Overall Rating
In a time when wagons have become a rare sight and only a few premium brands do show the guts to produce and sell them, the Audi RS6 has been a shining example of how one can make a station wagon interesting and fast.
In a time when wagons have become a rare sight and only a few premium brands do show the guts to produce and sell them, the Audi RS6 has been a shining example of how one can make a station wagon interesting and fast. Introduced back in 2002, the Audi RS6 is currently in its fourth generation model. Even though it is an extended version of the standard yet sporty S6 sedan, it is actually sportier and more exciting to drive than the sedan and packs in some impressive performance stats. The fourth-generation model is also the first one to use an advanced hybrid powertrain that comprises a Riemen Starter Generator and a 48-volt electric system.
The Audi RS6 Avant will be available in a single and well-equipped trim. We would recommend the Driver Assistance package and the Executive package for an even better experience with the car.

The 2022 Audi RS6 Avant will essentially be a carryover model from the 2021 model year. Hence, all the features and the optional packages will remain similar as well. The wagon is offered in a single and quite well-equipped trim only with a steep price tag of $116,500. Going for the optional extras results in a quick increase in the price tag as well. Apart from being sporty, the wagon offers a plethora of techs and features inside along with superb luxury. Some of the standard features include premium leather upholstery, wireless phone charger with a signal booster, quad-zone climate control, Audi Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreen displays with integrated navigation, and power-adjustable steering wheel among other features. Some of the optional features include the Driver Assistance package, Side Assist package, Executive package, an upgraded Bang & Olufsen audio system, carbon-ceramic brakes, and Black optics package.

The 2022 Audi RS6 Avant gets a crazy powertrain under its long hood and makes this station wagon nothing less than a full-fledged track machine. The powertrain is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo DOHC TFSI V8 unit paired to a mild-hybrid system that incorporates a Riemen-Starter-Generator and a 48-volt electric system. Together, the powertrain dishes out an outlandish 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of maximum torque. The power figure might not touch the 600-bhp mark, yet it is more than capable enough to propel the wagon to 60mph from a standstill within 3.1 seconds and completes the standing quarter-mile within 11.5 seconds flat. The top speed is limited to 155mph, unfortunately. Yet it can be increased to 190 mph via the Dynamic Package Plus option. Despite being mated to a hybrid system, the motor is quite rev-happy and has that traditional deep rumble that almost all V8s are famous for. Owing to the strict emission norms, the exhaust system dampens the true and angry nature of the motor yet with a few tweaks here and there along with an aftermarket exhaust system, the motor turns into an angry, mile-munching monster that always shows off its twin-turbo system with the beautiful spooling sounds.

The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon is nothing short of overwhelming in terms of sheer performance and insane power figures. It houses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 too but doesn’t have any electrical system to assist it. Hence, it is just pure and raw V8 muscle all the way. Considering that, the wagon dishes out an impressive 603 horsepower along with 627 lb-ft of maximum torque resulting in a 0-60mph time of 3.4 seconds and a quarter-mile timing of 11.1 seconds flat. The Biturbo V8 of the Benz has a sonorous exhaust note too, but the RS6 Avant’s sounds do appeal better. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S Sport Turismo houses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 under its hood too and whips out the highest power output of 620 horsepower as compared to the rivals here. As is the case with almost every Porsche vehicle, it is an absolute performance machine with a gut-slapping 0-60 acceleration time of 2.9 seconds. It also has the highest top speed of 196mph here among the rivals.
A high-performance yet practical station wagon housing a crazy twin-turbo V8 under its hood and dishes out close to 600 horsepower, doesn’t sound quite a fuel-efficient vehicle right? Well, it isn’t. The 2022 Audi RS6 Avant is a thirsty wagon and returns an average of just 15mpg in the cities, 22mpg out on the highways, and a meager 17mpg of combined mileage. It gets a big gasoline tank of 19.3 gallons yet the driving range numbers are just about acceptable at the most with 289 miles of city driving range and 328 miles of combined range.

The Mercedes-Benz E 63 S Wagon might take you by surprise with its fuel economy figures since it makes more power and torque than the RS6 Avant and is devoid of any mild hybrid system, unlike the latter. The MPG numbers might be marginally better, but when combined with the sizable 21.1-gallon gas tank, the driving range figures are decent enough for a hassle-free city drive and less interrupting highway drives. The Porsche Panamera has almost identical MPG numbers to the RS6 Avant, yet its huge 23.7-gallon gas tank results in an impressive city driving range of 355 miles, 497 miles of highway driving range, and 402 miles of combined range.
One might wonder that how comfortable or luxurious a performance-specced wagon such as the RS6 Avant is going to be, yet the vehicle has quite some surprises in store for the buyer. The wagon gets almost all the major comfort and convenience features you’d expect inside a wagon carrying a price tag of $116,500 yet you can further enhance your experience by opting for the additional packages. The front seats are heated and ventilated with power adjustments while the rear seats offer excellent headroom and legroom along with commendable cushioning to cocoon the passengers with ultimate comfort. The quad-zone automatic climate control works flawlessly and manages to maintain a comfortable ambient temperature even in the harshest climatic conditions. The cargo capacity is decent at 30 cu-ft and can be increased further by folding the rear seats. The all-around visibility is decent owing to the daily big windows while the rear-view camera comes in handy in tight spots.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S wagons’ interior is identical to the regular E-Class sedan and comes with a similar level of comfort and luxuries. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable and provide adequate support and bolstering for some spirited driving on road and around the tracks. The dashboard design looks ultra-modern and comes with Mercedes-Benz’s new retro-modern steering wheel design. There is an adequate amount of headroom and legroom on offer along with a practical cabin and a commendable cargo space. The Porsche Panamera wagon comes with a modern and better interior as compared to the previous models of the vehicle. Even though the interior dimensions are not disclosed by Porsche, the cabin of the wagon is quite spacious and offers adequate headroom and legroom to accommodate all the passengers comfortably. There is a handsome amount of features offered as standard too yet the optional features make it quite pricier than the RS6 Avant.
Some interior features are:
The exterior of the Audi RS6 Avant looks nothing like a sane wagon and gets a radical design language. Even though it is based on the A6 and the S6 sedan, the overall design exudes aggressiveness. The front grille is completely blacked out and gets a honeycomb design while the front bumper has some sharp design cues. The matrix LED headlamp units do adorn the front grille nicely and give the vehicle an even more aggressive stance upfront. The massive air dams allow for enhanced cooling of the tires and optimized airflow. The side profile is neat apart from the lower skirtings that give an appeal of a performance body kit while the rear end looks as dramatic as the front end. The wagon sits quite low at 4.5-inch of ground clearance while it can be increased with the help of the adaptive suspension.

The Mercedes-AMG E 63 S wagon looks quite fast even when it’s standing still yet it looks way less dramatic than the RS6 Avant. The new frowning front grille design of the vehicle sure looks quite aggressive in the sedan yet it feels like an afterthought in the wagon. Apart from that, there are strong character lines all around the vehicle giving it the much necessary road presence. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S Sport Turismo wagon is what a perfect blend of a sedan and a wagon looks like. It might not look as intimidating or aggressive as the RS6 Avant or the AMG E 63 S yet it has a subtle sporty appeal to itself. The overall design is more aerodynamically efficient than the other two rivals here with a low roofline, more width, and a longer wheelbase. The rear-end of the vehicle deserves all the attention with a rather complex yet appealing design along with a hatch-style cargo door.
Some exterior features are:
The 2022 Audi RS6 Avant doesn’t have any crash test ratings and neither does the previous model. But, the 2021 Audi A6 Allroad did receive a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA while the IIHS gave it a perfect “Good” rating, making for a strong safety aspect of the wagon. Apart from the impressive safety ratings, the wagon gets a handful of safety techs on offer as standard including Lane departure warning and a 360-degree camera system. Sadly though, almost all the advanced driver assistance features do come as optional extras.
Some standout safety features include:
The Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S wagon gives serious competition to the RS6 Avant in terms of pricing and performance. Yet, it is the Avant that lurches forward with a quicker acceleration time and a better overall design than the AMG E63 S. On the inside, both the wagons go head-to-head in terms of comfort, features, and plushness along with cutting-edge design as well. The E 63 S has a bigger cargo area as compared to the RS6 Avant, making it slightly more practical than the latter.
The Porsche Panamera Turbo S Sport Turismo is sportier and a more performance-oriented wagon than the RS6 Avant yet the latter offers a perfect combination of comfort, practicality, and performance. The Panamera has quicker acceleration times, handles better, and is more aerodynamic than the RS6 Avant yet it lacks cargo space.
The Audi RS6 Avant is purely for those who agree to a wagon-style body and still crave raw and outlandish performance. Apart from the overwhelming performance aspect, the vehicle also offers exceptional levels of comfort and plushness that you’s get from the regular A6 sedan. It fails to offer a decent fuel economy but the same is the case with almost every other performance wagon in the segment. Overall, if you’re in for some serious fun out on the tracks, some gut-slapping acceleration, and the thrill of driving a sportscar along with the comfort of a full-fledged luxury sedan, the RS6 Avant might be your soul automobile.
