Overall Rating
The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu will be in most probability, be in its last production year as GM has hinted at discontinuing the model in 2022. So, expect no major changes in the 2022 Malibu from the 2021 model.
First, it was the Chevrolet Volt, Cruze, and Impala, and now it appears that yet another sedan from the bowtie brand could be sent to the chopping block. As a carryover model this year, we expect the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu to share the same exterior design as the current model. On the inside, the current Malibu has an attractive, sweeping design that will carry over for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is expected to come with tech features similar to the current model.
As for the powertrain, there are two available engines for the current Malibu. The standard engine is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 160 horsepower. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is available, producing 250 hp. The standard engine is paired with a CVT, while the more powerful 2.0-liter motor comes with a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is the only available drivetrain. These powertrains are expected to remain the same for the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu.
There isn't an official announcement on the trims and features available for now. However, customers can check out the 2021 model for more details on what trims you could expect.

Being a carryover model we expect the trims and features to be similar to what was offered in the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu. The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu comes in 5 trims namely, L, LS, RS, LT, and Premier. The upgrades included an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, 18-inch aluminum wheels, a 9-speaker Bose sound system, and much more in the Premier trim.
We expect the RS trim to be still on offer for this year as well as it adds a bit of sporty appeal to the Malibu lineup and makes it feel a bit more sportier and agile.
The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu will most likely continue with the same recipe as the 2021 model so don't expect a massive bump in performance. It's a good start to look into the engine part, so speaking about the mechanical aspect of Malibu, It will continue to offer satisfactory results in terms of engine and performance.
Under the hood, the upcoming model is expected to carry over the 1.5L Turbocharged inline-4 engine putting out 163 hp power and 184 lb-ft torque mated to CVT, for upgrading the performance level a choice of 2.0L would also be available that will get paired with the 9-speed automatic transmission.

*2021 Chevrolet Malibu figures
With the available engine options, the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is expected to do naught to sixty in just under 8 seconds. Looking at the competitors, the Malibu is nowhere close to in terms of power and torque to the rivals. As for the other three, the Toyota Camry is the most powerful followed by Honda Accord and the Kia K5. But if we compare the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile run figures the tables get turned upside down with Honda Accord leading the pack followed by Camry, Malibu, and K5 in that order.
Since the powertrain is expected to be carried over from the 2021 model, the Chevrolet Malibu is expected to return 29 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on freeways, the figures offered are satisfactory. With 15.8 gallons of the fuel tank, you can expect a 569-mile highway and 505 miles combined range.

As for the mpg figures, the Honda Accord once again beats all of them followed by Malibu, K5, and the Camry in that order. One noteworthy point here is that Toyota Camry returns the most mpg on the highway among all and a fuel tank capacity of 15.8 gallons can easily give you 600+ miles of range on highways.
No new revelations are expected in terms of Chevrolet Malibu interiors and will carry the same veil from that of previous iterations. Thus, you won’t find Malibu opulent but it’s spacious and offers enough convenience to spend long journeys peacefully with family and friends. The interior will be crafted with upmarket materials and dominated by pastel crème colors combined with black and dark grey.
The overall design will be kept minimalistic and with no compromise in the comfort level, it can accommodate 5 members easily with utmost comfort. This mid-size sedan’s cabin is highly commodious, offering a plush and luxurious feel to the occupants. You will have plenty of head and legroom space in both rows. The Malibu comes with a decent cargo capacity as well.

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is expected to remain unchanged for the infotainment part. Standard features on the current Malibu include an 8-inch touchscreen, a USB port, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, six audio speakers, and Bluetooth. Optional features include wireless smartphone charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a nine-speaker Bose audio system, push-button start, and an 8-inch digital driver display.
As for the competitors, Toyota Camry is the smallest, and a tad bit bigger Honda Accord comes above it. But the Kia K5 is the best in terms of overall space and the front seat leg space. Overall the rear seats of all the four mid-size sedans are a bit tight with a difference of a few inches here and there among each other.
Chevrolet last updated the Malibu for the 2019 model year. At the front, the Malibu got a new chrome piece connecting the headlights, slightly slimmer headlights, and a larger front grille with minor updates here and there. Updated rear tail lights rounded out the changes.
Since 2022 Chevrolet Malibu will be a carryover model we expect little to no changes to the exterior. You will get the Projector Headlights across the range, albeit not standard on all trims. The rear gets a sporty treatment on the RS models as compared to the normal Malibu.

As for the competitors we can easily see from the table that the Chevrolet Malibu is the longest mid-size sedan among all four here. But surprisingly except for the Kia K5, all the three have a similar wheelbase of around 111 inches. Coming to the ground clearance here also the Chevrolet Malibu beats all the others with a class-leading ground clearance of 6.5 inches.
The 2021 Malibu standard safety features are a joke compared to the industry standard, as only a rearview camera is standard. Forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane change alert, lane-keeping assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and park assist are all optional.
In the IIHS testing, the 2021 Malibu was rated “Good” in five crash tests, but a “Marginal” rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. The NHTSA gave the Malibu sedan a four-star out of five-star overall safety rating. We expect to see no major changes to these safety features and ratings for the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu.
The 2021 Honda Accord performs well in terms of power and acceleration. But Chevy Malibu is not far behind in terms of acceleration. Even the mileage figures of Malibu are way better than the Accords. The interior of Malibu also feels premium and comfortable with such a budget-friendly price. Overall, the Chevy Malibu offers great mileage, decent performance, and a comfortable interior at a better price. Moreover, the 2022 Chevy Malibu will be pocket-friendly by a couple of thousand dollars.
Kia K5 has an appealing design, great acceleration, and overall performance, but it is quite pricey. At the same price, you could expect the RS trim of Chevy Malibu to be priced which generates more power than the K5 and is extremely premium in its offering. The Chevy will provide you great features at that price point.
So, it is better to wait for the 2022 Chevy Malibu RS trim than to buy the base trim of the 2021 Kia K5.
For its spectacular performance, engine capacity, braking system, and world-renowned reliability, the 2021 Toyota Camry is way ahead of the upcoming 2022 Chevy Malibu. Above all of the benefits, the winning streak is of the pricing. The Toyota Camry would set you back by $24,295, at this price point, you can expect to get the base trim of the 2022 Chevy Malibu. Hence, the 2021 Toyota Camry proves to be a better buy in every sense.
Eyeballs are struck at the last iteration of the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu, which is expected to range around $23,000-$34,000. Chevrolet Malibu will be great in terms of design and comfort. The interior will be appealing with a smooth touch and premium appeal. The 1.5L engine will serve you well but the 2.0L engine will be more fun to drive. The gas mileage and range expected are also great in the segment. The Malibu is worth holding this price tag for the buyers and is expected to be launched around January 2022.
