2022 BMW 3 Series Review

Priced at $41,450, the 2022 BMW 3-Series carries on unchanged from 2021 apart from shuffling of standard features and additional equipment. The car continues to be offered in the same three trim levels as last year with no mechanical changes. The car continues to be powered by the same turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine, with the option to choose between an AWD and an RWD setup. As standard, the car comes equipped with LED lights, a moonroof, heated seats, and a few active safety features.

Not many cars have had the reputation that has been enjoyed by the BMW 3 Series. For 2022, BMW carries on with the core formula of the 3 Series with a few minor changes on offer. For 2022, the BMW 3 Series starts at a price of $41,450 and is available in a total of three basic trim levels, a normal luxury sedan, an electric 3 Series, and the M340i. The standard model 3 Series tops out at $43,450 for the xDrive model which is the AWD version of the 3 Series.

Powered by a turbocharged 2.0L 255 hp I-4 engine, the 3 Series has been known for its consistent refinement and composed ride quality throughout. The 3 Series on the inside comes packed with modern tech and creature comforts such as LED headlights, heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power-adjustable front sports seats. With its right combination of performance, luxury, and efficiency, the 3 Series goes up against the Lexus IS 300, the Audi A4, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

"What 3-Series makes the most sense for you depends on your needs." -The Car Connection

The 2022 BMW 3-Series is available as a sedan and can be opted in 3 trim levels - the 330i, the M340i, and the 330e - of which the M340i and the 330e have been reviewed separately. Pricing for the 330i ranges from $41,450 for the RWD and $43,450 for the AWD variant. A destination fee of $995 is extra. As standard, the 330i comes well-equipped with features that include LED lights, automatic climate control, simulated leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto with a 10-speaker audio system.

The 330i also comes with a few optional packages. The Convenience package ($650) adds keyless entry and lumbar support, whereas the Premium 2 package ($1,400) builds on the Convenience package with gesture control, a heated steering wheel, and heated front seats or heated front and rear seats that costs $350 extra. A Dynamic Handling package ($2,450) adds an M sport differential with adaptive suspension and M sport brakes.

Buying Advice

Priced at $43,450, the 2022 BMW 330i xDrive is the one that we recommend. The 330i has enough power for most requirements, and the all-wheel drive helps with better control of the car.  The 330i is also well-equipped in terms of features, from 18-inch wheels, LED lights, sunroof, to leather upholstery and an 8.8-inch touchscreen. We also suggest the M Sport Package for its unique exterior trim and the Driver Assistance package for better safety equipment.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

"The 3-Series offers two smooth and potent gas-powered engines." - Car and Driver

The 2022 BMW 3-Series is powered by the same turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine seen on the 2021 model. This engine makes 255 hp and has a torque output of 295 lb-ft, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and comes with either RWD or AWD. The AWD model costs $2,000 extra. The engine is refined and power delivery on the 330i is linear. The 8-speed automatic transmission is very precise and extremely responsive.

Apart from the automatic transmission, the car also comes with steering-mounted paddle shifters as well as launch control. Power delivery is also controlled through the available driving modes that include Comfort, Eco, and Sport. In terms of handling, the 330i is among the most stable and controlled cars in this segment. The chassis is responsive, and the tires offer a good grip around corners. The standard suspension on the car is on the softer side for more comfort, and this causes some body roll as well.

The steering, on the other hand, feels less responsive and has limited feedback, thus limiting your confidence to go faster or attack corners better. The Dynamic Handling package does make a difference, especially with the adaptive suspension that helps with better control and offers more feedback. The 0-60 MPH time on the 2022 3-Series is decent, at 5.6 seconds with a rated top speed of 155 MPH. The quarter-mile comes up in 14 seconds.

Despite the BMW and the Merc having identical power output figures, it's the BMW that is the better performer of the two. The BMW also benefits with its peak torque kicking in as early as 1,550 rpm. The A4 however has the quickest 0-60 MPH time of 5.2 seconds, followed by the BMW and the Merc. The Lexus is the slowest, at 6.9 seconds. In terms of pricing, the IS 300 is the most affordable car in the lot. It is around $2,500 cheaper than the BMW.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

With AWD, this efficiency drops to 25 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined. The car's 15.6-gallon fuel capacity gives it a 468 miles combined range. The BMW is the most efficient car here, with its 30 MPG combined mileage. The C-Class follows in next, with a combined mileage of 28 MPG. The A4 is just 1 MPG behind. whereas the IS 300 is the least efficient car with its combined mileage of 24 MPG. In terms of tank capacity, the Merc and the Lexus both have a large 17.4-gallon tank, whereas the BMW and the Audi get smaller 15-gallon tanks. This affects the overall range on offer, despite having a better fuel economy.

Interior
7.5/10

"High-quality, low-fuss." -KBB

The 2022 BMW 3-Series's interior is extremely luxurious and premium. Leather, soft-touch plastics, and a brushed metal finish all come together to welcome the passengers in standard German luxury. Build quality all around is tremendously nice, and the controls are not only logically placed but are also robust and premium. The interior is modern and comes with a lot of useful features and creature comforts as well. For 2022, the car comes standard with ambient lighting.

The standard sports seats are plush and are well-bolstered to provide extra support. In the front, legroom is immense, and the seats come with extensive adjustability options. Rear seats are similarly comfortable but have less support. The rear seating is best suited for two, as the center tunnel eats up into the available legroom. Heated front and rear seats are available as an option. Features such as automatic climate control, heated steering wheel and keyless entry all help provide a comfortable ride experience.

Getting in and out of the Bimmer is easy thanks to the wide-opening doors and ample headroom. Visibility throughout the cabin is decent. The 3-Series offers a decent balance between available interior space and cargo capacity. In the front, the Lexus offers the most legroom, whereas the A4 has the most headroom. At the back, the A4 offers slightly larger leg space and the BMW offers the most headroom. All in all, the Merc is the preferred car here thanks to its comfortable seating and excellent use of interior space.

The infotainment system comprises a ‘Live Cockpit Plus’ 5.1-inch instrument cluster with BMW's iDrive 7 that is now voice-controlled. There is also the 8.8-inch touchscreen display that is sightly complex to use thanks to its extensive menu options that one gets lost in. Touch input responses are quick, and the user interface is appealing. Navigation now is standard and comes with OTA updates for map data. The infotainment unit can be touch controlled or through a rotary knob and buttons. Some interior features on the 2022 3-Series are:

  • Leather seats
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Automatic climate control
  • Ambient lighting
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Voice control
  • Bluetooth
  • Satellite radio

Exterior
9.0/10

"Most 3-Series sedans are conservative." - The Car Connection

The 2022 BMW 3-Series does not get any changes to its exterior styling. The car's design is quite conservative among luxury compact sedans, and that is not bad at all. At the front, the 3-Series features the signature kidney grille which is flanked with two LED headlamps. On the lower part, the 3-Series features a Y-shaped body styling element with a 3-line lower grille. The entire headlight and grille have a flow to their design and that gives it a symmetric look. Along the side, the car's beltline is inclined upwards towards the rear taillights. This combined with its sharp bodywork and good-looking alloy wheels give the standard 330i a very sporty look.

At the rear, the design is extremely simple with its large rear spoiler proportional LED taillights. At the bottom, a dual exhaust setup completes the 330i's look. On the 2022 BMW 3-Series, the optional M sport exterior package adds a  very aggressive-looking front and with 19-inch alloy wheels. The front bumper is redesigned and has an overall sharper styling and features foglights that sit well in two large inlets. The 3-Series weighs 3,560 lbs, and is 185.7 inches long with a wheelbase of 112.2 inches. The 2022 BMW 3-Series comes in a total of 12 color options. Some colors range from $500-$1,500.

2022 BMW 3-Series vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is pretty much all-new for 2022, equipped with more luxury and features on the inside. Both the 3 Series and the C-Class make the same power and torque, but the C-Class comes with a mild hybrid system that gives it a slight boost of 20 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. The main difference between these two cars lies in the interior. The Merc comes well-equipped with a ton of creature comforts and features that are found as optional on the 3-Series, and the Merc overall is a more comfortable car. With similar pricing, the Merc offers more value for money over the 3-Series.

2022 BMW 3-series vs 2022 Audi A4

The 2022 Audi A4 with the 45 TFSI engine makes similar power and torque as the 3 Series, but its 40 TFSI engine is no match. The A4 is lighter than the 3 Series, and this helps the car with quicker performance runs over the BMW. The A4 is like the 3-Series in the handling department, and both make for excellent city cars. The A4 is slightly less economical than the 3-Series. On the inside, like luxury cars, both of them are similar in their features and comfort. All in all, though the BMW offers an athletic ride, the A4 triumphs with its affordable pricing, standard AWD, and comfortable interior.

Final Verdict

The 2022 BMW 3-Series has everything one would ask from a compact luxury sedan: performance, efficiency, comfortable and premium interior, excellent styling, and advanced safety features. However, the rival cars have gotten much ahead in terms of standard equipment offered and this just leaves the 3-Series to be a capable car. At $41,450, this car is pricy for what it packs in and does not offer much value, unlike the 2022 C-Class that is similarly priced.
