The 2022 Audi S4 remains majorly unchanged over last year and features the same specs as before. It produces 349 horsepower and does 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. It is available for sale in three trims for an MSRP of $51,900 and the interior gets a new carbon fiber trim this year.
Audi has launched the 2022 S4 Sedan in the market at a price of $51,900 (exclusive of a $1,045 destination charge) with no major changes compared to the 2021 model year. The only big difference comes in some updates to the carbon fiber interior trims. The 2022 Audi S4 features a 3L turbocharged V6 engine that produces 349 hp and features the Quattro AWD system as standard and does the 0-60 MPH sprint in mere 4.4 seconds.
The 2022 S4 shares the same specs as the S5 Sportback that costs $3,000 more. The Audi S5 Sportback is only differentiated with its coupe-like roofline from the S4. As for the release date, Audi has already launched the 2022 S4 and we expect the deliveries to begin by the end of 2021. The Audi S4 competes in the sports compact sedan segment against the likes of BMW M340i, Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400, and Mercedes-AMG C43 sedan.

The price of the 2022 Audi S4 starts at $51,900 for the base trim which gets a new Black Optics Package that swaps out the regular exterior design. There are blacked-out exterior details such as the front grille and headlight accents along with dark 19-inch Y-spoke wheels. The powertrain and drivetrain are standard throughout the trim levels though so you’ll get the thrill of the performance right from the base Premium trim.
Going up the trim ladder, the Premium Plus trim adds more technology to the mix for $3,600. It includes the Audi Virtual cockpit plus and a handful of other safety functions. The Prestige will set you back by an additional $4,700 over the Premium Plus trim and retails at an MSRP of $60,200. It adds more creature comforts to it which include the coveted matrix LED headlights park assist, amongst other features.

Though the 2022 Audi S4 Prestige trim adds plenty of the latest cutting-edge technology, it appreciates a lot in terms of its price. The Premium Plus trim on the other hand offers more value to the car and makes it feel worth the additional investment due to its long list of safety and driver assistance features and the Audi Virtual Cockpit instrument panel.
"The Audi S4 is quick and athletic, but it's not as engaging as rival sports sedans" - CarAndDriver
Under the hood, the 2022 Audi S4 retains its powertrain from the 2021 model year. It features a 3.0L turbocharged V6 unit and it dishes out a healthy 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque as standard. There is also no manual transmission on offer and transmission duties are taken care of by an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Power is sent to all four wheels as standard through the Quattro AWD system.
There are different drive settings that alter the power delivery and the throttle response of the car. That being said, both the engine responses and exhaust notes leave a bit to be desired. The transmission responds quickly but the car feels docile on the whole. The cornering stability is pretty good with accurate steering responses. The ride is quite comfortable as standard and can be further upgraded with the optional adaptive suspension.
The 2022 S4 is pretty quick off its feet as the 0-60 mph comes up in a brisk 4.4 seconds while the quarter-mile time is also impressive at 12.8 seconds. The top speed is limited to 130 mph as standard but can be bumped to 155 mph optionally. That is far better than the inline-4 2022 A4 and almost identical to the Audi S5 Sportback. The braking performance of the S4 is impressive too, halting it in the 60-0 mph braking test within 112 ft.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG C43 has the best power and torque figures among the rivals here. The C43 along with the M340i are the sportiest of the lot, and both have pretty identical acceleration timings. The Infiniti on the other hand has the highest power output, about 50 hp more than the Audi, but still is marginally slower off the mark. The 2022 S4 is the most affordable one here as well, while the other three rivals cost about $5,000 more without much appreciation in the performance aspect.
The 2022 Audi S4 retains its EPA-rated fuel economy figures from the last year’s model and returns a maximum of 28 MPG on the highways and 23 MPG combined. The 15.3-gallon fuel tank capacity falls a bit short as it manages to offer just around 350 miles of combined range, which is below par in terms of segment standards. While it is not as frugal as the mild-hybrid powertrain of the A4, it is above average as per the segment standards.

The 2022 BMW M340i is the most fuel-efficient car on the list by a considerable margin. The Infiniti and Audi sedans have similar fuel economy figures but the larger gas tank of the Q50 Red Sport 400 aids it in offering the massive range. The C43 is the least efficient of the lot and despite the larger fuel tank capacity, it has a range similar to that of the S4. The Q50 and the M340i offer the longest ranges, with the Red Sport 400 offering around 90 miles of extended range.
"Smooth when it needs to be and sporty when you want it to be, the S4 doesn't make you choose between luxury and performance." - MotorTrend
The interior of the 2022 Audi S4 sedan gets no updates, which means it continues to offer a sleek and elegant design. The seats and door panels are tastefully designed with leather and suede materials, and the overall build & material quality is top-notch as well. The dashboard design looks fancy and modern but the center console looks a bit busy with numerous buttons for the controls.
The seat bolstering is quite aggressive and the front seats could be overly stiff for some. The front seats are sports seats featuring heating and memory functions while the rear seats also get a heating function. Taller passengers can be seated comfortably even at the back as there is a decent amount of space available for both the front and rear seat occupants. The wide-opening doors ease ingress and egress but the 12 cu-ft of trunk capacity is tight as per the segment standards.

Comparing with the rivals, the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 has the best front-seat headroom and legroom. The M340i has a simple-looking cabin with decent space for both the front and rear passengers and also has the best cargo capacity on the list. Both the Mercedes and Audi have similarly sized cabins and trunks, while the Infiniti offers a marginally larger trunk. One of the strengths of the Audi S4 cabin is the standard 10.1-inch MMI infotainment screen.
The rotary controller for the MMI infotainment has also been dropped, which means one might have to lean a bit to reach the far corners of the screen. The MMI interface is intuitive and quick to respond and is quite feature-packed right from the base Premium trim. As standard, there is a 10-speaker audio system on offer, and upgrading to the Premium Plus trim opens up the option to choose for a Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, which is standard on the Prestige trim.
"With its dapper aesthtic and impeccable build quality, the Audi S4 is definitely built to impress" - CarBuzz
Similar to the specs and interior of the 2022 Audi S4, the exterior gets no changes as well. The front grille draws all the attention along with the LED headlamp units and the large air dams. There are smooth lines running all over the sedan’s exterior but the front end looks quite sharp, especially with the matrix LED headlights. Various aluminum accents, a subtle faux diffuser housing the quad exhaust tips and an integrated spoiler sets apart the S4 from the A4. There is also an optional carbon fiber spoiler available for $995.
There are no new color options available for this year with the same 8 color schemes on sale this year as well. The optional metallic colors cost an additional $595 and the Turbo Blue color featured in our images, is the one that looks sporty yet subtle. The Y-spoke 18-inch wheels look spectacular while the Black Optic Package swaps out the grey-colored wheels for a set of black-colored ones. For another $800, Audi offers larger 19-inch wheels with summer performance tires.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG C43 is a true low-slung sedan owing and rides about an inch lower than the Audi S4. The BMW M340i has the maximum ground clearance, while the Q50 Red Sport offers a similar ride height. The Infiniti is also about 2-inch longer than the Audi and yet weighs about the same. All the sports sedans in this comparison weigh roughly the same as there are not many differences in the exterior dimensions of the car.
Being a performance-oriented sedan, the 2022 Audi S4 sells in much lesser volumes than the regular A4 sedan. Hence it doesn’t have any safety ratings from both the NHTSA and the IIHS testing agencies. That being said, the Audi A4, on which the S4 is based, received a perfect 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA while also bagging the "Top Safety Pick" accolade from the IIHS. Audi has filled the sedan to its brim with active safety features to keep you safe at all times.
The BMW M340i is both quicker and expensive than the Audi S4, but the S4 has a more comfortable ride. The BMW also has a bigger trunk than the S4 and is far more fuel-efficient as well. On the exterior part, the S4 feels sportier with its sharp appeal and a compact appearance, while the interior has more standard features. So, if you are fine living with a smaller trunk and spend additionally on the fuel bills, the 2022 S4 makes more sense.
To begin with, the S4 is much more affordable than the Q50 Red Sport. And while the Red Sport 400 has a much higher power output, both offer very similar acceleration performance and fuel efficiency. The Q50 has a more spacious front seat and a marginally larger trunk to offer. That being said, the long list of cutting-edge technology and supreme build quality is what tilts the scales towards the Audi S4.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 is more powerful than the Audi S4 and hence is marginally quicker off the mark as well. Apart from that, the C 43 is at par with the S4 in terms of features and comfort but is costlier than the latter. Also, the Mercedes gulps more fuel and has fewer standard features when compared to the Audi. Therefore, the 2022 Audi S4 offers more value for money than the AMG C 43.
Like the previous year’s model, the 2022 Audi S4 is power-packed along with a feature-rich cabin. It also carries a lower base price as compared to its rivals and doesn’t compromise on the performance. Its minor shortcomings are very easy to overlook when considering the feature-loaded and comfortable cabin it has to offer. This makes the S4 a well-balanced car that does well in every aspect and offers great value to buyers.
