Overall Rating
The 2022 BMW M850i coupe remains unchanged this year and comes at a price starting at $100,895. It is powered by the same 4.4L twin-turbo 523 hp V8 engine as last year and is available in coupe, convertible and 4-door Gran Coupe body styles. It is available for sale with more features than the base 8 Series coupe and can do the 0-60 in 3.3 seconds with the standard xDrive AWD system.
The 2022 BMW M850i coupe does not get any changes whatsoever over its 2021 model year. After being in production from 1990 to 1999, it is still fresh since it was relaunched only a few years back in 2018. In terms of specs, it is powered by a more powerful twin-turbo 523 horsepower V8 engine over the base 8 Series and can do 0-60 in 3.3 seconds with the standard xDrive AWD system.
The interior too features more creature comforts like ventilated front seats as standard and also gets larger 20-inch wheels, higher top speed, and adaptive sport-tuned suspension over the 840i coupe. The M850i is also available for sale in 4-door Gran Coupe and Convertible body styles to better cater to the individual needs of the buyers.
The price for the M850i coupe starts at $100,895 and is challenged by the likes of the Lexus LC 500, Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, and the upcoming fully redesigned Maserati GranTurismo.
Since the car is offered in a single M850i trim, there's not much to choose from there.
That being said, we would recommend having the Driver Assistance Package for the better overall safety of the car which also adds value to it. It adds peace of mind with added driver assistance and safety features and yet does not hike the prices drastically.

"The 8 Series coupe is incredibly luxurious even if it's not incredibly distinct." Car and Driver
The M850i Coupe is a single and high-performance trim of the 2022 BMW 8 Series car and gets a 4.4-liter V8 as standard. With a starting price tag of $100,895, the car comes in a highly equipped form and also gets some optional packages as well to better spec your car. That said, more standard driver aids would have added more value to the 2022 M850i coupe.
The standard features include ventilated and 14-way power-adjustable front seats, a fully digital Live Cockpit Pro instrument panel, wireless charging pad, iDrive touchscreen infotainment system, 16-speaker premium Harman Kardon music system, and a head-up display among other features.

"The M850i coupe will not only entertain you on a curvy road, and keep up with the competition when you leave a set of spotlights, it simply also excels at long-distance comfort." - Edmunds
The 2022 BMW M850i Coupe gets a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 unit under its hood. This M Performance engine is tuned to generate a maximum of 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of maximum torque which is far more than what you get with the 335 hp turbocharged inline-6 found in the base 8 Series 840i. The 2022 BMW M8 on the other hand generates 617 hp from the same 4.4L engine.
The transmission duties are handled by none other than a sport-tuned 8-speed ZF 8HP torque-converter automatic transmission that provides smooth, precise, and lightning-quick shifts. The motor showcases its smooth and rev-happy nature, while it retains the traditional V8 rumble to some extent. Power is sent to all four wheels as standard through the xDrive AWD drivetrain.
The handling and the agility of the car are exceptional for the class and the M-specific parts along with the performance-tuned suspension system provide a memorable experience as well. The 0-60 MPH comes up in a blisteringly quick 3.3 seconds while the standing quarter-mile requires only 11.5 seconds to complete.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe has the lowest horsepower rating among the rivals here and it also comes with the smallest motor. The Lexus LC 500 gets a massive 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 and is one of the last brands that is keeping the naturally aspirated engines going for good. Maserati is yet to launch the next-gen GranTurismo and we expect it gets a significant bump in terms of performance.
The 2022 M850i coupe is not only the quickest of the lot, but it also offers the most value with its reasonable price tag.

High-performance coupes with V8s under their hood are not exactly quite pocket-friendly, but the 2022 BMW M850i coupe does rather well in this regard. The car returns 17 MPG within the city limits and 25 MPG out on the highways while the combined mileage is rated at 20 MPG by the EPA.
These figures are pretty good considering the standard AWD system. That being said, it gets a rather compact 18-gallon fuel tank and offers a maximum range of around 450 miles.

In comparison, the Lexus and Mercedes both offer larger capacity gas tanks which aid in over upwards of 500 miles of range on the highways. The GranTurismo is the least efficient in its current guise but the new generation might change things for good. While the S-Class coupe manages to match up with BMW with its standard AWD, the LC 500 falls a tad bit short even with the RWD drivetrain.
"As long as you don't need to carry rear seat passengers, the 8 impresses with its wonderfully comfortable cockpit." Carbuzz
The 2022 BMW M850i has a scintillating performance on offer and it doesn’t mean that the brand has skimped on the interior part. The cabin is quite well-appointed with most of the exposed parts made out of soft-touch materials and the rest getting leather upholstery with contrasting stitches.
The fit and finish levels along with the overall build quality are top-notch and exude a sense of opulence from every angle. The dashboard design is quite driver-oriented with all the controls and the infotainment screen angled towards the driver’s seat. The center stack houses the gear selector knob along with the rotary control knob for the iDrive system that also houses a track-pad on top of it.
The front seats are 16-way power-adjustable and come with ventilation as standard. The rear seats are only there for the sake of their presence and are best suited for keeping extra luggage items. There are plenty of customization options since the Merino leather interior upholstery is available in 6 standard color options along with 8 other styles for another $2,000. The interior trims can be had with the choices of wood, aluminum, carbon fiber, and piano black finishes. The carbon fiber trims cost $300 while the price for the piano black finish is $1,080.
The cargo space is quite generous at 14.8 cu-ft, a rarity in the segment. The rear seats can also be folded down to extend the cargo space.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe is as luxurious as the regular S-Class sedan in terms of features and comfort levels. It gets practical and usable rear seats along with a generous 14.1 cu-ft of trunk space as well, making it the best of the lot. The Lexus LC 500 also has a plush and luxurious cabin with adequate modern techs and features onboard but lags way behind in terms of cargo space.
On the tech front, the car gets the latest iDrive infotainment interface running on a 10.25-inch touchscreen as standard.
It can be controlled via touch and the rotary knob as well along with the gimmicky gesture controls. Features-wise, it offers a 16-speaker premium Harman Kardon audio system, BMW Connected Drive services, an inbuilt navigation system with real-time traffic updates, and only wireless Apple CarPlay compatibility.
Optionally, one can also opt for the 16-speaker 1400-Watts Bowers and Wilkins audio system for an added cost.

"Wide and menacing, the M850i coupe makes the most of its mass." - The Car Connection
The 2022 BMW M850i has been exempted from getting that polarizing and huge vertical kidney grille and gets a sleek yet sporty-looking grille instead. The LED headlamp units with their sleek yet aggressive design enhance the appeal of the car’s front fascia and keep it from looking overly dramatic. The front bumpers house the air dams and the blacked-out front splitter, while the side profile remains simple. The rear-end is a head-turner with stretched LED taillights and the lip spoiler-like design of the trunk lid.
The 20-inch M wheels look graceful on the car and it gets a ground clearance of 5.0-inch as well. Apart from the Alpine White paint color, the 2022 M850i coupe can also be had 6 no-cost metallic colors schemes, 3 other premium metallic paint at $1,950, which includes the Dravit Grey Metallic showcased here, and a Frozen Bluestone Metallic color scheme for a whopping $5,000 price tag. There are also a variety of 20-inch wheel design options available with the M850i coupe to better match your tastes.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe is the largest one in this comparison while the Lexus is the shortest. The Maserati too will be larger than the BMW but the higher ground clearance of the M850i offers peace of mind over the curbs and bumps.
In terms of looks, the Mercedes looks the least dramatic and sporty of the lot and its design is reminiscent of the bigger S-Class sedans. The Lexus LC 500 looks the most dramatic of the lot owing to Lexus’ spindle grille design and sharp styling of the coupe’s exterior. The BMW on the other hand feels a lot more modern and sophisticated.

European cars were always among the many to set the standards of safety in the automobile world and BMW vehicles are some of the finest examples. The 2022 BMW M850i coupe carries a steep price tag and its sales figures are low hence, the crash tests from both the NHTSA and the IIHS have been given a miss. Nevertheless, the car comes with all the basics covered and gets some advanced safety tech as well, although you'll have to pay an extra sum for it.
Some standout safety features include:
The Lexus LC 500, like the S-Class Coupe, is a more comfort-oriented coupe as compared to the M850i. But, it possesses a fine balance of performance and luxury with a huge 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 under its hood along with a rich and technically sound interior laden with premium materials. On the fuel economy aspect too, it is almost neck-to-neck with the M850i as well. The LC 500 falls short when it comes to the practicality aspect with its subpar trunk space on offer.
While the GranTurismo is yet to be released, it still is not expected to match up with the M850i in terms of performance or fuel-efficiency. The balance between sporty handling and comfortable ride quality is where the two might show similarity, but the spacious trunk, plenty of creature comforts, and cutting-edge technology make the Bimmer the clear winner, especially when the price difference isn't the greatest.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe is a more luxury-centric competitor of the M850i and has a sedate performance aspect too. On the inside, it is more luxurious and opulent than the M850i and isn’t as sporty or track-friendly as the latter as well. That said, the S-Class Coupe is much more luxurious and gets plenty of safety kit as standard. But the higher price tag of Mercedes, tilts the scales towards the M850i coupe.
The BMW M850i coupe is an iconic offering in the segment and lives up to its reputation with a strong performance at its disposal. If one can look beyond the hefty price tag, the car comes with a strong all-around package combining a luxurious cabin, track-friendly driving dynamics, decent fuel economy in contrast to the performance, and the impressive safety aspect. Moreover, with a spacious trunk, the car can happily make its way into the “daily driver” club as well.
