The 2022 M340i sits at the top of the 3-series range and the prices for the M340i start at $54,700, while the M340i xDrive kicks it to $56,700 with the AWD drivetrain on offer. The M340i comes standard with a new Live cockpit Pro digital gauge display which includes navigation. Apart from the standard fitments, BMW also offers various options packages which include the $1,600 Premium package which offers a heated steering wheel, head-up display, blind-spot monitor, and few other features.

There is also a $1,700 Driving Assistance Professional package that gets adaptive cruise control with stop & go, active collision avoidance, front & rear cross-traffic, and Active Driving Assistant Pro. The Cooling and High-Performance Tire package costs 2,400 and features heated and ventilated front seats and high-performance tires on larger 19-inch wheels. Adding all these options packages tends to make the M340i an expensive offering.

While the standard features list may not be the best in class, BMW offers enough fitment to justify the asking price. Since the M340i is a standalone trim, opting for the $1,700 Driving Assistance Professional package would not be a bad choice. It will add more value and practicality to the car with additional safety features on offer.

The 2022 BMW M340i Sedan features the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 motor as the 2021 M340i. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and is offered with RWD as standard. For $2,000 more you will be able to upgrade the drivetrain to BMW's xDrive AWD setup. This powertrain is capable of churning out 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of peak torque which aids in offering brisk acceleration at a relatively lower price than the M3.

The eight-speed automatic transmission is quick and smooth to respond which means the M340i is fun and yet tame. The lack of a manual transmission in a sports sedan like the M340i will surely upset the purists. That being said, the performance with the mild-hybrid setup is powerful just like a proper M car, and yet feels refined like the regular 3-series. The exhaust note is grunty and enjoyable, yet civilized enough to not bother the neighbors.

The M340i is capable of completing the 0-60 MPH sprint in about 4.1 seconds with the AWD while the RWD variant takes 4.4 seconds. The quarter-mile is covered in 12.5 seconds only while the top speed has been limited to 155 MPH only with the optional performance tires. Even without the optional adaptive M suspension setup, the ride is stiff and most of the road undulations can be felt inside the cabin. This in return offers sporty handling that is complemented by sharp and precise steering.

The 2022 BMW M340i Sedan will offer the same fuel economy figures as the 2021 model since there are no changes to the powertrain. This makes it the most efficient performance-oriented compact luxury sedan with the EPA-rated 26 MPG combined. The 15.6-gallon fuel tank suffices most driving needs and helps the M340i offer a very impressive almost 500-mile range. Though, flooring the car more often will see a considerable drop in the fuel economy figures. 

The Mercedes-AMG C43 is the one that sips the most fuel in this comparison as it returns 5 MPG less than the BMW in the combined city and highway driving. It does employ a larger gas tank to compensate for that but still falls short in terms of range. The Q50 and S4 both do better than the Mercedes and since the Q50 Red Sport 400 employs a massive 20-gallon fuel tank, it manages to offer a class-leading range.

With its engaging to drive character, the interior of the 2022 BMW M340i has always been simple and elegant but the design is rather basic. Keeping up with the tradition of all BMWs, the model offers the same impressive quality materials on the inside along with many soft-to-touch elements. The front sports seats are comfortable and low for that sporty driving position, but the thick front pillar does affect visibility to a certain extent. 

The 2022 M340i gets 14-way adjustable front sports seats with a memory function as standard. Leatherette upholstery is standard while one can upgrade to Vernasca leather upholstery for $1,450. There is plenty of space on offer for the front seat occupants and finding the perfect driving position won't take much time. The rear seats are pretty comfortable as well with decent space on offer. The 17 cu-ft trunk capacity on offer is the best in the business. 

In terms of cabin space, the interior of the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 is the most spacious at the front. It has the most amount of headroom and legroom to offer and does not compromise on the rear seat space as well. Both the Audi and Mercedes sedans offer similar cabins to that of the BMW but have a much smaller trunk to offer. The Live Cockpit Plus suite from BMW brings in the large 12.3-inch digital driver information screen as standard. 

The 2022 M340i Sedan also skips the 8.8-inch screen and instead gets the larger 10.25-inch head unit as standard. The iDrive 7.0 system can be controlled via the rotary knob on the center console, gestures, and voice commands and is quick to respond. The system is connected to a 10-speaker audio system and can be replaced with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system for $875.

With good detailing, the M340i looks chunkier with the body kit, but it doesn't scream for attention the way the M3 does - The Car Connection

The difference between the regular 3-series sedan and the 2022 BMW M340i includes an aerodynamic kit, the M spoiler at the rear, larger dual exhaust outlets, and the power glass moonroof. The M340i is available in Alpine White non-metallic paint as standard but can be had with 5 different metallic colors for an additional $550. There are 4 other premium colors also available for $1,500 but that will affect the delivery dates of the car. 

The M340i already gets a set of full LED headlights and taillights, the traditional Hofmeister kink on the C-column, and a couple of twin round chrome exhaust tips. It also features the 18-inch M double-spoke bi-color wheels as standard which can be upgraded to a set of 19-inch for another $600. Though the 5.4-inch ground clearance remains constant with the larger wheels, the ride becomes even stiffer and hence is not recommended. 

The Audi S4 has the shortest wheelbase and is longer than both the Bimmer and the Mercedes by very small margins. With a ground clearance of 3.5 inches, the Mercedes-AMG C43 sits 1.9 inches lower than the M340i, while the S4 too has a ride height about an inch lower than the BMW. The Infiniti Q50 is the longest car in this comparison and yet weighs on par with the segment standard, while also offering a decent ground clearance.

While the 2022 BMW M340i has not been safety tested specifically, the BMW 3-series has received impressive safety ratings. The 3-series received a perfect 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and also bagged the 'Top Safety Pick' accolade from the IIHS, for performing well in tests conducted for the 2021 model year. 2022 BMW M340i vs 2022 Audi S4

The Audi S4 is the most affordable prospect in this segment and offers great value in terms of standard technology and Quattro AWD. It also manages to come close to the performance of the M340i but lags behind in terms of efficiency.

Apart from the smaller trunk, the S4 also does not lose out much in terms of interior space. Therefore, unless hardcore performance & handling is what you seek, the more comfortable Audi S4 makes a sensible choice.

2022 BMW M340i vs 2021 Mercedes-AMG C43

While Mercedes is yet to unveil the new 2022 C43 sedan yet, in its current guise, it manages to offer tough competition to the M340i. Not only is it as quick as the BMW, but both are also priced very close to one another. While both offer pretty similar cabin space, the M340i has a much larger boot.

It is also the more fuel-efficient amongst the two which makes the BMW more practical for daily commutes. Unless Mercedes can manage to improve its efficiency or be considerably quicker off the mark, the 2022 M340i makes s stronger point between the two.

While the 2022 BMW M340i does not see many changes this year, the additional standard and optional features help keep things interesting. The option to choose between the RWD and AWD drivetrain is something that the competitors lack, and its superior fuel efficiency is class-leading by a huge margin. There is no shortage of performance and the price is competitive as well. Though the ride is stiffer than its rivals, it is worth the investment if performance & practicality is the combination that you seek.
