About 2022 BMW M3

4.3

Overall Rating

The 2022 BMW M3 is the latest evolution of the ultimate driving machine. It has an appeal that is associated with its heritage and a reputation for its capabilities. For 2022, it will be joined by the xDrive AWD setup exclusively for the Competition trim for an additional $4100. The 2022 BMW M3 Competition xDrive will be released for sale sometime by August 2021.

The BMW M3 was launched in all-new gen last year and which is why the model doesn't see many changes for this year. At a starting price of $69,900, the 2022 M3 features the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six producing 473 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels and comes with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. The engine in the M3 Competition is even more potent, producing 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, but it's only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For the first time, the 2022 BMW M3 model will be available with an all-wheel-drive system which will be limited to the Competition trim.

The BMW M3 Sedan 2022 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under 4.1 seconds. The 0-60 mph time drops to 3.8 seconds in the M3 Competition Sedan, and it further drops to 3.4 seconds when equipped with the XDrive AWD system. The inside of the 2022 M3 is essentially the same as the normal 3-series, except for distinctive "M" badging and unique accents. The 2022 BMW M3 will take on the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 S, Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, and the Audi RS5.

Both trims of the 2022 BMW M3: the base and the Competition trim are potent performers, so the final buying decision would depend on whether the buyer wants to splurge additional money for a minor bump in power. We would recommend sticking to the base variant of the BMW M3 since it gets practical functionalities like heated and ventilated seats, parking assist, and a navigation system. However, it is available only in an RWD variant, and if you want an AWD setup, the Competition trim is the only available option.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The BMW M3 compact sedan has a very sorted lineup. Buyers have the options to choose from two trims offering exactly what their owners want; power and more power. The lineup starts with the base M3 priced at $69,900. Then comes the M3 Competition trim which costs $72,800. Both trims are fundamentally the same but the latter is more powerful and utilizes a lot of carbon fiber trim all over.

It also uses an 8-speed automatic transmission, unlike the base model's standard six-speed manual unit. Now, for the first time, buyers of the 2022 M3 Competition will also be able to pair it to the coveted xDrive AWD setup. This will lead to a $4100 increase in price over the RWD M3 Competition but result in much quicker acceleration and improved performance while dynamic driving.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Whenever the letter M and the number 3 are together on a model badge the driver can expect a great experience, and that's true once again for the 2022 BMW M3 sedan. - Car and Driver

The engine offered in the sixth-generation BMW M3 is a 3.0L inline-six twin-turbocharged engine that generates 473 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque as standard. Staying true to BMW's M roots, it is offered with a six-speed manual transmission. The engine is also available in another state of tune, making 503 hp and 479 lb-ft torque in the Competition version, and is mated to an 8-speed automatic unit. Power from the engine, in either case, is transferred to the rear wheels as standard.

Now, however, the Competition trim brings in the option of the xDrive AWD setup. The new AWD setup of the 2022 M3 will also add three driving modes - 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD. The RWD M3's 0 to 60 mph acceleration time is just 3.8 seconds but with the AWD setup, it is expected to come down further to 3.4 seconds; top speed remains unaltered though.

The M3 is the least expensive car in its category. But in terms of power and torque figures, only the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio can surpass it. The Audi RS 5, on the other hand, has the lowest power output but makes up for that with its immense traction, propelling it to the fastest acceleration times of 3.7 seconds from 0-60 mph.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Even though the engine is more efficient than we've come to expect from sport sedans pumping almost 500 hp, efficiency is not exactly a selling point for the BMW M3. That said, it returns 19 MPG combined in its base setup, which is adequate considering all the performance this car offers. In the Competition trim, that number remains unaltered, making it the more economical choice.

The Mercedes-AMD C 63 S is the most fuel-efficient car of the bunch. And it is set to be even more efficient when the four-cylinder powertrain comes in. The BMW M3 is the least efficient car of the bunch. It also has a relatively small 15.6 gallons tank, allowing for a maximum driving range of 359 miles.

Interior
9.0/10

As you'd expect, the interior of this BMW is a great blend between luxury and sportines - Car Buzz

It is without a doubt that the 2022 BMW M3 is well endowed in its interiors too, as it is a sportier version of the very luxurious BMW 3 Series. One can find several M badges strewn throughout the cabin. There are accents of carbon fiber and micro-suede to add to the oomph.

The sedan also has nice materials like fine leather and soft-touch plastics throughout, even in hard-to-reach spots. When it comes to space, there's no shortage of it either. In fact, the M3 has one of the most spacious second rows among all its rivals. Its 13.0 cu-ft trunk is also best-in-class.

Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior styling of the new M3 and M4 models introduced in 2021 is something that has kicked up a lot of dust. BMW says that it is necessary that they innovate in terms of design language, but it also has received harsh criticism from some of the best car designers in the world.

Of course, some may feel that it is the fall of one of the greatest design houses in the world. Some might even think that this will never be remembered as a good design. But some opinions have also suggested that the design will grow on people over time and even come up as one of the most foresightful.

In terms of dimensions, the sixth-gen BMW M3 has is quite different from its ancestor as well. The wheelbase has grown by almost 2 inches while the overall length has gone up by almost 5 inches. On the contrary, it has become a lot lighter and that shows in the way it now handles, which is been better than before.

Safety
9.0/10

Unfortunately being a brand new car, the sixth generation BMW M3 has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA yet. In this scenario, we look at the safety features of the car and conclude how safe it could be. Also considering how the M3 is based on the 3 Series sedan, which already has an overall 5-star rating from the NHTSA, it is fairly wise to assume that the M3 will be plenty safe for occupants too. The sedan has a lot of driver assistance features that make it safe. They include:

  • Adaptive brake lights
  • BMW’s Active, front, and rear Head, Protection System
  • Rear-view camera
  • Active cruise control
  • Parking assistant plus
  • Active driving assistant professional
  • Active lane-keeping assistant
  • Slide collision avoidance
  • Anti-theft alarm system
  • Programmable LED DRLs and Adaptive LED headlights

Final Verdict

The current BMW M3, quite unarguably, is no longer a sedan that would appeal to everybody, and that simply has to do with its looks. Otherwise, the car holds on to its heritage and perfects them further. Its engine is powerful, the cabin is spacious and feature-loaded, and it is the cheapest compact sedan among rivals such as the AMG C 63 S, Giulia Quadrifoglio, and RS 5. With the addition of its first-ever AWD setup, the BMW M3 will further attain new highs in performance. But those not able to move past appearances can also go for an older or used model of M3, which still holds plenty of value.
