The 2022 Ford EcoSport might not be the top dog in its class, but there is no denying how it is one of those very first vehicles that brought something new which made the crowd notice subcompact SUVs a lot more than before.

Yes, three out of four trims seem pretty decent when it comes to the price to features ratio. Except for the base trim which is very bare bone. However, if we had to suggest one, we would advise going for the SE trim, as first of all, it offers pretty good standard features which makes it a lot more alive than the base version. But buyers craving for even better features can opt for additional packages, which means one won’t have to pay as much as the SES costs. The SE already offers a sunroof, a better infotainment system, heated front seats, and few more luxury features, but do not forget to opt for a Convenience and Appearance package.

Just like the last year, the 2022 Ford EcoSport is available in four trim levels, i.e., S, SE, Titanium, and SES. The price tag ranges from $23,235 to $29,720, and each trim offers a different set of features. Still, every trim is powered by a 2L four-cylinder engine now, so one won’t have to pay extra to replace the three-cylinder one. The base ‘S’ trim seems a lot simpler than the others as it comes with a list that seems minimal as you will find manually adjustable seats, power windows, cruise control, charging ports, and a Wifi hotspot.
The SE trim lights up the mood by offering keyless entry, automatic climate control, a better infotainment system, a sunroof, and heated front seats. Next up is the Titanium trim which offers bigger wheels, a premium audio system, leather upholstery, and more chrome on the body. The ‘SES’ trim tops out by offering sporty aesthetics, including ambient interior lighting, more luxury, and safety features.

Which Trim should you buy?
Yes, three out of four trims seem pretty decent when it comes to the price to features ratio. Except for the base trim which is very bare bone. We expect Ford to unveil the 2022 Ford EcoSport by the end of 2021, although they may even take till Spring 2022 as the EcoSport received a facelift for the model year 2021.
As we have mentioned before, Ford axed the three-cylinder engines so now every trim of EcoSport is powered by a 2.0 Liter inline-4 cylinder engine which can produce 166 horsepower and a torque of 149 lb-ft. The engine is still mated with the same six-speed automatic transmission. The next bit of information is not fully confirmed for now, but we think that the four-cylinder EcoSport might come in all-wheel drive only. This means, a better experience over different terrains, but who knows maybe front-wheel drive will still be there.
As for the engine, it might not be impressive for its class, after all, it's not all new, but it sure is better than the discontinued three-cylinder one. It manages to move EcoSport from zero to 60 mph in 10.4 seconds and can finish a quarter-mile in 16.9 seconds. Keep in mind though that it does make a lot more sound than you would expect from such a compact vehicle. The compact SUV reaches the 60 mph mark in 10.4 seconds and completes a quarter-mile in 16.9 seconds.

Ford’s decision of making a four-cylinder standard for 2022 EcoSport certainly adds up a few points to it, but it is still not that pleasing while driving in straight lines. However, what saves it from decimation is that take it to locals, and you will feel how peppy it feels as it stays ready to move even if slower than the others. The steering wheel stays light most of the time and offers pretty smooth control over the vehicle. This makes it amazing to drive on corners or park very easily.
Despite getting a better standard engine now, the 2022 EcoSport still falls behind the others when put on the road. The Mazda CX-30 takes the lead on the road, followed by Chevrolet Trax. However, if compared to last MY’s base trim, the EcoSport might not be able to overtake the others, but it can finally come close. The Chevrolet Trax sports a turbo inline-4 unlike its rivals, but it still trails behind the Mazda.
Seeing EcoSport’s gentle behavior on the road makes one think that it might not be powerful on the road but maybe it will offer decent fuel economy, but you will be disappointed to know that the Eco in its name is nowhere near the economy as it offers a mileage of 23 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highways, and 25 mpg combined. These stats are nowhere near as good as one would expect from such a vehicle. However, Ford does try to compensate for this by offering a decent-sized fuel tank with a 13.8-gallon capacity. So at the end of the day, it results in an acceptable driving range that varies from 317 to 400 miles. This is the only situation where we miss the old three-cylinder engine which offered better mileage.

It seems Hyundai Kona takes the lead here by offering much better mileage on the road than the others, measuring 30 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg combined. Even the driving range it offers is superior to the others, thanks to the 13.2-gallon fuel tank and excellent MPG figures. The Mazda CX-30 comes with a smaller fuel tank than the EcoSport but manages to surpass it by offering better mileage.
Step inside the 2022 Ford EcoSport, and you will find a typical Ford design language. The base trim comes in single color coding, whereas the higher trims are available in dual-tone colors. The material quality, however, is not up to standards, as you will only find soft-touch surfaces at very few spots and the rest of the cabin is filled with hard plastic. As for the dashboard, the design is decent enough with buttons placed thoughtfully. The leather-wrapped steering wheel can be upgraded to a heated one.
As for the seats, cloth upholstery is standard, but that can be upgraded to leather upholstery. Moreover, manually adjustable seats are available at the front, which can be upgraded to heated ones. A 60/40 split-folding bench seat is available at the rear. Noise isolation inside the cabin is poor though, so forget about the quiet driving experience. Thankfully, you can load more cargo than usual, which is pretty good for its class.

When compared to its rivals, the 2022 EcoSport offers a pretty spacious cabin and a somewhat similar passenger volume to the others. However, it does surpass the others in the case of cargo capacity. Remember you can further increase it by folding down the rear row seat. We must mention though that its rivals offer more shoulder room. All the compact SUVs in the competition offer seating space for 5, which is the segment's standard. Standout interior features include:
When it comes to the infotainment system of the 2022 Ford EcoSport, don't even think about looking at the base trim. It comes with a very basic system with not many functions and features for connectivity. All the other trims, however, come with the Ford Sync 3 system and an 8 inch LCD capacitive touchscreen. The display is smooth and the UI offers an easy learning curve, but Ford also provides physical buttons and knobs below for those old-school users.
Features such as Bluetooth phone connectivity, SiriusXM, USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and navigation system are available. As standard, an unimpressive six-speaker sound system is available, but that is going to be overshadowed by the 10 speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system. Lastly, the voice command system works nicely as intended. Standout infotainment features include:
For 2022, the Ford EcoSport is going to look the same as before but that shouldn’t be a problem as looking fabulous is one of those things that it has been doing since its first reveal. At the front, you will find the usual Ford new style grille with confident eyes flanking from both sides. On higher trims, these projector-beam headlamps are available with daytime running lights. The sides still come with not so straight design and host black bodyside cladding, chrome side windows trim, and power heated side mirrors.
16-inch alloy wheels are standard, but buyers can opt for bigger ones. On top a power sunroof is available, and at the rear, you get a sharp lip spoiler. The overall design of the 2022 Ford EcoSport looks compact yet the road presence it offers is very good. The body might be a bit smaller than the others, but the 7 inches of ground clearance is very good and provides some confidence to the overall driving experience.

Despite being heavier on the road than the others, the 2022 EcoSport sure is compact for its class. The ground clearance it offers is better than both Chevy Trax and Hyundai Kona. These attributes provide benefits to the overall ride quality. The Mazda CX-30, on the other hand, offers even better ground clearance, making it more suitable for rough terrains. When comparing the wheelbase, the EcoSport is the most compact whereas the Mazada has the longest one, measuring 99.2 and 1.4.4 inches, respectively. Standout exterior features include:
When it comes to safety, the Ford EcoSport doesn't come out as the safest vehicle from its class. It manages to score four stars in crash tests done by the NHTSA. IIHS, on the other hand, hasn’t crash-tested it yet. Speaking of safety, you will find standard features such as AdvanceTrac with roll stability control, Dual stage multiple airbags at key positions, low tire pressure warning system, parking sensors, and a backup camera.
Yes we know these are very basic, but Ford does try to raise the bar by offering a blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert. Yes, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking system are still missing, but for now, we can only expect that Ford will load those pretty soon. Standout safety features available with the 2022 EcoSport include:
The 2022 Hyundai Kona looks spectacular on the road. Despite being heavy, the 2022 EcoSport manages to offer braking performance, which is similar to the Kona. The overall cabin volume Ford offers is better than Hyundai’s, but it’s the compact dimensions that provide it an edge. Kona, on the other hand, offers better performance. Its fuel tank capacity is a bit smaller than the Ford’s, but the superior mileage results in a better driving range.
It seems going against Mazda CX-30 is a tough bargain for EcoSport as Mazda is superior in almost everything. It is not only much faster on the road but also offers excellent fuel economy. Its cabin is somewhat similar to EcoSport volume-wise and even the cargo capacity is a bit closer. Ford, on the other hand, only managed to make EcoSport smaller in size, which made it agile in comparison.
While both EcoSport and Trax look somewhat similar in design, it’s the sporty stance of Chevy which keeps it distinct. As for the performance, the Chevy Trax manages to outrun EcoSport pretty easily. Even the occupants get a better room with easy getting in and out of the cabin, and lastly, it offers better-stopping power. The Ford EcoSport, on the other hand, only offers better cargo capacity.
It seems after all this time, the Ford EcoSport is walking on its own path without much caring about the competition. The 2L mill feels alive while driving locally, but it is far from being powerful or efficient on the road. Its compact dimensions have their ups and downs but it still manages to offer a spacious cabin. On the other hand, cheap material quality ruins the fun, however, superior cargo capacity is a plus point. Lastly, the level of technology it offers is decent but fails to impress. So, only consider getting a 2022 Ford EcoSport if you are a hardcore Ford fan, otherwise, you will find better options in this price range.
