About 2022 BMW 4 Series

4.0

Overall Rating

The 2022 BMW 4-Series coupe is unchanged this year and comes at an MSRP of $46,795. Apart from the two new color options and additional features, there aren't any changes made this year. The 2022 4series is powered by a 2L turbocharged 255 hp inline-4 engine that can do the 0-60 mph sprint in 5.5 seconds.

The 4-Series Coupe is something that at first glance looks like a 3-Series with fastback styling and stout nose, but in reality, it is quite a different car. The 2021 model year saw the 4-Series enter its second generation wherein major changes were brought to the whole car from the exterior, interior, and powertrain as well. Therefore, this year, it doesn't feature major changes apart from the standard ambient interior lighting and the option to get the M440i coupe in the RWD guise. Prices for the 2022 4 Series Coupe starts from $45,800, excluding a $995 destination fee.

Additionally, there are two new Brooklyn Grey Mettalic and Aventurin Red Metallic colors added to the roster, while the optional Premium package now also includes power lumbar support, a head-up display, and gesture controls for the infotainment system along with the standard faux-leather upholstery which is now perforated. The 2022 BMW 4-Series is available in just a single trim guise with both RWD and AWD drivetrain apart from the convertible and the more powerful M440i. The 2022 4-Series competes against other sports coupes like Audi A5, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, and Lexus RC 300.

The 430i with the xDrive system is the choice to go for, as in terms of features both 430i and 430i xDrive share almost everything. With the all-wheel-drive drivetrain, you’d have your best driving experience without compromising fun. Of course, the drivetrain would cost a couple of thousand dollars more but it will be worth it.

Most beautiful BMW series 4

Pros

I love that my car has alot of miles, I love the size of my car.

Cons

I don't like the color I wish to get a respray., I don't like the tinted windows

I bought my BMW car back in 2023. At first I was skeptical because I bought the car from a market place. I must say this is the best purchase I've made. I milage on my car is far most the best. Although I don't quit like the color but I can always get that changed. I loved the car space. Very easy to clean and maintain. The speed is very fast.

The 2022 BMW 4-Series Coupe comes available in two trims, the standard 430i and the more powerful M440i which comes with a more powerful powertrain. There are three different body styles that you can go for which include a Coupe, a Convertible, and a Gran Coupe which adds two doors and slightly more practicality to it. All these body styles are now available with both the RWD and AWD drivetrains as BMW now offers BMW M440i in RWD configuration.

Buying Advice

The 430i with the xDrive system is the choice to go for, as in terms of features both 430i and 430i xDrive are identical. We would also recommend getting the $1,300 Premium package.

With the all-wheel-drive drivetrain, you get added practicality in adverse weather conditions and yet do not lose out on much fun. Also, opting for the Premium Package will add more value to the car by addition of gesture control for climate control, heated steering wheel & front seats, lumbar support, and keyless entry.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

"While it offers a premium cabin and punchy powertrains, the 4-Series doesn't deliver the joyful handling we expected." Caranddriver

The standard power unit on the 2022 BMW 4-Series is a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 engine that makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft torque. The M440i variant reviewed separately comes with a bigger engine- BMW’s B58 engine is a 3.0L turbo Inline-6 unit that uses a 48V mild-hybrid system.

The Inline-6 produces 382 hp and 369 lb-ft torque. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard which powers the rear wheels. The engine output of the base powertrain may not seem that impressive on paper, but it offers the highest torque in the segment and is pretty quick in real-world conditions. The base powertrain is extremely smooth and responsive, which is further enhanced with the hybrid system in the M440i.

If even these figures do not suffice your hunger for power, there is also a 3L twin-turbo V6 that produces 473 hp and 406 lb-ft that powers the 2022 BMW M4. But unless you need outright performance all the time, the 4-series with its standard powertrain and the softer sprung suspension feels perfect for the daily commute. There was a bump in power and torque figures of the base engine by 7 hp and 37 lb-ft last year with the introduction of the second generation.

While RWD is standard, xDrive AWD setup is available for an additional $2,000 sum. The standard engine takes the 4 Series from standstill to 60 MPH in 5.5 seconds. With the inline-6 engine, the time dips further to 4.3 seconds for the 0-60 MPH run. The car tops out at 155 MPH with the larger inline-6 engine while the base 430i trim has a top speed of 130 MPH.

The BMW M4 speeds to 60 MPH in 4.1 seconds and achieves a top speed of 155 MPH.

Audi has the most amount of power on offer and is also the fastest to 60 MPH, but the BMW 4-Series has the highest torque on offer. It lags behind marginally in the acceleration test against the like of the Mercedes C-Class Coupe and Audi A5 but is far quicker than the Lexus.

It is also much more affordable than the Mercedes and is only about $1,750 pricier than the Audi A5. That said, the A5 gets its Quattro AWD as standard while BMW's xDrive AWD is optional.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

"The 4-Series is a solid BMW, as long as you don't have to look at it." Motortrend

The 2022 BMW 4-Series is the most efficient among the competitive German rivals which it usually goes against. It returns an EPA-rated 25 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highways, and 28 MPG in the combined cycle. The city MPG figure is up 1 MPG since its update last year.

Opting for the AWD drivetrain does not affect the efficiency drastically, and it brings the fuel economy figures to 23/33/27 in city/highway/combined respectively.

The M440i with its mild-hybrid powertrain also returns identical fuel economy figures as that of the base 430i variant.

Both modes get a 15.6-gallon fuel tank that offers a pretty decent maximum range of about 530 miles on the highway. The larger gas tank capacity of the C-Class coupe offers the best driving range here despite the lower MPG ratings. The RC 300 is the least efficient of the lot and in spite of a large fuel tank, it offers a range on par with the BMW.

Interior
7.3/10

"The 4-Series is still the best sporty coupe option on the block for carrying two passengers at the back, thanks to several inches inches more legroom than the rivals." - Carbuzz

Once you step inside the 2022 4 Series Coupe you will instantly recognize it is a BMW. The interior design is more inclined towards the 3-Series and in some ways looks almost identical. The overall design comprises neat lines and the advanced modern tech fitted inside along with this the soft-touch materials and plastics all around give a refined feel of the interior.

The front seats are power-adjustable and come with rear-seat easy entry function as standard. The driver seat is 10-way adjustable and gets memory function, while the faux-leather upholstery is now perforated in nature. There is a three-zone climate control system offered as standard and ambient lighting is also now standard across the lineup for the 2022 model year.

Opting for the Convenience trim adds a keyless entry function and lumbar support for the front seats. On the other hand, the Premium trim brings in heating functionality for the front seats and steering wheel and also adds gesture controls for the climate control system. One can also opt between two aluminium and two fine wood trims for the cabin to better suit your personal tastes.

Although the coupe models aren't known for their practicality, the 2022 4-Series does well in this regard offer enough space for both the front and rear-seat passengers. Add to that the 12 cu-ft of trunk capacity, and hauling a fortnight worth of groceries would be of no concern at all. It can also carry two medium-sized luggage bags with ease for weekend trips.

The front row of the Lexus RC 300 is the most spacious of the lot, offering best-in-class legroom and headroom. However, its rear seat is compromised to an extent that only young kids can manage to get in.

The long wheelbase of the 4-series ensures sufficient space for both front and rear-seat passengers and yet opens up enough space for the cargo. Both the Audi and Mercedes coupes are marginally less roomy than the BMW.

The standard infotainment system of the 2022 BMW 4 Series is nothing short of perfect with a standard 8.8-inch display.

The iDrive 7 interface has smartphone integration in the form of Wireless or Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, real-time traffic and satellite radio as standard. One can also opt for the bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen and a fully digital 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster for another $750.

The standard sound system is a 205-watt 10-speaker from BMW and for a better hearing experience, you can opt for the 600-watt premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system that enhances the music hearing experience for an $875 premium.

Exterior

"Scratch beneath the surface of its ghastly front-end design, and you'll find that the 4-Series is a confortable and engaging sports coupe." - Edmunds

The first thing that you will notice about the new BMW 4 Series is well pretty obvious because of the enormous size that it has. It is the front grille that has been criticized a lot ever since people first saw it in the 2021 model and it stays the same for the 2022 model as well.

The second-generation 4-Series is larger than its predecessor and more aerodynamic as well, with the drag coefficient being 0.25. The 18-inch bi-color wheels are standard which can be upgraded to a range of 19-inch wheels in different styles and color options.

The LED headlights and taillights are smartly designed and signify width, which only complements the long doors. The car is distinctive enough to not be mistaken as a regular 3-Series from any angle whatsoever. The M440i is more aggressive styled and employs larger dual exhaust outlets, while the base 430i gets a power moonroof, cornering lights, LED headlights & adaptive brake lights as standard. Apart from the standard Alpine white and Jet black colors, there are 11 other premium metallic color options including two new Brooklyn Grey Metallic and Aventurin Red Metallic colors.

In terms of dimensions, the 182.7-inch long BMW 4-Series is the shortest of the lot. That being said, its wheelbase is the longest in this comparison which helps it open up the additional space inside its cabin and trunk.

While the radical front-end design from BMW might not be suitable for everybody's tastes, the Audi A5 is the one for those who prefer a clean and sophisticated design. The Mercedes has a sharp styling as well, but it is the RC 300 that will catch most attention on the streets.

Safety

"The redesigned 4-Series is bigger and more luxurious, with garish styling and a greater reliance on technology for performance." - Cargurus

The standard safety equipment that you get in the 2022 BMW 4-Series is quite a lot and is more than enough to keep you safe in an unforeseen situation. Top safety institutions like IIHS and NHTSA have not got their hands upon the 4-Series as of now, and nor has the 2021 model been rated.

Standout safety features in the 2022 BMW 4-Series Include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning w/Pedestrian detection
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Traffic jam assist & Traffic sign recognition
  • Active Driving Assistant Pro w/Parallel and perpendicular park assist
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Blind-spot monitoring w/Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning

2022 BMW 4-Series Coupe vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe is a tough rival for the 4 Series. But the BMW has better MPG figures, offers a more exciting driving experience, and a comfortable ride whereas Mercedes-Benz offers the most premium cabin, lots of standard features. These are things that distinguish both cars. Choosing between them is quite hard as both are evenly matched and remain a decision based more on personal taste.

2022 BMW 4-Series Coupe vs 2022 Audi A5 Coupe

The Audi A5 Coupe is in many terms a better-designed car than the BMW 4-Series. That said, the BMW offers better space, slightly more power, and better MPG figures. On the other hand, the Audi A5 comes with AWD as standard, is quicker off the mark, and has more technology on offer. With the lower asking price also adding weightage to its side, the 2022 A5 is surely the preferred one of the two.

2022 BMW 4-Series Coupe vs 2022 Lexus RC 300

The Lexus RC 300 is slightly underpowered and hence the BMW 430i offers better acceleration. The BMW also returns better fuel economy and also has a more premium cabin with more standard features. Though the 4-series is pricier than the RC, it feels worth the additional investment for the added benefits. Also, even though the Lexus is a more reliable car in the long run, the BMW 4-series is a more likable choice than the RC 300.

Along with that, you get a lot of standard features and a unique design which is sure to make you stand out from the crowd.

BMW as a brand has been associated with safety and though the second-generation 4-series is yet to be tested by either of the federal and private safety agencies, one can rest assure of its safety standards. This makes the 2022 BMW 4-series a complete package for a sports coupe buyer.
