall of 2021, the 2022 Audi R8 justifies its price tag with its sharp performance, stylish interior, sleek infotainment system, and overall appeal the car has.
