Not a lot of people do remember the original 8 Series from the late ‘90s but the new version of the iconic vehicle is equally appealing even to those who know. Much like the previous model, the G15 8 Series succeeded the F13 6 Series and is built on BMW’s latest CLAR platform.

Not a lot of people do remember the original 8 Series from the late ‘90s but the new version of the iconic vehicle is equally appealing even to those who know. Much like the previous model, the G15 8 Series succeeded the F13 6 Series and is built on BMW’s latest CLAR platform.
The BMW 8 Series Coupe is offered in two body styles i.e coupe and convertible and then there are the M badged models which are reviewed separately. The regular 840i Coupe comes with a standard I-6 motor along with an RWD or an AWD layout. On the inside, the car offers a plethora of tasteful features that include soft-close doors, premium leather upholstery, heated and power-operated front sport seats, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel along with heated armrests, multicolor ambient interior lighting, a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system, fully digital instrument cluster, and head-up display among other features. The optional Driving Assistance Package brings a slew of advanced safety techs including a surround-view camera system, a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and an automated parking system.

The 8 Series might catch your attention with its mighty 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8s but the regular 840i Coupe is no slouch either. The 2022 BMW 840i coupe engine is a 3.0-liter B58 turbocharged I-6 unit and it delivers a maximum of 335 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of maximum torque. Like other I-6 units from BMW, the B58 offers excellent refinement levels and is quite responsive too. At city speeds, the motor remains unstressed and relaxed cruising speeds also don’t agitate the motor too much. Flooring the gas pedal results in a strong surge of power that feels more than adequate for most of the driving needs as well to fulfill those sudden urges of adrenaline. The motor is mated to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission that is smooth and precise. Moreover, it uses GPS data to predict and optimize shifts according to the car’s location. It does an excellent job of keeping the motor relaxed while extracting all the power efficiently. The car accelerates to 60mph in 5 seconds which is a decent time considering the power figures and the engine configuration of the vehicle.

The Jaguar F-Type with its supercharged V8 isn’t quite fuel-efficient but it doesn’t disappoint given its impressive performance and power figures. The most disappointing part about the car is its sub-300 miles of city driving range. The Porsche 911 Carrera manages to impress here with some decent driving range figures as well as mpg figures considering the fact that it is the quickest and the sportiest one here. The Lexis LC 500 has almost similar fuel economy ratings to the F-Type but it stands out from the rest with its huge 21.7-gallon gasoline tank with which it manages to deliver a 347-mile of city driving range and 543-mile of highway driving range respectively.
BMW has focused equally on the interior design and comfort of the 840i like its performance. The 2022 BMW 840i interior offers a healthy list of standard features along with exceptional comfort levels and build. The front seats are sport units and get heating and power-adjustability as standard. The headroom and legroom are adequate for both the driver and the front passenger while the rear seats are mostly impractical apart from storing those extra luggage bags. Some of the standout interior features include ambient mood lighting with various color presets, a heated steering wheel, and a head-up display. The infotainment system is the latest iDrive 7 interface that runs on a 10.25-inch touchscreen display along with an integrated navigation system as well. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also offered as standard along with Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands. The audio system is a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon unit that offers an excellent surround sound output. The cargo capacity is quite generous at 14.8 cu-ft.

The Jaguar F-Type gets a no-nonsense cabin but comes with a 2-seater configuration only. Interior space is slightly on the lower side and tall passengers and drivers might brush their heads against the headliner often. The overall fit and finish levels are excellent but the dashboard design and interior theme feel a bit dull in front of the rivals here. The Porsche 911 Carrera has the same interior as its last year’s model and it’s tasteful as per Porsche’s standards. Performance-wise, the base I-6 powered coupe is decent and manage to hold its ground while the interior and the comfort aspects are even better than some of its rivals. The base model is also quite practical owing to its commendable fuel economy and qualifies as a daily driver too if one can drive it carefully enough to not scrape its belly over speed breakers.
