About 2022 Dodge Challenger

3.7

Overall Rating

The 2022 Dodge Challenger has been launched in the market with a starting price of just over $29,000. On offer as standard is a 3.6-liter Naturally-Aspirated V6 motor that belts out 303 hp and 268 ft-lbs. of torque. 2 trims- SXT and GT are on offer, with RWD being standard on both and the option of upgrading to an AWD setup on both trims, if needed.

With a complete refresh slated for 2023, the 2022 Dodge Challenger remains all familiar with no major changes. What that means is that buyers in 2022 get the same 2 trims, with the 303 hp 3.6L V6 under the hood and a similar feature list as on the 2021 Challenger. All set for its last outing in the current generation, the 2022 Dodge Challenger starts from an MSRP of $29,295 for the base SXT trim with RWD.

While the interiors may not be a sumptuous as many others in the segment, it still packs enough space and features to justify its price. Furthermore, the arrival of the 1000 hp Challenger Ghoul in 2023 will fill the void left by the Dodge Challenger Demon. Additional rumors include the hybrid powertrain for the 2023 Challenger. So, in its last pure outing with a V6 engine, the 2022 Dodge Challenger competes against the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro.

With a bump of $3,000 over the base SXT, the Dodge Challenger GT seems to be a more sensible choice. No update in performance though but the GT does bring some additional features like paddle-shifters and steering-mounted cruise controls.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2022 Dodge Challenger continues to roll with its two base configurations- SXT and GT.  No major mechanical difference between the two models and both these two models offer the safe companentry with aesthetical and feature upgrades in the GT. While the base SXT is pretty much bare bones, the SXT adds niceties like larger 20’ inch wheels, upgraded seats and brakes, paddle-shifters and rear parking sensors.

Dodge also offers a number of options for customers to choose from and includes packages like the Technology Group (adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning), Driver Convenience Group (blind-spot monitoring and more), Cold Weather Group (heated seats and steering wheel), Plus package (added creature comforts), Leather upholstery, Ventilated front seats, Integrated navigation system, Six-speaker Alpine and 18-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound systems.

Both the aforementioned shall also carry their standard RWD configuration with the familiar AWD continuing as a $3000 option. If you have a greater appetite for muscle and power though, the higher performance trims (treated as separate models) like the R/T Scat Pack or the SRT Hellcat would serve you better.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"The Challenger hustles through corners like a raging bull seeing red, snorting aggressively and swaying threateningly." - Car and Driver

The 2022 Challenger continues to source its power from its three available V8 and a V6 engine across its diverse lineup. The lower SXT and GT models are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 which comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and makes 305 hp. The R/T comes with a 375 hp 5.7-liter V8 while the R/T Scat Pack gets a 485 hp 6.4-liter V8. Both these two models come mated to a 6-speed manual.

The range-topping SRT models get a powerful 6.2-liter V8 with power varying between 717 hp to 797 hp with either of the two available transmissions mentioned above. The base 3.6-liter engine seems smooth and refined and capable enough of handling everyday duties. The available V8 monsters though proportionately amplify the Challenger’s outrage. Equating the right mix of power, fun, and economy, the R/T with its 375 hp V8 seems to hit the sweet spot.

Among its segment here, the Challenger seems to be on par with its rivals in terms of power output. While it may be heavier than its rivals here, the Challenger does show plenty of wild potentials. Even with the base V6, the Challenger races from 0-60 mph in just 5.3 seconds making it as quick as a 525 lbs lighter Nissan 370Z.

On the move, the Challenger may not be as agile as its rivals but for something its size, it has a nicely balanced character. With its efficiently tuned suspension, the standard Challenger is a comfortable daily driver which can flex its muscles in no time, on-demand. With ventilated discs and ABS at all 4 corners, the Challenger is also a confident stopper.

Fuel Economy
5.5/10

Since its engine options are carried over from the 2021 model year, the 2022 Challenger delivers a similar EPA-rated fuel economy as its 2021 model. With the base V6 expect an economy of 23 mpg combined. Equate that with an 18.5 gallons of fuel tank and you have a combined driving range of 425 miles which should be enough for your daily driving needs.

The current Challenger’s fuel economy is certainly on par with the rivals which does take a dip with the higher V8 engines. However, with the rapidly changing industry standards, the 2023 Dodge Challenger is said to get a hybrid powertrain which would promise best in class efficiency. The hybrid powertrain could feature the 2.0-liter engine of the Ram 1500 paired with an electric motor.

"The Challenger is a king among the muscle coupes in passenger and cargo space." - Edmunds

With a thorough revision coming up in 2023, the 2022 Dodge Challenger features no changes at all from last year and so you would still get to see the same old-school payout with a neat and thoughtful placement of controls and nice materials. While you do get cloth seats with manual adjustments and a leather steering in the base SXT, the GT adds in Houndstooth cloth seats with some extra bolstering. The GT also gets paddle-shifters and steering mounted cruise controls.

Even on the feature front, the 2022 Challenger continues to flash its standard 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment. The higher models above the R/T get an upgraded 8.4-inch infotainment system. The system is sharp and responsive and its clean interface and large icons make it quite easy to use. On the connectivity front, the standard infotainment comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB and a 6-speaker audio.

Even in terms of cargo space, the Challenger stands tall with its best in class 16.2 cu-fts of space at the back. Until we are introduced to its refreshed 2023 iteration, the 2022 Dodge Challenger would still keep up on its overwhelming promises.

"The Challenger’s broad haunches and long hood are promises that it mostly delivers on. It’s fast in a straight line and looks the part." - TheCarConnection

Probably for one last time in 2022, the Dodge Challenger will don its unmistakable sheet that we have come to know for a long time now. Before a thorough refresh in 2023, we get the 2022 Challenger with all its classic signatures with no major changes at all in terms of design or dimensions.

You will get the same quad-halogen headlamp setup, flared hips, and a wide yet aggressive stance. Though the base SXT model comes with 18’ inch, you would still get larger 20’ inch wheels on the GT which further intensifies its aggression. As usual, you would still be able to pick from a plethora of exterior customization schemes.

Dodge Challenger Vs Ford Mustang

While the Challenger and Mustang do have similar power figures and price brackets but have completely different characters. While the Challenger is all about classic American muscle and aggression, the Mustang does the same but with a good flavor of curvy and youthful modern design. The Mustang also has a better interior layout, is available as a convertible, and is also more sporty and maneuverable than the iconic Dodge. The Challenger on the other hand turns out to be more comfortable, more spacious and more practical than the Mustang.

Dodge Challenger Vs Chevrolet Camaro

When pitched against the Chevrolet Camaro the Dodge Challenger again seems to be on the back foot. The Camaro is more stylish with a better interior and tech features. The Camaro not only offers better driving engagement than the Challenger but it also has a better feature suite. The Dodge Challenger on the other hand has a more aggressive design, is more spacious, practical, and comfortable than the Camaro as well. With the base engine, the Dodge here is also quicker and powerful than the Chevrolet pony.

Final Verdict

For those looking for an old-school powerful muscle car with tons of comfort, space and practicality, the 2022 Dodge Challenger would probably be their last chance to grab one before it's 2023 refresh. Though it may look old-school, but for its price and size, the Challenger offers good all-round performance comfort and importantly a dynamic character. Its available V6 and V8 Engines feel refined and potent, the cabin though dated still holds an upscale vibe into it while simultaneously clinging on to a healthy suite of tech and driver-assistance.
